Had been a really long time since I have been to Friendly's. I went there often when they had breakfast specials. Actually let me take that back, I have been to Friendly's and done take out orders when my son liked chicken fingers and Mac and cheese at one point of time. They have one of the best deals on the kids menu ever!! So what brought me to Friendly's this time was an ad on Facebook or Instagram that mention they had the warm lobster rolls. I did get the kids meal for my son, lobster roll and a sandwich for my dad. The restaurants ambiance appears good, and the restaurant looks like a classic Friendly's, that's well preserved over time.

    Enjoying ice cream with dinner.

It being July 4th, Independence Day, I thought it would be an appropriate day to enjoy a hot dog. Just ask Joey Chestnut! I'm not going to reduce my # of *s because we really enjoyed our food and beverages. But I do have to question what I had to drink. The board said it was an Ommegang Grande Tripel stout at 5.5 ABV ($9). That level of ABV would be reasonable for a stout, but the color of the brew was golden like a typical Tripel, and not dark like the typical Stout. The bartender gave us a sample, and it was full of flavor with my wife noticing the vanilla tones that were described by the bartender. I didn't initially identify any specific flavor other than delicious and different than I would have expected from a stout. I also would not take issue with the posted 5.5 ABV. HOWEVER, a quick reference to Ommegang online as I write this says that it is a Belgium Tripel and the ABV is 9. Yes, NINE ABV! I would definitely have noticed if I were drinking a 9 ABV on an empty stomach. I also would have noticed it driving the car after finishing a pint within one hour. For those familiar with Utah Phillips, "It was good though!" But on to the food. We ordered a shareable Tot-Chos ($12.99) consisting of tater tots, tomatoes, avocado, cheese sauce, pickled jalapeños, and chipotle aioli. These were very tasty and not too spicy, with crispy on the outside and soft on the inside tots. My wife ordered the Sooo Cali ($10.99) hot dog. The black angus beef hot dog is very tasty even before it is topped with wild arugula, tomato, avocado, crispy onion strings, and spicy basil aioli. The combined flavors work well together on the Kings Hawaiian rolls. My choice was to try the Hogfather ($10.99) - a pork bratwurst with bacon chipotle onion jam, chipotle aioli, and miso ranch. The bratwurst was delicious and again, the flavors worked well together. BTW, my wife had a Grimm Nothing But Citra ($8), an IPA that even I found acceptable. We really need to return here more frequently.

Bartender was friendly and responsive; we split the chicken bacon avocado sandwich and the bbq pulled pork mac. The chicken sandwich was nothing to write home about, but it wasn't bad either. The bun was a simple hamburger bun. The mac n cheese was top tier, came out piping hot and had a good amount of pulled pork and Cole slaw on it. Even between the two of us we had to take some home. Personally I would get regular Mac without the pulled pork next time. I also got a glass of the Italian pino Grigio which was pretty good and reasonably priced. Our meal came with free chips and dip, but we tried to hold out for the main course. I heard their burgers are divine, so I would come back for that and maybe get their home brewed beer. I liked the open barn style bar and would love to try the outdoor seating sometime.

The bartender seemed far more focused on socializing with friends, the hostess, and an off-duty employee than on serving the guests sitting at the bar. At one point, we sat for more than seven minutes with empty drinks at a bar that was nearly empty. Despite making several attempts to get her attention, we weren't acknowledged until another employee noticed us trying to flag her down and stepped in. Even then, there was no apology or acknowledgment of the delay. Unfortunately, this wasn't an isolated moment; it was the pattern throughout the evening. Conversations with coworkers & friends consistently took priority over customer service, leaving us feeling ignored despite the bar having very few customers. The food was still very good, but the level of attentiveness and professionalism from the bartender fell well below the standard.

(We were first in, but numerous groups followed as we sat.) When we tried to order, she still didn't look at us, then she leaned forward and asked what we'd said. This happened four times over the course of two basic burger orders. Another couple came in trying to get a refund for something. Miss Cashier either couldn't understand them or deliberately avoided dealing with it. The couple left, and she spent the next little while complaining about how hard her job was - loudly enough to be heard throughout the restaurant. A woman complained to the manager, whose solution was to turn the music up so the whining couldn't be heard. This is the first time in a 5 Guys that NO one smiled at us. NO one said "Hi" or "Thank you". NO one could be bothered with customer service except an older woman who seemed to be heading things up and handed us our food - at least she made eye contact. 5 Guys is usually pretty consistent. Not this one. Burgers were awful. Mealy in parts and hard and crusty in others - how do you do that when it's cooked at the same time? Buns were soggy for some reason, despite no condiments. Fries weren't even crisp. What a disappointment.

But the burgers are usually just how I expect it, not burnt, and always great. One thing I'd love to point out is that they seem to have (finally) changed the fry container from a coffee insulated cup which makes fries soggy to a normal paper bag type container. Montreal area had this last time I went to Canada and it was a welcome change. My order today came with the paper bag container for fries (plus the typical "bag fries" which are always a highlight)... and it was much better.
