Before heading to Ottawa VIA station in the morning, we wanted to get some food to eat in the train (food in train is toooo expensive for the quality!). We were staying in Byward market area. Then I found this place - highly reputed among locals for its sandwiches using high quality deli meat and condiments from eastern Europe. They are open at 9am! Perfect! Nice little deli with one table in the store. Take-out spot. We got the following: # Turkey sandwich: Thick cut, generous turkey slices (taste like actual tender turkey breast) with lettuce, pickle, tomato, mayo, mustard, and roasted red pepper spread. Paired with smoked cheese slice. It was DELICIOUS. What set this apart from other sub/sandwich places is the use of roasted red pepper spread. It is a game changer. Bread (Kaiser) is fresh, crispy on the outside, slightly sweet and light interior, perfect for the rich meat slices. # Schnitzel sandwich: Pork schnitzel topped with sauerkraut salad and served on a toasted Kaiser. This was a bit disappointing - the schnitzel was very hard and dry. However, the sauerkraut salad and again, the roasted red pepper spread was perfect accompaniment. # Homemade Vienna cheesecake: Delicious!!! $2.99 per cake, homey taste. Fresh and light, with a hint of orange. Although I expressed negative for their schnitzel this time, I still want to rate 5. Affordablity, quality of cold cuts, selection of bread and choice of toppings and seasoning, and pleasant and efficient customer service- they do have something very special that I really want to recommend here highly. This place will be our go-to place. A must-visit in Byward!!! read more

European store located in the Byward market. This store has lots of different departments available. They have ready to go food such as perogies, potato salad, goulash. They also have a deli where they sell various cold cuts and sausages. They also sell sandwiches! They have a varieties of European goods such as jams, mustards, cheeses etc. They carry European candy (milka chocolate..yum), coffees, bread. They also have deserts such as fruit cakes. Over all, great place to pick up some euro groceries. The food is good quality. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgeable on the products in the store. read more

I've been here a few times now. I always get their Ham and Cheese Sandwich to go ($5). You get lettuce and tomatoes with it and your choice of mustard or mayo (or both). The bread is a crusty kaiser and always tastes fresh. They usually have some bread in a basket behind the counter to make the sandwiches, but when they are out, they ask you to get a bun from the place where they sell the buns which is on a wire shelf that does not look very sanitary. However, the lady puts on gloves when she makes your sandwich and removes the gloves when handling the cash. Big points for this. If they kept their bulk buns in a more hygienic place they would get even bigger points from me. They sell lots of candy and cookies from Poland and they also have lots of Polish desserts. Also deli meats. Great place to grab a tasty sandwich in the Byward Market if you don't feel like standing in line at La Bottega. read more

This place has the best deli meats, cheeses, smoked fish, pickled anything, cakes, breads, juices, candies... and now they even serve sandwiches. I'm always smiling when I leave this place with great food. Don't assume they'll have the cake you bought last time - I would call ahead to make sure. read more

Continental Deli is a cute Polish and Eastern European shop in the Byward Market and truly a hidden gem. I go there often during my lunch break and pick up a sandwich, which is always packed, meaty and delicious. They also have Kubuś, a tasty European drink that I haven't managed to find in Canada as of yet. Highly recommended, their cold cuts, salamis and cheeses are really flavorful, and surprisingly inexpensive! read more

Continental Delicatessen is a little slice of Eastern Europe in the middle of Ottawa's Byward Market. The store offers deli meats, cheeses, and packaged goods such as crackers, cookies, oils, canned fish, etc. The packaged goods are a trip - the labels are all in Polish or other Eastern European languages. There was one brand of chocolate called "Negroes", which is a marketing disaster waiting to happen. Besides the bulk items, Continental Deli also sells ready-to-devour hot soups & sandwiches, perogies and goulash. It is a little claustrophobic inside, accentuating the feeling of warmth and closeness. But, having been to Eastern Europe, it is a very authentic deli shopping experience. read more

After buying some fresh bread in the Market, my mom wants to get some meat to make sandwiches, and we found Continental Delicatessen. They have such a wide selection of deli meats, fresh meats, specialty meats, and sausages. They focus mainly on Polish fare, but they also carry other European meats, such as Italian and German sausages. They also have ready-made meals, including sandwiches, soups, perogies, cabbage rolls, and baked goods and pastries. They even have gourmet cheeses, jams, chocolates, and various sweets. We were quite surprised with the selection in such a small space. Though we were very tempted to make a larger purchase, we agreed that we'd stick to some kind of meat, and the keilbassa looked far too good to resist. We bought half a coil, which we found to be a little more expensive than a grocery store's deli prices, but there are shops with higher prices out there. The keilbassa was very flavourful, and not dry or too chewy in any way, just as we would expect from this kind of specialty store. read more

This is a Polish/Eastern European deli and fine foods vendor. Perogies, cookies, pickled items, spices, sausages, candies - this place has got it all! Staff are very friendly, they will let you sample just about anything in the deli section before you purchase. My favourites are the kabanos (long thing semi-dry sausage) and Hungarian hot sausage (thick semi-dry sausage: also comes in a mild version). They sell krówki (pronounced "krufka") which is a milky, creamy fudge that is wonderful and goes well with coffee or tea. I make sure to visit this place every time I'm in Ottawa!! It's a must for tourists and locals alike. Prices are more than fair. read more

I have purchased kielbassa, head cheese, pepperettes and another kind of cured sausage from Continental Deli. All were absolutely fresh and delicious. Each of the different products tasted different and were appreciated by kids and adults alike. All of their cured meat products are home-made according to the two ladies behind the counter -- that's right, home made. This is the original, old world, "charcuterie" without the hype and hefty price tags of the other, highly marketed foodie spots. read more
