I just finished one of the best "60's" style hamburgers I have had in a long while. I had the hamburger special for $9.50. It was a regular size hamburger, bigger than I thought it would be, fries, a drink and a sundae. It was plenty of food and I thought a good value. The service was excellent. The building reminded us of our old high school hangout in the 60s. Overall, it was a very nice experience. CAUTION: they only accept real money. No credit or debit cards. PS. They have bee in business for over 60 years, so they must be doing something right. read more

The staff was fantastic and the ice cream was decent. However, the actual quality of the food is on par or well below that of very basic gas station food. Any mainline fast food chain would have 10x better quality of food. Freezer burned "chicken strips" for the kids and stay away from the Mex Platter. As a side note, they only take cash. read more

Ok I'm giving Fred's 4 stars. And all we had was some onion rings and malts. I simply can't pass up places like this on my road trips even when I'm not hungry. But 4 stars seems really high for such little sampling. I will explain. Of all these little home town diners/cafes/burger joints I've ever been to Fred's is THE CLEANEST one I've ever been in. Yeah it's dated, and nothing much is new in there, but there is no greasy grime feel, no layers of history (the bad kind), no concern that things look "dirty". The place was spotless. And it's not as if there weren't people in there. Secondly, the service was fairly fast and the price was right. As in pretty cheap. As for the little bit of food we got, the onion rings we're sooooo good and the malts actually tasted like malts. Next time I'm anywhere near Freds, I will be making the trip in to try a burger and fixing. read more

Would have been three stars for the VERY standard burger and fries but we had to wait 30 minutes for food. Staff girls were chatting in front and I had to go ask to them to find out about the food. I love places like Fred's it's still there for a reason ! I'm disappointed I haven't found it sooner . There ( Cheeseburgers ) and ( onion rings ) are the best I've had in a few year's . The ( Tacos ) are Great extremely crunchy and the taco meat has Mama's taste to it . The Malts and shakes are awesome ; they actually know to put malt powder in the Malts !!! I drive 40 miles one way just to eat there . I usually go to United Supermarket there in Vernon also to get Meat and other staples . But back to Freds it's by Far the Best I've had in a long time . Very good old fashion hamburger. We always stop in Vernon to eat on our way back from the Texas Panhandle and this is the best place we have found. Prices are reasonable and the food is good. If you are coming through on Sunday they get very busy when church lets out. Will definitely be eating here again. read more

We stopped here while traveling through towards Amarillo. Really good, basic diner food! We got the chicken strip basket, grilled cheese, cheeseburger and tater tots. The chicken strip basket comes with big fat crinkle cut fries, toast, a generous serving of chicken strips and gravy! It was very tasty and the gravy was thick and peppery. My husband loved his grilled cheese and said its the best he's had in a long time! The cheeseburger was awesome! It was not very thick but still stayed juicy and the toppings were fresh! If you are missing your old Dairy Queen days and the hometown fresh cooked foods you grew up with then go to Fred's! They have been in the same location for, well I'm over 40 so longer than I've been alive. Great freshly made when you order delicious foods! This used to be a Dairy Queen. They have a similar menu but the food tasted a lot better than Dairy Queen. My husband had the steak sandwich (chicken fried) and said it was delicious. Let's be honest here...there really isn't all that much to eat in Vernon that isn't fast food & take out but after years of coming here for business & actually having to stay in town which doesn't happen very often, I took to yelp to see what was around besides the generics. I love looking for local places that I can't get at home or every other city in the state & came across Fred's. The person I was with feels the same way about locals so we checked it out. Granted in the day it actually Was a Dairy Queen & still holds that look inside with its own decor. Don't be fooled by the outside because what you get on the inside is what you're there for. The chili cheeseburger was said to be really good as was the steak fingers I had. It still feels like a Dairy Queen yet a more homey feel to me. Plenty of people came in enjoying the food. Would definitely come back again. Food may come out a little slower as it is made when you order so it's fresh & hot. The burgers were delicious, and the corn dogs my son had were fresh. The burger deal included a sundae that was good, too. The price was excellent, at under $17 for 3 people.
