we stopped in here with some vegan friends because we knew they had a decent sized vegan menu. Honestly all in all it was fine, but we weren't overly impressed with the place. The decor and ambiance is great but the food was kind of middle of the pack especially for the price that we paid for things. Service was a little lacking we not only had to wait for a person to get us a seat (there was plenty of seats open around the restaurant at the time) but we waited almost 40 minutes for food after ordering. We didn't get checked in on at all after the initial drinks they brought us until our food arrived. Once the food did arrive it felt like some of it had been sitting in the window a while. Only one of the 4 dishes was hot and the others were lukewarm to cold. I'd be willing to go back and give them another try but I will be cautious and probably go just for a quick appetizer and drink to see if service and food has improved at all. read more

I waited way too long to try this place. Big mistake. @frenchmeadowcafe in St.Paul is such a cozy lovely place for a meal. The food was amazing, hospitality was cozy, atmosphere was relaxing to be in. Their menu has much more we will need to return to try. They have an additional location in Minneapolis and a spot at the MN State Fair every year! I'm most eager to get back here to try breakfast soon! Brunch / breakfast is my love language. This place was perfect for the dinner atmosphere we needed on a cold MN evening. It would also be a great pick for date night. I used to go here all the time when I went to college in the area. It was a nice little throwback to come back on a Saturday morning around 9:30AM. It's much quieter around then which was nice because in the evenings, it can get very loud which makes it hard to have a conversation. I enjoyed a pistachio latte, my partner a mimosa. We each got our own main - him a burrito, myself a breakfast bowl (both delicious) - and split a corn pancake. We had plenty of leftovers to bring home. The selection is better at the Minneapolis location, but the St. Paul location has its own charm and still plenty of options for people who are vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. Service is uneven. Depends on the day and who's working your table. Today, Friday midafternoon, nobody even showed up to bring water and ask if we wanted a drink or order food. Had to go up to the bar and grab anyone who happened to come by. Food was ok, had walleye fish tacos. Drinks were NOT good! My companion ordered an espresso martini that bore no semblance to other venues - tasted like Folger's and cream, no vodka or Kahlua, no sprinkle of chocolate - looked good on paper, dismal execution. 3.2 beer had more flavor! I'm fond of this strip of between-two-universities businesses, and if a cute patio is a priority, this is the one you should choose. I came in for a weekend brunch and got Eggs Benedict. Very good; super creamy Hollandaise sauce. I asked about the seasonal lattes and received a lengthy verbal list that I couldn't keep up with; the one I picked was sweet and tasty, but I didn't detect any coffee flavor. Prices were on the high side for sure. Worth noting that the indoor and outdoor spaces are equally top-notch in ambiance. This restaurant really has so much to offer. From breakfast, lunch, and dinner to great coffees and pastries and a full bar with a great happy hour menu. Love all of the organic food on the menu. The food is always prepared so well with lots of fresh organic options. Great little patio at the back of the restaurant is worth checking out. Been to this location a few times and service is good but during busy times you will have to be patient. I have to say I feel the dishes and drinks are a bit overpriced but maybe that is justified with all of the organic ingredients. Definitely worth checking out. read more

When they brought it out the sliders had no aioli and the tuna melt had aioli which was exactly the opposite of what we asked for. When we told them the waiter said it was the server's fault for bringing out the wrong tuna melt. And we were told we had to wait for the check because the waiter was in the bathroom, despite there being other waiters there. This was WITH a reservation. I'm glad French Meadow survived Grand Avenue reconstruction. Visited here after a long absence. Seating was plentiful for late lunch. The beef rib sandwich did not look large, but it delivered bigly! Very tender beef. Lots of umami. The mini-baguette was crunchy and fresh. FMC adds pepperoncinis which perfectly complimented the beef and slab of melted (gruyere?) cheese. Finally got my Rachel sandwich and it was greasy and the turkey was super dry. AGAIN, had to find the owner to get our bill and was given this sob story about how a cook quit and there seemed to be something wrong with the server. Not even an offer to reduce our bill. I did not give a very good tip. The owner claims to have been in the business for 40 years but here is a tip you may have not heard before: you DO NOT throw your staff under the bus. My 3rd time eating here but was not wowed today. I ordered their rachel with french fries and the sauerkraut had such a strong vinegar taste I could only eat about 1/4 of it and I always get a side salad verses fried but I saw fries on another plate that was served at table next to us and was disappointed that they were only luke warm. My cousin had the special of the day which was a tutu bowl that she loved, wasn't the prettiest as it was very green but she liked it, my aunt had a tuna melt with their firecracker cole slaw and she never commented wether she liked it or not so ??? Well, what can I say, this location has good food but bad service, at least on this visit. We got some food for take out and we were going to get a latte to go as well. The young girl greeted us at the counter and we said we just needed some coffees and to retrieve our food sitting right behind her. Some others walked in to be seated, so she ignored us and proceeded to seat two other groups that arrived after us and then never returned. We had to ask another person if we could just get our food and to forget the lattes, the older lady apologized and said she was the owner and she knew the young girl had ignored us. I don't know why saying she was the owner would help.... Sadly we will stick to the Minneapolis location, better service, more selections of pastries and more seating. read more

This is the location I frequent when I'm in town. (There's a second one that had a rodent problem, but this is not that location.) They were recently named best plant based food in MSP and I honestly question who they asked, because there are over half dozen other dedicated veg spots who have entered the chat and would like a word. Anyway, I tried this place because I wanted some vegan breakfast. Blueberry Corn Pancake was pretty tasty. It's one huge pancake but they only give you one little syrup container. I'd buy extra syrup next time. I veganized the Cajun Hashbrowns by omitting cheese and requesting vegan sausage. These were delicious, but not cajun. No spicy factor and no cajun flavor, but still very good. The potatoes were shredded and crispy on top, just like I like 'em. It was filled with veggies that tasted as if they were fresh from the garden. The sausage was good, but not the best. Overall, I loved this dish and would definitely order it again. Large portion! I tried a side of tofu scramble. It was gross. There's an extremely heavy (what I think is) vinegar presence. I couldn't stand another bite. Healing Plate - one of the healthiest and most delicious meals I'd had in a long time. Tofu, brown rice, greens, micro greens, coconut red beans and sweet potato mash (that were both insanely delicious!), topped with an accompanying dressing. I repeat ordered this dish about 3 or 4 times. Tempeh Tacos were very good. Excellent tempeh flavor! I also tried the vegan chocolate turtle cake. It was dry and stale. I informed the restaurant of this, via the square survey, and never received a response. I'm not a fan of ignoring customers when they tell you about a mistake. Surely, serving stale cake was a mistake, and an expensive one at that. Regardless, there are a couple of more things that I'd like to try on their lunch menu so I will return...eventually. read more

We love this place! The owner is so kind and friendly! The food is great! I had the vegan breakfast tacos. Best tacos I've had anywhere in months. So good I had them on the second visit two days later. Coffee is good but the nitro cold brew is a skimpy for the price. We love the ambiance, too. It's been awhile since I've been to French Meadow Bakery and Cafe.I've frequented the one near Uptown and decided today after many years to try the one in Saint Paul. There isn't t much parking since they are near St Thomas University and its bustling area.Lots of other businesses. Once I got inside there was a lot of seating at 1pm.My wife and I were greeted with smiles right away.Promptly seated we orders some coffee while examining the menu.It is an extensive menu and everything looked good.Breakfast is served until 3pm y'all. All of the good cafe smells were enticing us to order quickly as our stomachs couldn't wait.After some suggestions we went with the Rueben and Turkey and bacon croissant.The bread was toasted perfectly on my Reuben and the homemade sauerkraut was made well.My wife and I swapped sandwiches and her Turkey and bacon croissant was yummy! I met 2 friends here for brunch yesterday. Parking is easy on the street or a small lot reserved across the street. This is a cute part of St. Paul for sure. We made advanced reservations for 10:30. We were seated promptly, but that was the end of anything prompt for the next 2 hours - ha! Service: slow and inattentive. We were seated in a booth through the restaurant and behind the bar. While the lighting and ambience is fine, both of the bench seats in our booth had broken springs it was very noticeable - it literally felt like we were sinking 6 inches down into a huge pothole in the vinyl pads. Our server was pleasant, however she rarely came by our table and we had to flag her down after 30 minutes just to place our order. I ordered coffee when we sat down, and after that never once in our whole time at the table did she offer to bring me more hot coffee or refill my cup. It seemed really disorganized because there were like 3 different servers coming in and out of our section. After we got our food she never came by the table to see how things were or check back until we asked for the bill. Also, there was a line out the door when we finally left so definitely a missed opportunity for this place. Food: Ok. I ordered the avocado toast with eggs over easy. The avocado was generous and well seasoned - very tasty! But the toast was not crunchy so it was like thick white bread, and the eggs were cold. One companion ordered eggs and bacon and the bacon was quite limp and fatty. My other friend ordered Cajun hash browns which she enjoyed. Been to French Meadow twice now: first time was a bit of a subpar experience (had to remind about a coffee that never got delivered, then the coffee had a gnat or some other bug in it, and food was just okay except for the fries which were great) but the staff was very nice and I'd heard good things so I knew I wanted to come back. Second time was there this past weekend as a walk in - the hostess let us know when a seat yourself table became available as it was quicker than if we waited for a table we put our name in for. Food was enjoyed all around and I finally noticed all their dietary dessert accommodations! Dairy free and gluten free cakes?? Amazing little spot. I thoroughly enjoyed having brunch here on their outdoor patio. There is something about the yellow benches and enclosed patio with greenery all over that is just so inviting. It was such a lovely place to dine. I chose the egg croissant without bacon because I love a buttery croissant. This breakfast crossaint was everything. We arrived at about 5:45 Friday . It took over an hour for our meals to come. Two tables that arrived 25 minutes after us were served and nearly done eating before ours came. We arrived for a 5:30 reservation and by the time we got our food it was 6:35. A few of us ordered soup, which came out with the main meal. When we asked the manager why it didn't come out first, she said with an attitude "that's just the way we do it here." In my experience usually soups and salads come out first. Very cute bakery cafe and bar! They serve organic and sustainably sourced ingredients with an emphasis on serving slow food - how amazing!! I had the Tempeh Reuben was was flavorful - a little too salty for my taste but still very good. The salad and the kombucha were also yummy! I tried my friend's California wrap which was also flavorful and delicious! The fries are good in an average way. Some of the other reviews had poor service, but I thought our server was friendly and attentive! To get to the dog-friendly patio, you have to walk through the restaurant. Super cute with string lights and a mix of wooden booths and round tables. The restaurant is connected to an apartment building, so check the door to make sure you're going the right way. read more

French Meadow once was a nice place to visit for tasty vegan and gluten free meals. The last couple of visits my husband and I had were awful. We went out for brunch in late October and the food was terrible and service was almost nonexistent. The restaurant only had a few tables full at the time and it took a long time for our server to appear after we were seated. Our appetizer was great! But the main courses were practically inedible. I had ordered the ' classic vegan breakfast' and the scramble tasted only of salt and turmeric. The potatoes were so overstated that my mouth puckered. My husband's meal was also horribly salty. He had ordered a hash brown dish. Potatoes should have been the star, but the little bit that was offered was smothered in an oily cheese. Both the vegan and regular chorizo tasted heavily of cinnamon, which seemed odd. Our waitress basically had abandoned us, so by the time she showed up, we just wanted to go home. Send it back while we were already stuck waiting disappointed? We simply gave up and I went home hungry. We didn't even want to bother with our original plan to get tea and coffee to go. We went to a coffee shop where we were not ignored. We threw our leftovers away almost immediately. My husband stopped by gas station on the way home to toss his dish in the garbage because he didn't want to smell in his car. Our meal with the tip was close to $70.00. We threw through most of that money away. Today my husband brought a friend to French Meadow for pastry and a coffee. He figured a he would give them a second chance. How could coffee and already made baked good go wrong? Well . . . Once again, service was nonexistent. After sitting at a table for a while, it took a long time to place their order. After they got their order, they chatted for a bit, their server seemed absent. They tried to get attention so they could pay, get a box for his friend's brownie, and leave. They were told a couple of times that they needed to wait for their waitress to return. They gave up and went to a register. They received pushback to return to their table. When they were finally allowed to pay at a different register and our friend got his take home box, he went back to their table only to find that his $6 brownie was gone. He rightfully exclaimed "so quick to clear the tables, but no checking in on the customers?!" He went on to say "next time I'll choose the restaurant!" How disappointing and embarrassing. Our dinner experiences have been better. Perhaps there is a problem with the morning crew? Not sure we will be going back again as we do not like wasting money or food.
