Casual American style restaurant that had better than expected food for breakfast. My fiancee and I had nothing but disappointing experience at other restaurants and this place was like a breath of fresh air. The food wasn't out of the world good, but combined with ambiance, friendly customer service from staff, and decent food after having so many bad experiences, we enjoyed our dining experience. I would recommend this place to others who are looking for a decent breakfast/lunch spot that takes no more than 15mins to serve your food. The place is packed so expect to wait a while or make reservations ahead of time. Maybe it was the lady's first day on the job. Everyone seemed busy but she looked lost that day, didn't really know what to do. When we asked for our coffee she had to go confirm with someone as if the ticket wasn't already sitting in front of her. if the management team can train her better, it will improve customers' experiences. read more

During our stay at The Edison, part of the breakfast option was either grab-and-go or paying $6.50 for a sit-down breakfast, so we opted to eat at Friedman's and are so glad we did. The breakfast menu has about four options, and when I asked the server what was gluten-free, she immediately let me know there were two choices. I ordered the eggs any style with potato hash, and she confirmed they have a gluten-free toaster. The toast even arrived with a gluten-free pick in it, and the food was excellent. We loved it so much we ate there for lunch later that day. They clearly label gluten-free items right on the menu. Since it was packed and we didn't have a reservation, we had to sit at the bar, which still worked out great. We shared the spinach and artichoke dip, which also came out with a gluten-free pick. They even have gluten-free beers and ciders listed on the menu, and I really enjoyed the Original Sin cider. For my main course, I ordered the Impossible burger with cheese on a gluten-free bun, and I was thrilled to find out their fries are made in a dedicated fryer. There was a brief moment when I took the pick out and a server panicked, saying "oh no, it's not gluten-free," but I let him know I had already removed the stick. Overall, the food and service were fantastic, and I would highly recommend it! read more

Post-Theatre Sunday matinee of seeing "Hamilton," the musical lures me for a late lunch in NYC's Theatre District. Friedman's d/b/a Gayle's Broadway Rose where there are singing servers who are struggling actors/actresses attempting to get into the acting/stage/film industry while working in the food service restaurant business. I did not experience the singing servers during my patronized visit. Upon entering the Maître d' announced "right now, we're only seating at the bar counter not at tables," so why do I see patrons sitting at booth tables? Oh! It was somewhat busy but not at full capacity for full-on hustle bustle busy. Seating for one, please. Me, myself and I. Friedman's is located adjacent to Hotel Edison and restroom facility is in the hotel's lobby. Access to Hotel Edison's facility is limited as the hotel's staff will stop all who enter as I am not a hotel guest. I believe Friedman's is very overhype, and overrated. My male server/waiter calls all the female patrons "love" which does not bother me and does not irk me at all. But please do not call me "babe", "baby", "mamma" or "mommy" as these are too sexist, outdated and stereotype in some cultures/race directed at women. Friedman's is certainly a modern American luncheonette. No comment for alcohol as I not order any. There are no business cards for keepsake. Pastrami on rye $26.00 Mustard, pickle and vinegar chips The meat heavily embedded with a lot of white fat stretched and stuck together when bitten. The meat tasted very bland lacking flavor. The pastrami is NOT brined, seasoned certainly not smoked and not a hot sandwich. It is not cured pastrami. The mustard was mild spicy which gave the meat a zesty kick for aliveness, but very minimally applied. The pickle was average. The vinegar chips were very stale and harden. The rye bread was average with caraway seeds which was blah. I am uninterested in caraway seeds. Katz's Delicatessen continues to reign supreme in pastrami on rye as the meat is excessively abundant quantity piled high and very flavorful taste without the need of mustard or mayo condiment. I prefer this sandwich accompanied with fries like Katz's Delicatessen offers. At the bottom of the sales receipt there is a suggested gratuity in intervals of 20%, 22% and 25% where customers do not have to perform math calculation. I was able to obtain my sales receipt as keepsake. read more

This is a family run chain of casual american menu restaurants, with a focus on mostly gluten free items. Food - (4/5) - decent selection of starters, sandwiches, burgers and mains. Mostly gluten free and healthy portion sizes. - Grilled Chicken Swisswich - was an interesting mix of Bacon jam, gruyère, lettuce, avocado aioli on a toasted ciabatta. Not bad and came with some Herb fries. Service - (4/5) - servers were friendly and fairly attentive. Can get a bit busy and took bit longer than expected to get the order but regular check-ins afterwards. Atmosphere - (4/5) - it's at the bottom of the Edison Hotel so there isn't a dedicated restroom it's by the hotel lobby. Dim and homey feel to the layout and furniture/lighting. They have a partnership with a company that provides singing servers during dinner hour. Keep in mind they add a mandatory 5% fee on your bill for this! Overall - (4/5) - not a bad place and good for GF customers and those staying in the hotel. read more

All the gluten free options and singing servers! Sat at the bar and enjoyed and rouge cocktail then couldn't decide on a meal since it all sounded so good. Asked the bartender and he recommended the steak sandwich or chicken and waffles. I went for the chicken and waffles because I have never seen that offered as gluten free. It didn't disappoint! Crispy chicken, cheddar waffle and syrup. Then I decided on warm chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream. While I ate I enjoyed hearing the servers sing several songs from musicals. The did pass the hat to tip too, so be prepared! Perfect dinner before going to a show! read more

If you're looking for Broadway musical singers, and good food, this Friedman's is for you. The restaurant is lively, because the singing comes from the adjacent eatery called, Gayle's Broadway Rose. These "Singing Servers" belt out Broadway musical tunes at a level where they should just drop their aprons and perform on stage. If you're looking for a nice quiet, romantic, cozy dinner, don't come to this Friedman's. Allyson, our Server, did a fabulous job at tending to us and her attentiveness was perfectly timed. I started with a classic Margarita, with Sauza Tequila. The drink was well prepared and was strong. We both ordered the Friedman's Burger (All natural Angus beef, cheese, pickle, onions, lettuce, on a brioche bun). The burger was delicious, juicy, and the Sweet Potato Fries were salty and enjoyed, as well. This was an entertaining and enjoyable meal that I recommend to all Yelpers. read more

If you are looking for a solid, high-quality meal near Times Square, Friedman's at the Edison Hotel is a fantastic "good ol' standby." We visited in December, and since it was peak holiday season, the restaurant was incredibly busy and bustling. I highly recommend making a reservation--we had one, and it made the experience much smoother! We kept it simple for our meal: Asian Chicken Salad: Very fresh and flavorful. It's a great lighter option if you want something healthy but satisfying. Omelette: Cooked perfectly. You can tell they use quality ingredients. Coffee: Of course, we had to get coffee to fuel our day, and it was exactly what we needed--strong and hot. The service was efficient despite how crowded it was. It's a great spot for a pre-show meal or just a reliable breakfast/lunch while navigating Midtown. Definitely a place you can count on! And pretty much in the heart of the Theatre district - easy to get to! read more

Friedman's is extremely popular so reservations are a must or prepare to wait. Without a reservation, it was a 45 minute wait for lunch on a weekday so we tried again with reservation on a different day Chicken and waffles - The portion size is substantial with two breasts, two legs and a waffle. It's not your traditional Southern-style chicken and waffles with gravy and syrup. It's served with hot honey, but it sure needed some gravy because the chicken breast was slightly dry. The waffle was not crispy and a bit floppy providing little structure to eat it together with the chicken. Nova Benny - Delicious, perfectly poached eggs. The crispy latkes were excellent substitutes for the traditional English muffin. read more

This place is really something, we looking to get a breakfast and we decided to come here , automatic the hostess tells us to go to the next door hotel and drop our carryon luggage, was odd but ok , then bellman charges us for the luggage to keep there , most restaurants you can put your carryon on a side or under table , but first inconvenience... then waiter sit us and then we wait , wait and more wait , let's say 20 min pass and no one to take our order , I was about to walk out when suddenly waiter takes our order , then took some time to get our food but no drinks , more wait time . So definitely service is terrible , place is nice and menu doesn't have that many items on menu , which you wonder why they took so long to make things , price is a little high and food doesn't have anything special , going to a dennys could it be way better , yeap way better .... Totally mark this item as a no go again read more

Bottom Line: Ask for Drew or Thomas- but everyone is great, and the food is good too! Came up to NYC for the weekend, to catch a show on Broadway, and stopped in for a nosh. Wife & started with a Guinness (canned), Teen had a Shirley Temple. All good. Zero wait time on a Friday night. We were at first seated near a window, but our waiter Drew passed us over to a booth in the back to hear the singing. Which was awesome! Thomas took over from there, and got us settled & I had the Pastrami Ruben. Best I've had since my last trip to NYC. Wife had the french dip, teen had the burger (which disappeared!) All was good, Thomas took good care of us, and Drew dropped by to sing us a song later... great voice. Love the art deco styling, it's a full bar with knob creek whiskey, and booth or table seating. read more

A very good experience at this Friedman location. It is adjacent to the Edison hotel and conveniently located in the vicinity of the heart of Times Square. I arrived early on a Saturday, thinking I wouldn't need a reservation, however, the dining room was packed. I generally make reservations, but didn't think to do so on this occasion since I was dining early. The hostess saw my large family and despite not having a reservation was able to accommodate us with seating. And comfortable seating near the kitchen. Our dining table was scheduled for a large party within 45 minutes of our seating, however the hostess was able to make it work as we agreed I wouldn't dine longer than 45 mins. This was very good customer service and a win-win scenario in my eyes. Our server was friendly, helpful, and also accommodating. The food was delicious and fresh. I really enjoyed the pastrami hash. I believe they source quality ingredients from local farmers. The cuisine is comfort food at a higher level. Think the simplicity of a diner, but sophisticated for dinner service. Overall, a very good experience. I will visit again when in the area. read more

I will be dreaming about the chicken chilaquiles until I can get them again. If I pass before that please lay me to rest on a bed of those house made chips and green tomatillo salsa. We came for breakfast without a reservation and had no trouble grabbing a table on a Wednesday morning around 9 AM. I was torn between the Shakshuka and chicken chilaquiles but the waitress advised the shakshuka had a bit of a kick and I was nervous. It would be too spicy for me. My dish had a bit of a pop to it. I'm getting it next time. I also ordered a single pancake because I need something sweet to balance out the salty spicy. The pancake was a tad on the dry side and was very thick. The syrup is very thin so they did not do it for me. I am glad I had ordered salty as my main dish. Our server was accommodating and friendly, and kept our coffee filled. Went here before a show and didn't realize that the waiters/waitresses sing. So it's very difficult to have any conversation. They also come around for optional donations for the singers. They do sing quite well, it's just that I definitely have some damage to my hearing after that. It would be nice if they offered earplugs to dampen the noise, especially for younger children with sensitive ears, and just for safety sake. Got the Friedman burger which was surprisingly not bad, but it was more medium rare when I ordered medium. We ordered a bottle of wine, and they dropped the wine off (which was a tad warm) with the opener and carried on. Then the waiter came back just to grab the bottle opener for another table. They have a 60min limit at the table. read more

We met friends here that came in from out of town. We have been to the Friedman's in Chelsea Market, which we like, but this is the first time at this location. We had theater tickets so this was nearby. I made a reservation so happily they gave us a booth, which I prefer. Food was good and the server was very helpful and accommodating to my friend's request. The chicken Swisswich was delicious as were the blintzes with strawberries. The salmon salad not so much since the salmon is in pieces, not served whole and there was way too much greenery. My friend kept eating but the bowl was still filled with tons of not delicious greenery which she left. She liked the wild rice, beets and carrots in the dish but quinoa was virtually non existent. She overall liked the taste of the dish with the dressing but the greenery was overwhelming. We would definitely come back to eat here but skip the salmon salad. They have many gluten free options which is why we went here. Bathrooms are nearby but they are in the lobby of the Edison Hotel. The line for the ladies room can get long since only 3 stalls and tiny bathroom. read more

A gluten free heaven!! We got a reservation for a Saturday morning prior to a Broadway show.. the service was quick and efficient. Came here after seeing a show with my family of 6 to come to a festive, fun, unique dining experience. You need a reservation, especially around the holidays, but they do rush you, and you only have the table for 60 minutes. The real appeal is the fun singing all the servers do. Their voices were great! The food was... okay, but to be honest, you're not paying for the amazing meal, you're paying for the entertainment. The only reasons why it's not 5 stars, is being rushed, and honestly, it's hard to see the people singing. It was like a less fun and interactive Ellen's Stardust diner. read more

Friedman's is a classic spot for breakfast but make it kinda fancy. I went to the location at the Edison hotel which will take you back to the Jazz age. When I get breakfast there are just about two options for me: pancakes or waffles. I hate to be basic but a girl likes what she likes. I was between pancakes and french toast and decided to go for you guessed it... Pancakes Something about this pancake was very special compared to some others I've had before. I couldn't figure out what it was but I really liked it. The taste was very rich and the chocolate they used was not just hershey chips but something more real to the flavor. The only annoying part was paying like $8+ for a tiny orange juice. Like baby huh?? Regardless, I would visit again and it's great to know that most of their menu can also be prepared gluten-free. Ordered from Uber eats at Friedman's for lunch. The delivery and packaging were seamless. Ordered several dishes, I got the quinoa salad with tofu, matzo ball soup and chicken wings (shared). I liked the green veggie options in my quinoa however the ratio of quinoa to veggie was so imbalanced. There was way more quinoa than I would've liked. And trust me, I love my quinoa but not this much. The entire bed was just quinoa. The tofu was firm. The matzo ball had good flavor, however it was basically broth and a few pieces of shredded chicken in broth and only a few minor pieces of carrot. The chicken wings were decent. Overall, probably not order from them again. Dishes were meh, I did finish the matzo ball soup but sadly not all of the quinoa salad. read more

This was easily the worst meal we had in New York. We were there 11/26/24 and were seated promptly. I had a bad feeling about the place as soon as we sat down because it smelled so bad. I thought it smelled like a public restroom in a dirty fish market. My daughter insisted that it smelled like spoiled milk. Whatever was causing the odor, it wasn't pleasant. I was tempted to just walk out, and I wish we had, but we had show tickets and there probably wouldn't have been time to eat anywhere else if we left. Regrettably, we stayed. We ordered cherry blossom drink, nova benny with NO salmon, avocado toast with poached eggs, french toast, and pancakes. Of the food ordered, the pancakes were the most edible. They were heavy and not great, but still far better than the rest of our food. The french toast was so dry and overcooked that even with a lot of syrup, they were virtually inedible. The fresh strawberries on top were fine. The avocado toast was tasteless and the poached eggs, which they served on the side were underdone. There was still a lot of clear eggwhite on the exterior, which was not appetizing. My nova benny wasn't just bad - it was revolting. It was obvious that the cook or "chef" put the salmon on and then took it off. Either that, or they are storing the fish on top of the potato pancakes. I couldn't eat it at all. I tried eating some of the potato pancake and it was as if I was eating leftover crumbles at the bottom of a frying pan that had been heavily salted. Do people even eat that? It was hard, dry, salty and tasted like fish. My drink was fine. I guess it's hard to mess that up. The server picked up our plates which were mostly untouched. We were not asked if our food was okay. We were never offered refills. The service was terrible and it was obvious that the server didn't care. I told the kids the same thing my dad used to tell me when we visited a loser restaurant, "they can make us pay, but they can't make us eat it." We left hungry and with our wallet a little lighter. On the way out, we asked to use the restroom. They don't have one, at least that's what we were told. We were shown a line about 30 women long in the hotel lobby. Ha! What a way to finish an already terrible experience. We just left. On the way to the show, I asked my youngest child why she chose the restaurant and she said, "I saw it on Tik Tok." NOOOOO. Don't fall for it guys. There are FANTASTIC restaurants in New York, but this is NOT one of them. read more
