I was expecting a bit more after some people built it up a bit, but the food wasn't the greatest. I got a grilled chicken sandwich, not their specialty, and it was nothing special. The chicken didn't seem to be very good quality. Matzah ball soup was okay, but not the best either. I went back one other time and I forgot what I had - bad sign. It was some sandwich that was okay, maybe tuna w/ red peppers? If you like old people though, they have TONS here. All types too, the super old, very old, and just regular old. This place has really gone downhill. Went for lunch with a friend. We ordered the potato pancakes, the stuffed cabbage, and the spinach & feta knish. All were disappointing. The potato pancakes were probably the worst. They were just mashed potatoes formed into a pancake and fried. That is NOT how a real potato pancake is made. Real potato pancakes incorporate shredded potatoes, onion, a little flour, and possibly a little egg to hold them together. The stuffed cabbage was pretty much tasteless. The spinach & feta filling in the knish was good but the knish pastry was totally wrong. Frankly I couldn't tell what it was -- something thin and white -- not what a real knish is like. I was really excited for some deli food when I visited Fox's recently and left a little disappointed. The matzah ball soup I ordered was not served as I know it, their take on the soup is two matzah balls in chicken broth, no vegetables, noodles, etc.. I I also had the Reuben which was good. All I can say is "wow" I really enjoyed this place! The sandwich I had was absolutely fantastic! I would tell you the name of it but can't remember as there were so many things and unique names on the menu. The person I was with said the food was always good and they had never had a bad meal. The hours are short so make sure you check them prior to heading out for it. The service was really good as well, quick, attentive and friendly. Fox's is incredibly authentic. From the diner-style table service to the deli counter ordering, it's one of a kind in Rochester. This throwback has been serving generations for, well, generations. Had lunch here today for the 1st time in many years. The food was very good. We had the soup, sandwich's and strudel. The friendly service from Pam K was excellent. Bought bread,cold cuts and baked goods at the counter on the way out. Will be back soon to try out some of the other choices on the menu. A real NY deli right here in Rochester. read more

This is a great spot for lunch and my biggest complaint is that they aren't open for dinners! I've had the pleasure of dining here and ordering takeout on many occasions over the years since my office is very closeby. This review will focus on the vegetarian and fish items, but my coworkers rave about the reuben and everyone loves ryeman sandwiches. The "Cheesy like Sunday Morning" grilled cheese is just dynamite if you like mustard and onions. It's the perfect hearty meal for a cold winter day in Rochester, especially if you visit on a Friday and order a cup of the clam chowder which is really excellent. One of the best chowders in the area along with the Crab Shack (not Joe's Crab Shack). The vegetarian sandwiches are all really good, the salads are plentiful, and the desserts are fantastic especially the cannoli! The staff are really friendly and quick since this place is accustomed to dealing with the lunch rush. You can eat a sit down meal here and be out the door within 30 minutes, although if you arrive at noon during the rush hour, you may sometimes have to wait for a table. read more

I was in the area at an appt and had to hurry to pick something up for lunch to go back to work so I checked in with Yelp and BAM! Fox's, which is a place I'd wanted to try for some time! In a non descript strip mall, with a tiny store front, I was completely surprised when I walked in and found not only a deli but a seating/dining area of booths in the back. It was about 1:30 pm on a Thursday afternoon and they were doing a brisk business both in the seating area and in the take out deli area. I placed my order to go: I'm in a NYC style deli and felt I HAD to go traditional so I ordered the NyNy, hold the Russian dressing (this was under the hot sandwich area of the very large board listing all their offerings) and I'd heard I shouldn't miss out on the knish's so I opted for the spinach and feta of the two choices that day. OMG... the NyNy, I assumed, would be grilled like a Rueben but it was warm corned beef with slightly sweet slaw on regular rye bread and it was out of this world delicious!! The slight sweetness of that slaw was just an amazing accompaniment to the corned beef and that rye... just amazing. That knish? Warm, soft dough filled with spinach and feta that I couldn't stop eating in the car!! My order came out super quickly even though it was so busy and the people were very friendly. THey had a case full of sweets.. cookies, pastries, etc In front and after I placed my order and paid I was mad I didn't make a few choices out of there. I cannot wait to go back and try more items! There were a few items I had no idea what they were (I'm sure they are probably typical Jewish deli staples) and am dying to be able to sit and take my time and ask...go try that corned beef people!!! Had lunch here today, terrific food. I had the egg salad sandwich on multigrain bread and a cup of the cold borscht with sour cream. My son ordered clam chowder and a chicken salad on rye with bacon on top with caramelized onions. Everything was wonderful, the egg salad reminded me of my mother's cooking, everybody was friendly including a very pleasant waitress. read more

I've been to Fox's a few times. Great place to go to satisfy your craving for a reuben sandwich. The matzoh ball soup is bland, and the knish is also pretty uninspired. But the reuben is very solid and so is the New York, New York featuring corned beef, pastrami, coleslaw and russian dressing. Wash it down with a loganberry phosphate soda. read more

Stopped by while riding the Erie Canal with my friend Gretchen. She said it was the best deli in Rochester. Boy was she right. Had a Reuben sandwich that was piled high with meat. The toasted rye was great. All in in it took two hands to hold this monster. Then I teased the waitress about the lack of meat. She said someone recently finished a double sandwich. Hard to believe. Also ordered a cup of Dads home made chowder and again stepped in it as I asked if "Dad really made it" our waitress a lovely young girl informed me that her dad did in fact make the soup. It was delicious. Next time I get to Rochester will head to Fox's. A great place. read more

Stopped in today for a rare treat. Had the corned beef Reuben and a pint of Matzo Ball soup which was outstanding! The menu offers a wide variety. Service was quick and friendly. Many places pretend to be authentic neighborhood delis but Fox's is the real deal. The only to Fox's is their limited hours, 11am-3pm Monday through Saturday. read more

My first time visiting the fox deli and it will be my last. The server was very rude interrupting me four times while I tried to order a cheeseburger she was so rude I asked to speak to the manager or owner. She sent the owner over when I explained to about her service he said maybe she is having a bad day. I guess they think it is ok to treat their customers badly because they are having a bad day. I also have to say I'm a big fan of the names of these sandwiches. Fox's is a regular stop for us that is ALWAYS enjoyable. They are famous for their Rueben, but don't overlook the other sandwiches. I have recently been trying others and have yet to be disappointed. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is because they are selfishly open so few hours!! They need to expand their hours and share their perfect restaurant and deli with so much more of the world. The service is super friendly, I was even offered a free brownie when I'd mentioned I'd never had one of theirs. How gracious! Have been wanting to try this place for a while based on great Ruben reviews. My girlfriend and I were both disappointed. The vegetable soup was so bland and pretty sure they used canned vegetables. I had the Ruben which was just ok. The real issue I had was the low quality of meat. It was also really small for $10. She had a turkey Ruben. The turkey was good but the sandwich as a whole was average. Not sure how this place gets such good reviews based on the average food and pretty high prices. read more

Loved it!! I knew that had been in business a long time and I see why. Everything was homemade and super tasty. I took my parents there and they both really enjoyed their lunch. Best deli in town that I have found since moving here. Super friendly staff, 90% older women. They are there because they want to be not because they have to be which is always a plus. Sandwiches are great, for some reason I always want to try something new but end up getting the same thing. Lots of options. French fries are good too. This was our first trip to Fox's and we've heard a lot about this place over the years so we were ready to enjoy a great lunch...When you walk in the door it looks and feels like the 1970's which isn't a bad thing just an observation...Straight ahead the deli counter and the desert case, a right turn takes you into the dinning room, which is bare bones except for the giant American flag on the back wall...The waitress was very friendly and she had some recommendations for us to consider for our sandwiches...We also ordered a side of kosher pickles and shoestring fires with a side of ranch dressing dip...The pickles were amazing, crisp, salty and just the right amount of garlic, probably the highlight of the meal...The sandwiches although tasty enough lacked in the meat portion and at $10-$11 dollars a piece you might think you would get a pile of meat on each...I took the meat from one side of the sandwich and put it on the other to make a proper portion sized sandwich, so that should tell you about the lack of the meat portion...We had desert of a warm apple strudel of sorts, which was as dry as a church fart...This needed a dollop of whip cream or creme fresh and it would be 100% better...So all in all it was just okay and nothing I would be going back to in a hurry... read more

Oy vey. From the reviews, we were expecting a Jewish-style deli like one would find on either coast. We were disappointed to find that this place has ordinary food and is nothing special, and if weren't for the types of soups, one would never know it was a Jewish deli. No hand-cut, juicy, black Romanian pastrami here. No luscious, moist corned beef. No twice-baked rye with caraway seeds. No plates of half-sour pickles. These are plain cold cuts served with runny Russian dressing, tasteless coleslaw, and some stale chips on the side. You'll find no balance to the cabbage soup, but if you like sour without the sweet, then this is the soup for you. I sent it back and got the matzo ball instead, which was the highlight of our lunch. The tuna salad was gummy and tasted tinny. The staff are pleasant and the service is okay, but this place is otherwise boring. read more
