Frank's, located in a shopping plaza was really busy when we went in on a Sunday early afternoon. But no complaints since it was our first time we needed the time to read the menu & the line went pretty fast. I ended up ordering the #19 because it was a mix of pizza & a sub, it came with pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and green olives also I added chicken. Things I did like: the ingredients were fresh, the bread was soft, there were equal parts of toppings & meat. Things I didn't like so much: I thought the sandwich would be hot or toasted similar to a pizza, also it was a little dry needed either more marinara or ranch or something to make it less hard to swallow. I also ordered a blueberry danish & a lemon tart pastry. I ate the danish so fast I didn't even get to take a pic it was so good. I should have written this years ago. Great sandwiches, pastries and amazingly fast service! In recent news they have several more bread choices than they used to, including tortilla wraps. I usually go for a #3 on the classic white bun which is soft and fresh (sub prosciutto cotto for cured prosciutto, it's more natural). Be prepared for loads of meat whatever you choose. Can't be beat for $6.20 tax in! The butter tarts (pecan and several other flavours) have a substantial crust, not very oily and also reasonably priced at $1.85 ea. Came here towards the end of August 2019, during my trip to Ottawa. One of the things that my Canadian friends would tell me to try is butter tarts. I was so hyped up by it, I ended up having high expectations. A lot of my friends' favs were pecan followed by plain. They had other flavors too like raspberry, lemon, chocolate, raisins, etc. Each tart was $1.85 but if you buy a dozen, you save 15 cents each ($1.50). By the time, I bit into the pecan one, I wasn't a big fan. I didn't see anything special about it. I prefer beaver tails over these butter tarts. The crust was crunchy and dry, slightly sweet, each flavor wasn't as "strong" as I thought it would be, and I couldn't taste the difference. Very bummer out. read more

I'm not usually one to obsess over sandwiches. That's my BF's thing. Thus why I found myself at Franks on Sunday around lunch time. He had previously been here with one of his friends and mentioned it several times so I agreed to give it a try. I consider myself pretty "boring" when it comes to sandwiches, I like mine with simple flavors, not spicy and no "out of the ordinary" condiments or items. Franks "Glover Junkyard" fit that bill perfectly! It had ham, turkey and salami, along with mayo and mustard, tomato, lettuce and Havarti (my favorite). When I ordered, they asked if I wanted white or whole wheat, I picked whole wheat. I was able to pay for my order while I waited, and decided to also get a tart, since they advertise them as being the best. I chose to go with their raspberry tart. I was expecting them to be small, but they are actually pretty big for tarts. I think they are a good size for 1.75$. Our sandwiches were done quickly and packed neatly into a bag with the tart. We took them home and I have to say, I was impressed! There was a lot of meat, the bread was soft and fresh, there was just the right amount of mayo and mustard. And the Havarti cheese went perfectly with everything. I really enjoyed the sandwich. For 5.50$ you get a good sized, meaty sandwich that's fresh! I don't know why anyone would ever want to go to Subway after eating one of these. The raspberry tart was good! The pastry was flaky, and the raspberry jelly centre was great, not too sweet, not too jelly! It didn't taste like fake flavours either. I liked it! I discovered Franks on Yelp and had it bookmarked for some time. I do love good sandwiches and my husband and I finally made it out there today. The sandwiches were very big, but the taste was just ok. There was also some chaos and mix up with the sandwiches and they almost gave our sandwiches to someone else. All sandwiches are $5.50. I ordered the #16 St. Andrew sandwich (roast beef, turkey, harvati, lettuce, tomatoes, hot peppers, mustard and special sauce) on white bread with green peppers instead of hot peppers. My husband ordered the #3 Glover Junkyard sandwich (ham, turkey, salami, havarti, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and onions) on whole wheat bread. You can chose hot or mild salami and my husband chose mild. We also shared a Maple Walnut tart ($1.75). My sandwich was really big. They give you a lot of meat and toppings piled really high. I had to open my mouth as wide as I could to accommodate the sandwich in my mouth (yeah, I know, that sounds really obscene). My jaw hurt slightly after finishing the sandwich. Size aside, the taste was just ok. It was the sum of its parts. I liked how the meats were sliced really thin, but it tasted to me like sandwiches that I make at home, just bigger and thicker (haha), and with iceberg lettuce (yuck) instead of Boston or leaf lettuce that I use at home. Also, the bread didn't taste super fresh to me and was somewhat dry. My husband liked his sandwich. He is a man of few words when it comes to food. When I asked him for more commentary, he said his bread was fresh tasting (he had whole wheat, while I had white). The Maple Walnut tart was too much crust, not enough filling for me. The crust was rich and buttery and the filling was sweet and slightly gooey. It smelled of maple syrup, but I didn't taste too many walnuts. When we walked in a bunch of people came in after us and it was a little hectic for the staff there. They seemed somewhat disorganized with several different people making several different sandwiches at the same time. The people behind us also ordered a #3 and a #16 and some other sandwiches. They were almost given our sandwiches when my husband said that we ordered before them and we also ordered a #3 and #16 so those should be ours. I added that I substituted green peppers for hot peppers, so the one with the substitution is mine. Well guess what? They didn't mark any substitutions on the wrapper they used to wrap the sandwich. They gave us the first #3 and #16 that were made, because as we were discussing it a second set of #3 and #16 came out. Thankfully the order was correct and my sandwich had the substitution that I made. They really need to organize themselves better and write on the wrappers if substitutions are made. There are only 2 tables of 4 here, so takeout is the way to go. They have cannolis and other baked goods, as well as ready to eat meals in the fridge. They are in a little strip mall, so there is a small parking lot with free parking. read more

I can say without a doubt, Franks Foods has THE best sandwiches in all of Ottawa hands down! When you walk in there is a huge board where you can select which sandwich you want accompanied by a photo of a person the sandwich is named after. I recommend trying the Mad Girls Gobbler. Their location opened up in May 2010, a month after my store opened up down the road. We've ordered from them in past via their catering. The prices are reasonable and without a doubt a good bang for your buck. A lot of people I know have a tough time eating the entire sandwich, (just loaded with delicious deli meat). Even if I am getting full, I just can't stop because it's so delicious. :) Another item on their menu that you have just gotta try is their famous butter tart which is one of my all-time favourite desserts. A little bit on the expensive side but generous portion and delicious taste. I recommend the raisin butter tart, but plain is also good! They also have frozen food, and catering available. I am definitely craving Franks right about now!! If you have not tried Franks, do yourself a favor and book a day to try it this week! Even better, order some sandwiches and some tarts and go for a picnic this summer. That's something I just might do! read more

I don't know what has been happening at Franks but the quality sure seems to be dropping. The last few times I've been the bread hasn't been fresh and even today during mid-lunch time I was given old bread again (not to mention asking for whole wheat and getting white bread). Even the butter tarts were a bit stale. If it wasn't take out, I'd have asked for a refund or replacement. All in all, Franks is a place I can no longer recommend which is a shame. read more

I popped in after seeing the high ratings from my fellow Yelpers and was not disappointed! This is a small place that I would have never known existed if it weren't for Yelp - but I think they like it that way as everyone seemed to be a regular when I was there. All of the choices are a little overwhelming (I looked online before I came so I knew what I was getting) and the line moves extremely quickly. The staff are very friendly and quick! I took my sandwich to go and was shocked by the weight of it when I left - they put so much meat on it and it was delicious. Very affordable for a super filling sandwich - I will definitely be back to try another one :) the tarts are also delicious, there is a lot of pastry though so if you aren't a fan of that then I would skip them, but they also have amazing looking pies and cookies! read more

These are the best sandwiches in Ottawa! They have a large menu board with all different types of deli meat combos. The sandwiches are named after different people that work there or are involved with the place. They have pictures of the people to go with the names. The meat portion on the sandwiches is very generous. You won't be hungry! The fresh baked good are also to die for. Good tarts and cannoli. They also do catering and have frozen entrees for sale. I went into the Meadowlands location for the first time to try one of their sandwiches. It was the best decision I made. The staff there were friendly and very helpful. I have never been to a sandwich place with so many options. On top of 30 different sandwiches to choose from, they had salads, frozen meals, whole pies, and bunch of pastries. A good sandwich is a beautiful thing. It doesn't have to include 'smoked-whatever on some unpronouceable bread' with grey poupon, served on a chilled plate in an Alpine chalet (although, come to think of it, that does sound nice). Sometimes a hearty, filling, sandwich needs to be kept straigh-forward. Today I ordered Frank's special on brown. Last week I had a Rocky Balboa, and the week before that, a Godfather. Each sandwich was stacked, delicious, fresh, and filling. And the price - $5.50 - is not even close to being a cringe-worthy. The tarts are a treat too. There have been times in my life when I expected to fall into a diabetic coma after biting into a butter tart. Not the case at Frank's. Frank's tarts achieve that perfect balance of rich crust and ample filling without causing type 2 diabetes in the consumer - not an easy ratio to keep - and worth every penny. I'm not finished sampling Frank's foods but so far, A+. read more

My mom and I were in the Barrhaven area for an appointment and looking for a place to have lunch. I pulled out my phone to check yelp recommendations and saw this place. As soon as I mentioned it to my mom she said "oh yes my friend Anna says this place is the best!" So off we went to find it. There is a line up which always is a good thing- I was trying to figure out what to order and was greeted by a super friendly man on the other side of the counter. Well after ordering and sitting down (not much room for sitting in- it's mostly a takeaway place) the friendly man sits down to chat with us as he knew it was our first time. Well then we learn this is none other than Frank, THE Frank, the owner. What a gem of a person! I can see why they have such loyal customers. He made my 81 year old mom feel really special. Actually, I've experienced way better! Just had a poutine and it was awful!!! There was gravy "sludge" I don't know what else to call it, but lumps of dark gravy all over my poutine. Like a gravy that had been sitting for a very long time uncovered and formed a film over the top........well that film was in my poutine!!! Yuck!!! Very unfriendly staff.............if Gordon Ramsay were to walk in there, he'd shut the place down just based on the staff, before he even got to taste the food!!!! Printed menu says poutine is $4.95, but the board says $5.95...........this is the location on Antares Dr. I work near there and have gone several times, and every time I always say I'm not going back......but then I don't want to drive anywhere and think maybe I just went on a bad day last time..............but it is always the same!!! I have no idea where they get off claiming that they have the best butter tarts in Ottawa. Quite frankly and in all honesty, my subjective opinion is that these are the absolute worst butter tarts I've ever tried... anywhere. Why do I say that when so many others state otherwise? Well simply put, I'm one who does not like a lot of dough nor do I have an overly sweet tooth. These tarts have an extreme amount of pastry dough folded at the top -- I'd say about as much open pastry at the top as what the entirety of the tart's base seems to have. So in other words a ratio of 2 to 1 of dough relative to the actual filling. Secondly, these tarts are by a mile the absolute sweetest, most sugary filling I've ever, ever had. Within seconds of eating just one, I could already feel a massive sugar-rush coming on. Definitely was not pleasant at all. I couldn't taste any flavors whatsoever -- just sugar. In fact, it's texture was such that there was no oozing at all. I mean literally no fluidity whatsoever, rather it was quite cakey instead, which leads me to suspect they don't just use corn syrup but probably also mix that with sugar, which would explain the stiff, extremely and overly sweet filling. read more
