Thank goodness for Freehouse. After spending my first few weeks in Berkeley fighting throes of undergraduate students to get a beer, I was pleased by the prompt service, booze selection and ambiance of Freehouse. Frankly, I certainly can't hate on a place that has a huge patio with heat lamps, fireplaces, comfy furniture, a nice beer selection and a SUPREME whiskey selection (ooh, lawwdy!). My boyfriend and I stumbled in for supper on a Wednesday and really enjoyed ourselves. The service was good, drink selection was great, and our food was nice. Granted, we had the pizza of the day and split a wedge salad which aren't terribly difficult dishes; I've never met a pizza I didn't like and I would consider drinking bleu cheese. Still, we were pleased. My only complaint is their very limited wine choices but seeing as cooler temperatures are on the way, I'll happily stick to beer and whiskey! I might have received the worst service tonight. Sat down in the patio to have a few drinks. Order was taken by a waiter, who murmured something rude under his breath, but I chose to disregard. Was, however, served promptly. But then, never got attended again for the next hour and a half. No napkins/utensils, nor were we asked if we'd like another drink. I spent about another 20 minutes trying to flag our waiter down, then I finally did and asked him for the check, I got an eyeroll(!) and was subsequently tossed the checkbook. This place has a great feel to it. It is definitely more upscale than all the bars in Berkeley yet still feels very cozy. I absolutely love the outside patio portion of it and really can't wait to eat out there during the day (but I went Saturday and it didn't open till 5). They have an insane selection of whiskey which isn't my drink of choice but I had some and it was reasonably priced ($6 for about 2.5 shots). The bar tenders and waiters are super friendly. Seeing that whiskey isn't my thing, the bartender was super helpful in helping me choose one. Now about the food- so good. We ordered the fries which came in a bucket and had chipotle ketchup, garlic aioli, and curry aioli as dipping sauces. Loved the first two, curry just isn't my thing either. This was about $6 Also tried the mussels which were delicious. The broth they come in was so good. The server brought us extra bread to dip it in. It also came with a side of fries too which was great for the leftover sauces. This appetizer was $12 which was well worth it since it came with about 20 mussels. I definitely see this becoming somewhere I will go whenever I want to get away from the younger crowds in Berkeley (not that I myself am older). But it's nice to pretend every now and then. I hate to write a bad review about Free House after many positive experiences. However this AWFUL incident and poor customer service leave me no choice. Walking into the restaurant on a Thursday evening, my party of 6 was hostilely turned away because the bouncer thought we were drunk and coming from a party bus (which we were not and he erroneously claimed was against policy). After a woman in our party asked for the manager, the bouncer began to violently curse at her. When I calmly asked him not to, HE GRABBED ME BY THE NECK and forced us out of the restaurant. This kind of harassment is worthy of substantial discipline, termination, and compensation. For some reason, I decided not to call the cops and wanted to speak with the manager instead. It was a shame that this one bouncer had to ruin all of our nights. Thankfully (and most importantly) I wasn't hurt. However this episode is unbelievably shocking and CANNOT happen again. The owner called me relatively soon afterwards and asked to meet with me. He apologized and offered to buy our party dinner and drinks (the least he could do). He promised me he would follow up with his plans for this inconsiderate bouncer. He tried calling once as I was boarding a plane but never followed up again. I went into the restaurant asking for him, but again, was left without a response. This incident, followed by this poor customer service and blatant lying, is completely disrespectful and unacceptable. As a student at UC Berkeley, I feel that this kind of incident is worthy of restaurant closure. I hope you will choose again before returning to this establishment. read more

I came here for appetizers and drinks with a group, and had a great time! We sat around the fire pit outside, which was really cozy - and I think I tried every appetizer on their menu, haha. My favorite was easily the glazed pork belly sliders, which were on some sort of sweet, almost French toast-y bun - not to miss!! I also thoroughly enjoyed the tostaditas, which were like light, super lemony nachos. Couldn't stop eating those things - yum! The brussels sprouts were also on point - and surprisingly sweet. The garlic fries, buffalo wings, and pretzel knots were fine - nothing special - but I'd probably skip them next time in favor of the sliders and sprouts. I really didn't like the sweet potato fries, though - they were apparently dusted with cocoa nibs, which sounded great, but ended up just tasting super bitter and burnt to me. Oh well. I will start with the bright side... Location is great, mostly if you are a law student or live in iHouse. Food is ok, the best options are the burger, mac&cheese, chicken salad, sweet potato fries and bread pudding. However, they are all overpriced in my opinion. The white wine is terrible. Can't tell about beers because I'm not a fan in general... And now, the rest... The tables inside are as dirty as can be, your stuff (or yourself) gets stuck on top even after having someone clean them. Toilets always smell bad, regardless the time of the day. And the worst... The staff!!! After Scott, the nicest member working there, is gone, you will most likely be ignored by anyone attending the tables or the bar. That is, of course, if you are lucky enough not to be mistreated by the rudest doorman due to your nationality. I've heard him saying "I don't read Mexican IDs" and "sorry, I don't read Spanish" to people trying to access the place right after myself. Little detail: I'm from Spain and could enter both times... So do your math. Sadly, I will not be back. And I said sadly mostly because going there became some sort of tradition, not because it is worth the visit. * I have to clarify that there are two other servers that are very nice, but I don't know their names... A blond girl in the lunch turn and a guy with his head shaved that is there in the evening. They both smile to you, which is highly appreciated in a place where attitudes are in order every minute. I've been to Free House 25+ times and made it back last night....proximity to campus is a huge PLUS and this is usually where I end up after Cal Football games. We also tend to have a majority of our post-work drinking/eating gatherings here. Biggest thing for me is the outdoor space in the back. It's a great gathering spot for groups of people. On a nice day it's perfect to sit back, relax with a beer, and laugh the night away. On those colder nights they have multiple fire pits. --DRINKS-- Very good selection here. Their house cocktails are $8 which isn't bad at all, but I'm usually going for beer. They've got the classics and more: Anchor Steam, Sierra Nevada Pale (and rotating season tap), rotating Lagunitas Tap (Little Sumpin' Sumpin', Hop Stoopid, Brown Shugga, Undercover Shutdown), Linden Street, Lost Abbey Devotion, Trumer, North Coast, Stone Brewing, and Black Diamond. --APPETIZERS/STARTERS-- I usually go with the GIANT PRETZEL for $7.50 with cheddar pilsner sauce, ground mustard, and ketchup on the side. It's definitely big enough to share with a couple people as a snack. The HAND CUT FRIES ($5) and SWEET POTATO FRIES ($8) are also a go-to because they come with awesome garlic aioli and chipotle ketchup. I hear the MAC N' CHEESE is solid as well, but it's $10 (add $1.50 for bacon). --SANDWICHES/ENTREES-- I've had a lot here: grass fed burger ($10), grilled chicken ($11), black bean burger ($10), pulled pork ($10), pan seared turkey burger ($10), and chicken pot pie ($12). Food wise, nothing really stands out to me as amazing. If you're hungry and planning to stay for a few drinks go for it. If not, you're not missing anything. --CONCLUSION-- I like this place. Free House was definitely "Meh." Nothing was terrible, but nothing was great. Sweet potato fries came with three interesting dipping sauces and were nicely seasoned, which I appreciated, but the fries were served in a bucket shaped dish so obviously they all got steamed while we ate and the ones not at the very top got soggy/lost their crisp. Rookie error! My friend got the black bean burger which was very ordinary. The chicken pot pie had a cozy presentation but was very difficult to eat without making a mess. One of my friends found bits of broken glass in her water. Another friend found a dead bug underneath her food on her plate. When she mentioned this to a server he made some bs excuse about this happens alot (wth?) and that because their meat is really fresh/organic/whatever or something so it's only natural that you might find bugs in it (I don't even know what that means and it doesn't explain why the bug was outside of the meat, not inside it or something). I was on my way to the Greek Theatre for the Postal Service Concert when I needed a pit stop at a local watering hole. This place, being new since my undergrad days, seemed intriguing and I thought it would quench my thirst. My mates and I walked in and I asked if they had happy hour, the bartender lady working that Sat 7/29 evening flat out said "no", with no other inviting remarks. Really, anything else, such as "no, but please have a seat", or "no, but our drinks are really good", or "no, here's our menu" would've gotten us to stay and gotten them at least 6 drinks of quick business. I can honestly say that the worst customer experience in my life took place at Free House. The waitress taking my order was beyond drunk and threw my ID at me after failing to read it. Her "manager" was equally drunk and even more rude while trying to remedy the situation. Furthermore, I was overcharged for a simple order and chastised for asking why. So I'm giving this place 3 stars for the food and 1 star for the service. I ordered the free house burger. It was okay, but could have used more seasonings. My friend ordered the steak fillet with sweet potato fries. He said it was just okay too. Our 1 star service, on the other hand, was sub par. I've been to this beer garden before (with a group of predominately white doctoral students). Yesterday I went with my other black male friend, and our waitress was so RUDE. She brought the check before I was finished eating, and hovered over us for the next 20 minutes. She was clearly annoyed with our presence, and didn't want us there. Food was super average but also pricey so definitely not worth it. I ordered the chicken pot pie and our table had fried pickles and chicken wings to share. Fried pickles were interesting (I love pickles) but definitely just a one time thing to try. Chicken wings were nothing special. The chicken pot pie was good BUT it was almost all "crust" (which isn't normal pot pie crust, but rather a bread base and top). There was way too much bread and not enough filling. Pros: - Great selection of beers - Some very good food: try the fries (yummy sauces!) and pot pies - Ambiance is great indoors, and outdoors in fair weather Cons: - Price. $6 for a normal beer? Isn't this a college town? Get back down to $5 please. No pitchers either, so not likely to bring a group here - their loss. - Service: I really like some of the bartenders, but the greeters and waiters need training. I was ID'd 3 times the last time I was there (twice by the same person), and I'm nearly 26. And some of the waiters are visibly annoyed if you call them over - but they haven't been to your table for half an hour. I would love to feel more welcome here - and to be able to afford to come here - more often. Happy hour prices might help with the latter. read more

Aside from the fact that they rarely change their specials menu, there are larger issues here. Specifically, the really, really poor service. Even when this place is not busy the waiters/waitresses seem to have a hard time remembering to take orders, remembering to fulfill orders, remembering to clear your table, or remembering that you're a customer in a restaurant at their table, in their section, that they work in. You would think that even one of said waiters/waitresses would want to earn their tip/keep, but nope, not one. One particular server enjoys ringing up patrons without providing an itemized receipt, thus, you have no idea what he may or may not have charged you for. Only until you specifically request an itemized receipt does he so reluctantly oblige you. The food is okay, nothing to write home about, but not bad. OMG service is poor! I've been here 3 times now and every time service is really poor. Outdoor patio is nice (especially with the fire place), but by virtue of being outside the waiter never comes to you. Both times we sat outside, we'd have to send someone inside to grab the waiter, or we just went directly to the bar to order a drink. Cocktails are expensive! Food looks good, but again expensive! I'm not a beer connoisseur so I won't comment on the beers besides that they aren't brewed in house. If I were to go to a beergarden in Berkeley, I say stick with Jupiter's. It's been awhile since I've Yelped and Free House was just the place to inspire me to start reviewing again. I never thought I'd have the opportunity to have the best pork chop ever until Chef Kevin emailed me to let me know his menu is up and running at Free House. I usually like to stick to my area of the Bay, but it's definitely worth a trip out to Berkeley to visit Free House. Ambience is great, Beer selection looks on point (couldn't try out any beers due to being preggers). But the FOOD, my oh my, that's where it's at. Started off with the pretzel, mac & cheese, and black bean cakes. All worth trying. Then it was on to the Pork Chop....let's just say it was heaven! The hubby had the cassoulet, he loved it as well. Our friend had the skirt steak and cleaned the plate off. Ended with dessert, strawberry shortcake and bread pudding. They definitely don't skimp on the portions. I will definitely be back! GSI Central. I've seen so many of my graduate student instructors here, it's unbelievable. What was once Adagia, Freehouse has a great outside patio area, pool table, tv with sports, spacious seating, a fireplace...A FIREPLACE, and a great bar area. Did I mention fireplace? GSIs must love fireplace chats with fellow GSIs. The buttermilk fried chicken tasted a bit like blue cheese even without the dip! I recommend their lager bottles- $3 or $4 (for stella!!!) They have a huge selection of beers. Some of them are pretty inexpensive, but for the most part, it's a bit pricey. The food is also a bit higher than college fare...possibly why this place is packed with GSis? Another knock would have to be their one restroom...for both genders! The patio out back seems nice - we were first seated out there next to the gas fireplace, until it started to drizzle, and they reseated us inside (before we had ordered). I got the pot pie of the day (steak), which was excellent. The belgian-style pranqster beer I had was also very good, and the mussel starter that one of our table ordered was tasty. I've been to Freehouse a couple of times and I generally enjoy the environment and food. There are very few places on the South side of Berkeley, besides Henry's, that are sit-down and relatively upscale, so I enjoy coming here for the fancier occasions. The food is mainly American, and there is a diverse menu of drink options as well. Atmosphere: The restaurant has almost a old London tavern feel. You first enter Freehouse through a large wooden door, and walk into a dimly lit room with iron chandeliers and a fireplace. There is usually a crowd anytime during the day (especially crowded at night), which adds to the liveliness of the place. Service: The servers at Freehouse are all very friendly (and some, very good looking). They try to make conversation with you, ask you how your day was, and treat you like a new friend they are meeting, not just some person they are forced to serve. The speed of the food is pretty good too. When I last came here, we ordered our food and it came in less than 10 mins. Food: The food is actually the part of Freehouse that is probably the most lacking. Freehouse really sets itself up to be a great place. Great location, friendly people, good looking menu. But the actual food is pretty mediocre - not bad, still tasty, but nothing too amazing. I've had a couple of menu items at Freehouse: 1) Freehouse chicken salad: This is probably my favorite. You can't really go wrong with salad, but the dressing was pretty good. The blue cheese crumble and the pears go so well together and give the salad a nice, unique fresh taste. 2) Mary's grilled chicken: My second favorite menu item. The chicken is very tender and the cheese and the garlic aioli makes the sandwich very creamy and flavorful. However, the bacon made the sandwich a little bit heavy. I could only really eat half of the sandwich. 3) Freehouse grassfed burger: Tasted very similar to the chicken sandwich, except with a burger instead in the middle. The burger is alright - a little bit too greasy for me. Nothing too special. 4) Black bean cakes: I was also a little disappointed with the black bean cakes. They taste like something you could've bought and microwaved from trader joes - from the corn salsa to the creamy chipotle sauce. A rare and well deserved date night for myself and my meat-loving partner, and we were disappointed. To be fair, we were in the heart of the storm when we tried Free House. Paul Simon was in town and the restaurant was packed on a Friday. However, we chose to wait to order until until most of the Paul Simon crowd left in hopes that we would get a better experience with our food. Unfortunately, the burger was overcooked, in spite of our request to have it cooked medium rare. The French dip, was the least successful & lacking in texture. The roast beef undercooked and chewy, and the flatbread was chewy too. Positives: The wings which we ordered while he waited for a table were tasty and we enjoyed the selection of brews. The gal at the bar, whose name I cannot remember but I know it was her last night, was a lovely service person and really went above and beyond to ensure we got our wings. Our table server it was also very friendly. Given the quality of the food and the high ticket price for each item (our meal with pints & tip cost us over $120) we'll likely not be back. I went to Free House prior to a concert at Zellerbach Hall....I will NEVER go back and it is not the food as i never had a chance to try the food. It is not clear you have to wait to be seated or seat yourself - turns out you grab a menu and seat yourself - this was not the problem. The problem was that after we sat down we were ignored - no sliverware no greeting no water - NO SERVICE AT ALL - this was after sitting at the table fro 15 minutes - we just left - DO NOT GO HERE AT ALL! read more

Came here for dinner and beers with a group of friends. I was really impressed with the vibe of the place. The beer selection was great and the drinks were priced reasonably ($8). I had the Special Burger. It came with Pepper Jack and bacon and it was seriously the best burger I've ever had. Ever. I would go 5 stars if that were the total experience but my girlfriend had a creamed soup that tasted like Progresso soup out of a can. The other food selections were pretty ordinary. But it's a very cool place with a great patio. There is no doubt that you are right on the campus of UC Berkeley and the clientele and servers remind you of that constantly. I am a fan of freehouse because it's one of the few places near campus that is clean, has food, and has reasonably priced drinks for you to enjoy over a conversation. Kips/Pappys get old because they're usually much messier, much louder, and just don't have the atmosphere that Freehouse gives: relaxed and low-key. Reasons why it is 3 stars: 1) Horribly inconsistent service. Sometimes, I'm served right away, our waiter is attentive, and I get in and out of there with a couple drinks in about an hour or so. Sometimes it takes about an hour to just get seated, get a drink and wait for our waiter to come back to get us another round or get our check. The waiters like to talk to each other or hide in the back, and sometimes literally walk past you as you try to flag them down. Be prepared for great service or very very bad service. 2) Wine Selection--can you add more than chardonnay and cabernet? So many beers, some more wines would be nice! 3) Unseasoned food--the mac & cheese needs salt, spices, hot sauce, ANYTHING to make it tasty. As one of the few vegetarian dishes on the menu, I expected better. 4) Closes at midnight...so early! I wish it was open a little later on weekends at the very least. Good stuff: 1) Yummy ginger beers, wide drink selection (get the Diablo cocktail-yum!), and extremely tasty potato fries. 2) Lots of seating (albeit crowded) which makes it easy to find a seat here on week nights. Verdict: Good place for the homey environment and proximity to campus. I go back regularly, but have moved on to just drinks so as to avoid the long long wait times. read more

This place wasn't the tops for me. The coolest part was the interior, high ceilings, stained glass. The food, however....mehhhhhh. First of all, their offerings are pretty limited. The chicken pot pie wasn't super appetizing, neither was the burger, and the salads all seemed middle-of-the-road. I had the big pretzel and the vegan chili, and to be fair, the pilsner cheese sauce for the chili was good. But I was all over underwhelmed. Won't go back. The good: sweet interior. This place seems to be getting slammed by past reviewers for some strange reason. My pals and I stopped here for a few beers on a rainy afternoon as we toured the Cal campus. Decent selection of pint pours from local craft breweries all for about $5... Not bad. Our server was efficient in delivering them to us and making any necessary refills during our stay. The house being a retired fraternity house is really cool! We were in between meals so we didn't order any but the menu seemed decently priced. Wow. It is still a hotel lobby but a hell of a lot more comfortable and a major upgrade from what is was before. Dark wood, Fireplace, Couches, Really nice pool table and a lot of beer. Food looked and smelled excellent but i didn't order food so i can't really speak to it. They have an impressive tap list and a full bar as well. They had both beers one would expect as well as exciting things like Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin and Le Merle Saison and Lost Abbey Deliverance. Friendly staff as well. This place's days are numbered. The only things it has going for it are the cool dark wood decor and central location. The food seemed to have a lot of potential at first glance. Good ingredients were listed...grass fed beef, Acme bread...the only problem is that they combine these ingredients to make terribly mediocre food. Also, the service is really deficient. The first time I went for appetizers and drinks, the staff was very disorganized and different people kept coming over to us to see if we had ordered. Then they proceeded to give us the bill while we were eating. Not very polite. The second time I went for lunch, they made a HUGE deal about letting us order a piece of bread alongside a salad and then gave us the bill again while we were still eating. We went after the Cal Football game turned into a route of UNC. The service was excellent, great atmosphere, the burgers and fries were very very tasty, and the Alameda Pilsner was worth a refill or two, lol! read more

Decent food but horrible service. Even with multiple staff members they are lacking to keep up with a basic amount of customers. They also made us wait in the front of the line to order for an excessive amount of time while meandering around the restaurant. Will not be returning. read more
