The Piggy Market is a cute little shop in Westboro that sells meats, cheeses, baked goods and…read moreprepared foods. It's definitely boutique-y as opposed to bargain-y if you know what I mean, lol. My husband loves their Jamaican beef patties, which are "homemade" as opposed to the highly processed stuff sold at supermarkets. I personally find them too greasy, but they are very flakey and filled with more meat than any other Jamaican beef patty I've ever seen! Their donuts are just ok, in my opinion, nothing remarkable. If you like European-style potato salads, I think you might like the potato salad at Piggy Market. The potatoes are firmer and it's less mayonnaise-y than North American potato salad. Their prepared meals are good to grab and go, but a bit pricey for what they are, in my opinion. For example, their vegetarian poke bowl is $14.50, which is about the same price as freshly prepared and customizable vegetarian bowls elsewhere. Pricing, aside, the food at Piggy Market is generally tasty. Staff are friendly and welcoming. The shop is on a side street off the main drag. It's right by Winston Square, so when the weather is nice, you can eat at Winston Square. Street parking only.

After years of searching, today I found the ultimate Jamaican-style patties in Ottawa-Gatineau. To…read moreme, The Piggy Market (bakery, deli and craft butcher shop), located in Canada's National Capital Region's Westboro neighbourhood, is making Jamaica proud! Over many, years my Jamaican born family members and I have scoured Ottawa-Gatineau, Miami and Jamaica looking for a Jamaican-style patty that can be described as 'nyam-ing' perfection. The Piggy Market delivers! How do they achieve this? I believe that it's all about their quality ingredients, mouth watering recipes, impactful blend of spices (flavourful heat) and a pastry shell that screams , "I am Jamaica Proud!" Today we visited for the first time and tried the Beef patties and Jerk Chicken patties. We're saving our next visit for Oxtail patties and any other patty menu items that we have yet to try. Every week The Piggy Market highlights a unique specialty patty on their menu. Note to the wise. Call in advance to find out what's available--what's on the patty menu that week.

A full range of steaks and cuts. Chicken tender and freshly prepared. Pork loin and a revolving range of sausages. Easily put in a special order and your wish is served. I wanted a smaller piece, so the person working cut me a smaller piece from the big piece of beef. The beef itself was aged well, but could have been more tender. I'm not in a hurry to try it again (I felt Saslove's meat quality was much more tender), but as for the beef's flavour, it was more pronounced. They also have a bone broth station, which I tried. I got the beef broth (more expensive to make than chicken), and added seaweed, scallions, and salt/pepper (to taste; I like that the broth doesn't have salt already)! It was a perfect cup of goodness on a cold day.

The Long Version: I don't love Montreal smoked meat in general, but I do like the smoked meat sandwiches at Schwartz's in Montreal, so when Smoked Royale opened up in July 2025 not far from us, my husband and I decided to give them a try. The fact that they had a grand opening special where their smoked meat sandwiches were $9.99 instead of $14.99 sealed the deal, lol. We got a sandwich to share and added fries for an additional $2.99. The sandwich came with coleslaw and a pickle. I found the sandwich ok. It was no Schwartz's, lol. The amount of meat was satisfactory and at least it was lean. I don't like fatty cuts and I always get lean at Schwartz's even though almost everyone gets medium. I found the bread had a bit of a funky smell (and no not just a rye bread smell, lol) but my husband didn't notice this. I liked that there wasn't an excessive amount of mustard. The coleslaw was creamy and ok. I do prefer a vinaigrette-based coleslaw though. I enjoyed the fries. They were crispy. My husband enjoyed the meal more than I did, so as always, it comes down to personal taste. I wasn't wowed, but if you like smoked meat sandwiches, why not check it out for yourself? Staff were pleasant, but the wait for the food was a bit long. There are a few tables to eat in. Decor is simple. Street parking only. Review #168 (2025)
