I've been a big fan of the Fractured Prune since spending a summer in Ocean City. There are few things better than freshly made donuts, and there are even fewer places that make them to order. So I was thrilled to find one here in Frederick. Until I walked in. The place is filthy. A true donut dive. This is a real shame because the store is so small that a thorough cleaning wouldn't take much time or effort. So I find it disturbing that no one who works there seems to care about cleanliness. If no one can be bothered to even sweep the floor and wipe down the dirty tables, how much effort is put into cleaning the kitchen equipment? Or washing their hands? Or practicing safe food preparation? Where's the pride in ownership?? The risk a successful company takes in selling franchise rights is the potential loss of control. They can no longer guarantee the quality of their product or service, and there's a chance that the company's reputation in a new market will suffer. The franchise owners have a duty to carry on the tradition of excellence that made the company successful in the first place. It's a mystery to me why no one has stepped in and demanded higher standards from the owners of the Frederick location. Fractured Prune donuts are fantastic, but there's no way I'd ever set foot into this grungy place again. read more

These are freshly made and piping hot right out of the fryer. Get the OC Sand flavor, it's the best. The more crazier flavors (e.g. Snickers) are too sweet for me, but OC Sand is just right. As Homer Simpson would say mmmmm ... donuts. read more

Really love a hot, fresh donut. This place has a great, dense donut and you can top it with whatever you want. My daughter and I went in on Sunday and bought a dozen, and did a little taste test- they were all good. If you don't like super sweet donuts, just choose your own topping and tell them to go easy on the glaze. They pretty much will do whatever you want. I do have one (semi-picky) thing that will make me pause before visiting again. This particular location was not very clean. The trash cans were so filthy I didn't want to touch the tops, the floor was dirty, the walls were dirty... it definitely looks the worse for the wear. read more

As far as donut shops go, this one is great. If you are like me and you cant stand the bland stale-ness of dunkin, and krispy kreme is far to "played out", then you should try the Fractured Prune. Beware however, these donuts are completely capable of putting a normal human into a sugar induced coma. Get one or two. Let someone else attempt to get a dozen. If you try, you'll eat all of them in your car in the parking lot sobbing to yourself. There aren't enough napkins in the world to wipe your dignity up off the floor of your car after that. read more

Let's just talk about the quality of donuts. This place is amazing! Freshly made several flavors to choose from that can accommodate wide varieties of taste. I always buy this as treats for my staff, doctors office and to my friends, neighbors and family. The store it self is not a good place to hangout. Delicious donuts! They are made to order and served hot out of the fryer so there's just no competition from any other donut shop in the area. I think they're $2.50 each, so more expensive than Dunkin or the grocery stores but nowhere near as high as Glory. I like all of the flavors I've tried but some of my favorites are the banana nut bread, oc sand, and chocolate chip peanut butter. It's hard to not get a half dozen and eat then all in the car instead of taking them home to share! The location is a little out of the way in a dumpy strip mall but really it's only a couple of minutes from downtown. Definitely stop there if you're heading to/from the MVA and therefore are in a bad mood! read more

Ah, the Dell business model of mass customization/build-on-demand applied to donuts. It's a beautiful thing to a business geek. Like Dell (in the early days, before they offshored customer service), the resulting freshly-fried and custom-topped treat is a darn good donut. Perhaps even a great donut. Unlike Dell, the custom made donut doesn't seem to rely on pricing to drive demand. Compared to your traditional (inventoried, commodity priced) Dunkin D model, the Prune's donuts seem smaller and a bit more expensive - but the donut experts in the office suggest this may be due to a rise in raw materials (wheat) affecting the whole industry, rather than a disproportionate premium at the Prune. It will be interesting to see if the Prune can stay with it long term, or they fade-out fad-like. It strikes me as very interesting that the nice young guy behind the counter making the donuts (who says he's been there since the store opened) still only weighs 125 lbs or something. Seems like I everyone I've ever seen working a Dunkin D is pushing 200 or more. I wonder what that says about the donut? (I don't think it means the Prune's are made out of oat bran and alfalfa sprouts). read more

I was visiting my old hometown from San Francisco and really wanted Dunkin Donuts because there isn't ONE in the whole state of California. Yet, my aunt and uncle said this was THE place to get donuts in Frederick, so we went one morning to get a dozen. First, the donuts are reasonably priced. Less than $10 for a dozen. Anyone who complains about that hasn't been in the real world for awhile. The kid behind the counter was really nice and helpful too. The donuts themselves though are way to sweet for me, for breakfast anyways. While it seems cool to see all the toppings and options, this really is more of a dessert place (to me anyways). And while I like cake donuts, these are way too sweet and doughy. It was all just too sickeningly sweet and way too much sugar for the early morning. I wish we had gone to DD instead and come here after dinner one night instead. Oh wait, you CAN'T because they close at 2 PM! Really, I bet if they extend their hours they will do even better. They will attract people like me, someone who loves dessert after a meal. read more

I only wish they hadn't closed ALL of the Virginia Fractured Prunes. Alas, such is life. And when life gives you a lemon, you ask a coworker to grab you four Fractured Prune Lemonade flavored donuts (Actually, I got the Blueberry, Ms. Prunella, Morning Buzz and the O.C. Sand). That order of four quickly turned into an order of 24 once my coworkers caught wind of the Prune run. She brought them in and they were almost instantly teleported to our bellies leaving only sticky hands and fond memories. I ate all of mine that morning and my girlfriend tasted her anniversary donut (O.C. Sand) several hours later (which does rob it of pipping hot amazingness) and said it tasted a lot like a sopapilla. Also, the prices aren't half as bad as people make it out to be as long as you buy them by the dozen. On Tuesdays, for example, they are approximately 70cents/donut if you get them in dozen quantities. Go here if you want tasty doughnuts and a reason to brush your teeth. read more

AH-MAZING! Cider donuts are my go-to fried pastry (meaning, I prefer more cake, less goo) when it comes to fried dough. Others on here complained about these donuts being too sweet.... and I'd agree, some are. My husband had the Peanut Butter Cup which was definitely more of a dessert item. I had the French Toast and...mmmmmm..... it was just right! The donut was fresh and warm and the maple glaze/cinnamon sugar combo was not overly sweet. Next time, I'll try it with an egg! I should have known it would be bad when I walked in to an empty store and the guy looked so disinterested in helping me. They had a sign touting breakfast sandwiches so I tried one: would have been better at McDonalds. Everything about this place was bad I should have left when I thought about it right before ordering. Took a bite of my fake egg on rubber bagel sandwich, threw it in the trash and left. Maybe the donuts are good but they aren't displayed and seemed to be out of the everything. (03/28/2012) Good donuts, best when they're warm and right out of the fat fryer. Love the crazy mix of glazes and toppings, and you can mix-and-match to your heart's content. The glazes are pretty powerful in flavor (fruit flavors like candy, candy flavors like, well, candy). Donuts themselves are a dense cake, can become a little dry when cooled. In general, these donuts make my teeth ache, but I know others with greater sweet tooths than mine who love them. read more

So, I ordered their Trail Mix donut and added the maple glaze. Either the young lady used the regular glaze or their maple flavored glaze is the weakest maple flavor of all the donut shops I have ever had in my 47 years. I even asked since I didn't see the light brown color of maple, but she assured me that it was on there, but when I ate it on the way home, I was let down. Of course the actual donut was nice and crispy and that was the only reason I gave 3 stars. Next time if the customer says something, maybe add a little more so they feel they got what they paid for. read more

If I could give this a zero I would. The service was terrible. I had to repeat my order 3x to someone saying are you sure. When I did get my order (and half of it went on deaf ears because it didn't show, but a least I wasn't charged for it) it was greasy and mushy. Ugh. The whole place is dirty and gross. I arrived 15 min. before they closed and I was receiving looks and an attitude that I shouldn't have come in and I'm interrupting the cleaning process. We went to Fractured Prune this morning at about 9:30. It was busy, but not too busy to serve us. The staff was friendly and prompt. However, what struck us was not the quality of the food or the service; it was the cleanliness of the place. The floor was filthy. People were smoking right in front of the doors, and the parking lot was littered with both used butts and half-finished butts. This was our first time here, having come based on recommendations from friends, and we had high expectations. My youngest child, two years old, accidentally dropped her milk. I notified the staff, and a worker quickly came over and said it was no problem, they'd clean it up. I expected a mop or something. Nope. The worker put down paper napkins that she grabbed off the counter where they have utensils, put them on top of the milk (which was in a pretty good-sized puddle), and left them there as we ate. Ewww. I was also taken aback by the filth on the counters in the kitchen, the stickiness of the counters and tables, and how the staff didn't seem to wash their hands. I don't think I'm coming back. My kids didn't really like the donuts, either. read more

Donuts are good but the place is disgusting. If you don't mind eating in complete filth then this is the place for you. I'm not sure why the health department hasn't stepped in. This place is disgusting! First off, I have been a fan of Fracture Prune donuts in Ocean City for a long time. And I used to be ok with the location in Frederick, but I think it may have changed owners or something because the last couple of times have been enough to turn me off to donuts forever. This location looks like nothing has been cleaned in at least a month and the toppings are all uncovered. When something gross gets in them they just dig it out with a fork and keep rolling. There is this older guy that works there now, and hes been there both times. The last time he walked around first touching all this disgusting stuff, emptying the trash, wiping down the counter with a very unsanitary looking rag and THEN proceeded to put on a glove (with the gross unclean other hand touching it) to make the donuts. While making the donuts, he kept rubbing his GLOVED hand over his jeans! The side of his jeans was all covered in powdered sugar junk so obviously he's been doing this frequently. In between nearly every donut, he would just wipe his hand off on his dirty jeans and then proceed to pick up another one. The donuts went straight in the trash when I got home. I would've asked for my money back but I think I was just in shock while there and will chock it up to a learning experience. read more
