This restaurant was an interesting one. Firstly, they close at 8 PM sharp. I think it's probably a better idea to simply order in with this restaurant vs dinning in. It also had signs outside the door as you walked in saying dine in requires a reservation which I thought was weird but can be fair. The food was decent. Finally a delicious and authentic Thai restaurant in Long Island. My favorite Asian cuisine is Thai so I'm very particular with the restaurants and I'm so glad I came across this one because it's the best on Long Island. I met the owner and I absolutely love how him & his wife are always there and so hands on in their restaurant. I hate that it's only open a few days a week and reservations only because I would eat here everyday if I could. The Thai iced tea, the spring rolls, the money bags, the fried calamari, the pad Thai, and the drunken noodle were all delicious. Suprisingly excellent. Was in the neighborhood for a grand opening Mexican place but the line was a block long and was in blustery/ drizzly 26 degree miserable queue, decided to try this Thai place diagonally across. Well, we were very pleasantly surprised. The decor was beautiful and we were greeted warmly. We tried the drunken noodles, pad thai and all were delicious with the perfect amount of heat. Ive had alot of Thai noodles and these were a couple of stars beyond. Frank the owner was so friendly. Apparently his wife is the chef. I def wanna come back to try the other more adventurous dishes. It's been years since I've visited Frankly Thai but it's still the same as I remembered (it's been over 10 years since my first visit!). The owners are husband and wife duo. The wife, Jin, is the head chef and mastermind in the kitchen. The husband, Frank (at FRANKly Thai, in FRANKlin Square) is the host, makes all the diners feel like family, and explain the Thai cuisine to anyone trying Thai food for the first time. My personal favorites are the Som Tum (papaya salad) and chicken satay - brings me back to the days when I vacation in Thailand and eat the delicious street food. My hubby's favorite is their Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodle) - you can tell they definitely cook those noodles over high heat to get that char/smoky flavor. The decor is a bit old fashioned and can use some updating. Huge village parking in the back is convenient. Very attentive servers and host. On the wall are hung framed articles of professional critics giving Frankly Thai high praise. For appetizers we ordered the Golden Bags and the Fried Pancakes w Chives. The pancakes were the best, crusty fried on the outside, almost gelatinous on the inside. Delicious without garlic or duck sauce. The Bags were shaped as such crispy outside with pork and water chestnut inside. They looked like the top was closed by a sting. This was the most aesthetically pleasant of all the dishes we had. It was also likely the one requiring the most skill to master. For the main course we ordered the Duck in Garlic Sauce. The most pricy, and a bit dry for our taste. Likely the traditional way of cooking it, just not our favorite and ranked #3 of the entrees. At #2 were the flat noodles w beef, broccoli and a sweet sauce. It would have been better if the sauce were less sweet. Next time we'll order the spicy drunk noodle. The best of the bunch was the basil fried rice. It was so delicious and delicate with egg and peppers and basil, it did not need any meat or tofu. We ordered it with roast pork. Next time we'll order as a vegetarian dish. Food is decently good (I got the Drunken Noodles), no complaints there, but nothing to rave about either. If you want something really delicious, go for a Thai iced tea. The service and ambiance can no longer be assessed because they only do takeout now. Wow! How haven't I reviewed Frankly Thai before? My wife and I frequented this place pre-COVID and it wasn't until we returned this week that I realized my review was missing. Before COVID began, we loved coming to Frankly Thai. The owners (Frank and Jin) are wonderful people and the staff has always been so kind and attentive. The place is small and BYOB, but it has a pleasant charm. We've tried a few dishes but our favorite is certainly chicken pad ginger. We tend to each order that entree and split vegetable spring rolls as an appetizer. The food is always very fresh and the flavors of the chicken pad ginger are perfect for a chilly day (or frankly even a summer day). The pad ginger tastes especially delicious soaked in the jasmine rice and ends up almost being like a ginger chicken vegetable stew. So good! When we finally decided to try this place again post-COVID, we called in our order to pick up and were told it would be less than 30 minutes - not bad for a weekend. The hours have been dramatically reduced so we were glad to call on a day/time when they were open. The pickup process is a bit odd but I know they're taking all safety precautions. Nobody is allowed inside except the staff. They even lock the doors. Instead, you have to call when you arrive (in my case there was a short line so the phone call wasn't needed) and they'll bring out the order to you and take your card (or cash) inside to process the payment and return your receipt. Because it was raining the wait outside was a bit unpleasant, but I'm thinking it'll be more of an issue in the snow or freezing temperatures this winter. Given some negative reviews this year I was concerned the food would have maybe gone downhill. Not at all. The food was just as good as we remembered. Unless you're a Thai food critic, don't let the negative reviews scare you off. This place still has the best Thai food in the area in my opinion (and Jin's family comes from Thailand so it's all authentic). Post-COVID I give a half star off because of the pickup process (curbside pickup brought to your car would be better) but still we love this place and they've been good to us so a 5 star average is warranted. Walking in there was no one at the back (where most of their customers walk thru as there's a parking lot). The tables were tightly places where chairs were touching the next tables chairs. Getting an extra chair seemed like a task for the workers there. Ordered the basic beef pad see ew which wasn't written on the menu? Anyhow, it came out fairly quickly but had asked for it with medium spice but there was no heat to the food at all. The biggest mishap was when we had asked for the side of roti even pointed to it on the menu yet the waitress brought out the entree which consists of chicken. Meanwhile the other 3 people at the table were vegetarian. We had explained she had misunderstood but she had told us to please take it. I don't think I've ever experienced that in an establishment before where they make an error and still make you pay? But my cousin said she thinks it's bc the cost of the entree would be cut from the waitress's wage and that is why she was a persistent we take it. Mind you that entree was the most expensive dish on our bill costing us $21 that no one wanted. We felt bad and paid for it bc it wasn't worth the fuss and I took it for lunch the next day. My family has been ordering from Frankly Thai for a very long time. We always loved the food . We do not live close by. It is about a 15 minute drive. About two months ago one of the items in my order was red curry with chicken. My son brought the food home and I opened mine. No chicken at all and very few vegetables. When we decided to give it another try we fold the girl who answered the phone what happened on the previous order. She said she would throw in a spring roll. When my son picked up the food they said they added more chicken to my dish. We sit down to eat and there was no rice to go with the chicken and some of the chicken was stringy. My husband and I decided to try this Thai restaurant out in Long Island since we didn't feel like driving through traffic to Flushing and because it got a "best of L.I." award. There is a convenient parking lot in the back of the restaurant, which is great because the front is located on a busy street with no stopping anytime on both sides. Service was really good from start to finish with our waiter always being there to answer questions and to refill our water glasses. I ordered the drunken noodles with beef while my husband ordered the shrimp pad Thai and a Thai iced tea. We also ordered 2 appetizers to share, which was the coconut shrimp and chicken satay. All the food tasted only okay with decent flavor but it wasn't a mind blowing foodgasm like other Thai restaurants in Flushing like Thanya Thai. I love Thai food and there's only a few places that I really enjoy in the New York area. I've heard good things about Frankly Thai over that past few years so we finally made our way over. We placed our order as take out and decided to sit and wait the 20 mins they said it would take which wasn't long at all. Everything was perfectly packed and wrapped up. I was surprised how warm everything was when we got home since we made a few more stops to other places on our way home. No need for a reheat. Here's some of the things we tried and loved: Curry puffs Chicken Satay Vegetable Pad Thai Frankly Delight Spicy basil fried rice with pork Side of the coconut rice Everything we ordered was delicious. Their Curry Puffs are smaller and softer than I'm used to but I still enjoyed them very much. I love pouring the cucumber sauce all over them and it was finger licking good. Yummy! I was surprised how much food was in the small containers; they really know how to pack the food in. The portions were not small by any means. I have been coming here for years and I am never dissapointed. Owner Frank and chef Jin,his wife,are welcoming and warm. Wait staff is always efficent and friendly. The food is auythentic and consistently terrific with layered flavors and can be customized to your heat tolerance. Freshly caught fish was a treat for our wedding anniversary last night along with flawless chicken tofu hot and sour soup...not hot as much as flavorfull of white pepper. Pad Kee Mau has been a mild go to for years; don't miss out. All appetizers always tasty. Very thoughtfully we were graced with a festive complimentary dessert to honor the occasion. We decided to try this establishment based on all the great Yelp reviews. The decor is warm and welcoming. We were a party of three and they placed us at a table for two a day added a chair for the third person. Service was good they keep our beverages filled. We started with the vegetable dumplings and chicken satay. Both were good, the satay was very small. Entrees chicken pad thai, chicken green curry and pad pug. All three were very sweet and the green curry was more of just coconut milk, the portion was also very small. Wasn't a terrible experience but I don't think I would go again. read more

3.5 stars for this visit. This was our second time at Frankly Thai. The owners are lovely people and the restaurant is inviting and clean. We started with the special appetizer, Crab Rangoon, which was hot and tasty but somewhat overpriced at $10. I went with my old standard and had Shrimp Pad Thai for my entree. The shrimp was fresh and firm, but the pad thai was missing something..maybe a little chili sauce on the side or a bit more crushed peanuts and a lime wedge would have made it more enjoyable. This was my first (and last) time eating here. I can't believe the reviews on this place. We were a party of 8...5 of which were hungry kids that just came from soccer practice. The owner noticed the kids in matching warm ups so I was hoping for some fast service and good food. We got neither. The Service: very slooooooow. The place was half full when we entered at 830pm. It took us an hour to get our entrees. More on the service later. The food: It seems like this place only has a spice rack that contains sugar, vinegar, and fish sauce. The papaya salad tasted like a pickle salad...no flavor at all. The fried rice was greasy. The curry sauce was ok, but no where near the $21 I paid for it. Now for the kicker... We ordered chicken pad Thai. It literally looked like way overdone spaghetti in greasy turkey gravy. The taste was so off putting...all we tasted was fish sauce and sugar. The chicken was big uneven pieces that tasted like it was boiled in water for an hour. Even the kids wouldn't eat it and they were so hungry I thought they would eat anything. Not a chance. So we complained to the waitress, told her exactly this and sent it back. Another waitress then approached our table a few minutes later and said "you don't like the pad Thai?" So we had to explain again. She asks us , "do u know how many recipes there are for pad Thai? Well this is ours." I was shocked. I told her yes, and we have had many different versions, but this was the only one that was inedible. She said the best she could do is take 50% of the meal off. I told her why? 100% of it was horrible. I then requested to speak to the owner. 5 mins later she came back with the bill with it totally removed. We still ended up spending over $150 there. A simple "I'm sorry" would have gone a long way and I would have chalked this up to a poor choice to have Thai cuisine and be on our way. I'm still not sure how this place had 4 stars. So after a long day of shopping out on Long Island, we were headed home. We tossed around ideas for dinner. I mentioned that we havent had Thai in a few months and lets see if there were any decent ones on the way home. Low and behold Yelp found us Frankly Thai. We had passed this place a few times and the name was catchy since this place was located in Franklin Square. =D It had very high reviews, so I made a beeline straight here for dinner and this was what I discovered. Atmosphere: This was a small and somewhat modern dining room. The large front windows allowed "light" or "night" to enter giving a nice view of Hempstead Turnpike. On the weeknight I was there, the restaurant was pretty packed. We had to wait approximate 15 minutes for a table for 2. Waitstaff: Everyone on the waitstaff was kind and courteous. Service was quick and efficient. We didn't wait long for a waitress to ask if we were ready to order. I was happy to see that with a packed restaurant, they were still able to provide really good service. Drink: Of course I always order a Thai Iced tea. Its one of the standard items I use for comparisons when i go to restaurants. Food: Appetizer: Ordered the Chai Pancake & Chicken Satay. They came out on the same plate together, but lets talk about the Chai Pancake first. These were cut into roughly 8 triangular pieces. They were crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Yummy is all I can say! Next the Chicken Satay. These could have used a bit more char and seasoning. I did taste the light "satay" flavor and wished it was a bit more. Other than that it was decently good. There was only 4 skewers, which is a slight disappointment due to the cost. Each app was $8.95. Entrée: I ordered the next standard item used for comparisons; Chicken Pad Thai - Extremely spicy. That wasn't a joke, i literally told her 4 times for very very, spicy and the last time, i said to her that its important that i get it "Thai Spicy". She acknowledged and showed me the pad where she indicated with with 4 asterisks or stars. I thank her and said, this might be my downfall. =) When the dish arrived, I noticed the color was a light beige. Normally, when i order it "Thai Spicy", it comes out a reddish brown color that scares me. I asked one of the waitresses if this was supposed to be spicy and that it didnt look like it. She apologized and said she will bring me the Thai spices to add onto it. Thank goodness, she brought me the red Thai spice powder. There was a 2nd option in a mini squeeze bottle filled with the red "Sriracha" chili garlic hot sauce. Now i did taste it before the "hotfest" began and it was OK. definitely on the light side as far as tamarind sauce goes. Once I christened the Pad Thai with generous amounts of the powder and chili garlic, it helped in the hot department, but still couldn't overcome the lightness of the flavor. The dish was cooked well. There was plentiful pieces of chicken that was cooked to perfection. I also noticed that the dish was missing a lime. I guess I'm so used to getting one with every Pad Thai i have ever ordered. I think this would have helped the brighten the dish a bit. My companion ordered a Tom Yum Shrimp Noodle Soup. So sad that this soup was extremely light. I felt they were afraid that American palettes wouldn't like the strong spicy sour notes or the lemongrass flavors, so they 'watered" it down. I was sorely disappointed. I have had some excellent Tom Yum Noodle Soups in the past 20 years which had those beautiful notes of lemon grass and that spicy pungent sour punch that hits your taste buds and this was not it. Dessert: N/A Overall: OK, so where do i start? Trying to be objective and balanced with the good, the bad, and the ugly is not easy to do. Some, if not most reviewers will just give the place a bad review and find everything that was bad and nothing positive. Lets talk about the elephant in the room first. Watering down or making food to appeal to a mass or wider audience. I don't believe in this. I feel that if they don't like it, then they should not eat it. simple as that. Now, if they ask to water it down because they cant handle it, then, that is different. Altering on a request is OK, but please don't ever change what it should taste like from the home land. Eventually, people will assume that the watered down version is the normal version and its possible we could lose that part of the food culture or it may just get muddied. Restaurants should cook it the way it was originally intended to taste. =) So, there was a few things that were good and a few misses. Overall the experience wasn't bad, but I have had better. Please feel free to check out some of my other reviews and you can see where I have had it. This is a solid option for Thai food! Went with 2 friends on Saturday night and didn't have a wait for a table. The service was friendly and our water glasses were filled every few minutes; you'll stay well hydrated at this place. I enjoyed the massaman curry with tofu and it was delicious.
