We were a bit late yet our table was waiting for Us... This is a cozy scratch kitchen restaurant with a Greenwich Village vibe. Table seating for 16 bar seating for 3 Yet it didn't feel crowded. We were asked if it was our 1st time? Yes. Menu was fully explained and even b4 I could ask I was told what was always prepared GF and for other dishes what could be substituted...I purposely chose the GF waffles. May I say AWESOME. I had 1 suggestion....add the Tart cherry crafted jam that came with my husband's biscuit as an additional add on with the syrup. with the waffles I blended syrup and jam and. Then my Latte. I asked for a Hot cup. It was creamy smooth. If You can't have dairy ( and they asked) there's options. Of course, I arrived ridiculously early for our reservation since I always worry about parking. I parked farther away just to be assured of a spot. I need not have worried; there was parking closer by. Oh well. The restaurant is tiny. And it maximizes the space by lining its walls with colorful bottles of wine, chic and cher containers of olive oil, and pots of artisanal honey hiding here and there. My friend pointed out the breathtakingly beautiful bouquet of dried flowers hanging over our table. I should have taken a photo when I had the chance. I started with the spiced brown sugar latte, made with oat milk. Delicious and sweeter than I thought. Even though the menu is small and curated, I could not decide between the nosh plate, the biscuit brekkie, or the quiche, which was the special of the day. So I ended up with the quiche but added the biscuit and bacon - I did not want to miss out. The crust of the quiche was fine, but the custard-like filling was divine, more like a savory crème brûlée or flan. Service was quick and efficient. Our reservation was made for one of the predefined 90-minute blocks, so the staff was on top of getting and delivering our meals and bussing tables as soon as they emptied to make room for the next group of guests. read more

Came to Folk while visiting Detroit because many people had mentioned to me how great it was, and when I saw the menu has gluten free and vegan options I was sold. I did make reservations but there were open tables when we arrived at 1030, less so when we left. The restaurant is small, but it is very cozy with a great ambience. Service was super attentive and fast. We both just got drip coffee which was always kept full. I couldn't decide what to get because there were so many options for me and luckily the waiter helps me decide to get the frittata with the side of tempeh and the gluten-free waffle. I wasn't sure about the gluten-free waffle but man I am so glad I got it because it is the best gluten-free waffle I've ever had hands-down. Didn't even taste like it was gluten-free , and there was lots of cinnamon on it which I loved. It was absolutely delicious my friend got the vegan crunch wrap and really enjoyed it. Stayed in the corktown area of Detroit and found this place five minutes away from our Airbnb! So happy that when we walked there it was nice enough outside to have the option to sit outside! The interior was beautifully decorated and also seemed to have lots of merchandise on sale. The lady who we spoke to when we walked in came out to bring us menus and waters. We all grabbed some caffeine and I loved my miso caramel latte! Oatmilk is an option as well! We were told the biscuits are homemade which had me scouring the menu to get something with a biscuit! I tried the Biscuit Brekky and got bacon as a protein. Besides the homemade biscuit, it also came with an egg frittata and a salad. The bacon was really thick and I loved the flavor. I devoured this entire dish! The whole thing felt incredibly balanced with veggies, proteins, carbs, and fats. Really wish I knew what dressing was in the salad because it was refreshing! The bills came out automatically with a service charge for the tip which we were told about. You could pay the normal way with cash/card but they did have the QR code option as well which we all did. This was a really great stop for brunch and I'd be happy to eat here again! Truly hit the spot and get me satisfied the whole way back to the west side of the state. Went to Folk for the first time last Sunday and I was blown away by the flavors and perfection of their food. Perfect balance of textures, citrus, salt, and protein. The service was great as well. My only complain is that the gluten free sandwich bread is WAY too small compared to the regular bread. I think you should get three slices for the whitefish open face sandwich. Yummy! My hubby and I came maybe a few years ago and enjoyed our meal then so we came back today since we were in the neighborhood. Based on the reviews, I decided to get the Vegan Crunch Wrap (So good!) & my hubby got the (regular) Crunch Wrap which he absolutely loved! The salsa verde is soo delicious (pretty good spice level, like a medium!). Yes, it does have a nice crunch (from the crispy tostada inside;) We were able to sit inside (maybe 7-8 small tables in their small indoor space). Returning to Folk on a weekend day morning and they are remain just as good. It was much quieter, and easier to grab a table in the very small restaurant. The space is cosy and bright, shelves with wine and books, big windows letting in light. The service is friendly and quick. They do offer wine and breakfast booze. I had a great coffee, my friend enjoyed her mimosa. We each had one of the basic breakfasts, each comes with a side of fresh greens. The thick cut bacon is fantastic as is the biscuit. If I had a complaint, the jam was very thin, the taste was great, but you could not spread it, we ended up dipping. The prices have gone up since my last visit, which they noted. I have been to Folk a couple times and this was my first time dining in. I usually just get a latte - and I will say I super appreciate their baristas and all the fun syrup flavors on their menu. The miso caramel is to die for -- it is the ideal balance of sweet, salty, and umami that perfectly balances out the espresso bitterness. I love the vibes inside, it is truly a community hub and has so many locally sourced goods, there is so much to choose from. The space is small so finding a table can be difficult. I got a breakfast wrap and as you can see it was very full and loaded, but I wish there was some more sauce as it was dry. I just didn't find it to be something super special especially for the price. All in all, I would be curious to try something else from their menu as I feel like there are so many redeeming qualities for folk. read more

Stopped at Folk on the way out of Detroit based on gluten free availability. The shop is super small and can seat maybe 15 or so people inside, and outside there are a few tables if it's nice enough out. We did want to dine in but there was over an hour wait on a Saturday morning. I did a to go order with an espresso based drink (large) and breakfast sandwich. It was rather pricey - about $35 after all the upgrades, BUT it was the best dang gluten free breakfast sandwich I've ever had. It was on gluten free bread with shaved ham and egg with a dipping sauce. I'm glad I don't live close to Folk because this would be an expensive sandwich to get often, but for a special treat I definitely recommend. Fresh, intimate, and progressive. The menu is seasonally inspired and gives one a lot to think about when selecting. The idea of the crunch wrap smote me. I mean, frittata, tostada, spicy jack, chipotle aioli, and salsa verde sound like a resounding YUM, and I guarantee that it was! I paired it with a masala chai. I should note that I modified the Crunch Wrap to be vegan. I appreciate their intentionality with their menu, pairing their food items with drink items so you can craft and enjoy a gastronomic experience! This spot is small, but absolutely beautiful. It's worth doing an early brunch with a reservation. I would not attempt to eat here on the weekends without one. I also think it's important to note that the inside (in my opinion) would not be comfortable for larger people for people with mobility aids. Especially when it's busy and people are in line to order. I got the BLT and a blueberry latte. Both were so good! The aioli on the BLT was so 10/10. Was extremely disappointed in the experience had here. Having never been before I had no idea of what their process was to place an order or anything so my sister-in-law and I stood around for a moment before being acknowledged yet spoken to as if we knew what to do. Even after explaining it was our first time, the staffer didn't soften or apologize for the presumption. We reluctantly ordered beverages and stepped back outside to wait for them. A different staff person who observed our interaction came out and offered an apology while cleaning a recently vacated table. My order was received and my brother even went in, ordered and received his order. My sister-in-law eventually went back inside to find her drink order had been prepared and was just sitting in there. Needless to say I have no desire to return here. It felt intentional to set the ambiance from the moment you walk up. I sat at the bar because I dined solo and everything i observed was super clean and notably aligned with their values (highlighted goods for sale from woman owned businesses). My coffee was presented on a small serving plate and the flatware was beautiful - again, intentional. I enjoyed the waffle and it was brought out so fast and it was perfect. Light but also crispy and delicious. My entire dining experience was about :30 minutes which was much faster than I anticipated on a busy Sunday morning. They include a hospitality percentage at checkout and it appears it's a tip share model to provide balanced wages for the entire staff. A friend recommended this spot and I couldn't really wrap my head around the concept when looking at the website, so it wasn't super high on my list. That was silly and I'm so glad we ended up there sort of randomly after searching for a spot near Mink, where we were going later on that afternoon. Seating inside is very limited, but luckily it wasn't busy yet and we were able to grab a cozy table near the window. Folk is a cafe + market concept that feels very big-city. I don't think I've ever been to a spot quite like this before. Our main focus was breakfast, so I ordered the miso caramel latte and kimchi melt with bacon, and Nate got a French press and the crunch wrap. The owner took our order and was very kind and helpful. It was fun to browse the market area of the shop while we waited. They stock unique and interesting gourmet products and ingredients from diverse providers. Each item had a placard indicating if the business is LGBTQIA owned, female owned, APPI owned, immigrant owned, Detroit based, etc. I really enjoy supporting these types of businesses, so this was great to see. We ended up getting some holiday gifts, like salmon chips and Momofuku chili oil. They also had tea, coffee, chocolate, cookbooks, olive oil, spices, candles, fancy salts, and more. I love cooking and food in general, so this was right up my alley. I always love when places have items I've never seen anywhere else as I tend to visit these specialty/gourmet shops whenever I can. Our food was brought out and it was presented nicely. The kimchi melt was gooey and delicious. I liked that the kimchi had a kick to it! It was pretty messy to eat but we were given the perfect amount of napkins. I do wish it maybe had a little more cheese, and next time I wouldn't spring for the bacon - it didn't need it. NOTE: there is not a parking lot! I came here on a Sunday morning, and found this establishment to be cute but small. Small to the point you must be elbow to elbow with other customers!! Perhaps this was because I came at a busy time, but just know, you should expect to be in VERY close quarters during brunch time on weekends. If you're willing to put up with this very packed restaurant, this food was pretty darn good. I ordered their breakfast crunchwrap, it came with a small salsa, and it was delicious! This is the kind of restaurant where you order at the counter however they did still bring the food to our table. Had such a lovely brunch at Folk. I love that it's in Corktown but off the main road so it's quiet and not overly crowded. I made a reservation online and reservations are for 90 minutes. The staff was so friendly and welcoming. The space is small but cozy and creatively set up so it doesn't feel cramped. We ordered some mimosas, their daily pastry which was a chai coffee cake, and a chai latte for me! For our meals I got their farmers plate but instead of ham I asked for smoked tempeh which was done without an issue. My husband got their daily specials which was a waffle egg Sammie with smoked tempeh. We loved the food and loved that so many items come vegetarian or can be made vegetarian and even vegan. Yum! A great place for vegetarians - the menu is very veggie forward, though there are options to add meat. I ordered the bahn mi - I actually thought it was vegan, but apparently not due to the aioli - it was delicious! The textures were perfect and the mushroom spread on top is divine. Perfect bread, so yummy. Mom had the roasted asparagus melt which was also fantastic and a little different. Everything was so fresh and yummy and all the food going by us looked amazing as well. Love love Folk!! This is such a gem in Corktown. First off, the staff is incredibly kind and welcoming here. I love the community feel and how many local businesses they support with the different adorable products on display. Just rise the price of your menu and note that yall pay a living wage. I support a living wage, I prefer it. I got the weekend special quiche -cheddar and chive. The price I was charged was different than the menu listed price. It was $1, so I kept it moving, it was busy and I'm not a AH. The quiche came with a side salad. Everything looked beautiful, but the SALT. All I tasted on the food was salt. Salad dressing included. It was an impressive level of saltiness that drowned out what were lovey flavors of the food.Everything was fresh and looked beautiful and the crust on the quiche was perfect, but the SALT. For 28 -including an iced tea - I expected better food. Next time I'll stick with what I know to be good, the waffle and jammy egg - which are delicious. Also. Even for carry out, it was about a 25 minute wait - which given that it was a brunch rush isn't unreasonable, but just plan for the time. People do like to look around in the space. I ordered the vegan crunch wrap and a cold brew coffee. Coffee was good and the Crunchwrap was bomb.com (yes, I'm a millennial). It is a bit spicy, so I would not recommend if you do not enjoy spicy food. Lots of wine, beer, and N/A begs to choose from. They have pastries and the two times I have been they did not have vegan options for sweets. There was a bit of a wait for food (30 minutes), but they were quite busy. *COVID19 Edition* Why haven't I heard of/eaten at this place before? This being one of the first nicer days of spring, we wanted to get some brunch somewhere with outdoor seating. Folk's reviews quickly caught my attention. When we got there, we ordered from the window outside and found ourselves a table. The staff was all properly masked, and they took extra care to sanitize the tables after customers had left. I was so impressed with the Cafe Miel (Cinnamon honey latte). I was concerned that it would be too sweet, but honestly, it was just perfect and hit the spot. My waffle breakfast sandwich was amazing, and I enjoyed every single bite. It was a bit heavier though, and I couldn't possibly finish it all in one sitting. We also ordered the pastrami sandwich and that was incredibly tasty as well. Overall, this place blew us away, and I left incredibly happy. The only thing I would add was that the price was a bit high. We did scratch our heads a bit at a $45 breakfast, but we also noticed that there was no tipping, and 18% gratuity had already been added. Just something to be aware of. read more
