The sandwiches are big, the flavor combinations are already put together nicely, and the people working there are super friendly. Amazing little grocer, always have fresh-made food whether it's packaged salads, homemade baked goods or hot samosas. The service is excellent, they are always so accommodating and put a smile on my face. The sandwiches are incredible, huge size for a great price. They're all incredible but my favourite is definitely the #8 ham and turkey. Unbelievable. I just showed up 3 mins after closing, running and out of breath because I had been craving a sub. They saw me anyway and the young man unlocked the door, let me in, didn't rush me AT ALL and happily made my sandwich, despite being closed! You can't NOT support these guys, they're the best. DiRienzo's is another Ottawa establishment that seems to have a bit of a cult status with locals. Many people deem it the best place to go in the city for a huge and delicious sandwich. Did I mention they usually cost less than $5? It's not an easy place to find since it's a couple blocks west of Preston Street, but once you find it, you'll most likely come back for more. It's best to avoid the lunch rush if possible because line-ups go out the door in this mom and pop grocery and deli. It has a strong community vibe and the staff are very friendly despite being incredibly busy. My favourite (vegetarian) sandwich is the Il Giardino. They also serve lasagna and various delicious pastries. If you're looking to eat right away, there's no seating in the deli, but you can sit at a picnic table at the park across the street. read more

Best panini's in town hands down and friendly staff. I've been coming here for years and when I was young it was cheaper I feel the prices have been raised 6$ a sandwich they used to be 4.50$ but who's complaining with the economy today id rather support small local owned hard working businesses like this family owned one than a conglomerate. Fantastic place to buy a sandwich. They can make a sandwich faster than you can order a sandwich. Nice large, crusty buns, piled on with thick, juicy meats and other fixin's. The flavours can't be beat. If my mom had served me sandwiches like this when I was younger, I would have eaten a lot more sandwiches. If the smell of the bakery doesn't convince you than the lineup of Police officer, city workers and all other people waiting in line for the sandwiches will. I've tried alllll the sandwiches but my favorite will always be the Alexi Diavoli (spelling not official) i add extra eggplant and extra capicollo and then I go sit in the park and just devour it. Absolutely amazing. The owner is very kind and you feel right at home when you enter. It is a small convenience store (not sit down), but they have excellent buns, sandwiches, and desserts! The cannolis are the best in town. They are comparable to cannolis in Italy. Very delicious, affordable, friendly service. After hearing about Di Rienzo's for years, but never having had the pleasure, I visited with my wife and daughter for lunch on a hot summer day. The storefront is modest and the shop itself is compact but efficiently organized for fast service. Once inside, select a pasta from the warming station in front of you (my daughter chose her favourite ... spaghetti and meatballs), unless of course you have your eye on the delicious-looking sandwiches you'll no doubt notice in the hands of hungry customers on their way out. In that case, enter the sandwich line-up to the left, choose one of the large white or whole wheat rolls and hand it to the kitchen staff, then select from one of eighteen sandwich varieties listed on the white board above the counter. Apparently #14 (soppressata calabrese, extra hot capicollo, prosciutto coto, Provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and mustard) is very popular, and it did not disappoint, however I can't imagine that any of the choices would disappoint. The #14 might benefit from mayonnaise, oil or spicy eggplant (or all three) which you can request, but who am I to quibble with the specialists. Our sandwiches were large and the bread soft, stuffed with fresh, tasty deli meats and cheeses, which we thoroughly enjoyed under a shade tree in the park across the street. Cold Cut Sandwich is to die for! Made freshly right in front of you is a plus; the wait for them to assemble the sandwich is a (minor) minus, but then again - the anticipation just makes the sandwich that much better. : ) So far, I've only been here once for a quick lunch break. I had the cold cut sandwich, which they said was the most popular item. It was incredible! There was quite a bit of meat, and even pepperocinis for a bit of kick. We were visiting Ottawa for the first time and had read about this deli when we were researching the Ottawa area. We stopped there for a sandwich but were distracted by the delicious looking cannolis on the counter. We talked to the young man behind the counter and he told us a bit about the restaurant and a lot about the food. We ordered the most popular sandwich which he made to our specifications. We asked for one cannoli and he had already put two in a take out box "on the house". The food was excellent. The service was friendly and efficient.
