Bazil's is known for having one of the biggest craft beer selections on College Avenue, and it's easy to see why people make this place a destination. Whether you already know exactly what you want or you're standing there thinking, "Okay...what the hell am I drinking today?" there's plenty to explore. But what I appreciate most is that they don't overcomplicate things. Good basic pub food. Cold beer. Comfortable surroundings. No need to dress it up with a paragraph of adjectives and culinary buzzwords. I went with the burger and fries, and it was exactly what I wanted from an old-school neighborhood pub: simple, satisfying comfort food that pairs perfectly with a cold beer. And then there's the fish tank. Seriously. That thing deserves its own Yelp review. There's something ridiculously relaxing about sitting at the bar, having a cold beer in front of you and watching the fish cruise around behind the glass. The staff were friendly, helpful, and quick with the libations! Kind of that "keep it real" attitude, but not in the rude way... in the honest and up front way! There is no food to speak of, save for a Chex-pub mix blend, but the drinks are why you want to visit! The famous Dirty Snowball is like a shake, but without ice cream, made with cocoa and related liqueur flavors (I can't remember what-all is in it, but it's GOOOOOOOD!). I highly recommend it! I also tried the Cleo's Trio, which is one part Dirty Snowball, one part Brandy Old Fashioned, and one part Suffering Bastard, I think? Not in the same glass! But, more like a flight. You get a little taste of Wisconsin or at least Appleton. Each drink is basically a full version, though, so you might need only one! I don't know what your favorite bar looks like, but if I lived in Appleton, this one would be mine. I would be in there at least once a week, if for no other reason the ambiance and the company. Great people, great drinks, and a legacy for holiday décor that I hope lives on forever!

The faint sound of the nearby waterfall added a serene touch, making the setting a standout feature. Unfortunately, the food and service fell far short, detracting from the otherwise impressive environment. Had reservations to meet friends for supper. We had to adjust our time, and the restaurant was very accommodating. The view is very nice. I can only imagine what it would look like in different seasons. The inside is rustic, and unique. Quite interesting how they turned a hydroelectric power plant into this restaurant. Service was quick, and very prompt and regular. We ordered the crunch tenders for an appetizer, which are chicken tenders. I have no idea how or what is in the breading, but they were amazing. I think they tried doing that with the creme fraiche on top but it didn't work. Entrees- I had the lobster cobb salad and my partner had the lobster rolls. The lobster rolls were super tiny so they were still hungry when they left and there wasn't much flavor or filling. The french fries were decent, probably the best part of the meal. The lobster cobb salad was so bland. Whatever dressing they had on the lettuce tasted of just avocado, which doesn't have a lot of flavor. The lobster itself was sweet in flavor but the cooking of it felt off, it was stringy? I ended up leaving most of the salad on my plate. I'm thinking we just ordered the wrong items off of the menu based off of other reviews. But it's quite a long drive for us to come here so I can't see us going out of our way to come back.

Thankfully, we had a reservation for two seats at the high-top bar directly in front of the open kitchen and service line, which gave us a front-row view of the chefs and dishes heading out to the dining room. More on those seats later. The restaurant itself is modern, stylish, and upscale without feeling pretentious. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout the evening. For drinks, I ordered a Lion's Tail beer while my wife enjoyed a prosecco. We started with two appetizers: the Country Pâté for me and the Wisconsin Cheese Plate for my wife. Both were served with pickled vegetables, including cucumbers and red onions, and both were excellent. The portions were surprisingly generous and, in hindsight, we probably could have shared just one appetizer and been perfectly happy. One of the highlights of the evening was watching the kitchen in action. Despite a packed dining room and the added chaos of Thursday burger night, the chefs took time to chat with us and were incredibly kind and hospitable. The chef-owner, who was working directly in front of us, recommended the Roasted Trout, while my wife chose the Roasted Beets. The trout was beautifully cooked. The skin was left on and crisped to perfection, pairing wonderfully with the spaetzle. My only criticism is that it was noticeably oversalted. It wasn't enough to ruin the dish, but it did have me reaching for my water glass more often than I'd have liked. A few bites from my wife's beet dish provided a nice balance, as it was light, fresh, and flavorful. By the end of the meal, we were far too full for dessert, so we settled our tab and prepared to leave. Now, back to those high-top bar seats. The chairs are very tall. I'm six feet tall and still had to hoist myself up into mine. My wife, who is five feet tall, practically had to climb aboard. The view is fantastic, but after an hour and a half, a couple of drinks, and a great meal, it's easy to forget just how far off the ground you are. As I got up to leave, I nearly lost my footing and almost tumbled out of my chair. Unfortunately, my wife wasn't as lucky. She fell backward, hitting her head on the concrete floor and bruising her leg and forearm as she tried to break her fall. Thankfully, she was okay and didn't need medical attention, but she ended up with a sizable bump on her head and some impressive bruises. So, a word of caution: if you're seated at the high-top bar, be aware of the height. The food, service, and atmosphere were excellent, but those chairs are not for the faint of heart. Consider bringing a parachute. Would definitely return, though perhaps next time we'll request a table closer to ground level.

Five stars for Marcus. One star for the kitchen. If those two teams ever get on the same page, this place could be excellent. **Update:** I want to give credit where it's due. After my wife posted her review on Google, the owner responded very thoughtfully and acknowledged that our table clearly did not receive the attention it should have. We never asked for a refund, and I wasn't expecting anything, but the restaurant refunded the bill and made sure our waiter was still compensated. That doesn't change the fact that the food and drinks that night were really disappointing, but it does say something positive about the ownership. Mistakes happen, rough nights happen, and I appreciate a business that takes responsibility instead of getting defensive. Marcus was excellent, and the owner's response was classy. I hope our visit really was just a bad night, because the way they handled it afterward deserves credit.

I ordered the salmon with French fries. The French fries tasted like they were under a heat lamp for 24 hours. My husband had the prime rib and he said it was good. I had a spicy margarita that wasn't great as well. This place has the potential to be amazing. It definitely fell short of expectations.
