The CM in ROC said to me, "Ok so I have some things in store for you, but what's like something you would want that you couldn't get at home?" And no joke - I was like it's not going to be exciting for you, but I would straight up DIE for a deli sammie and a bowl of matzo ball soup. She almost fell of her chair and was like wait - ALL YOU WANT IS THAT?! We have a jewish deli like on every corner. Enter - Fox's. I've been told that Fox's is the best of the best in ROC and it was. It was a spiritual experience sitting there sharing a bowl. Next up we ordered a knish. The standard is potato. We upped it and went for the bacon/cheddar knish. This one was PIPPING hot and the pastry was very well done. It tasted exactly like I've always dreamed. Which honestly kind of pissed me off, because now I will never have it again. Dang you Fox's! Last up we split a BLT and the Pastrami. This is where this spot looses a star for me. I am a fan of pastrami but I wanted it to be so much more than this. This pastrami was sliced uber thin, and what I love about pastrami is the thick juicy saltiness and I felt like that is what was missing here. I've gone to Fox's off and on since I was a teenager. And, I always loved the food. But, I hadn't been there in years, so I decided to go there today with friends. Well, the food is still good, delicious. But, I'm only giving them a three-star rating because the prices are outrageous! Gone are the large, very thick deli sandwiches I remember, replaced by smaller, much thinner sandwiches. (My sandwich certainly didn't look as plentiful as the ones shown on their website.) And, so expensive! I mean, $11.00 for a small Reuben with some potato chips on the side?! There wasn't even a pickle slice on the plate. And, not nearly as much corned beef on the sandwich as they used to serve. (They claim to have the best Reuben in town. It's good. But, the best? Not so sure about that. I can go around the corner to Quimby's and get a bigger, delicious Reuben with fries and a pickle for $10.50.) $6.50 for a SMALL (and I mean small) cup of chili?! $3.00 for a pickle?! Certainly, they serve other items with prices that seem normal (although, maybe they're small portions?). But, as far as the deli sandwiches go, it seems they've gone the route of so many other restaurants--higher prices and smaller portions. Don't even get me started on the extremely pricey dessert Not the deli I remember. Disappointing. Update 1/26/20: If you want to try a good Reuben, try Original Steve's Diner. For that classic Jewish Deli feel, you may want to stop into Fox's. Reminiscent of the Jewish Delis of NYC, you will have options of soups and sandwiches that will satisfy most appetites. I started with the matzo ball soup. Actually my first time having it. I must admit, it just tasted like a basic chicken stock with two solid balls of a chewy dough. If I was sick, I think this would be great as it is bland but as a meal, I was not a fan. The Oy Vey sandwich was delicious though. The sandwich was filled with chicken salad and sweet onions. This has the sweet, salty, savory combination of flavors. I barely could finish the sandwich as Fox's didn't skimp on the filling. The staff was very attentive and our water glasses were never empty. I have passed Winton Place and never thought about exploring it. Somehow, when looking for deli in Rochester I came across Fox's but could never place exactly where it was. I will never forget. This is a storefront deli and restaurant. There is a large deli counter that you see when you enter the store, then a sign that says the hostess will seat you. There are rows of tables for 4 and tables for 2 running the length of the restaurant. The place was full when I came in around 12:30 and the crowd just kept coming. I was seated immediately and my waitress was there with water and a menu in a few seconds. The menu is loaded with pastrami, corned beef, brisket and turkey sandwiches of various combinations along with soups and side dishes. It is Jewish Deli heaven. Along with dozens of sodas you can also buy wine or beer with your lunch. I wanted a simple pastrami on rye with Russian dressing. It came very quickly after I ordered it with a side of chips. It is open Monday through Saturday; 11:00 - 3:00. Treat yourself. I will certainly be back. read more

Probably one of the best Reubens I've ever had. Their hours are very specific but it's clearly because they do what they do excellently and there's no need to do it for any longer. I got the pastrami Reuben while my girlfriend got the regular and we immediately understood the Reuben hype that we had heard from the neighborhood. I tried breakfast at Fox's deli today. Not a big menu but very reasonably priced. A couple good surprises, pastrami as one of the meat options and latkes as the potato choice. Both were delicious, they crisp the pastrami on the flat top grill creating a nice mix of crispy and chewy. The latkes were also cooked on the flat top, which I prefer, but they usually deep fry them. Next time for comparison I will get one from the fryer and one from the flat top. If you like the restaurant for lunch, then you have to try it for breakfast. read more

Impressed! This is a legit deli, hands down. The "Rachel" sandwich (a Ruben without sauerkraut, subbed with coleslaw) was really great. What I really went for though was the clam chowder...which I have missed so much from home...and it was quite fine, creamy, buttery with lots of clam--- the best I have had in Rochester. Very brisk business, it was crowded with about a 10 minute wait for a table, and a little pricey, but worth it. read more

I'm sorry for not taking pictures but we were so hungry we just dove in. First let me say not busy like in the old days. We arrived about 11:30 or so and only 4 other diners were there. There were 3 of us and we ordered an order of Latkes cabbage rolls 2 New York New Yorks and 1 Rueben. We also ordered a side of potato salad and a side of macaroni salad which according to the waitress were excellent. Having had their potato salad before we agreed! Latkes we're flavorless, cooked nicely but thank goodness for the salt shaker and sides of sour cream and applesauce. Cabbage roll was singular and tasty but the sauce has changed. It was thick. The Mac salad although containing onion and celery lacked flavor. And the potato salad was just disgusting. Peels in the salad and it tasted like potato water and potatoes. The sandwiches on the other hand were epic, very good! Such a shame for a restaurant that was such an institution with great food for so long. read more

The people are quick to take your order, very personable and friendly, and efficient when it gets crowded for the lunch rush. This is a GREAT place to grab a sizable sandwich of high quality. I really enjoy the names they've given to each sandwich, and will be standing waiting for my order and laughing at the menu as I read through. Their signature for the sandwich is pretty much serve it on rye with coleslaw and russian dressing. It certainly does the trick! I also really enjoy their option for an apple instead of chips. When my best friend Bridget took me to this place, I thought that I had died and gone to (Jewish delicatessen) heaven. This place is everything that you love about those expensive NYC diners, without the part that hits you in the wallet. They've got everything from soups, sandwiches and knishes to rice pudding and more! They've got delicious favorites like Reubens and things that you might have to be dared to try...like tongue and chopped liver! Although the place looked a little bit desolate from the outside, it was bustling and packed inside. When I went, my friend and I both order soup and knishes. My lentil was a bit disappointing. I felt like it was cooked without any seasoning and not being a salt person, I didn't feel inclined to add any. Our knishes were also kind of bland. The wife and I went to Fox's for lunch. We sat down to eat and I was so fascinated with the decor I didn't get a chance to read the entire menu which I think maybe a bit too long. Wife was ready to order and I panicked and picked the smokin Joe and let me tell you that was the best sandwich I've ever had in my entire life. I stoped here yesterday on my way home to Buffalo after watching my daughter run in her meet at St John Fisher College. I remembered eating at Fox's Deli over 50 years ago when I was here to watch the US Open at Oak Hill. I'm always looking to feed my love of Jewish deli that sometimes my expectations are much too high which leads to disappointment. I started with a cup of chicken kreplach and then a corn beef on rye with a schmear of chopped liver. I had read that the restaurant had new owners and I give them an A for effort as the restaurant business is tough and the Jewish deli business could be toughest of all with assimilation and people such as me are aging out. All I will say is that Rochester is not Manhattan and Fox's is not The 2nd Ave deli or Katz's but it did satisfy my Jewish deli craving. At least Rochester has one unlike my hometown of Buffalo that can't even support one. I wish the new owners nothing but good luck. read more

Fox's has been in Winton Place plaza for as long as I can remember. It's a nice, comfortable little place, with sweet little old ladies for servers. The food is pretty good, but nothing really stands out as spectacular or something that I simply must have again. Most recently, I visited and had the reuben and the stuffed cabbage. All of the ingredients of the Reuben were great, but the bread was where it lost points for me. The bread was buttery and very well toasted (not burnt or anything, just very crispy), but I couldn't even tell it was rye bread (was it? I'm still not sure). The corned beef in the sandwich was good and plentiful. The stuffed cabbage was very good, the broth it was in was very tasty, and the thing was stuffed full. I'm not usually one to complain about filling to wrapper ratio, but I think it would have been even better if they split the filling in two and made two rolls instead of one giant one. Lots of baked goods that look really good, but I haven't tried any yet. I will be back to try some other menu items. read more

I can only give this review based on takeout. I have not been past the front door. Based on my experiences, they have a nice, big selection of deli sandwiches, salads and soups. The workers are extremely pleasant and helpful. I can tell you that they have a great Caesar salad! Anyone who loves Caesar's as much as I do can understand how you can rate a restaurant on their Caesar alone! Not all of them are created equal! Our lunch was really good today. Be aware that a colossal sandwich is like a regular deli sandwich at most places so you really have to go with it. The corned beef was lean and sliced thin. the fries are great and an order is big enough for two. Our server was incredible. I will make a point to go there more often! read more

Oh, how I wish they had longer hours! I haven't been there in forever (ONLY because I don't work near there anymore and the hours are such that it's hard for me to get there), but when I worked nearby I regularly went there for lunch. Rochester really needs more good Jewish food like this. I loved everything I had there and over time I had the Egg Cream, the Matzo Ball Soup, Kreplah, the Reuben, the Slaw & Order, the chopped liver (SO GOOD), latkes, stuffed cabbage, tuna, and a black & white cookie. They are pretty quick for a lunch break too! The ONLY downside I ever experienced there was in relation to one of the team members, a woman with short hair and a slight voice. I asked her if the chopped liver was chicken liver. She looked horrified and grossed out. Her eyes got huge and she shook her head and said "I have no idea, I'm a vegetarian." Right on for vegetarians - I'm cool with that! And hey, you don't know an answer to a questions? That's cool too, let's find out! But... I love this place. When I am here I feel like I am at home. Not only is the food delicious, but there is something for everyone. Mostly it follows traditional Jewish deli fare, but also ventures into some nontraditional items as well. There are daily soup specials, and always vegan options. For the adventurous there is chopped liver, pickled tongue and stuffed cabbage. The blintzes and potato pancakes are always a treat, and you can never go wrong with the hot pastrami sandwich. They even make their own house roasted brisket, which also makes a delicious sandwich. For years they have been voted the best Reuben sandwich in the area, and I agree. They are only open for lunch, which is a shame because I would love to eat this food in the evening and perhaps even brunch, but what is there is well done well enjoyed and thoroughly enjoyable. This is a really cute Jewish-turned-modern restaurant that is perfect for a business lunch. Meaty sandwiches, fantastic soups, and fast service. All meals are disguised in pop culture references and puns that your quirky Jewish uncle would love. Names like "Everybody Loves Ryeman," "Silence of the Hams," and my personal favorite: "Slaw and Order," add an uncanny humor to your lunch options. Slaw and Order was a turkey, pastrami mix with cole slaw and Russian dressing. Meat was plentiful and the seemingly awkward combination worked to the sandwich's advantage. French fries are also worth a try, but you'll have to pay $3.25 extra, because you can't sub them in for chips. The cabbage soup is also a classic. Fox's has a HUGE selection of hot & cold sandwiches (including burgers) - along with a slew of classic Jewish deli small dishes, soups and desserts. I had the Risky Brisket - the caramelized onions were so good. The serving was huge, and it comes with chips. Of course, we didn't shy away from the side of Cajun fries - which were cooked perfectly! Tough to find. Tucked in a plaza. Decor has a cool retro feel, which I really liked. Foodwise- I ordered a cabbage role. Wow it was delicious! Very similar to what my Polish grandma used to make, so I enjoyed those quite a bit. The best part was the bread that accompanied the cabbage roll... a delicious Rye.... ended up soaking up the cabbage roll juice with it. For my entree, I had the Reuben. I have had better, but it was still good and totally edible. It is piled high and served with chips. The corned beef itself wasn't as flavorful as I have had in other places and it was definitely lacking in thousand island dressing. Really liked the caricature drawings on the walls.. particularly the one of Donald Trump. Wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but enjoyed it well enough. read more

Solid Jewish style deli in Rochester... started with the "family recipe" chopped liver ap - it was REALLY good, nice liver flavor, finely chopped egg, a great starter for this kinda place.
