Don't come here hungry! Wow!…read moreThis popped up when I plugged in 'butcher' near me. 15 min away. My first visit was a Sat. So busy! And for good reason. I was blown away by all the meat, the prepared goods. Burger counter. Some seating. Freezer choices. Some dried goods, bread. I got away with Chorizo, some lean ground beef and some beautiful olive oil. Is this place cheap? No! But, I pay for quality without batting an eye. Especially foodie stuff. Next round was a Tuesday aft. Ahhh. Better. I could see everything, not so packed. It was just after a long weekend so some things were sold out but I grabbed more lean beef, a chicken parm portion, a beef Jamaican patty and a stuffed potato. All were good! The chicken portion from the fresh cabinet was $11.50! More than my lb of ground beef! But it was a filling piece and fed me x 2. I love this place.

The owner who is the butcher herself and her Mom are always welcoming and helpful. You can really tell that they take pride in their business and for good reason! The butcher shop is filled with so many things to drool over and the aromas from Fiora Bread, located inside North Station, are tantalizing. It's so hard not to buy everything in sight! The prices are reasonable given the high quality of the products and they have an expansive freezer section with pre-made homemade meals (so quick and easy!). We appreciate all the different cuts of meat they have as well as variety. They do dry aged meats, too, which is worth mentioning. But it's the meat, and Lavergne's meat probably makes them the best butcher shop in Ottawa (at least that I've visited). I've been going for over 10 years and they never disappoint, with reasonable prices to boot. In particular, their sausages, pepperettes and BACON are fantastic, as are their various other cuts of fresh meat. Their store-made pork schnitzels are a favourite at home and much better than Metro (which has good meat), and Farm Boy (which dropped "normal" pork schnitzels many years ago in favour of that lime-cilantro aberration). Oh, and don't forget to try their cretons! Anyhoo, Lavergnes is a local treasure and I hope they're around for decades to come.

TLDR: Excellent butchery, market and deli. Tasty sandwiches, cool products and welcoming staff…read more Around The Block Butcher and Market opened up at this location on Feb 21, 2024. Prior to that they were on Cobden Rd (and this space on Centrepointe Dr was the Centrepointe Deli and Shake Shake Bubble Tea). The store sells raw meats, but also so much more. They sell frozen foods, deli meats, sandwiches, baked goods, snacks, and drinks too. On my first visit, I stopped by for a sandwich. Their menu changes daily, but I believe a few items are always available. I got the ATB Club Sandwich ($12.50). It had real pieces of chicken breast, thick cut bacon, lettuce and tomatoes. The default condiment is mayo, but I asked for mustard instead. It comes on a rectangular crusty bread. The sandwich was delicious, but a bit messy to eat, lol. The chicken pieces fell out of the sandwich and the lettuce is shredded, so the lettuce fell out of the sandwich too. Or maybe I'm just a messy eater, haha. My only complaint is that the sandwich was a bit small. I was definitely still hungry afterwards. So on my next visit, I supplemented my sandwich with a soup. I got the Roast Beef Sandwich ($14) and the Short Ribs and Vegetables Soup ($7). I enjoyed the roast beef sandwich less than the club because the sandwich was so oily. I don't know if they brushed the bread with oil but it was dripping oil. The soup was also on the oily side and the meat had pieces of fat and gristle. I enjoyed my first visit much more, so will likely just stick with the club sandwich. I did bring a colleague on my second visit and she got the Deli Trio Sandwich ($12), which she enjoyed. She also got the same soup as I did. They have Wagyu beef jerky! I've never seen that before. They also had lots of interesting brands and flavours of chips that I haven't seen before. They have cool drinks too, like sparkling botanical water from Collective Arts Brewery. Staff were very friendly and welcoming and ensured everyone was served in a timely manner. I wanted a smaller piece, so the person working cut me a smaller piece from the big piece of beef. The beef itself was aged well, but could have been more tender. I'm not in a hurry to try it again (I felt Saslove's meat quality was much more tender), but as for the beef's flavour, it was more pronounced. They also have a bone broth station, which I tried. My husband loves their Jamaican beef patties, which are "homemade" as opposed to the highly processed stuff sold at supermarkets. I personally find them too greasy, but they are very flakey and filled with more meat than any other Jamaican beef patty I've ever seen! Their donuts are just ok, in my opinion, nothing remarkable. If you like European-style potato salads, I think you might like the potato salad at Piggy Market. The potatoes are firmer and it's less mayonnaise-y than North American potato salad. Their prepared meals are good to grab and go, but a bit pricey for what they are, in my opinion. For example, their vegetarian poke bowl is $14.50, which is about the same price as freshly prepared and customizable vegetarian bowls elsewhere. Pricing, aside, the food at Piggy Market is generally tasty. Staff are friendly and welcoming. The shop is on a side street off the main drag.
