Fred's has the best breakfast. It has a charming, contemporary vibe. You order at the register and they seat you at one of their tables. Seating is a bit limited and you might have to wait in line if going at peak times. We ordered the the Market Breakfast Plate and Breakfast Burrito sub meat for avocado. The spicy harissa sauce and herb labneh was so delicious and flavorful. The burrito had a spicy sauce that gave it a unique flavor. I loved how simple, yet creative their menu items were. Everything tasted so fresh. I enjoyed my carmel banana latte. They used Roos Roast beans, which is one of my favorites. The staff is incredibly kind. I can see this becoming a regular spot for me. Highly recommend checking it out.

Needed a Breakfast that was good, and refreshing. Fred's came up...Menu looked inviting...Instant Yes, when someone opened the door and Welcomed us in. ( let me add) the buildings south of the restaurant are vacant DON'T LET THAT STOP YOUR EXPERIENCE IMMEDIATELY: The Flowers on the tables the antique Glass Water dispenser setting, positive quotes on the walls will let You know good choice You order at the counter the Team was pleased to answer any questions. BTW Your Hot drinks are served in Real Cups/with handle not a Paper cup I was gonna share the Lox sandwich on sour dough bread. When I saw the huge size I said oh dear I should have. However I could not stop eating it. Kinda felt like I had found a bit of NYC city neighborhood restaurant on Gratiot in Detroit. Oh watch out for the meter persons

Fred's has quietly become our Sunday ritual after the gym and our new go to brunch spot. It is tucked into a row of newer shops off Gratiot by Eastern Market, with big front windows that flood the space with light. You order at the counter, grab a seat, and food just appears at your table. Service is consistently kind and the flow works really well. My usual is the Kale and Brussel Sprout Salad with grilled chicken (4.5/5). The dried cranberries, Parmesan, and light sweet vinaigrette hit that sweet/salty/tangy mix and play nicely with the chunky brussel sprouts and kale. The chicken can be a touch dry at times, but it is always well seasoned. The Egg Sandwich (4/5) is a very solid breakfast sandwich. The eggs are always cooked perfectly soft, and with avocado, cheddar, and mayo on a challah roll you are in rich, cozy territory. For my taste it could use a bit more texture, but the quality is there. The Hot Potato side eats like a full meal (4.5/5). Crisp potatoes with spicy mayo, garlic, and a blanket of shredded Tillamook cheddar. Hard not to finish the whole thing. The Crispy Brussel Sprouts (4/5) are another favorite. The portion is generous, the red wine vinaigrette is used lightly, and the labneh and green apple give brightness to what is basically deep fried sprouts. The only downside is the oil that gathers at the bottom, which is sort of the cost of doing business with fried brussel sprouts. The Market Breakfast Plate is the star for us (5/5). Perfectly cooked eggs, creamy labneh, spicy tomato harissa, fingerling potatoes, greens, and Zingerman's sourdough that is ideal for dragging through the harissa and yolk. It is the plate we keep coming back for, every single time. Shoutout to Earl for making some of the best eggs we have had in Detroit. If you are near Eastern Market and looking for brunch, Fred's is absolutely worth a stop.

Fantastic little place for brunch! The team here makes a great job anda a great meal. Top recommendation is the spicy chicken sandwich and the nova toast. Good coffee and good food. We did not try the smoothies but they seem to be very popular. The ambiance is independent, chic and easy going. Absolute recommendation and congrats to the place.

First meal of 2026 and it was at Fred's. This was the old Collect Beer spot if IIRC! I also have NO idea if this spot is related to the Fred's that used to be in Ann Arbor (RIP) but Detroit Fred -- I love you already. We had the following and I'm listing in order of MUST order - but honestly no misses for me - all so so delish and fresh! *444 Ever Glowing Smoothie (carrot, pineapple, ginger, turmeric, orange, collagen): 444 is an angel number but apparently the owner's wife also owns 444 pilates so there's a connection here with the naming here. This smoothie slapps. It's like the wellness shot we all know and love but make it tasty! *Breakfast Burrito (free range soft scrambled eggs, cheddar, barbacoa, chilaquiles, mango salsa & chipotle cream) - we made it a bowl and wowow, it's the way to go. So flavorful, the fingerling potatoes in it were so lovely and beautifully crispy. *Spicy chicken sandwich (chicken schnitzel, kale, cucumber, pickled red onion, cheddar & spicy mayo on zingerman's sourdough) - I LOVE this take on a spicy chicken sando, so unique! Liked the slight heat on the spicy mayo too. *Fred's Smash Burger (double patty smash burger, american cheese, bread & butter pickles, grilled onions & house burger sauce) - SOLID SOLID smash burger. so flavorful and perfectly cooked. *Mediterranean Salmon Bowl (grilled salmon, pearled couscous, herbed labneh, tomato, cucumber, pickled red onion, fresh dill) - I could eat this every single day for lunch if you let me. So tasty, well balanced - with the tangy labneh. Yum. I'll definitely be back to Fred's - the food is pretty remarkable and there's so much more to try. The acai bowl looked awesome. So did the ricotta toast (huge fresh berries!). Street parking!

Fred's and I go together real bad! Have dined in and dashed from Fred's...either way I have received food from here it never misses. Any of the food I have tried is delicious and are huge portions. Prices are incredibly fair and a great value for the quantity of food you receive. Looking forward to eating my way through the entire menu here and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu truly. Anything I've tried so far is delicious. The coffee is also great and dare I say some of the best I've had in the city. I'm a bit of a latte and cappuccino snob and they do a great job here. Although it's a bit of a smaller spot, the turnover is very quick. You order from a counter and your food is brought to you. The kitchen is speedy! Open for breakfast and lunch.

Fred's used to be one of my favorite brunch spots in Ann Arbor, and I was so heartbroken when it shut down. Not 100% sure if this is the same business but I was ecstatic to see this open up in Detroit and had to make my way over. My friend and I enjoyed their cappuccinos with a hint of their house made syrups - I had pistachio and she had maple cinnamon, and both were divine. This was the best coffee I've had in a while! The food, although took a while to come out, did not disappoint. I had the breakfast burrito turned into a bowl with yummy crispy potatoes and my friend enjoyed her market bowl. One of the owners popped by as well and was super friendly, as was all of the staff there! Can't wait to be back to try more of the menu here.

This is so far my top brunch spot of 2026. Right next to the Eastern Market area, it's in a fantastic location and you can find street parking in front pretty easily. It's a moderately sized space, but we were able to just walk in. I ordered the breakfast burrito as a bowl and the banana caramel latte. The latte itself was incredible, it really blew me away and I absolutely loved the flavor. The burrito bowl was also amazing, huge portions that I was not able to finish and so much flavor. Will definitely be returning soon and making this my go-to brunch destination. Cannot recommend enough!

I had brunch here this morning and had the absolute best experience! Located in Eastern Market, Fred's is a true gem. The owner is so friendly and really makes it feel like a community :) there is seating both downstairs and upstairs. We were seated upstairs and I loved the decor and colors. It reminded me of the Siren Hotel in Detroit. For drinks, we had the iced caramel banana latte which was delicious. I tried the market breakfast plate which was one of the most flavorful and filling breakfasts I've had in a long time. I loved the labneh and spicy harissa sauce that came with it. My sister had the chicken rice bowl which had great flavors. Overall I had the best experience and I will be back again soon :)

Fred's Café is such a lovely place for a delicious breakfast. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with warmth--Fred himself is incredibly welcoming and friendly, making you feel right at home. The food is absolutely fabulous, made with care and full of flavor. My kale salad was amazing--honestly, one of the best I've ever had. We'll definitely be coming back again and again!

Another wonderful breakfast at Fred's!! Enjoyed the Market Breakfast Plate - greens, very yummy and spicy tomato harissa, fingerling potatoes & zingermans sourdough. And, Avocado Toast - Avocado Toast avocado, free-range sunny side up eggs, pickled red onion, arugula & balsamic on zingermans sourdough. Sipped drip coffee with almond milk and vanilla flavor. What a way to start a Saturday!

This is the cutest new breakfast/lunch diner in the Eastern market area. A couple of outdoor tables are available and they have some seating inside as well. The look inside is simple and very clean cute vibe. All of the ingredients here are super fresh and high quality- literally have never seen a more perfect avocado on my bowl. I just wish they were open on Mondays but hopefully that will come in time!

I was searching for a Restaurant that Truly supports a GF person So many say they are yet ( pre read their menus and nada) This was a test visit for guests that ARE ABSOLUTELY GF. I called for a Reservation. Oops no same day Res, yet I was told there was one Res left for 12:30 ( if We didn't make it the wait would NOT be long. We were a bit late yet our table was waiting for Us... This is a cozy scratch kitchen restaurant with a Greenwich Village vibe. Table seating for 16 bar seating for 3 Yet it didn't feel crowded. We were asked if it was our 1st time? Yes. Menu was fully explained and even b4 I could ask I was told what was always prepared GF and for other dishes what could be substituted...I purposely chose the GF waffles. May I say AWESOME. I had 1 suggestion....add the Tart cherry crafted jam that came with my husband's biscuit as an additional add on with the syrup. with the waffles I blended syrup and jam and. Then my Latte. I asked for a Hot cup. It was creamy smooth. If You can't have dairy ( and they asked) there's options. I need not have worried; there was parking closer by. Oh well. The restaurant is tiny. And it maximizes the space by lining its walls with colorful bottles of wine, chic and cher containers of olive oil, and pots of artisanal honey hiding here and there. My friend pointed out the breathtakingly beautiful bouquet of dried flowers hanging over our table. I should have taken a photo when I had the chance. I started with the spiced brown sugar latte, made with oat milk. Delicious and sweeter than I thought. Even though the menu is small and curated, I could not decide between the nosh plate, the biscuit brekkie, or the quiche, which was the special of the day. So I ended up with the quiche but added the biscuit and bacon - I did not want to miss out. The crust of the quiche was fine, but the custard-like filling was divine, more like a savory crème brûlée or flan. Service was quick and efficient. Our reservation was made for one of the predefined 90-minute blocks, so the staff was on top of getting and delivering our meals and bussing tables as soon as they emptied to make room for the next group of guests.

Lauren took great care of us and encouraged us to order whatever we were craving. Dangerous advice, but we happily accepted . Warning - the ratings are real. They're not a mistake. We started with our usual cocktail, the Instant Karma (5/5). It is the perfect balance of citrus and salt with a light cucumber note. Clean, refreshing, and it pairs well with everything. The roasted sweet potato (6/5) is one of the best vegetable dishes in the city. The caramelized exterior gives way to a soft interior, and the crispy quinoa adds a subtle light crunch that plays against the creamy texture. The salsa macha brings a smoky, nutty depth without the heat, and the crema ties it all together. I had to physically stop myself from scraping the plate (actually they had to take it away ). The tagliatelle (5/5) with beef bolognese and parmesan was flawless. The pasta has that ideal handmade chew, and the bolognese is rich without being heavy. The parmesan blends perfectly into the sauce and stands out in every bite. The potato pierogi (10/5) were the star of the night. Soft potato-filled pillows with horseradish crema, apple, and crispy shallot pieces create this perfect sweet, tangy, creamy, and crunchy bite. Each forkful felt intentional and balanced. I felt guilty, because in my head, I didn't want to share with my wife, but I did anyways . The cruelty of having to split an odd number of pierogis...well played...we should have just ordered another one. We also ordered the smoked potatoes and the pan roasted half chicken with sauce au poivre (always 5/5 for both) The smoked potatoes, with raclette, and crème fraîche, are always a must. These winter variation was just as good! The chicken remains one of the most consistently well-executed mains in the city. I have tried recreating it at home with the cold pan method and it never comes close. Every time we dine here, it feels like four or five different dinner experiences in one evening. Selden Standard continues to set the bar for us in Detroit. We love the staff, the food, and the memories tied to this place. Cheers to many more amazing years to come!

My husband surprised me with a birthday dinner here, and I'm glad that we got to experience it. We arrived in advance of our reservation and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender brought us a glass of wine while we waited. It took about a half hour, but we were shown to our table for the night and promptly greeted by our server. All of the food looked amazing, both on the menu and with what people were ordering at other tables. We chose a variety of dishes - cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, squid ink orecchiette, octopus, mushrooms, and scallops. I would recommend all of them, but the standouts for me were the Brussels sprouts and the scallops. Flavors were unique and textures were especially on point with those dishes. Service was good, but we both felt like it was slow. There was a slight glitch in the beginning of the night where the host stand didn't mark that we had checked in when we actually had, which probably contributed to the half hour wait at the bar. Aside from those points, it was an impeccable night!

I normally do not like breakfast burritos since I find them really dry, but the eggs were moist and tender and ditto for the tortilla. I had the sausage, and it was diced and mixed in with the other ingredients, but it was more of a processed sausage (maybe chicken?) with a bouncy texture. Western Potatoes: This dish has diced red skin potatoes with thinly shredded cooked red onions and bell peppers. It has a coating of spice on it which made the ketchup unnecessary as it was already so flavorful. The inside was fluffy, but the outside had no crisp and was slightly oily. I know part of it was due to the fact that it was delivered, but I wasn't a fan still.  Veg Life Quiche: This was a good quiche. The egg were tender with the addition of buttermilk, and it was teeming with spinach, tomato, onion and topped with cheddar cheese. The crust was a standard crust.  This is a solid option for catering if you want to have a more unique place than the standard chain restaurants.
