Visited Fox Tail Cider & Distillery on a Saturday early afternoon with a group of five as part of the Hood River Fruit Loop. The Distillery is right off of the loops main road and features a gravel parking lot with ample space. Per its name, the distillery is known for its ciders and its fruit distilled spirits. Our group opted for one flight of cider, and one flight of spirits. For the spirits, we got two fruit vodkas, a gin, and an apple brandy. All four had a nice fruit essence on the nose. The vodkas tasted as you would expect and the gin had a semi sweet, lightly herbaceous taste. My favorite was the apple brandy which was sweeter with a more discernible apple taste. I did not drink too much of the ciders, but the others at the table expressed that they did enjoy them. They were light and not overly sweet, which is a plus for me, as I feel many ciders are too sweet. The Knotty Cherry was my favorite cider I did take a crowler to go of this flavor the last two visits. They had more ciders that I didn't care for than ones I actually did! Although I didn't like some of the flavors, it's always fun to try all the different ones with my husband and compare our tastes. They have a few food items available to snack on while you have a cider inside or outside. The pretzel with cheese and mustard was ok. We really enjoy trying different hard ciders, so we made sure to stop here while visiting some other places along the "fruit loop." They have a small tasting room inside, along with tables & chairs out on their front patio. The patio is right off the parking lot and they are near the busy road, so you'll probably be listening to cars whizzing by, but if it's a nice day it's still enjoyable to sit out there. We shared a flight of 5 ciders out on the patio. Their ciders were good, with a few interesting flavors like lemon basil and melon. Fox Tail Cider is part of the Fruit Loop so we made a quick stop to sample cider and spirits made on the farm. It is family friendly with dogs allowed on the patio. We tried a flight and loved the variety. There was not a bad one in the bunch. I especially enjoyed the Rhuby Red and Butter-Tail. The Rhuby Red had a strawberry, rhubarb and apple taste that was lightly sweetened. The Butter-Tail was also semi-sweet with a caramel, graham and apple taste. I am not a huge drinker, but I do love the sample aspect of places. Here we went in and grabbed a 10 pack and a couple bottles to go. They have gone 10 for 10 on this. All the flavors were real good, and even the full sweet weren't too sweet. I prefer a dry or semi dry and they had some real tasty ones that fit the bill. I knew that everyone enjoys hard cider. I love whiskey so it was a good idea to stop and try a cidery out while on vacation. We arrived and entered a large line. Chose any 5 ciders that we wanted and I got a pear brandy that was sensational. I did check out the distillery equipment. Small pot still they had in the back. Appears they only have a couple whiskeys on the board. I believe they made beer and wine as well. All of the ciders that I tried was terrific. We sat down inside. Not much room inside but lots of areas outside for dining. It was a good find and near the other location. They have a farm of orchards and more of them. read more

Fox Tail has really good cider and it was the best that we tried while in Oregon. If you don't like cider they have apple wine, 2 beers on tap, cocktails and spirits. If you are hungry, they also have snacks. We ended up ordering a pretzel with cheese. There are 10 ciders on tap, we had a flight so we were able to try them all. My two favorites were the empire and perfect pear. If you are around the Mount Hood area, check this place out (it is also part of the Fruit Loop). read more

Whenever I'm in Hood River or driving the Fruit Loop, I stop at Foxtail for a cider tasting. Sitting out front, enjoying various fruit and herb flavored ciders while taking in the view of Mt. Adams is a must! If weather is not ideal, the indoor space is comfortable and inviting. The cider samples come in miniature mugs placed in a wooden box making it easy to carry outside to a place in the sun or shade. Ciders range from dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet to sweet. When I'm with a friend, we share a full tasting of 10 ciders for $14. You can also buy them by the pint and fill a Growler with your fave to take home. They even have tastings of vodka made with apples, peaches and pears from their orchards. I haven't done the vodka tastings - will save that for a time when I am staying overnight and not driving back to Portland! read more

Customer Service Fail! Stopped into Foxtails on Sunday at 1545. Waited for the four people in front of us to complete their order, which they weren't getting done anytime soon. Three people behind the counter, only one guy laughing it up with the group. After the gentleman paid for their order, the two ladies decided they wanted to look at the menu again. At this point, we had been waiting for 7-10 minutes. The reason we turned and walked out wasn't the wait, it was the complete lack of any customer service. At no point while waiting in this "line", we're we acknowledged, greeted, or any attempt to say, "be with you in a minute". Even after making eye contact, nothing. Perfect way to end our trip to Hood River! The young man helping us was excellent, so helpful. The space was nice and cool, and clean. Very inviting on an incredibly muggy August afternoon. The ciders were fantastic! The best I've ever had. My favorite was the Fuzzy Haven, which has peach notes, but is dry and refreshing, not at all sweet. My next favorite is the Mora Rosa, as tasty as it is beautiful, made from apples and raspberries. The Mora Rosa is also refreshing and is a semi-dry cider. There is Corn Hole and Ladder Golf out front, and a sweet little produce market next door. My only complaint is, they do not bottle sell their cider bottled in Portland... Such a bummer!!! read more

Hard cider is a legit "thing" in the Pacific Northwest and the drive along Oregon Route 35 between Mt. Hood and Hood River is lined with apple orchards and fruit farms ... exactly where you'll discover Fox Tail Cider. With 10 different ciders on tap, you can choose a sampler of all for $14 ... or 5 for $8. Full pints ($7) and 12-oz pours ($5) are also available once you "decider-on-a-cider" that you like best. We had a non-drinker along (please cider responsibly) and Fox Tail was able (with some effort) to scrounge up some old-school non-alcoholic apple juice for her, too. The dry, semi-dry, and semi-sweet ciders ranged from 4.8% ABV to 6.5%. My recommendations are the Sir Isaac (semi-dry 6.2%), Pollen Keeper (semi-sweet 4.8%), and Fox-Tail/Full Sail (semi-dry 5.5%). We went a little out of our way to visit and it was well worth it! The scenery and views driving here from Hood River are great and the area Fox Tail is in is beautiful too, rolling hills and orchards. It's a cute place with some nice outdoor seating and some indoor as well. We tried all of their ciders and a couple of their distilled offerings as well, they all tasted pretty good. My wife really liked the tropic flame and end up getting a bottle, I thought their Straight up pear cider was really good. We had out two kids with us (4 & 1) and that wasn't a problem, even for indoor seating. I kind of stumbled on this place while driving through and decided to give it a try. From the reviews, I thought it was a bigger operation (in my mind anyway). Pulled in and it's next to a fruit stand. Parking was full, but found a spot and went in to the tasting room. I'm guessing 7 tables inside and 5 out on the porch. They have 10 ciders on tap at a time I think and about 1/2 of those seem to be available to buy in bottles. I did the 1/2 sampler for $8 and you get 5 in a set of neat little mugs, see some of the picts people posted. $14 for the full 10 sampler. I tried 1-3 and 9-10. #3 was my personal favorite. The pear cider was pretty good too. #10 was a sweet cider. I don't know if I should have done that one first, but after the dryer ones, it didn't strike my fancy. In my mind, I'd love to see this place as a full on bar/restaurant versus a tasting room. I think that could make for an excellent experience for a day in the Hood River Valley. Maybe there's something like that nearby and I just didn't know. I guess I should have asked!! read more

The overall experience was a lot of fun. This were a cozy place during Autumn, and the ambience was perfect for a fall day escape. The cider flight tasting was lots of fun and full of variety. Ciders were reasonable, and it is a great experience to do. The only thing that was bad was our server. When I asked her questions she acted "put out" claiming she had to help out in the back for production. After she served our flight, she did leave for 2 minutes to help in the back. Otherwise, she came back and just read a magazine, stared off in space, or acted down. I understand people have bad or off days, but if that was the case she should have perhaps stayed home. We loved the cider, and the cider out weighs her emotional energy, but she just wasn't good at her job. Overall, I will come back, but just hope the service is better next time around. read more

Selfish I know but if it becomes too popular then I can't just roll in, snag an amazing pint of cider, sit in the sunshine, enjoy a view of Mount Adams and enjoy life. They were not busy when we visited at noon on a Saturday, and the staff was friendly. Shared the sampler tray of 10 ciders--majority of them were dry and slightly bitter for my taste. Full flight was $14. Plenty of variety with 10 varying ciders on tap, but overall, the ciders were just okay, I prefer something a little sweeter and less dry myself.
