Got burgers to go on New Year's Day. (Thanks for opening!!) The burgers here are some of the best I've tried in a very long time. Legitimately enormous, real-meat patties. My partner and I both ordered doubles, because we thought that with the price so reasonably low, the patties would be puny. Big mistake -- neither one of us could finish our deliciously giant burgers. The fries were also very good The counter staff were friendly, and the service was prompt. Loved it. read more

So glad we stopped here for lunch on our drive to Amarillo even though they only had a rated review of 3.9. The hamburgers were big and juicy with fresh ground beef patties. We ordered 2 double cheese burgers bc looking at the price we figured the patties would be thin...but no sir, they were thick patties that were as big or bigger than the buns. We also got the tater tots and they were cooked to a perfect crispy brown and not soggy like many burger places. We will definitely stop here again and highly recommend this little throw back to the 50's joint for any burger hungry folks! read more

As we were driving thru Vernon, this little place caught my eye on the Google Maps. So happy we stopped by for a quick lunch. The service was quick and pleasant. We had 2 cheeseburgers with fries and a drink. The burger was cooked great with great flavor. The fries had a seasoning on them to give a nice flavor. We ate there for under $20. Score! Nothing fancy, just an excellent simple hamburger. Each burger fresh and cooked to order. Double and single burger platter combined under $20. Great value. Seems to be where the locals go. It's about 1/2 mile off main road but definitely worth checking out. Will return on our next trip. read more

I really don't know why I keep hoping they do it right. Speaking from experience as I do stay in Vernon. You can order a BACON cheeseburger with mayo here 20 times and 1/20 it'll actually be prepared correctly. Other than that one time, they'll prepare it the way they want to. Fries are trash and their tots are soggy and covered in oil that taste like seafood. Just a great hole in the wall if you are looking to ruin your day and appetite. read more

One very odd place and experience. We stopped here on the way to Palo Duro Canyon for lunch. We were first going someplace else that was open, except it wasn't open. On to the second Yelp choice. It was a little confusing as it's location isn't exactly where the GPS indicates, but thanks to another yelper we found it. Walking in we were taken back to decades before. And not in a good way. Back when certain health or business laws were not enforced. It's cash or check only, and the price on the menu is what you pay. There was no tax on our bill. The posters around the place were creepy. They were supposed to be a throwback to the 50's, but they were like the reject ads. One for a grilled chicken sandwich looked like the meat was a piece of melted plastic. And the ad for a hot dog had me looking twice to see if those were veins on the hot dog. The child labor poster was more grease than poster, as was most of the place. Even the incredible number of flies seemed disappointed. Still, food needed to find the belly and a cheeseburger was ordered. I could hear the frozen piece of meat hitting the grill. In hindsight, Turtle pointed out it was probably a good thing it was actually frozen. The burger really didn't taste like anything, but the fries weren't bad. For me, I just can't see myself stopping here again. read more

While passing through town on a road trip, we were prompted by hunger pangs to find a likely lunch spot. We pulled over and consulted trusty Yelp to help find the best restaurant in Vernon. Well, that place turned out not to be open, so we consulted Yelp again for a nearby restaurant that would be pretty good. Vernon Burger turned out to be that place. We arrived a few minutes before the place opened, so we parked and watched a soccer mom load about 20 pans of Vernon Burger foods into her pickup. It seemed like a good sign, right? So as Soccer Mom finished up and the clock struck 11, we made for the door. My first impression was just that the place was tiny. About six stools at the bar, and maybe three booths. There was a drive-through window and an entry from behind the bar into a partly-visible kitchen. We took seats at the bar to save waitstaff the trouble of coming around and serving us and grabbed a couple of somewhat crumpled laminated menus. The offerings were a little confusing. Some burgers, some Asian food, and a few breakfast items. All prices were in whole dollar amounts. While we waited for someone to take our order, we started to take in our surroundings a bit. The place might have been tiny, but it held a surprising wealth of houseflies. They, like the waitstaff, appeared reclusive and sleepy, and didn't bother us as much as one might expect. Said waitstaff did make an appearance. I requested a sweet tea (out of character, as I almost exclusively choose water and/or beer), but wise Bear ordered a soda from the cooler. "Closed container," he explained later. I asked for a regular burger, and Bear chose his standard bacon cheeseburger. We were handed our drinks...Bear was given his closed container of soda along with a cup of ice, which he left untouched. While we waited for our "food," we observed the business operation, decor, and local populace. The decor was striking, and I do not mean that as a compliment. The place attempted a 50s diner vibe, an attempt that blessedly lasted only from the front door to the counter, because the attempt appeared to have been made by someone from Mars. From the counter from the back, the decor was more reminiscent of the movie Deliverance. Flies halfheartedly chased each other around the territorial boundaries of their light fixtures. Department of Labor regulatory posters on child labor laws languished on the walls, spattered with grease and their bottom edges tattered. Some kind of advertisement poster - faded in its decrepitude - peeked out from behind hand-drawn signs that had been taped over it so long ago that those, too, were faded and drooping. I mentioned earlier that we had a chance to observe the business practices. A few locals wandered in and/or drove through - and they were obviously locals - and each was charged a whole dollar amount for the order. Twenty dollars even. Five dollars even. This left us with a burning curiosity about how the establishment was handling its tax bill. We didn't ask, but we did wonder. And here, in the tenth paragraph of my review, I will finally purge myself of my memories of the the food. Friends, the burger made me long for McDonald's. This burger had an enormous bun, and a tiny patty. If I really concentrated, I could sort of imagine that I tasted something meatlike. It's almost like a little smear of meat juice on bread. The patty had definitely been purchased frozen, as part of a very large shipment of patties, and spent a long while in a freezer somewhere as the flavor of meat dissipated into the air. Bear pointed this out and I actually felt relieved by the prospect that the local houseflies had probably not had much opportunity to sample this meat. There were fries. Nothing special, nothing horrible, just fries. I like ketchup with my fries, and there was ketchup, but it was a bottle that was maybe one-third full and had separated into its elements. I'm sure the houseflies had had their chance to sample it, but I used it anyway. I like to live dangerously. On our return trip, we did not stop in Vernon, Texas. Not only would I not recommend stopping at Vernon Burger, but I would recommend against stopping anywhere in Vernon for any reason. I hope whatever party that Soccer Mom was hosting with all those pans of food didn't suffer any ill effects from it. read more

This review is going to sound bizarre, but I can't help it. We were told to try the fried rice here. My face looked like this: :| x a gazillion. Let me get this straight. You want me to go to the local BURGER JOINT to get Chinese? Yes. So, I went knowing that this would be one of THOSE experiences. You know, the ones where you want to leave a half star or less? I was more than pleasantly surprised. The fried rice was yummy. The egg rolls were good. They had a lot of filling and were crispy and fresh. But the real star of this show? The crack sauce. Okay so it's not crack but it might as well be. Well, if I knew crack but I don't. I digress. They give you a sauce that is clear. It is sweet with at touch of spicy. Poured over the fried rice really made that rice scrumptious. The place itself is an old diner that looks like, well, an old diner. It's one of those places you would probably drive right by. But don't. And when you do go in (or call in your order), get the fried rice. Don't forget the sauce or the egg rolls. A truly nice find on the less popular side of Vernon (unless it's the hot rod weekend.) read more

On our trip from Mansfield Texas to Amarillo,Texas, we decided to eat at all locally owned eating establishments along the way. We were in Vernon at lunch time. I found Vernon Burger and I am so glad I did. Another review recommended the fried rice and egg rolls, I didn't understand this was a burger joint. Well, it so much more than that. Down to the nitty gritty, my husband and I ordered the highly touted fried rice and egg rolls, they were wonderful. We also had the chicken finger basket, thin strips of chicken, golden crunchy, Delish! When in Vernon, this is a must stop, they have outdoor eating space (great for us we travel with our two small fur babies) and the inside is small, but a real 50's throwback. Wife and I tried calling in an order for 15 minutes decided to drive by to see if they were even open (cause they have weird hours) turns out they were open.
