First time coming here yesterday, at the recommendation of a family member. I can say this place is very good! The staff were very attentive and friendly. I already have a go to spot in RI for orange chicken and not many other places I've been, have been on par with my go to spot. Fortune house is now one of those places that rivals my go to orange chicken spot! I also love the relaxed and cozy atmosphere. The mood lighting, the relaxing music playing throughout the restaurant. The seats are some of the softest and comfiest I've ever sat in, in any restaurant. I also would like to mention they have one of those classic moving waterfall pictures in the entry way. I always love seeing those. I do wish our server did come by once more to refill my water, as the delicious orange chicken had a kick to it haha. My wife and I decided to give this restaurant a try. At first things were going well. We were seated right away and the hostess/server was polite. They played calming music and overall we liked the atmosphere. We order the spicy wings to start and they were pretty good. It's hard to mess up fried chicken so I was pleased but not impressed. The problem started when we received our entrees. My wife order the general tso chicken and the chicken was undercooked. I ordered the pan fried noodles and they tasted okay. But then I noticed what looked like larva in my plate and after studying it further I realized that's exactly what it was. I told the server and she looked embarrassed but had no issues taking it off our bill. Needless to say I will not be going back to this restaurant. If you eat here just examine your food. read more

I think that the food is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Northern Rhode Island. Some dishes I really enjoy are the rice cake, Beef with Black Bean Sauce, Mixed Vegetable with Dried Bean curd in Brown sauce, and scallion pancakes. Have ordered many time from here for take out. This time I ate inside. It's very cozy inside. Not very big but very nicely decorated. The food never disappoints. It's very authentic. The portions are great also. There were 4 of us. We had the steamed dumplings and scallion pancakes to start. For our main meal we ordered shrimp lo mein, General Tso's chicken, garlic chicken and my daughter ordered the number 11 which was a dinner combo plate of boneless spare ribs, teriyaki beef and fried rice. The food here is a little more expensive, but it's better than Great Taste. I wish they put more filling in their crab rangoons and made beef teriyaki a combo plate option. Had their "general tsao's chicken" recently and I would say the meat could be better quality and the outside was kind of soggy. They also charge more for pork fried rice and u have to request just fried rice to avoid hidden fees. Went there for lunch and got a Lunch Combo. Nothing fancy, a shrimp, chicken and beef stir fry combo with brown rice and a bowl of soup.. I asked for the kitchen to make it light..so little sauce. Still the meat was very salty. About 10 minutes after leaving the restaurant I had a really bad stomach ache and I had to run to the restroom. Not a good experience. Don't think I will go back. Also, if you spend anything less than $10.....don't even think about using your credit card. !!! NO !! I've heard some good things about Fortune House and saw good reviews, so I had to try it. The best way I can describe it is mall foodcourt Chinese food; good for free samples, but that's about it. Also, the alcoholic drinks just taste like juice. It's fine, that's all, but given the other great local options I won't come again. We ordered our food and were told 25 minutes. We showed up at about 35 minutes, just incase, and didnt get our food until 55 minutes. This isn't a big deal if we had been told 55 minutes, but quote the time better. This place was a pretty decent Chinese takeout place, and they delivered which was a plus! We ordered the soup, crab Rangoon, and general tso. The hot and sour soup was pretty good, had some good flavor to it and definitely good for a winter night or if your not feeling well. My husband loved the crab Rangoon. The general tso was the star of the show in my opinion, it was the perfect crispness mixed with the flavor from the sauce and a decent amount of rice and egg roll. The only thing I do wish was that the rice was fried rice instead of just plain rice but maybe we can ask for that next time. OK . This place finally caught up to me on the whole business changed thing and oh how I will always miss their first year in business now. I had the worst experience last night at what was still considered a go-to spot when not wanting Jackie's. I had the worst example of Shrimp Tempura I have even seen where they had really covered it in 3 or 4 layers of Italian breadcrumbs and egg wash. It was like friggin nothing that is Chinese at all and could of been shrimp parmigiana if given some red sauce. I almost drove back to return it. The other dishes were just as bad.with chicken fingers that you could crack a tooth on ( OVER COOKED BURNT CRAPPOLA). Going to a buffet would of been an upgrade. The one sacred dish I hope is still intact would be the Crispy Walnut Chicken. But I have doubts on really wanting to go back and ruin that memory too. read more

The crab rangoon had hardly any filling in it and although the broth of the wonton soup was one of the best that I've tried, it had only three wontons in a LARGE order. I've been hearing about Fortune House for years from co-workers who ranted and raved about the place. I'm was never really the type to go out to eat at restaurants on my lunch break until recently when I started working on a project with new peers who go out for lunch all the time. Today, I ventured out for a lovely lunch with my boss and she suggested Fortune House. We arrived at 12:45'ish and it was busy but we were able to grab a small table. It definitely felt like a lot of corporate folk were dining there and then I immediately notice several other co-workers at a table next to the door. I was totally impressed with the atmosphere; it's small, yes, but it packs a punch. It's extremely cozy and welcoming. The waitstaff were attentive and quick to get us seated, our food served and out the door knowing we had to get back to work; but I didn't feel rushed. They have a great size menu, a little for everyone. It's your typical Chinese-American cuisine but it's cooked wonderfully and with a light touch. They served us fried noodles and duck sauce as an appetizer. I ordered shrimp & broccoli and my boss ordered chicken chow mein; it was delicous! The prawns were large and juicy and the the broccoli was bright green, fresh and had a nice crunch. We both ordered off of the lunch menu and the portions were just right. I hardly ever finish a plate of food, but I did today and I didn't feel like a cow. The bill came to a whopping $17 and it was worth every inexpensive penny. Ugh do not downgrade a really great restaurant because you didn't ask for your precious pork fried rice so the waitress brought you white rice and there wasn't as much MSG in your meat slop as you're used to. My friends and I ordered 2 combination plates and one order of crab rangoon. I've come here a couple of times for a meal with colleagues, but today I decided to try take out. Let me tell you, you can't get a better meal in this area for 7$. I ordered the General Tso's lunch (which included an egg roll but they offered me extra fried rice instead, thank you!) special for 7$ (including tax!) The chicken wasn't overly battered, and wasn't sopping full of sauce. A lot of Chinese resturants sock their chicken with overly sugary bright red sauce, and I was pleasantly surprised that the sauce on the dark meat chunks was light and flavorful. The meal was quick but you may have to wait a little once you get there to pick it up. They quoted me 10 minutes, I was there at about 10 minutes after I called and I still waited, but it was no big deal. The meal also wasn't SUPER PIPING GOING TO BURN YOUR MOUTH hot, which was pleasing. It was of course hot to eat, but didn't burn me like many other take out places do! Taking off a star because the fried rice wasn't anything at all to write home about and the lack of communication on their credit card policy. It was basically white rice browned with some soy sauce and a quarter of a fried egg. No meat (not necessary) but there wasn't anything else, no onions or bean sprouts. Sadfaces. Also, they only take cash for transactions less than 10 dollars, yet they don't have that listed online anywhere. Luckily I had cash. I totally understand the policy of no credit cards below 10$, but they should have that on their website. All in all, not a bad experience, and I will definitely be ordering food from them in the future. If you're looking for a sit in experience, it is pretty gorgeous inside for a strip mall restaurant. Hubby and I have not had Chinese for a while because we can never find a good place! We ordered for delivery rather than eating in. The lady that took my order was friendly, repeated my order back to me, and was easy to understand. I didn't have to repeat my order at all. She said 45minutes before it were to be delivered and it was on time! The food tasted like the place just opened for the day. Fresh, clean, and our bag was stocked as if someone took the time to make it look presentable. The extra sauces were in a nicely tied bag. The take out containers were like tubberware. Durable and easy to open. My husband's loves boneless spare ribs. Usually any place we go to its dry with no sauce to help it. This one was tender, juicy, and they added extra boneless rib sauce. We also love pork fried rice. Most places we go to its very greasy. This was very "just right" as my husband put it. I also ordered General Tsos Chicken. It wasn't sticky and chewy. It was just perfect. Crab ragoon was on point and the egg rolls were also not greasy. We will def be ordering again and hopefully eat in, in the future. read more

Fortune House is one of the few Chinese food restaurants that I actually prefer to dine in at. It is a tiny, homey, restaurant located in the same plaza as Planet Fitness on Mendon Road in Cumberland. Unfortunately, it can be easily passed by, especially because they do not offer delivery. My favorite aspect of Fortune House is the quaint, relaxed feel of the restaurant, especially if you visit for dinner on a weekday. You can enjoy a nice quality, unrushed meal, and it's a great place for dinner conversation. My father and I enjoy coming here for dinner every so often, it's the perfect place to eat a nice meal and catch up. Of their offerings, I really enjoy Fortune House's boneless spare ribs and fantail shrimp. They also offer "house special" fried rice with beef, chicken, pork, and shrimp that's pretty good. Of the times I have visited over the years, only once was I displeased with the food. There must have been a different chef than usual on duty because 9 times out of ten it is very good. They are not my favorite Chinese food in the area but they are among the top contenders. If you visit often enough, they will remember your name and favorite dishes. read more

Wow! I am incredibly impressed with the Fortune house! I stopped in to eat while passing through because I had some time to kill. I ordered an egg drop soup, tea, and chicken chow fun. I'm pretty much in love. I would drive here from Providence to experience this deliciousness again. The food was hot, and not overly greasy. The flavor was perfection on my tongue and the quality of the chicken was surprising! I gave it 4 stars since it's my first time, and I like to give some time for comparison, but holy moly... We have been happy customers of Fortune House for five or six years now. In our opinion, Fortune House serves the best Chinese food in the area. The menu contains very authentic dishes and they never have a problem adjusting dishes to meet certain dietary needs. The portions are appropriate, we usually have left overs when ordering dinner dishes. Our children like the combination lunches and dinners as those come with soup or an egg roll. The only reason for 2 instead of 1 star is because this place USED TO be good. I used to go here occasionally for my lunch break with people I work with and it USED TO be awesome. We have decided to not return. The last time we went, the food took a super long time to arrive, and one person in my party never even got their meal. We were promised 3 times out was on its way, only to find they had never started. When it never came, he had to grab a quick sandwich from the deli next door. I had to upgrade my previous review from a few years ago! The food here had been consistently great. I don't order often, just a few times a year, but when I do, it's fantastic. For this order, I made my first chinese food delivery order ever(!), and the food arrived HOT and fresh in 30 min when the original estimate was 45 min. The order was correct and the delivery man was very polite. The gentleman who took my phone order said they weren't very busy at the moment and could deliver so it sounds like they can't always accommodate delivery (this is unconfirmed) and that's probably also why it was early, but that's understandable. Make sure you pay over the phone if you're using a credit card and not cash. This time, I ordered food the hot and sour soup, and I'm not usually that into soup but was craving it and I have to say I'm a converted fan! Great sour bite with a good texture and overall flavor. The sesame chicken is lightly breaded with an orange-like sauce, a bit zesty but not too pungent and a good choice (I don't love orange peels in the orange chicken, so this is a nice alternative to that). The veggie dish of sauteed bok choy and black mushroom was much tastier than I thought it would be, and the chicken lo mein was excellent as always.
