I haven't had the opportunity to get to any of those yet, but given how much I enjoyed that meat at Markie's, I'm looking forward to Montreal. Knowing full well that this could be a very filling meal, I tried to be somewhat reasonable on my order... I went for a basic lean meat sandwich and their regular order of smoked meat poutine, to share with someone else. The sandwich came out first, and the smoked meat was thinly sliced thickly stacked, lean, and flavorful with a then smear of yellow mustard on one slice of bread (was any other mustard available?) and a pickle spear. And then the poutine came. "Objects in the picture are larger than they appear." Who had any idea that a "regular" poutine would be super-sized, more than enough for 2? (Well, other satisfied customers, of course). As far as the poutine goes, I'm not sure how it compares with what you get at the poutineries downtown, but it was certainly satisfying, and the meat even more so.

Di Rienzo's is a small deli tucked away in Ottawa's little Italy neighborhood but trust me it's no secret. There's always a line of the well informed, salivating with a grin as they wait (not long mind you, they move fast). The smell here is your first clue that your in for somethings delicious, if you weren't hungry when you arrived you will be once the aroma hits your nostrils. They have a selection of Italian pre-packaged products and various snacks, as well as cold drinks to complete your meal. That said, this joint is all about the sandwiches. They'll make whatever combo of meats, cheese, and toppings you want but if your unsure just pick one of the options on the board. I almost always get the #14. It's all the delicious Italian meats you could want plus havarti, lettuce, and mayo (exchange the regular havarti for the herbed havarti if you'd like). The bread is amazing quality as well. You really can't go wrong here. They have some sandwiches in a case ready to go as well, such as the steak which I hear is amazing. The staff here couldn't be more friendly and accommodating which is no small feat for a place this busy. There are no tables so it's takeout only and It IS cash only however they have an ATM for the unprepared. Oh, lest I forget, this amazing and quality sandwich is less than 10 bucks! This spot is a real gem and if you find yourself nearby you absolutely have to try it out.

Before heading to Ottawa VIA station in the morning, we wanted to get some food to eat in the train…read more(food in train is toooo expensive for the quality!). We were staying in Byward market area. Then I found this place - highly reputed among locals for its sandwiches using high quality deli meat and condiments from eastern Europe. They are open at 9am! Perfect! Nice little deli with one table in the store. Take-out spot. We got the following: # Turkey sandwich: Thick cut, generous turkey slices (taste like actual tender turkey breast) with lettuce, pickle, tomato, mayo, mustard, and roasted red pepper spread. Paired with smoked cheese slice. It was DELICIOUS. What set this apart from other sub/sandwich places is the use of roasted red pepper spread. It is a game changer. Bread (Kaiser) is fresh, crispy on the outside, slightly sweet and light interior, perfect for the rich meat slices. # Schnitzel sandwich: Pork schnitzel topped with sauerkraut salad and served on a toasted Kaiser. This was a bit disappointing - the schnitzel was very hard and dry. However, the sauerkraut salad and again, the roasted red pepper spread was perfect accompaniment. # Homemade Vienna cheesecake: Delicious!!! $2.99 per cake, homey taste. Fresh and light, with a hint of orange. Although I expressed negative for their schnitzel this time, I still want to rate 5. Affordablity, quality of cold cuts, selection of bread and choice of toppings and seasoning, and pleasant and efficient customer service- they do have something very special that I really want to recommend here highly. This place will be our go-to place. A must-visit in Byward!!!

TL;DR/The Short Version: Deli serving up loaded sandwiches…read morein Hintonburg. A bit pricey, but tasty. The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

OVERVIEW: -Solid food, but nothing particularly special or…read moreworth going out of your way for. ARRIVAL: -I was in Ottawa from nyc for a couple days for work in September of 2022 (last year). I wrote this review then, but forgot to post it. -I came here in the afternoon on a weekday. There were a few tables occupied, but the place was largely empty. -When I was there, it was not actually open 24 hours. I could not find the hours posted anywhere online. Google maps and several other places still listed it as 24-hour. I showed up around 11pm the night before, found out they were closed, and saw the hours posted on the door. So I came back the next day. FOOD/DRINK: -I had the Reuben w/ home fries because I wanted to try some of their "famous" smoked meet. -The sandwich tasted good and was a good amount of food for the price, but overall the quality was very average. The meat was sliced super thin, had a rubbery texture, and did not have a lot of flavor. -The home fries I had with the Reuben were above average though: perfectly crispy cubes of potato with soft, fluffy insides. SERVICE: -Servers were friendly and capable. ATMOSPHERE: -It's sort of like a mix of a sports bar and a diner. There are tons of tables and booths like a diner or chain restaurant, but with decor and style more like a bar. -The only real problem with my experience here is that there were wasps flying around my table. I was sat near a window and it was a nice day so all the doors and big windows were open. I know they were wasps because there were several of them, they landed on my table a few times, and I killed one. I know there's not a lot a restaurant can do about flying bugs like that, but they were there when I arrived and they were there an hour later when I left. I don't understand how no one noticed them or why they would still sit me near a window if they did. Maybe they mistook them for flies or bees, but either way someone could have offered to move me when they saw there were so many bugs flying around my area. One of the servers even commented on them as he walked by and then opened up more windows. I assume he was trying to give the wasps more ways to leave, but it just let in more. It really ruined my experience because I worried about getting stung and about them getting on my food the whole time.
