Arepas are hard to come by in Ottawa. There are very few permanent eateries that sell them. Lately there have been a few pop ups and kiosks/stalls at Farmers' Markets that sell arepas, but they are still relatively rare here. Gooney's sells arepas!! I got the Pabellon arepa ($8.99) which had shredded beef, black beans, plantains and feta cheese, with a creamy cilantro sauce. It was super tasty, but a bit small for the price. The arepa was steaming hot and a bit crunchy on the outside, but soft and fluffy on the inside. The amount of meat was ok, but was mostly around the opening, as I got to the bottom/end I was just eating arepa and feta cheese. I think I got 2 pieces of plantains, but they were fairly thin. I think I would need 2 to feel full/satisfied, lol. Maybe I'm just a little girl with a big appetite ;) This place is popular, so be prepared to line up and wait. The line moved fairly quickly though. Service was efficient. They also sell sandwiches and rice/salad bowls, oh and alfajores too! Gooney's is a cute little place and one of the few places in town where you can get arepas! Street parking only.

Have you ever tried an arepa before? Gooney's makes delicious ones that are absolutely stuffed with yummy fillings! ¡Que riiiico! The Pabellón ($10.50): an arepa filled with shredded beef, feta, black beans, plantain and Gooney's famous cilantro sauce! The Cadillac ($8.50): two eggs, bacon, avocado, feta and some of that delicious homemade cilantro sauce! Marrón: a mix of tea and coffee that was tasty to try alongside our arepas! The staff were friendly and made our orders quickly. We sat down to eat since they have tables and chairs in their cozy venue. We went on a Saturday and a lunch rush came in after we already sat down. We probably otherwise wouldn't have found a spot to sit and to have our stroller with our little one next to us. There are stairs going down to get inside, so keep that in mind for strollers and wheelchairs. There is only street parking available. We loooved the arepas and would definitely come back for more! Gooney's cilantro sauce is AMAZING!

A small sandwich shop in the heart of downtown Ottawa! This place serves up Latin bowls, arepas and sandwiches as well as breakfast! I ordered the spicy shredded chicken and you can choose whatever toppings you want from pickles, onions, a variety of sauces and more! I also got the pulled beef arepa with cheddar cheese! The sandwich was good! The arepa was a solid 3/5, I wish the meat had more flavour and the arepa was cold. I would give them another try! Keep Eating, Angel

    Gooney's Morning Arepa - Feta/Bacon/Avocado

These are some sizable arepas! Nice crunchy outside with that underlying flavour of corn and a fluffy inside. I could easily have just eaten one as a meal. I was served by a nice middle-aged man who told me I could order the lunch arepa even in the morning. He recommended the llanera, which ended up being my favourite of the two. The Gooney's morning arepa had crispy bacon, creamy feta and a bit of avocado. It's the lighter option of the two that I got, served nice and warm. The Llanera was shredded beef in a delicious, every so slightly spicy sauce with a bigger dollop of avocado and a slice of tomato. As you can tell by the pictures the llanera was a lot heftier, and packed with flavour. I'm not an expert, but I will say that I enjoyed the hospitality and the food tasted great!

    Background story

A very unique restaurant experience. Arepas are a Venezuelan traditional dish. One alone is enough to start your day, and served in minutes. I had the Perico, with just bacon, egg and cheddar cheese. Might be a new trend for breakfast. The price is cheap, compared to most breakfast meals. The place is clean and modern... but is hot inside. No A/C? Makes it feel like you are in Venezuela I guess... very authentic taste to the food.

    Beef Arepa and cappuccino

This is a decent alternate to the same old same old sandwich for breakfast/lunch that line this area. I ordered the Arepas (beef and cheese) and a side of cappuccino. I enjoyed my Arepas and cappuccino and due to the pandemic the interaction with the staff was minimal. Give this place a try if you are tired of trying the regular grab and go.

Inside the establishment is smaller than I'd expect with a couple of tables tightly knit together. Expect close seating and small tables. They also get busy, but take reservations. Asada fries - Lots of fries, crispy and loaded with toppings. The veggies, pico de gallo and salsa all come together nicely to balance out the cheese and fries. There was so much toppings that the last fries were eaten before the toppings were finished off. Taco de Carnitas - Proteins felt a bit dry and lacked sauce to back up to dryness. Big portion, but for $8.... its a bit steep. would not recommend. Taco de Carne Asada - A good portion for a single taco, but as with the other taco $8 is a bit too much for just one. This time proteins was more juicy and you get a hint for carmalization from the charred meat. Tacos not worth. Would come back for Asada fries but add protein. WIll try the wings (they look stacked) and maybe a torta.

Their brick and mortar home serves the same classics that they had at the truck and then some. Their menu has expanded to include some appetizers, tacos and cocktails. The prices have gone up but worth the money since it's probably the best mexican food in Ottawa. The fish tacos we got were made fresh and dressed with plenty of fresh, sour, creamy pairings. The Asada Fries are as good as ever. A mountain of guac and dressings and super crispy fries. Got the pastor torta this time around--this was the only thing I thought could use a bit more acidity since the meat was generous but a bit heavy. The tuna tostada is my new favourite. it was fresh, bright, spicy and as always, all the textures. Service is lovely.

The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

Di Rienzo's is a small deli tucked away in Ottawa's little Italy neighborhood but trust me it's no secret. The smell here is your first clue that your in for somethings delicious, if you weren't hungry when you arrived you will be once the aroma hits your nostrils. They have a selection of Italian pre-packaged products and various snacks, as well as cold drinks to complete your meal. That said, this joint is all about the sandwiches. They'll make whatever combo of meats, cheese, and toppings you want but if your unsure just pick one of the options on the board. I almost always get the #14. It's all the delicious Italian meats you could want plus havarti, lettuce, and mayo (exchange the regular havarti for the herbed havarti if you'd like). The bread is amazing quality as well. You really can't go wrong here. They have some sandwiches in a case ready to go as well, such as the steak which I hear is amazing. The staff here couldn't be more friendly and accommodating which is no small feat for a place this busy. There are no tables so it's takeout only and It IS cash only however they have an ATM for the unprepared. Oh, lest I forget, this amazing and quality sandwich is less than 10 bucks! This spot is a real gem and if you find yourself nearby you absolutely have to try it out.

The eggs could have used some seasoning even with salsa it needed something extra A Vegan Breakfast Bowl ($14) - a mixture of tofu, spinach, mushrooms and tomato chutney - which somehow tasted to all 4 of us like onion chutney. The vegetables done good, but tofu again had just no flavour. Tofu had a spice rub all over, but it tasted like plain tofu. The Bacun strips were rice paper rolls with some attempted flavours but none came through. And two Vegan Bennies ($16) - a super grainy slice of bread topped with the same tofu, green onions, Bacun and some red pepper strips (NOT Coulis as described in the menu). If some person was having a tofu dish for the first time I think they would describe tofu as no flavour at all. We vegans know that you can do amazing things with Tofu. The home fries in the above dishes was the best - now that we could give 5 out 5. All of us had to go and get Sriracha and Ketchup from the counter to rescue the dishes. Coffee was too weak as well. When you go in and order on the counter and you get food delivered to your table. Should the restaurant still offer to tip on the machine BEFORE even we were served? The order did take a long time, the table not clean when we sat, no condiments on the table and coffee refills slow. An extra star for giving tons of vegan options
