I try to seek out little quiet low key bars ever since I went to my first speakeasy. This bar was recommended by a friend that works there and makes the best drinks. It was recently opened again but most people are not aware of it. If you want to just relax in a retro bar with nice music and good people I highly recommend this place. 10/10 recommend Frank Bar. What a cool speak easy type of place! It's pretty inconspicuous with no windows ( just like a speak easy) and pretty dim when you walk in. But man did I love the vibe in this place. My husband and I sat at the bar but there were also small booths that were a little more intimate or for a little larger groups. Shoutout to Jasper the bartender! She was awesome and made us drinks that were sooo good! Good place to go if you are not looking for the regular crowded bar. The space is not big, it brings 80th's-ish vibes which I love. It is just a very nice place to go and enjoy. Not sure if Frank's will be putting up a sign one of these days...just look for the solid blue door across from Device Brew. The interior is very dimly lit and cozy. It's just one wall of seating with tables and bar seating with little room to stand. Kind of a speakeasy maybe 60s vibe. It's kind of cool. Their cocktail menu isn't extensive, but I gather the bartenders could probably make you any cocktail you wish. I ordered their signature cocktail for 12$. It was nice , not too sweet with a lovely citrus note. The other cocktails were priced at 10$ a glass. A bit on the pricier side if you ask me. They also have a CASH ONLY a policy , which is really inconvenient in this day and age. I rarely carry cash or an atm card (they do have an atm machine inside), so you gotta come prepared before walking thru Franks blue door. I didn't really get to interact with the bartenders, but they seemed nice and also very busy. The patrons were kind of all over the board, young and older, easy going , casual people. Sorry to go against the grain. I've tried it 2-3 times and disappointed each time. It's really not a speakeasy. They make below average drinks. The "high end" bourbon is locked in a cabinet just for show and they don't sell it. The bartenders skim the cash and the owner insists on cash only to pay less in taxes. Great set up. Do yourself a favor. Take your money to the Roost at Bawk. For a real cocktail in a more speakeasy style. And they actually sell their high end stuff. read more

I only been to Franks a couple of times and the experience has been friendly but also intimidating. On my groups most recent visit the staff who greeted us was welcoming. But it was when we sat down in the bar until our bartender side-eyed us when we sat down. The feeling of uncomforted and dislike centered towards my group while being helped by her. We were only coming by for a quick stop since it was my my friends birthday and we were quickly dismissed. I came her with a group of Yelp friends, and I came to the conclusion that the space is set up for smaller groups versus larger ones. Still a good time was had. It is cash only, there is an ATM inside and you're near enough Wells Fargo and Safeway if you need to pull cash. Bring quarters! I used to come here often sbout 4 months ago almost every other day because it a very cool chill environment , went back last night I was just looking to chill have a few drinks and leave it was dead when I walked in there were only a couple people there there were three people at the bar, including me when a group 5 minutes later walked in the lady who was at the bar who was including the three people to begin with got up and got behind the bar. She was drinking with one of the customers that's what I realize she actually worked there ordered a few drinks and the first drink I had and the bartender who was serving me told me that they were about do last call for cocktails she said they were still doing shots and beers so I ordered 3 more cocktails The group who had came in mind you there was only two people at the bar, including me and like six or seven seats in between me and this other person of course one of the people from the group decided to sit right next to me which is fine but he decided to literally just start young at the top of his lungs, but talking because he was a inebriated he was talking to one of the bartenders who was originally sitting down and drinking with one of the customers she was African-American and just happened to be the manager. And honestly, he was really screaming in my ear and it was giving me a headache so I scooted down two seats down and I pushed my three drinks to the other seat I was going to and one of them spilled and I apologize and just let the bartender know sorry I was getting really annoyed that the guy was yelling in my ear so I was in a rush to scoot down sorry about the spill she was super chill about it I told her I just got off of work a couple hours ago and obviously it's a bar. I'm not looking for anything quiet, but this guy was screaming in my ear knowing there was 10 seats that were open around us at the bar ( he was very loudly talking about him self to the African American manager) it was a brand new drink, and the drinks are kind of pricey, so I asked her if she could please remake it and right as she was about to answer the manager, who is talking with the guy walked past, and in the most rudest tone yelled at me NO and laughed at me and mind you I hadn't made eye contact with her. I hadn't talk to her. I didn't even know she was there until she had said that, and as soon as she said that the bartender who was serving me under her breath said sorry and I was like sorry for what I don't know who she is. Who is she like? What's going on lol. And so as I'm trying to grasp what the fuck is going on and what just happened I asked the bartender who is serving me if I can get a refund because it's a full drink and she was listening to her manager who said no by the way I was only one my first drink and in no way was I intoxicated yet I asked for a drink that was watered down with sugar so it didn't taste like alcohol so for me to even get tipsy it takes about four of those drinks, which is why I ordered three more. when I asked for the refund and explained to her like it was a full drink. There should be no reason why I shouldn't get a refund. She asked the manager who is really rude and snotty to me and obviously drunk she was sipping on a cocktail her self she said fine. I'll do that and under her breath was talking shit about me and I had no idea why she would be talking about me because I don't even know her. It was just so weird to me anyway she did the refund and later on that night at about 1150. This bar closes at 12. I guess some of the regulars come in and they stop serving cocktails at 11:30 and they wouldn't remake my drink at 11:33 these regulars both of them ask for two cocktails, and the manager gladly made those two cocktails at 11:50 when they're about to close she also down a whole shot after she's been drinking with the customers ( I physically watched her drinks In front of me which is fine but it was to the point where she was starting problems and obviously tipsy or drunk. ( this whole time Iv been in the bar I talked to no one I just minded my business she was literally starting problems for no reason. It was just a very horrible experience when I was just trying to have a chill night. I really hope the higher up manager above her. This is the type of place where the owners are trying to make a quick buck and have no interest in being in the hospitality business. Cash only - not only is it an inconvenience for the customers, it's not a sound decision operationally. No restauranteur likes paying CC fees, but it's a necessary evil, which is why 99% of restaurants take credit cards. With the money they save on not paying fees to the credit card companies, perhaps they should turn on the air conditioner so their guests don't roast to death while waiting 30 minutes for a drink because of the 1 bartender they have. The owners I believe have contempt for their customers. This place won't survive. read more

My pal Nilo and I are always looking for a good bar, so we thought we'd hit up Frank to see what they're all about. Overall, I'd call it "interesting". Generally but not entirely in a good way. The first thing we noticed when we walked in out of the bright sunshine was that we couldn't see a thing. This bar is dark, and I mean really dark. There was some lighting at the tables lining the back wall, but we sat at the bar which is mostly lit by a large aquarium at the back. They do the QR code thing for the menu and that's smart as there's no way you could read a menu. Music was louder than it needed to be but not too crazy - we didn't have to shout at each other as is the case at some places. Overall, I liked the ambiance but I'm not sure everyone will. Second thing we noticed was that the bartender was on her phone. And on it. And on it. She didn't ignore us; it wasn't too long after we sat down before she came over to get our order. When she did, though, it was a with a curt, "What can I get you", and then back to the phone while she worked on the drinks. This was unacceptable to me. A place like this requires bartenders with some personality who are willing to engage with the customers. It's possible that she had some overwhelming need to be on the phone - an issue with a child or some such. Still, it was a very bad look and her personality didn't improve later. At one point, we got a quick, "Doing ok here?", and a "What can I get you" for our second order, but that was it. It was 5:00 on a Saturday and not very busy, so it wasn't like she was slammed with drink orders. She basically did the bare minimum, service-wise, and that's not good enough in a bar like this. The drinks she made us were, on the other hand, excellent. I had a Voodoo Doll and a Sucker Punch. Both were well put together and delicious, although the Sucker Punch might be a little sweet for some folks. So overall, it's interesting. Dark, intimate space, loud music, personality-free bartender, and good cocktails. As it is, it would be 5 stars based on one visit, but one star dropped due to that bartender. But last night I brought my friends and the bartender didnt even look us in the eye. She visibly looked like she didn't want to help us. I havent got such rude service like that in a while. Dropped in last night and had a quick drink before catching a play down town for Valentine's Day! This is a dimly lit bar with no windows really. The front door is a bright colored blue and there was a old baseball game going on the t.v. I really have to say that this is actually a great place to have a conversation if you are on a date. There is a really cool old fashioned rotary phone on the wall too. It gives the place a nice old fashioned touch. I was a fan of the freshwater fish tank and all of the fish that were in it. The service is friendly here and there is a laid back vibe to a place. I wouldn't mind comming back after dinner or before a show just to catch a quick drink and talk. When you further consider it's from the owners of Arthur Henry's, another great concept I've loved for years, you have a great addition to the Sactown bar scene and a spot I'll be happy to experience countless more times. You can't help but be impressed before ever stepping foot inside. A nondescript door with the word "cocktails" marks the entrance, instantly giving whomever doesn't enter a case of fomo. Once inside, you'll find a long handsome bar, plush seating, antique TVs playing old school shows and a throwback color scheme consisting of a lot of wood and green. The centerpiece is a giant fish tank behind the bar (finding and tracking the fish inside is a great way to test your sobriety). I went with a decently priced midlevel whiskey and joined my group at one of the tables. The vibe is the biggest selling point here, although the drinks and service were both a close second. I really don't want to write this review because it might lead to more people going here... but it's not fair to the owners who took a risk and created what is instantly by favorite place to have a cocktail in Sac. First, it is hidden amongst all the hipster stuff in Ice Blocks. I stumbled on it when I was heading to Device for a beer. I acknowledge I talk crap about hipsters, but that's because I'm old. I go to Device there. I love it. And it's a hipster magnet. Anyway, this unassuming spot across the alley drew me over. It's dark inside. It's small. Nothing fancy. Drink menu is limited (although they can make anything). I had the special cocktail and then a Manhattan. Both where spot on and very reasonably priced. It's cash only, but it's nice to keep people who only use Apple Pay out. The bartender was great. Friendly but not annoying. I cleared the bar when I arrived (hopefully coincidence) and she pretended not to care, which was great. In the end it's a classic old man bar with great drinks. No SF speakeasy attitude. Laid back. Frankie boyyyy, you are a keeper! This little bar is the place to be if you want a chill night with good drinks, a good mood and good company! We had heard of this place through the grapevine and living so close to it, decided to pop in one Friday evening. With no signage, we recognized the blue door and a person checking ID's as a likely tell-all for a bar so we moseyed on through. Side note, the man checking ID's was very friendly and welcomed us. Upon entering, Frank's is small, narrow, and dimly lit but very casual and relaxed. We loved the blue glow of the fish tank and the lights hanging over each table. We quickly found a table for the five of us and once looking over their smallish menu, decided on the bar special and most of us ordered it (blushing corpse). I highly recommend it! Served in a martini glass, the best way to describe this drink would be like a citrusy/cherry flavored sipper; you can taste the alcohol (which included absinthe and something else I can't recall) but it was so smooth and delicious! I'd order that any day! As we are so close to the Ice Blocks, we will definitely be coming here more often. The only "negative" I would say, however, is that it is CASH ONLY but they offer a fee-free ATM (which btw even though the ATM doesn't charge, your bank still might for not using the banks ATM).
