    Glover Junkyard sandwich
    Stacey V.

I'm not usually one to obsess over sandwiches. That's my BF's thing. Thus why I found myself at Franks on Sunday around lunch time. He had previously been here with one of his friends and mentioned it several times so I agreed to give it a try. I consider myself pretty "boring" when it comes to sandwiches, I like mine with simple flavors, not spicy and no "out of the ordinary" condiments or items. Franks "Glover Junkyard" fit that bill perfectly! It had ham, turkey and salami, along with mayo and mustard, tomato, lettuce and Havarti (my favorite). When I ordered, they asked if I wanted white or whole wheat, I picked whole wheat. I was able to pay for my order while I waited, and decided to also get a tart, since they advertise them as being the best. I chose to go with their raspberry tart. I was expecting them to be small, but they are actually pretty big for tarts. I think they are a good size for 1.75$. Our sandwiches were done quickly and packed neatly into a bag with the tart. We took them home and I have to say, I was impressed! There was a lot of meat, the bread was soft and fresh, there was just the right amount of mayo and mustard. And the Havarti cheese went perfectly with everything. I really enjoyed the sandwich. For 5.50$ you get a good sized, meaty sandwich that's fresh! I don't know why anyone would ever want to go to Subway after eating one of these. The raspberry tart was good! The pastry was flaky, and the raspberry jelly centre was great, not too sweet, not too jelly! It didn't taste like fake flavours either. I liked it! I'd definitely like to have another Glover Junkyard in the near future, and would like to try some of the other tart flavours. Will be back!

I discovered Franks on Yelp and had it bookmarked for some time. I do love good sandwiches and my husband and I finally made it out there today. The sandwiches were very big, but the taste was just ok. There was also some chaos and mix up with the sandwiches and they almost gave our sandwiches to someone else. All sandwiches are $5.50. I ordered the #16 St. Andrew sandwich (roast beef, turkey, harvati, lettuce, tomatoes, hot peppers, mustard and special sauce) on white bread with green peppers instead of hot peppers. My husband ordered the #3 Glover Junkyard sandwich (ham, turkey, salami, havarti, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and onions) on whole wheat bread. You can chose hot or mild salami and my husband chose mild. We also shared a Maple Walnut tart ($1.75). My sandwich was really big. They give you a lot of meat and toppings piled really high. I had to open my mouth as wide as I could to accommodate the sandwich in my mouth (yeah, I know, that sounds really obscene). My jaw hurt slightly after finishing the sandwich. Size aside, the taste was just ok. It was the sum of its parts. I liked how the meats were sliced really thin, but it tasted to me like sandwiches that I make at home, just bigger and thicker (haha), and with iceberg lettuce (yuck) instead of Boston or leaf lettuce that I use at home. Also, the bread didn't taste super fresh to me and was somewhat dry. My husband liked his sandwich. He is a man of few words when it comes to food. When I asked him for more commentary, he said his bread was fresh tasting (he had whole wheat, while I had white). The Maple Walnut tart was too much crust, not enough filling for me. The crust was rich and buttery and the filling was sweet and slightly gooey. It smelled of maple syrup, but I didn't taste too many walnuts. When we walked in a bunch of people came in after us and it was a little hectic for the staff there. They seemed somewhat disorganized with several different people making several different sandwiches at the same time. The people behind us also ordered a #3 and a #16 and some other sandwiches. They were almost given our sandwiches when my husband said that we ordered before them and we also ordered a #3 and #16 so those should be ours. I added that I substituted green peppers for hot peppers, so the one with the substitution is mine. Well guess what? They didn't mark any substitutions on the wrapper they used to wrap the sandwich. They gave us the first #3 and #16 that were made, because as we were discussing it a second set of #3 and #16 came out. Thankfully the order was correct and my sandwich had the substitution that I made. They really need to organize themselves better and write on the wrappers if substitutions are made. There are only 2 tables of 4 here, so takeout is the way to go. They have cannolis and other baked goods, as well as ready to eat meals in the fridge. They are in a little strip mall, so there is a small parking lot with free parking.

I can say without a doubt, Franks Foods has THE best sandwiches in all of Ottawa hands down! When you walk in there is a huge board where you can select which sandwich you want accompanied by a photo of a person the sandwich is named after. I recommend trying the Mad Girls Gobbler. Their location opened up in May 2010, a month after my store opened up down the road. We've ordered from them in past via their catering. The prices are reasonable and without a doubt a good bang for your buck. A lot of people I know have a tough time eating the entire sandwich, (just loaded with delicious deli meat). Even if I am getting full, I just can't stop because it's so delicious. :) Another item on their menu that you have just gotta try is their famous butter tart which is one of my all-time favourite desserts. A little bit on the expensive side but generous portion and delicious taste. I recommend the raisin butter tart, but plain is also good! They also have frozen food, and catering available. I am definitely craving Franks right about now!! If you have not tried Franks, do yourself a favor and book a day to try it this week! Even better, order some sandwiches and some tarts and go for a picnic this summer. That's something I just might do!

Top: chocolate tart Bottom: pecan tart Also got a citrus cannoli and a date square!
    Mimi J.

Delicious, freshly-made tarts! I tried pecan as well as chocolate and would say the caramel flavours of the pecan version is better. I also grabbed the last citrus cannoli; the filling was not too sweet and it was rich and yummy. Next time I'll try the sandwich, and fill it with all the toppings.

Probably should have taken a photo before I ate half of it!

I popped in after seeing the high ratings from my fellow Yelpers and was not disappointed! This is a small place that I would have never known existed if it weren't for Yelp - but I think they like it that way as everyone seemed to be a regular when I was there. All of the choices are a little overwhelming (I looked online before I came so I knew what I was getting) and the line moves extremely quickly. The staff are very friendly and quick! I took my sandwich to go and was shocked by the weight of it when I left - they put so much meat on it and it was delicious. Very affordable for a super filling sandwich - I will definitely be back to try another one :) the tarts are also delicious, there is a lot of pastry though so if you aren't a fan of that then I would skip them, but they also have amazing looking pies and cookies!

Beautiful hand made baked goods, you must buy a buttermilk pie. No preservatives or strange chemicals, just amazing hand made baked goods, meals and great deli sandwiches.

The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

This sandwich is literally the reason I downloaded this app…read more I've just spent the whole winter in Quebec and am now hitchhiking across Canada and decided to stay in Ottawa a few days. I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school. I got the Chicken Sandwich ($15.95). It was sliced real chicken breast meat, mozzarella cheese, mixed greens, cucumbers, picked onions and fig jam. It usually comes with mayo, but I asked them to omit it. All sandwiches come with a mini 4 oz soup. I chose the curried carrot and squash soup. The sandwich was delicious. The bread they use is a Kaiser and it's from Carp Bakery. It was soft and very fresh. I loved that the meat was real chicken and not deli meat. The fig jam was tasty and gave the sandwich a nice sweet taste. The soup was a bit watery, but was full of flavour. It had a strong curry flavour and the coconut milk in it made it a bit creamy. I enjoyed it. Funny story: I ordered the chicken sandwich. They ask your name for the order. The lady who ordered after me also got the chicken sandwich but she asked for no cheese. The cashier announced to the kitchen "no cheese on the chicken sandwich" and the kitchen asked "which order? Jennifer's?" And the cashier said "no, the next one, I haven't punched it in yet." Lol. I chimed in "I love cheese, I definitely want cheese on my sandwich!" The man in the kitchen said "alright, extra cheese for Jennifer!" And the lady after me said "yeah, you can have my cheese." Haha. So I got two slices of cheese in my sandwich. Score! Lol. Everyone working there was super nice and friendly. It's a small place, so the cash and the kitchen are right next to each other. I took my order to go, but there's seating to dine in. I noticed they have a small amount of branded merchandise, like baseball caps. There is free parking in their private parking lot at the back of the restaurant. Fun facts: The Wiches Cauldron started off as a food truck in the early/mid 2010s. I might just go with the eggplant and skip the other 3 next time. Ingredients tasted fresh. The sandwich was much tastier than at those fast food chains. It's a takeout only joint, located in a strip mall. Lots of free parking in the strip mall.

Their meatballs and their steak is halal and kept at a separated container form the deli meat.. I got a steak sandwich their pre picked choice and it was very flavourful and fresh, and I think it will be both my lunch and dinner! The guy that served me was super friendly and can't wait to bring the rest of my family here

Should have checked in on all the negative reviews everywhere on this place. I would give a -5 if I…read morecould. Surprised it is still in business. Went in to buy some cookies as a treat for my grandsons. I paid cash as they only take cash, debit or e transfer. The worker there was making strange noises so I asked her if she was ok. She yelled "No, your perfume is making me sick!" I was shocked. I told her I was not wearing any perfume nor was I wearing deodorant. She immediately started swearing at me calling me a "Stupid c##t!" Unbelievable now finding out this worker is actually the business owner. My response was right back at her in her low life language. I tossed her box of cookies at the door on my way out...good riddance! She may be "just a girl (her pic is from 30 years ago) trying to help the celiac world" as she responds to everyone's reviews but it sounds like she needs help in another area. This was sheer whack-a-doodle rage. Looking at her videos/pics she is touching the food with bare hands (customers are supposed to believe your hands are clean?) yet she screams at others and insists they wear gloves. If you are that sensitive wear a mask for Pete's sake lady. People use soap to wash their clothes and their hands. Can't wait to see how she responds to this incident and tries to turn it around on me who simply asked if she was ok out of kindness. Stay as far away from this place as you can unless you want your head bit off.

Thank goodness there are now so many other Gluten Free options.
