first time coming to this place and i was mortified by their awful customer service. i walked in, started to place an order for 3 slices and before i could tell the employee behind the counter which slices he took a phone order. when i was finally able to tell him which slices he proceeded to tell me that he had just sold one of the slices i wanted. i asked him if it was for the phone order he took, even though i was there first, he said yes and he made no attempts to apologize or to try and salvage my business that he literally just lost. hope that one slice was worth the sell because i will never attempt to do business here again. read more

So its Sunday Funday and the first set of games are over and were are all hungry. As usual we can't all decide on a place to go so I suggest that we try out Franky's down the street cause it looked like it had a fairly large menu. As it turns out the menu was large but the food was just ok. We got a couple of different things including the hotdog special, gyro special, chicken parm sammie, and the philly cheese steak. The hotdogs were good and so was the gyro. The tzatziki was nice with a good garlic kick. On the downside the chicken parm was mostly bread and was just missing flavor and the philly was a bit on the dry side. On a side note the cheese side for the fries didn't taste like anything....kinda strange. So not bad but not good. I guess the pizza is supposed to be good but I don't know if I have bring myself to order a pizza from a hotdog joint. All the toppings you want on your pizza (18inch)it is for the same price ($15.50) except extra cheese($1.50) more but heck for the price of $17.00 for dinner on a Sunday night for our family it was well worth going to Franky's! Franky's Red Hots is a small eatery with a wide variety of menu items located off of Lake Street in Addison. The inside is clean, there's a fair amount of seating, and parking available. In visiting Franky's I decided to try the hot dog with everything. The hot dog came on a soft non-poppy seed bun. The pickle included was nicely thinly cut and had a nice flavor to it. The sport peppers on the dog weren't too hot and were a great compliment to overall flavor. The hot dog itself was skinless but was properly steamed and had a very good flavor to it. The mustard, relish and onion were all good and were evenly applied and had just the right amount of each to have the proper flavor balance. The tomato slices were thin and while not covering the whole dog were spread out enough to get tomato in every bite. Below the hot dog was a small helping of fries, the fries were fairly bland, not too greasy or too salty, but not particularly flavorful either. What's notable about Franky's is that outside of the lack of a poppy seed bun this is a pretty good representation of what a Chicago style hot dog is and should be. Even more surprising was the price, the dog with fries was only around 2.70 with tax. Overall, I'd recommend Franky's a very solid hot dog with a good price. read more

They argued with me for a while then offered to give me an Italian sausage. They gave me a sample of what's on the pizza but it was extremely greasy. The cashier stops you and says "It has to go through for $10, and then I'll give you change in cash." What? You swipe, and the machine notifies you that it will be yet ANOTHER $1 for a transaction fee. Seriously? But you're hungry, so whatever. The food doesn't look bad, and ... seriously, you're hungry. You bite into your food that is, along with much of the decor, reminiscent of Portillo's, and are disappointed. Even in your hunger, you recognize second-rate hot dogs. Okay, so tonight we were in the mood for some 'za, yes, I said 'za, deal with it. Franky's has good prices on pizza normally, and Fridays they're even better -- you can get an 18" thin crust for under $12, tax included, with unlimited toppings. Yep. All the toppings you want on a piping hot giant pizza for less than $12. Now, my husband being the hungry 20-something he is, we went for the 18" instead of the 16" (which is 10.50 on Fridays). And, somehow, we managed to eat the whole thing. The sauce was just right, the cheese was stretchy and salty, the pepperoni and garlic (hey, we both had it) were plentiful... It was yummy. The crust around the edges was perfect; it was a little soft in the middle. That was my only small complaint -- I wished for a somewhat crisper crust. Perhaps they needed to leave it in the oven another minute, I don't know. However, for the bargain price it is, and the fact that you can choose whatever weird combination of toppings you like (even halvesies) -- this is a great Friday night dinner. Or other nights for that matter! One tip we should have thought of -- it takes about 20 minutes for the pizza to cook. I think this place is great. My parents and my friends and i always order pizza from here. It's a good deal for the price and they don't gouge you for extra toppings. The beef is amazing. With that said, I don't understand the negative reviews. This is a greasy fast food place. If you want "quality " food, go to a restaurant! This is a fast food/greasy spoon and if you're eating here, then you should know what to expect; much like if you're eating at Pizza Hut or McDonald's you know what you're ordering, and you know what kind of food to expect. Love this place. I usually get their cheeseburgers because I love a good griddled burger. Not to mention it comes with fresh lettuce, tomato, and onion on a great bun. A co-worker raved about their chicken gyros, so I tried one last time and loved that too. They also give you a whole heap of fries in an order, enough for 2 people to share. I have great memories of going to Franky's when I was a kid. Of course, back then it was part of the Tommy's chain. In all my years of going here I've only had the hot dogs, italian beef, and gyros, even though the selection of food is much greater than just this. The hotdog special is a good deal, and comes with two Chicago dogs, fries and a drink. The dogs are pretty good, made in the typical Chicago manner, but sometimes tend to be a little soggy especially if you get them as take out. The italian beef is OK, but I prefer Portillo's. I really like the gyros sandwich. They give you a generous portion of lamb and toss it on the grill for a few minutes to crisp it up a bit. There is so much lamb meat that I usually need to take some off before I'm able to fold the pita to eat it. The tomatoes and onions are fresh and they slather on a good amount of cucumber sauce. The only drawback is that because they grill the meat for you, the whole thing tends to be pretty greasy. I have to admit that there are better Chicago eateries around, and this place would get five stars...if they were still Tommy's. Back then the food was a little better and the service a little friendlier. With that being said, the food is still pretty good and still I love to go here to get my fix when I go home to Chicago. 3.5 stars, rounded up to four. read more

The food is greasy and their fries taste like jalapenos, but it gets the job done. The huge problem I have with this place is how expensive this place is. I bought two gyros and two large fries. I recently had to move from the western 'burbs to Las Vegas and one place I'll miss more than anything will be Franky's. I first started going there when I lived in Addison for a couple years. Then as I moved farther away- Glendale Heights, then Naperville- I'd always make the trek back to Franky's on the weekends about once a week on average. The things that kept me coming back were the delicious Chicago food classics and the friendly staff. Franky's serves the best Gyros I've ever had- and I don't say that lightly. Gyros is probably my favorite sandwich ever and I've had it at dozens of places across Chicagoland. Franky's is the best - bar none. The thing that makes it a standout at Franky's is they toss the gyros meat on the grill for a few minutes after cutting it off the spit. This gives the meat a great crispy edge and releases the juices inside. Put it on a pita with perfect sauce and loads of onions and I'm a very happy boy. I'm also a huge burger fan and Franky's turns out a superior double cheese burger as well. They have a flame grill so you get that nice char on the patties. It's awesome. As for the dogs- they are classic Chicago style dogs. Can you find better elsewhere? Yes, but you can't beat the value of their daily hot dog basket deal. The guys behind the counter have always been top notch too. Always upbeat and welcoming- and Fast! My only hope is with the way that area is rapidly evolving with all the new construction and expansion of chain places like Portillo's and Al's, Franky's can stay afloat. I'd hate to make it back there in a few years and find them replaced by a new strip mall or worse yet, another taco stand as seems to be the trend. read more

So went there spent $45 got 4 gyros and wings. sauce on the side for the gyros get home we only have 2 sauces so I call and ask if I can bring the food back and they replace it so I can eat warm food that I spent $45 on instead he offers me a $5 credit (keep in mind a gyro alone cost about $9 unless it's Sunday) so I say you can't even buy 1 gyro for that so he says ok I can do $5.50 seriously they make sure to charge you 50 cents a sauce but then don't give it to you the manager there needs to go to a customer service class. Poor experience and we normally go once a week and spend $40 to $50 not anymore will be taking my business elsewhere!!!! read more

The place is decent looking, the food is okay, prices are good, but nothing stands out to make you want to come back. We tried the two hotdog special (not bad!) and the beef ("meh"). I also ordered iced tea and got raspberry tea instead because apparently that's all they have...would have been nice to have been told that when I SPECIFICALLY asked if they had ICED TEA. Oh well. First time being here. Placed my order, got to check out and they stated their credit card machine wasn't working. I didn't have cash on me. The manager on duty was on the phone with the company to fix the machine and was incredibly rude to me about it Being the nice person I am I hopped into my car and trecked to the bank. Came back to pay for my food. He was still on the phone and still incredibly rude. Finally got my food and I mentioned he should tell the people taking orders to alert people that the machine was broken. He made some snarky comment and turned his back to me. Franky's Red Hots is a purveyor of standard Chicago classic foods like hot dogs, pizzas and italian beef sandwiches at a very affordable price. It's impressive that this day in age you can get two hot dogs fries, and a beverage for $4. Definately delivering on the value here. They have some good daily specials on sandwich combos, and a very unusual pricing structure on their pizza pies. They use flat-rate pricing on their pizzas where for $12 you can get pizza and pile on unlimited numbers of toppings. I thought that was noteworthy, but I didn't try it and will have to try it upon a return trip to the area. After having an italian beef sandwich in the Minneapolis area just a mere week before, I found that they did deliver a superior product to what I had before. The beef was extremely tender, the gravy was ample and the bread was very fresh. The hot peppers were also the epitome of what I have come to expect in enjoying these Chicago delicacies. It's still there after so many years and the food is still much better than a lot of grease pits I've had the displeasure of sampling. It's the usual grease pit food, and the selection is huge. They have the regular fare: hot dogs, gyros, greasy french fries, italian beef. They also have pizza and ribs, though I've never tried. Prices are reasonable. You'll end up paying less than $5 for a hot dog meal, which is two hot dogs, fries, and a drink. The hot dogs are decent but a bit on the soggy side, so you really have to eat them right away or they lose their freshness. That's the only problem I found with them. read more
