If you're curious about renewable energy, you should definitely take the free tour at wildhorse…read morerenewable energy center. It was honestly one of the most interesting and educational experiences of my visit to the area. The tours are completely free and our guide Bob was lovely. He packed an incredible amount of information into the tour while keeping everyone entertained with an endless stream of puns and dad jokes. He was enthusiastic and it's obviously he genuinely loves what he does. There were two children in our tour group and he made a point of involving them throughout the experience and letting them participate. It's definitely a family friendly activity. The highlight for me was getting to go inside an actual wind turbine. I was was especially interested in the ladder assist system as I've never seen anything like that before. Standing inside gives you a new appreciation for the size and engineering involved. You can't really get a feeling for the scale of these things just by looking from afar or looking at pictures but after seeing one from the inside you will walk away with a whole new respect for the technology involved and the people who maintain them. Another thing that was interesting to me was seeing one of the giant turbine blades up close. There was a crane accident that damaged it before installation and they use it as an educational display. Our guide explained how expensive even a single blade is and told the story of how insurance ultimately covered the loss and gave them a free display. It was helpful to be able to stand right next to one of these and to understand the share size of them. I also enjoyed learning about the thought that went into building the wind farm responsibly. The process was explained by our guide and he discussed how they intentionally don't even have turbines in the very locations with the strongest winds because doing so would have greatly affected the natural wildlife. Everything seems intentionally designed to avoid important habitats and they seem to be taking great care to preserve migration corridors. They also monitor wildlife and adapt their practices to reduce the impacts on birds and other animals. It was nice to hear that maximizing energy production is not their only priority. They seem to really care about protecting the surrounding ecosystem as much as possible as well. I also appreciated that they welcomed our small dog on the tour. Finding educational attractions that are dog friendly isn't always easy, so that was a huge bonus for me. This is one of those rare attractions that's really to or everyone. All are welcome and everyone will leave having learned something new. If you're anywhere near the area, I highly recommend this tour.

Great place to learn and get up close and personal with the wind turbines dotting our landscapes…read more PSE emphasizes the steps they take to leave wildlife undisturbed.
