After shopping for a few hours, my friend and I were feeling for a snack, so we stopped into Chuck's Deli. I have been shopping at Trainyards ever since it opened and I had never even known that this place existed, until we walked by it today on our way to Structube. The owner told us it has been open for 10 years. I'm really glad we found this place and I'm disappointed that I didn't discover this place sooner.
It's one of those hidden gems, although it's kind of hidden in plain sight. It's a deli, but also a convenience store and a dry cleaners (!) It has a very local independent business feel to it - which I love. There's seating for 16 people (8 tables of 2).
In their deli, they sell sandwiches, salads, soups, pizza, and a variety of desserts. They also had gluten-free options. Everything was reasonably priced. They had a lot of different squares (Nanaimo bars, brownies, blondies, etc.) for $2.69 each. We had such a difficult time deciding what treat to get, and the owner was really patient with us and our indecisiveness. I finally decided on a "Lobster Claw" pastry (sfogliatella riccia) ($1.99) and my friend got a cherry cheesecake ($3.99).
My pastry was not as crispy and the filling was a little dry. It tasted like it had been in the fridge for quite some time. Definitely not as tasty as fresh ones. However, I had a taste of my friend's cherry cheesecake, and it was amazing! It was rich and creamy and delicious.
The pre-made panini sandwiches looked really good. They also had things that looked like samosas, spanikopita, and spring rolls (not sure if that's what they actually were though, lol).
I have often been at Trainyards and in search of a little snack, but did not know where to go. Chuck's Deli has been there all along and I didn't even know! But now I do!
Chuck's is around the corner from the Starbucks, along the same side as Structube and Bouclair Home.
I am giving this place 4 stars despite my less-then-fresh pastry because I think the place is cool, looks really clean, and is a bit quirky, and the people there are nice. read more
