    Glover Junkyard sandwich
    Stacey V.

I'm not usually one to obsess over sandwiches. That's my BF's thing. Thus why I found myself at Franks on Sunday around lunch time. He had previously been here with one of his friends and mentioned it several times so I agreed to give it a try. I consider myself pretty "boring" when it comes to sandwiches, I like mine with simple flavors, not spicy and no "out of the ordinary" condiments or items. Franks "Glover Junkyard" fit that bill perfectly! It had ham, turkey and salami, along with mayo and mustard, tomato, lettuce and Havarti (my favorite). When I ordered, they asked if I wanted white or whole wheat, I picked whole wheat. I was able to pay for my order while I waited, and decided to also get a tart, since they advertise them as being the best. I chose to go with their raspberry tart. I was expecting them to be small, but they are actually pretty big for tarts. I think they are a good size for 1.75$. Our sandwiches were done quickly and packed neatly into a bag with the tart. We took them home and I have to say, I was impressed! There was a lot of meat, the bread was soft and fresh, there was just the right amount of mayo and mustard. And the Havarti cheese went perfectly with everything. I really enjoyed the sandwich. For 5.50$ you get a good sized, meaty sandwich that's fresh! I don't know why anyone would ever want to go to Subway after eating one of these. The raspberry tart was good! The pastry was flaky, and the raspberry jelly centre was great, not too sweet, not too jelly! It didn't taste like fake flavours either. I liked it! I'd definitely like to have another Glover Junkyard in the near future, and would like to try some of the other tart flavours. Will be back!

    Maple walnut tart $1.75.

I discovered Franks on Yelp and had it bookmarked for some time. I do love good sandwiches and my husband and I finally made it out there today. The sandwiches were very big, but the taste was just ok. There was also some chaos and mix up with the sandwiches and they almost gave our sandwiches to someone else. All sandwiches are $5.50. I ordered the #16 St. Andrew sandwich (roast beef, turkey, harvati, lettuce, tomatoes, hot peppers, mustard and special sauce) on white bread with green peppers instead of hot peppers. My husband ordered the #3 Glover Junkyard sandwich (ham, turkey, salami, havarti, mustard, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and onions) on whole wheat bread. You can chose hot or mild salami and my husband chose mild. We also shared a Maple Walnut tart ($1.75). My sandwich was really big. They give you a lot of meat and toppings piled really high. I had to open my mouth as wide as I could to accommodate the sandwich in my mouth (yeah, I know, that sounds really obscene). My jaw hurt slightly after finishing the sandwich. Size aside, the taste was just ok. It was the sum of its parts. I liked how the meats were sliced really thin, but it tasted to me like sandwiches that I make at home, just bigger and thicker (haha), and with iceberg lettuce (yuck) instead of Boston or leaf lettuce that I use at home. Also, the bread didn't taste super fresh to me and was somewhat dry. My husband liked his sandwich. He is a man of few words when it comes to food. When I asked him for more commentary, he said his bread was fresh tasting (he had whole wheat, while I had white). The Maple Walnut tart was too much crust, not enough filling for me. The crust was rich and buttery and the filling was sweet and slightly gooey. It smelled of maple syrup, but I didn't taste too many walnuts. When we walked in a bunch of people came in after us and it was a little hectic for the staff there. They seemed somewhat disorganized with several different people making several different sandwiches at the same time. The people behind us also ordered a #3 and a #16 and some other sandwiches. They were almost given our sandwiches when my husband said that we ordered before them and we also ordered a #3 and #16 so those should be ours. I added that I substituted green peppers for hot peppers, so the one with the substitution is mine. Well guess what? They didn't mark any substitutions on the wrapper they used to wrap the sandwich. They gave us the first #3 and #16 that were made, because as we were discussing it a second set of #3 and #16 came out. Thankfully the order was correct and my sandwich had the substitution that I made. They really need to organize themselves better and write on the wrappers if substitutions are made. There are only 2 tables of 4 here, so takeout is the way to go. They have cannolis and other baked goods, as well as ready to eat meals in the fridge. They are in a little strip mall, so there is a small parking lot with free parking.

I can say without a doubt, Franks Foods has THE best sandwiches in all of Ottawa hands down! When you walk in there is a huge board where you can select which sandwich you want accompanied by a photo of a person the sandwich is named after. I recommend trying the Mad Girls Gobbler. Their location opened up in May 2010, a month after my store opened up down the road. We've ordered from them in past via their catering. The prices are reasonable and without a doubt a good bang for your buck. A lot of people I know have a tough time eating the entire sandwich, (just loaded with delicious deli meat). Even if I am getting full, I just can't stop because it's so delicious. :) Another item on their menu that you have just gotta try is their famous butter tart which is one of my all-time favourite desserts. A little bit on the expensive side but generous portion and delicious taste. I recommend the raisin butter tart, but plain is also good! They also have frozen food, and catering available. I am definitely craving Franks right about now!! If you have not tried Franks, do yourself a favor and book a day to try it this week! Even better, order some sandwiches and some tarts and go for a picnic this summer. That's something I just might do!

Top: chocolate tart Bottom: pecan tart Also got a citrus cannoli and a date square!

Delicious, freshly-made tarts! I tried pecan as well as chocolate and would say the caramel flavours of the pecan version is better. I also grabbed the last citrus cannoli; the filling was not too sweet and it was rich and yummy. Next time I'll try the sandwich, and fill it with all the toppings.

Probably should have taken a photo before I ate half of it!

I popped in after seeing the high ratings from my fellow Yelpers and was not disappointed! This is a small place that I would have never known existed if it weren't for Yelp - but I think they like it that way as everyone seemed to be a regular when I was there. All of the choices are a little overwhelming (I looked online before I came so I knew what I was getting) and the line moves extremely quickly. The staff are very friendly and quick! I took my sandwich to go and was shocked by the weight of it when I left - they put so much meat on it and it was delicious. Very affordable for a super filling sandwich - I will definitely be back to try another one :) the tarts are also delicious, there is a lot of pastry though so if you aren't a fan of that then I would skip them, but they also have amazing looking pies and cookies!

Beautiful hand made baked goods, you must buy a buttermilk pie. No preservatives or strange chemicals, just amazing hand made baked goods, meals and great deli sandwiches.

I know that "real baking" is full of sugar and fat, and this is how most people like it, but I personally prefer reduced-fat and reduced-sugar baking, lol. That being said, I can still appreciate full-fat and full-sugar baked goods, haha. They are a nut-free bakery, so if you are allergic to nuts, you need not worry about eating items here. And their (nut-free) carrot cake is really good! If I recall correctly, they put pineapple in it, yum! I didn't even miss the walnuts. I was in the mood for a Sfogliatella (lobster tail pastry), so my husband and I went to Little Italy to get one. Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana has been around since 1979, but I had never been there before. They had a large selection of desserts and gelato. We took our pastry to-go, but they have some seating both indoors and on their raised front patio and street-level side patio. The Sfogliatella was $7.49 which is the most I've ever paid for this pastry. Fortunately, it was delicious. Very crispy and flakey on the outside and softer on the inside with a generous amount of cream. I prefer the ricotta cheese filling slightly more, but I like the cream filling too. It was light and airy and not too sweet. Service was efficient and pleasant. The shop has a one way flow, you enter one door and you follow the arrows and exit a different door. The area to wait for service is narrow, so this process prevents congestion and crowding. I like it. Great for the occasional treat, but a bit too spendy for me. (77)

I got 2 Portuguese egg tarts (Pasteis de Nata) $2.50 each, 2 cannoli $3.50 each and a cream filled horn pastry $3.50. I didn't like that none of the items had prices listed anywhere, so I had to ask how much everything was. The egg tarts were not fresh, as the pastry was all soft and chewy. The filling was sweet, rich and smooth though. I love Portuguese egg tarts for their flakey pastry with that crispiness to them when they are fresh, and I did not get that here. The cannoli fortunately were not soft nor soggy, but rather crunchy, despite being prefilled. The shell was a bit too dense and oily tasting for liking though. However, the filling was tasty. The cream horn was filled with a smooth custard, which I enjoyed, but I didn't really like the dry crumbly pastry. Overall, I enjoyed the fillings of the items I bought, but not the pastry. Service was neutral. I don't think they take credit cards because when I went to pay by credit, the man asked me if I had debit instead. The bakery is co-located with Syrian Kitchen. They have retained the Portuguese name and products from working with the previous co-owner. This is currently the only place you can get Syrian falafel in town. They gave me and my partner each a sample falafel to try - the falafels were flavourful, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I liked it much better than a lot of other falafels in town!!! $0.65 each if you were to buy. Looks like they are made to order, or the pre-made ones are within the hour and fresh. We tried the Syrian falafel wrap ($6) and Beef steak sandwich ($7) and both were delicious. Don't expect the food to come super fast like other shawarma-type places because they don't have an assembly line. For the beef steak sandwich, they sauteed mushrooms and onions along with the beef on their grill until caramelized, which took a while, but it tasted so homey and fresh. Beef was a little tough but the flavour was good. We got a bunch of natas (Portuguese egg tarts) and they were really good. $1.75 each. We also got a bunch of kibbehs (beef croquettes) - which I have just reheated and am eating right now on Day #2 - and they are flavourful and still juicy inside even after reheating. 5/5 would buy again. And of course we got extra Syrian falafels to go....because they're so good and we eat them like cookies (except healthier...I think). Lovely people, homey food at very reasonable prices. Cannot wait to come back again.
