Mostly gluten free and healthy portion sizes. - Grilled Chicken Swisswich - was an interesting mix of Bacon jam, gruyère, lettuce, avocado aioli on a toasted ciabatta. Not bad and came with some Herb fries. Service - (4/5) - servers were friendly and fairly attentive. Can get a bit busy and took bit longer than expected to get the order but regular check-ins afterwards. Atmosphere - (4/5) - it's at the bottom of the Edison Hotel so there isn't a dedicated restroom it's by the hotel lobby. Dim and homey feel to the layout and furniture/lighting. They have a partnership with a company that provides singing servers during dinner hour. Keep in mind they add a mandatory 5% fee on your bill for this! I did not experience the singing servers during my patronized visit. Upon entering the Maître d' announced "right now, we're only seating at the bar counter not at tables," so why do I see patrons sitting at booth tables? Oh! It was somewhat busy but not at full capacity for full-on hustle bustle busy. Seating for one, please. Me, myself and I. Friedman's is located adjacent to Hotel Edison and restroom facility is in the hotel's lobby. Access to Hotel Edison's facility is limited as the hotel's staff will stop all who enter as I am not a hotel guest. I believe Friedman's is very overhype, and overrated. My male server/waiter calls all the female patrons "love" which does not bother me and does not irk me at all. But please do not call me "babe", "baby", "mamma" or "mommy" as these are too sexist, outdated and stereotype in some cultures/race directed at women. Friedman's is certainly a modern American luncheonette. No comment for alcohol as I not order any. There are no business cards for keepsake. Pastrami on rye $26.00 Mustard, pickle and vinegar chips The meat heavily embedded with a lot of white fat stretched and stuck together when bitten. The meat tasted very bland lacking flavor. The mustard was mild spicy which gave the meat a zesty kick for aliveness, but minimally applied. The pickle was average. The vinegar chips were very stale and harden. The rye bread was average with caraway seeds which was blah. I am uninterested in caraway seeds. Katz's Delicatessen continues to reign supreme in pastrami on rye as the meat is excessively abundant quantity piled high and very flavorful taste without the need of mustard or mayo condiment. I prefer this sandwich accompanied with fries like Katz's Delicatessen offers. At the bottom of the sales receipt there is a suggested gratuity in intervals of 20%, 22% and 25% where customers do not have to perform math calculation. We met friends here that came in from out of town. We have been to the Friedman's in Chelsea Market, which we like, but this is the first time at this location. We had theater tickets so this was nearby. I made a reservation so happily they gave us a booth, which I prefer. Food was good and the server was very helpful and accommodating to my friend's request. The chicken Swisswich was delicious as were the blintzes with strawberries. The salmon salad not so much since the salmon is in pieces, not served whole and there was way too much greenery. My friend kept eating but the bowl was still filled with tons of not delicious greenery which she left. She liked the wild rice, beets and carrots in the dish but quinoa was virtually non existent. She overall liked the taste of the dish with the dressing but the greenery was overwhelming. We would definitely come back to eat here but skip the salmon salad. They have many gluten free options which is why we went here. Bathrooms are nearby but they are in the lobby of the Edison Hotel. These "Singing Servers" belt out Broadway musical tunes at a level where they should just drop their aprons and perform on stage. If you're looking for a nice quiet, romantic, cozy dinner, don't come to this Friedman's. Allyson, our Server, did a fabulous job at tending to us and her attentiveness was perfectly timed. Without a reservation, it was a 45 minute wait for lunch on a weekday so we tried again with reservation on a different day Chicken and waffles - The portion size is substantial with two breasts, two legs and a waffle. It's not your traditional Southern-style chicken and waffles with gravy and syrup. It's served with hot honey, but it sure needed some gravy because the chicken breast was slightly dry. A very good experience at this Friedman location. It is adjacent to the Edison hotel and conveniently located in the vicinity of the heart of Times Square. I arrived early on a Saturday, thinking I wouldn't need a reservation, however, the dining room was packed. I generally make reservations, but didn't think to do so on this occasion since I was dining early. The hostess saw my large family and despite not having a reservation was able to accommodate us with seating. And comfortable seating near the kitchen. Our dining table was scheduled for a large party within 45 minutes of our seating, however the hostess was able to make it work as we agreed I wouldn't dine longer than 45 mins. This was very good customer service and a win-win scenario in my eyes. Our server was friendly, helpful, and also accommodating. The food was delicious and fresh. I really enjoyed the pastrami hash. I believe they source quality ingredients from local farmers. The cuisine is comfort food at a higher level. Think the simplicity of a diner, but sophisticated for dinner service. The pancakes were absolutely delicious and worth the $20, but I'd suggest sharing because it comes with no sides. This was easily the worst meal we had in New York. We were there 11/26/24 and were seated promptly. I had a bad feeling about the place as soon as we sat down because it smelled so bad. I thought it smelled like a public restroom in a dirty fish market. My daughter insisted that it smelled like spoiled milk. Whatever was causing the odor, it wasn't pleasant. I was tempted to just walk out, and I wish we had, but we had show tickets and there probably wouldn't have been time to eat anywhere else if we left. Regrettably, we stayed. We ordered cherry blossom drink, nova benny with NO salmon, avocado toast with poached eggs, french toast, and pancakes. Of the food ordered, the pancakes were the most edible. They were heavy and not great, but still far better than the rest of our food. The french toast was so dry and overcooked that even with a lot of syrup, they were virtually inedible. The fresh strawberries on top were fine. The avocado toast was tasteless and the poached eggs, which they served on the side were underdone. There was still a lot of clear eggwhite on the exterior, which was not appetizing. My nova benny wasn't just bad - it was revolting. It was obvious that the cook or "chef" put the salmon on and then took it off. Either that, or they are storing the fish on top of the potato pancakes. I couldn't eat it at all. I tried eating some of the potato pancake and it was as if I was eating leftover crumbles at the bottom of a frying pan that had been heavily salted. Do people even eat that? It was hard, dry, salty and tasted like fish. My drink was fine. I guess it's hard to mess that up. The server picked up our plates which were mostly untouched. We were not asked if our food was okay. We were never offered refills. The service was terrible and it was obvious that the server didn't care. I told the kids the same thing my dad used to tell me when we visited a loser restaurant, "they can make us pay, but they can't make us eat it." We left hungry and with our wallet a little lighter. On the way out, we asked to use the restroom. They don't have one, at least that's what we were told. We were shown a line about 30 women long in the hotel lobby. Ha! What a way to finish an already terrible experience. We just left. On the way to the show, I asked my youngest child why she chose the restaurant and she said, "I saw it on Tik Tok." NOOOOO. I liked the green veggie options in my quinoa however the ratio of quinoa to veggie was so imbalanced. There was way more quinoa than I would've liked. And trust me, I love my quinoa but not this much. The entire bed was just quinoa. The tofu was firm. The matzo ball had good flavor, however it was basically broth and a few pieces of shredded chicken in broth and only a few minor pieces of carrot. The chicken wings were decent.
