*COVID19 Edition* Why haven't I heard of/eaten at this place before? This being one of the first nicer days of spring, we wanted to get some brunch somewhere with outdoor seating. Folk's reviews quickly caught my attention. When we got there, we ordered from the window outside and found ourselves a table. The staff was all properly masked, and they took extra care to sanitize the tables after customers had left. I was so impressed with the Cafe Miel (Cinnamon honey latte). I was concerned that it would be too sweet, but honestly, it was just perfect and hit the spot. My waffle breakfast sandwich was amazing, and I enjoyed every single bite. It was a bit heavier though, and I couldn't possibly finish it all in one sitting. We also ordered the pastrami sandwich and that was incredibly tasty as well. Overall, this place blew us away, and I left incredibly happy. The only thing I would add was that the price was a bit high. We did scratch our heads a bit at a $45 breakfast, but we also noticed that there was no tipping, and 18% gratuity had already been added. Just something to be aware of. read more

Stumbled on this place one Monday morning and I think I found my new favorite breakfast place. This is a tiny place with a hipster vibe that is both a cafe and market. Only 8 tables inside but has outdoor seating as well. When I walked in, I was on the only customer but by the time I left, the place was half full and we were all talking because it was our first time there and the menu was so creative. The only people who are not in on the group conversation was a hipster couple that sat in the corner by themselves. If it is your first time here, it can be confusing. Mostly because the menu is so creative and requires explanation. The staff was extremely patient and friendly. The coffee is really good. I ordered the crunch wrap with a side of bacon. The bacon is thick cut and crispy. The crunch wrap is absolutely delightful. Comes with a side of salsa Verde, and although I typically don't like it, this was spot on. I can't wait to come back and try other things on the menu. read more

My first beef with this place is that they are quite expensive for what you get. In retrospect I feel I was ripped off on the tempeh waffle sandwich for $16, it's essentially carby wheat based cardboard sponge between two smashed and mushy waffles. My husband thought his BLT wasn't bad but not worth $12. It's a store and cafe combined. No dine-in available any longer. Window on Bagley Street to order food. Patio out front for dining for walk up after ordering. They give you your drinks after ordering, food is brought out to the table. Patrons are requested to clean up after eating. They make their own strawberry pop tart. They sell actual popsicles too. We ordered a lemon ginger drought juice $7.98, veggie frittata waffle sandwich with tempeh bacon, BLT, house dip and sweet potato crackers, and seasonal salad. The BLT was good. The tempeh frittata waffle was okay. Just a slight taste of the maple syrup. It was super bland and required some of their house made hot sauce to get it down. The seasonal salad is fresh and so-so, the dressing is thick and has some decent flavor to it. The house dip comes premade, cold and the potato crackers are bagged and not freshly made at all. The breakfast is killer. The coffee is outstanding. I live 3 miles away but every morning, I seriously consider driving the 3 miles for an Americano. Thats not even what I normally drink. Detroit is in the midst of a housing, restaurant and cultural resurgence and I was excited to get in early on the action. I'd researched and complied a list of restaurants prior to my trip. After landing in Detroit my hotel room wasn't ready for check-in. I left my luggage with the bellhop and beelined straight to Folk. Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. Walking in the floral display hanging from the ceiling immediately caught my eye. It's a nice centerpiece for the restaurant and a work of art. It's a small restaurant probably seating fewer than 20 when at capacity. This was a Thursday morning, so it wasn't busy and had plenty of open seating. We were told to grab a seat wherever we'd like. It was a bright sunny day despite being a little chilly outside. We walked toward a small 4 seater blanketed by sunlight. The waitress quickly said the table was for groups of four. Ok, I guess. ..the place has 5 customers. We surely could've sat without incident. We started with the Mexican Chocolate & a Caramel Coffee. At $6 each I was expecting much more than watery cups of coffee. We added cream, but that didn't help. It was two of us, but we ordered three entrees. .. another reason we could've sat at the table. After doubling checking Yelp pics we shared the House Waffle, Warm Rice Bowl and the Ham & Cheese Croissant. The waffle is pleasing to the eye, but bone dry. I prefer crispy waffles, but the blueberry citrus butter couldn't salvage the texture. I flagged the waitress down to let her know we didn't like the waffle. We'd literally didn't finish a single square, having only a single bite each. She took the waffle away, but left it on bill :-! The sandwich was served refrigerator cold. Who wants a cold Ham & Cheese Croissant?? I asked the waitress if she could warm it up and she looked as if that was an outrageous request. She advised they have a small kitchen and don't have a way to warm. I'm happy they don't have microwaves because they have no place in a kitchen, however I would've been satisfied with them warming it in a hot pan. The only saving grace was the Warm Rice Bowl. Nice flavor and satisfying . The poached egg was prepared perfectly and melded with the other ingredients to make a sauce. I can't say that I'll ever have it again though, lol. I was completely turned off by the service and the way the bill was handled. I'm all for proper wages for restaurant staff, but don't impose a mandatory 20% tip if your staff isn't trained to deliver that level of service. read more

Went to brunch with a friend this morning and it was my first time at Folk! I will be back. The restaurant is small but beautifully decorated. I love that a ton of their condiments, syrups, etc are made in house! I got the vegan crunch wrap and my friend had the regular crunch wrap. Both were fantastic and their salsa verde on the side was so yummy! The drinks are also tasty. All of the staff were helpful in answering questions and very pleasant! read more

I enjoyed an occasional brunch at Folk pre-pandemic and thought it was a nice little spot. But in this bizarre-o pandemic present time that we are all living through, I have been nothing but impressed by Folk's updates and pivots (this is still a basketball term to me, but I guess it's the accepted verbiage for keeping your business operational during a global crisis). Safety for both customers and staff is obviously one of their top priorities. I love that I can shop online and pick up curbside - and that they continued this service all throughout summer, even when covid numbers were down. The grocery selection rotates with the season, and it covers a lot of basics as well as specialty goods that are hard to find at local shops. Locally foraged ramps, wild mushrooms, in-season fruit and veg - they nailed it. Also a huge fan of their take-and-bakes for a special weekend treat. And now that the espresso drinks are back, I find myself stopping by more frequently, because coffee and groceries and a delightful pastry is my kind of one-stop shop. read more

One of my favorite breakfast/lunches in the city. Each visit has been better than the last! Highlights? The avocado toast with the beet hummus is to die for. Add an egg and you'll go straight to heaven! Speaking of eggs, the seasonal quiche is aces. When I was here last it was a spring pea and goat cheese quiche and wow wow! SO delicious. Also, the yogurt bowl? GET OUT OF HERE IT'S SO GOOD. Orange vanilla yogurt, pink grapefruit, hazelnut granola, rhuberry compote & crushed pistachio? You'll weep with joy. Everything else about Folk is pitch perfect. I LOVE this place! And I especially love the juice shots that are available with gin or Valentine vodka if you choose! We tried the Beet Treat, which is delicious on its own, but extra fun with vodka and only a few dollars more. The pumpkin oatmeal is wonderful and I ordered two sides and put them together: the congee grits ($3) and the tempeh bacon ($3) ! The congee is so rich and deep, you won't need anything else. The very best thing about Folk is that they promote a living wage, so 18% gratuity is already added into your bill. I kinda wish it was an even 20%.. I won't leave less than 20 unless something real bad has happened, so I had to figure out what to add on here.. worked out to be an added dollar, which seemed silly but I couldn't live with the 18, lol. Delightful breakfast place! First, the surroundings are beautiful - I was seated in a sunny nook by the window, and felt like I was in an artsy cafe in a European capital. Second, they have really creative breakfast offerings. I tried the Plain Waffle with a side of bacon. Initially, I wasn't sure about the almond flour. I'm not gluten free, but waffles sounded good. These waffles had a sturdier texture than their glutenny cousins, with a very crisp texture. I couldn't detect any almond flavor, which surprised me. The pistachios and maple syrup added a nice sweet-salty yin yang to the dish. I liked the bacon. It was thick cut, smoky, and delicious. I'm already looking forward to return to Detroit based on Folk alone. It was my favorite breakfast I've had in a while and I NEED to come back to try the lunch. I'll try just about any food, but it's rare that I want to order every single thing off a menu. Seriously -- I was thrilled with every combination of ingredients on Folk's menu and wanted to try one of everything. I settled on the hash plate and then we all shared the yogurt bowl. The hash plate had well-cooked potatoes and sweet potatoes as the base, spinach salad on the side, and a fried egg and sliced avocado on top. Pop a little sriracha over the top and bam - the perfect breakfast. The yogurt bowl really stole the show. Edible flowers and hazelnut granola sprinkled the top and it looked like a piece of art. There was blackberry compote on the side, fresh grapefruit slices (didn't even realize I liked grapefruit until this meal), and delicious granola. It was AMAZING. You have to order this unassuming dish. The interior of Folk is every photographer, design-fanatic, and plant-lover's dream. We got to sit in a round table surrounded by windows and it was the perfect way to start the day. Excited to try the lunch bowls when I return! read more

This cute little bodega style café is just a short walk from where we were staying in Corktown. I didn't get through looking at the menu much because I was distracted by the farmers breakfast sandwich, the very first thing on the menu, of course. While they were cooking our food, you were able to drink your coffee on the patio, or look through the provisions that they had inside, an awesome corner market for any knickknacks or wine for a special occasion or gift. I'm giving four stars because for $11, our breakfast sandwich could have given more, I would recommend some kind of greenery, preferably arugula on the breakfast sandwich, bacon as well. The woman that was taking our order seemed like she did not want to be at work that day, and kept rolling her eyes. I felt like a burden while ordering my breakfast sandwich. Otherwise a beautiful day and a cute corner shop, I would return if I had guests in town and wanted to do something special for them. read more

Walked up on this gem for breakfast while home gazing in the neighborhood. It's a cute spot, very small but has great outside seating. The music was a whole vibe. The menu is short but it was good. I had the smoked salmon with a frittata and mixed greens and biscuit with homemade preserves. I like how it's set you. I came here as the restaurant at the Godfrey had just switched over to lunch service and was not able to accommodate us for breakfast. Am I so glad they did. I had the frittata, biscuit and bacon.This was one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. The food was tasty and fresh. Staff was very friendly and attentive; a great neighborhood spot. Listen, anyone who reads the nonsense I write knows that I am not one to give out 5* reviews willy nilly period let alone on my first visit. Anyhoo... tucked away one block off the main strip in Corktown (Michigan Ave) and across from Lady of the House is the addendum the Farmers Hand Market known as FOLK. It is very tiny, and the other couple of times I've tried to come here there was quite the wait, so I think it is fair to say that on most occasions you will have to. Luckily today was not one of those occasions. We were seated nearly immediately on the patio. As opposed to the traditional order of coffee we both decided to try a more complex drink. My friend ordered a Caramel Latte and I ordered the Coronado. Whoa whoa whoa... What's that you say? Well let me tell you. It's basically espresso and milk at 50% ratios. No really, that's it. Stunningly simply and yet gorgeously delicious. Now on to the two dishes. First the Aussie meat pie. Wow. The crust was perfectly baked, and the filling was so warm and such perfect comfort food. Do you like flavors? Do you? Then my goodness order this ASAP. I have never eaten a dish that screamed autumn comfort than this. Not to be out done, the curry bowl was a 99.9% to the meat pie's 100%. I am always curious when Americans make curry, and usually I can pick up on the differences, but this was was so well done and filled with flavor it was full on authentic for me. Ordered the Vegetarian Bahn Mi and my friend have the Biscuit Brekky! We both thought the meal was very good. I loved the products around the store/diner. I would agree with Annette J. This place is an amazing brunch spot in the D. I had the pastrami sandwich, and it was absolutely top notch. A few years back, I was on a mission to find the best Reuben and had a LOT of corned beef and pastrami. During that time, I ran across a lot of delicious renditions of the Reuben - and this one was a TOP contender. The sweet pickles, kraut, and horseradish really made this baby pop. If I could travel time back to the moment I started to eat this baby, I totally would... after I have Hitler killed, of course. Oh, and the winter salad was damn tasty too (and I don't even really care for spinach or kale.) The service is perfection, the community seating and small ambiance make it for me - but if that's not your thing, that's okay... just more room for me! We parked down the side street without issue, and just had an overall spectacular morning. If I lived near here, this is where my money would go every single weekend. read more

Because of covid, the cute sit down cafe is no more. Instead it's a grab and go situation, or they had one of the seasonal igloos outside to sit in. We decided to try Folk after several previous attempts since the place was finally not busy. Place is cool looking, though I'm not a fan of communal seating but I get why here, it's very compact. The food was...ok. My scrambled eggs were awesome; fluffy and light and the side salad w/ vinaigrette was very good, but the vegetable hash was very bland to me. My grits were just ok, but that is because my preference is for grits that aren't as runny as these are. My companion got the quiche and while good, it was on the small side. My biggest gripe was the 18% included gratuity. It's not that I mind paying it, but I would like to be informed and made aware of the policy first - not many restaurants around here do this for two people so it's not like it's the norm and to be expected. Yes, I know it's on the bill, but I didn't notice right away and ended up giving a regular tip on top of the gratuity. I know it's my own fault, but it just felt shady. Regardless, it is a cute place, but the food wasn't enough to overcome the (figuratively) bad taste in my mouth, so we probably won't be back. read more

Very disappointing. Sorry to plagiarize a previous review, but the "...cross millennial counter boy..." was not a very good first impression. This is not the same restaurant compared to when it was run by the previous owner. To start there was no sign at the front door indicating where to order. When asked how to order they were very condescending telling us to order at the window. We asked if the eggs were pasture raised and the cross millennial had no idea what we were talking about - "no it's whatever is on the menu". I had the waffle egg sandwich and as you can see from the picture the egg was borderline burned. To add insult to injury, we spent about $25 fir breakfast and I asked for water and I was told they charge for. I usually give restaurants a second chance. They gave me no reason to think my next trip will be any better. Will never go back. read more

Folk was something of a pleasant surprise for my wife and me. It's a small, corner building with walk-up food service; seating is outside and there is a market/store and restroom inside. The immediate neighborhood Folk is in (Corktown) is lovely, with a rather unique, laid-back vibe. Parking and seating are both limited, so be aware in advance you may need to park down the street and/or take your food to go if your timing coincides with a rush of customers. Food was decently yummy: I had the quiche of the day (cooked with asparagus inside today) and my wife had the egg sandwich with bacon added. No complaints! We both enjoyed the meal. Service -- especially ordering, if there are a couple people ahead of you -- is seriously slow (thus the cutting of a single star). If you're not in a rush, though, this is a neat little place. read more

Found this lovely little market cafe in Corktown. I was very excited that there were vegan options. The young man who assisted me with my order was very friendly and helpful. They have a promotional vegan sandwich called 'Cade Stack' that is so delicious! It has vegan sausage and bean base egg, on toasted bread. They also have a few vegan option cakes that I plan to try and a market with lots of condiments, wines and many other things. I will definitely be going back! read more

Mediocre, disappointing food and overpriced. But the experience and lack of customer service is what made it so regrettable. Staff came off as arrogant and cold, and unhelpful. They add an automatic 20% gratuity but you need to order at the counter and we had to get up multiple times to go ask for things (butter, silverware, more water, etc) - no one checks on you - they were far too busy talking with one another behind the counter to bother with customers. read more
