Yesterday my son and I wanted Poke. We really wanted Fresh Fin, we checked their hours online, realized that we had enough time and drove over. We arrived at 8:50, they close at 9:00 pm. We walked in and the young man told us that they were closed. He was sitting in the corner opposite the door, reading something on his phone. I told him that the door and everything else said that they close at 9:00. He said that those were summer hours and that they hadn't replaced them on the door or anywhere else. I asked what time do they close for winter hours. He said, and I quote, "I'm not really sure, I think 8:30." I knew at that moment that he was lying and didn't want to make our food. Freshfin always has the best quality and variety of products. Cost is something else. Every add on is $1+ and it makes no sense, why not just have that in the base price? You end up with a small to medium size bowl for $20+. Is it worth it? Sometimes, most of the time no. It's also a 50/50 shot on if the rice is cooked or not, which is always a big let down. Okay, so I'm giving this place 3 stars because even though the Poke was really good (honestly it's pretty hard to mess up), I do not think the price is worth it. You would be better off buying sushi grade fish and making your own bowl. It's really easy actually. I think it would be different if they actually filled up the bowl with the ingredients you want, but they don't. I really did quite enjoy the truffle crab salad. Again, this is really expensive. The service was really friendly though. I'll say that. And the place is nice and clean. Ambiance is modern. But it was so cold in there! FreshFin Poke is a great addition to Milwaukee's dining experience. Delicious food, great customization options and cute little ambience. The restaurant is small and clean and has enough tables to perhaps fit about 20-30 people. They have seating both indoors and outdoors. The staff is very kind and super helpful. They is an area where you can sit looking outside through the glass wall and it's kind of nice to eat and watch as the traffic goes by. They do catering as well if others are interested in hosting an event which I think is a great idea. The best part about their menu is how you can customize stuff. I liked two different kinds of bowls and ended up getting something in between with the help of their staff. The mango bowl and tuna bowl are amazing! Their are Chicken options as well for those who don't like the raw fish options. They also keep track of your orders from the past so Incase you go back and need something they can look it up. Also somewhere I can get an adult beverage, at minimum a beer! Freshfin location is solid, nestled on the Eastside of Milwaukee business corridor on North. I could see coming here for lunch if I worked near here but dinner again... Not when there's so many actual restaurants to choose from where I can feel the money spent was really worth it. This is not the best Poké in town--that distinction belongs to Ono Kine Grindz. But it is very good. It's in line with the trend of poke shops that seem to be cropping up all over the place--upscale fast-casual, with an emphasis on customization and healthy ingredients. This isn't a complaint, and the UWM-adjacent area is a good fit for one of these places. I have eaten at the restaurant a few times and also ordered delivery. I like to get the build your own bowl and experiment a little bit. I usually go with white rice as the base and tuna or salmon as the protein. The regular size is big enough for one meal, especially with the new combo option I saw tonight where you can get a side like edamame or seaweed salad with your Poké bowl for a small discount. A large is definitely enough for leftovers. I have taken leftover poke to work for lunch the next day and it's a lot better than I would have imagined. I like the little small touches at the restaurant, like the slightly dimmed lighting and the choice of condiments available including several kinds of furikake (rice seasoning). The reason I actually stopped in tonight is I remembered they have the Rishi turmeric ginger tea available. There are several other teas and juices displayed right by the register as well. My one quibble is that the delivery menu isn't always up to date or in sync with the menu at the restaurant. The poke bowls are the same prices, but the availability and pricing structure of the side items and drinks aren't always quite the same. So I have ordered something once or twice primarily to meet a delivery minimum only to be told it wasn't available. Not a huge deal. If you can make it out it's probably better to go to the restaurant anyway. read more

This is the only restaurant that I've ever had poke at so I don't have anything to compare it to, but simply by itself it's absolutely amazing. If you aren't sure what poke is, to me it's like sushi in a bowl. A deconstructed sushi roll if you will. It's a little pricey, but compared to sushi and seafood prices it's right on par. We stopped in on a random Saturday and they weren't very busy. I ordered the Mango Tango, but they were out of mango. That didn't really make sense to me as I feel like you should probably have all the ingredients (especially the main one) for your recipes, but I understand things happen. The cashier informed me they were out and then offered to substitute pineapple and any other ingredient I wanted due to the inconvenience which I appreciated. My husband built his own and had a great time doing so. The wait to get the actual bowls wasn't very long and they are presented very nicely. My only complaint is that I wish the bowls were slightly larger for the amount of ingredients that are in them. It made it very hard to mix up the bowls in order to get a bite of everything in one go. Or maybe serve a plate underneath them so we could potentially dump it out and mix it up. Or maybe I'm just eating it all wrong and I shouldn't be mixing it up. Regardless, the flavors blended beautifully and it was delicious. You felt full after but not that 'gross I can't move full'. It was more of a happy, pleasantly comfortable sort of full. I was excited to hear that FreshFin was opening a second location, albeit downtown. And all I can do is hope that in the near future they'll open one farther west in the burbs for those of us that aren't city dwellers! read more

The food here is very tasty, it's fresh and clean, it's a bit overpriced for counter service ordering. The young workers are polite and fast, just a tad annoying with the sing song flight attendant speech, but I'm a cranky old man. My biggest problem with the place is that it's not labeled accurately. This food is more accurately described as deconstructed American style sushi. Americanized sushi-in-a-bowl, as it were. As this is my first experience with sushi-in-a-bowl I would have to say it's the best sushi-in-a-bowl I've ever had. It's kind of a hipster interpretation of a Hawai'ian home made quick refrigerator lunch, so like the Chicagoan ex-pat who gets ketchup on a hot dog, or alfalfa sprouts on a pizza when visiting California, calling this, poke, does not sit right with me. I'm not happy with this poke fashion trend, it's ethnic commodification and a worrisome contribution to the over-fishing of Ahi tuna. I admit, principles aside, the food is pretty tasty. There isn't an attempt to be authentic, so if you're Hawai'ian, or craving authentic Hawai'ian, you will be sorely disappointed. Maybe even a bit offended. Of course the odd misspelling of poke should be a tip off. If you listen to actual Hawai'ian locals pronounce it in Hawai'ian pidgin the accent is on the first syllable (the word is not French in origin), and it doesn't quite rhyme with the Midwestern "hoke" as in "let's all do the Hoke Poke" nor does it rhyme with the Midwestern pronunciation of "okay," as in "I'm not okay with ethnic co-optation" but is rather something in between the two. I fondly remember my first encounter with real poke, I was visiting my sister who lived in Hawai'i, we were in a local supermarket and I asked for the "Hoke Poke." No one thought I was funny. My sister said, not meaning to be sardonic, "Here, the Hoke Poke is most certainly NOT what it's all about." Somewhat shamed I got the traditional he'e poke and wolfing that down in Ala Moana Park, had to return in less than 10 minutes to get some more. That day and every day for the next month. Locals explained to me that poke just means, cut up, in indigenous Hawai'ian. Originally made of the small reef fish from a catch that couldn't really be eaten any other way, it became a supermarket food. This new artisanal, gourmet ha'ole pseudo-poke is a little like adding saffron-infused nitrogen to Piggly Wiggly cole slaw and charging 10 bucks for a serving after changing the spelling (colé slau?). Not pineapple, not salmon, but rather octopus (or yes, ahi), kukui nuts, and like the Piggly Wiggly cole slaw, actual Hawai'ian poke has been sitting in the marinade since it was made in the morning. So, if authentic poke is what you want, you'll need to find Ono Kine Grindz in 'Tosa, or find a Hawai'ian place in the Bay Area, or any grocery in Hawai'i. read more

Some friends wanted to meet here before a Moth show but I didn't realize there were two locations so we actually waited at the third ward location for a bit before finding out the rest of our group was on north ave. The third ward location is quite different, a quieter & more relaxing feeling but the staff was still super friendly. They helped us put tables together for our group and we were even fortunate enough to meet a couple of the owners (kudos to them for being so hands on & being there as late as they were), who were very down to earth and obviously cared about the customer experience & overall satisfaction. They mentioned they also do catering and think it's a wonderful, new and healthy option for businesses downtown. After hearing the rest of our group was on north ave, we helped put the tables back but because this place is so close to work, it'll be great to stop here for lunch. Onto north avenue... we got rock star parking right in front and noticed the outdoor seating option right away (3rd ward didn't have that). Inside was packed but (AGAIN amazing service!) within a minute of our arrival, as we were talking to our friends sitting at a table for 4, an employee offered to put a couple tables together outside so we could all sit together. How super observant and love that the employee took the initiative to do that for us! Looking at the menu with sooooo many yummy options, I decided to build my own. The employee taking my order was really helpful and patient with me! She explained what the things were I didn't know (and helped pronounce half of them lol) and didn't get at all irritated when it took me longer than your average person to order (omg so many options!). My friend also built his own, we got our number, went to get our water & sit down with our friends. Also, LOVE the bottled ginger lemon honey to add to our water! An employee brought our food within 5-10 minutes and she even checked back a few minutes later to make sure everything tasted good. My bowl was AMAZING! Honestly, I'm almost questioning if this place is making any money with the quality of ingredients they offer & use. I got the ahí tuna and honua with a ton of add-ins and they didn't skimp on one thing. Big, fresh chunks of everything I asked for was in there. Everything was super fresh, very tasty and filling too. And if you're a garlic lover, get the crispy garlic!!! I wasn't sure what to think of this place & probably wouldn't have tried it if my friend didn't suggest this for dinner but since I was going to Hawaii in August, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to try some poké. Was hearing a lot of poke hype, so wanted to search out a place to try as I really didn't know much about it. They have a very cute, bright, and simple space, with very casual ambiance. It's a fast food style concept, sort of like a sandwich place or a build-your-own burrito place. Slightly uncomfortable chairs and tables. Far from a sit-down meal restaurant. When you enter, you are in line to order your food then seat yourself (or take to-go). They do have some suggested bowls, but we went for the option of build-your-own bowl. The crab salad is pretty great, love having the rice cracker to dip into it! The price seems pretty good for the seafood options! My impressions are poke and sushi are totally not equivalent. If you're looking for sushi, this is definitely NOT the place. Poke is cubed seasoned raw fish on top of a bed of rice-- so it's more like comfort style of deconstructed sushi (which OK, makes it seem like they are similar-- but they are SO different!). They do have options for cooked meats for those who are not into seafood like my DH. Definitely have went out of my way to grab a poke bowl to go from here. (They have online ordering options!) Edited for further clarity: Interior is east coast hipster, and clean - in a charming way. Chairs not the most comfortable and the high top is a little high from seats so kinda awkward to eat at for the shorties. So if you are on the shorter side I recommend eating at the tables. I used to eat here about once a week when they first opened and was OBSESSED. Eventually that obsession faded and I found myself not wanting to patronize this restaurant as often. My change of heart lied in the inconsistency of the entrees. When I first started eating here there bowls were pretty spot on every time. After a while of comfort their ingredient proportions became inconsistent, way too many edamame or overload of jalapenos. While their prices are reasonable for seafood/sushi I no longer found the price of the meal worth chancing some unruly flavors soiling the dish.
