    Turkey and Hot Capicollo Sandwich
    Arnold L.

Upon my recent visit to Ottawa, Di Rienzo was always on my list to revisit from my Carleton University days, especially if you are on a student budget. \ Di Rienzo is a nice small staple in Ottawa that offers humble and delicious sandwiches that will keep you full and satisfied! From a variety of deli meats to pick, you can pick and choose your sandwich combinations depending on what you are craving. I had to get the #1 special with Turkey and Hot Capicollo which starts with freshly baked bread serving as the base from the thick slices of meat with the right amount of lettuce, tomato and mayo. Be prepared to wait in lines as locals and many working professionals will queue in line and for good reason during the lunch hour! I can't wait to revisit Ottawa again just to have a sandwich from Di Rienzo's!

Omg! I can't believe I have never reviewed Di Rienzos before! So my first time there was about 15 years ago when I was living in Little Italy (where Di Rienzos is). My landlord told me about the place, she said and I quote "the place is dirty, but the sandwiches are delicious!" Well, she didn't work in marketing, that's for sure, lol. So I didn't exactly run there after she told me about it, but one day I did decide to check it out, and let me tell you, the sandwiches are in fact delicious! As for the sanitation, I wasn't entirely thrilled with the fact that at the time they had open containers of different types of bread and you would stick your hand in the container pick a roll and hand it to the staff member who would use it to make your sandwich. Fast forward 15 years and we are now in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, and this practice is no more, all the bread is behind the counter now and only the staff handle the bread. They also used to have all their desserts in open boxes on the counters, which in the summer attracted a lot of flies that would land on the desserts. So I can see why my former landlord held the opinion that she did. So Di Rienzos is a convenience store that sells a lot of Italian products. They have hot and cold sandwiches, pasta, and Italian desserts. They also sell samosas, which seem a little out of place, but hey, that's what's awesome about Canada, right? Cannoli and samosas side by side! Over the years I have tried many of their items. My favourite remains their hot Roast Beef sandwich (which I haven't seen in a while, hope they haven't discontinued selling it). It's a thick piece of oh so tender roast beef with a slice of mozzarella cheese. It's so good! All their hot sandwiches are pre-made and wrapped in plastic wrap. There's a limited amount made every day. Their Chicken Parmigiana sandwich is also delicious. Their cold cuts sandwiches are good as well. My favourite is #6, Turkey, Prosciutto and Harvarti Cheese. So 15 years ago, their sandwiches were $3.50. Now they are $7. Their desserts are fantastic. I love their Sfogliatelle Ricce (Lobster tail pastry), and Cannoli. And their samosas aren't bad either ;) Paulo is the owner and he's very friendly. He always calls me Signorina ("Miss" in Italian). Every single person who I have taken to Di Rienzos loves their sandwiches. This place is very popular. If you go around lunchtime be prepared for a lineup. There's a small private parking lot, but there will only be available spots during off-peak hours. Otherwise, there's street parking nearby. Di Rienzos is an institution here in Ottawa!

Sandwich #1 - turkey havarti lettuce tomato salami with spicy eggplant
    Shayna S.

Best sandwich! Fresh bread, quality ingredients - best salami I've had at a sandwich place. The sandwich is extremely big and I had to split it into two meals. Authentic Italian for sure. The staff is kind and chatty. The price for a sandwich is around 8.50. 10/10 recommend, make sure to add the spicy eggplant

$7 sandwich bigger than a small football. Been coming here since 2004. Same delicious Italian subs

Still so awesome. Prices are up to $7 a Sandwich now. Still the best Italian subs in Ottawa. Nothing has changed since my previous review. More warm to go pasta offerings. A true hidden gem!

So I got the Combo #1 which is a jumbo smoked meat sandwich, fries, coleslaw, a pickle and a can of pop for $15.99. I like that the meat was lean, but it didn't have that firm texture that I like with smoked meat, it had a more deli meat texture. Nonetheless it was flavourful and smelled delicious. I wouldn't describe the sandwich as jumbo, but it was an ok size, not small. The rye bread was fresh and the amount of mustard on the sandwich was acceptable (not too much, but not skimpy). I really enjoyed the fries, which were really crispy. The coleslaw was regular mayo-based coleslaw. Service was friendly. There are a few tables to dine in. This location has been many restaurants over the years. Prior to Markie's it was a Greek place called Babinos (which was so good, I was disappointed that they closed), and prior to that it was a sandwich shop called Robz (was meh IMO), and prior to that it was a Chinese takeout joint called Ho-Lee-Pow (never tried), and before that it was a location of the famous Chinese takeout chain Ho-Lee-Chow (didn't need to try, lol). It's been 5 different places over the last 13 years. When I started writing this I thought the turnover was high, but now that I think about it, I guess it not too bad. The location is in a strip mall with a few other food places (Mr Sub, Gabriel Pizza and Shish Kabab House). Lots of free parking.

However, the lady puts on gloves when she makes your sandwich and removes the gloves when handling the cash. Big points for this. If they kept their bulk buns in a more hygienic place they would get even bigger points from me. They sell lots of candy and cookies from Poland and they also have lots of Polish desserts. The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

Prepare to be amazed............... We had heard about his place for months and how awesome it was so we finally decided to try it out. They have a set number of sandwiches and you can also make your own, but we decided to try their set sandwiches. I got the Parkdale and the Holland, my wife got the Bayswater, and we picked up a Scott for my daughter. When we got home, we were nothing short of blown away. The quality of the sandwich was amazing - the bread was light and fluffy, a ton of meat, fresh veggies, great sauces, just incredible quality. More importantly, fantastic value for money. Even more importantly, the staff were wonderful - they chatted with us but kept the line moving - super professional and friendly. The quality of the sandwiches here rivals Old Tyme - no word of a lie. The bread they use is very very close to what we had in Lafayette and the quality of the fillings is outstanding. Don't walk, run to this place. It will change your life for what you think about sandwiches.

ARRIVAL: -I was in Ottawa from nyc for a couple days for work in September of 2022 (last year). I wrote this review then, but forgot to post it. -I came here in the afternoon on a weekday. There were a few tables occupied, but the place was largely empty. -When I was there, it was not actually open 24 hours. I could not find the hours posted anywhere online. Google maps and several other places still listed it as 24-hour. I showed up around 11pm the night before, found out they were closed, and saw the hours posted on the door. So I came back the next day. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the Reuben w/ home fries because I wanted to try some of their "famous" smoked meet. -The sandwich tasted good and was a good amount of food for the price, but overall the quality was very average. The meat was sliced super thin, had a rubbery texture, and did not have a lot of flavor. -The home fries I had with the Reuben were above average though: perfectly crispy cubes of potato with soft, fluffy insides. SERVICE: -Servers were friendly and capable. ATMOSPHERE: -It's sort of like a mix of a sports bar and a diner. There are tons of tables and booths like a diner or chain restaurant, but with decor and style more like a bar. -The only real problem with my experience here is that there were wasps flying around my table. I was sat near a window and it was a nice day so all the doors and big windows were open. I know they were wasps because there were several of them, they landed on my table a few times, and I killed one. I know there's not a lot a restaurant can do about flying bugs like that, but they were there when I arrived and they were there an hour later when I left. I don't understand how no one noticed them or why they would still sit me near a window if they did. Maybe they mistook them for flies or bees, but either way someone could have offered to move me when they saw there were so many bugs flying around my area. One of the servers even commented on them as he walked by and then opened up more windows. I assume he was trying to give the wasps more ways to leave, but it just let in more. It really ruined my experience because I worried about getting stung and about them getting on my food the whole time.
