Oh, Fortune House! A local resource that one returns to again and again, even if the food is sub-par. Is its fundamental attraction the tank of koi, which seem to grow fatter as one watches? The recent rehab has done wonders for the physical space, and the service--especially by the lightening-fast, ultra-efficient Sharon--is tops. Now we come to the food. I can only say that if one orders carefully, VERY carefully, one can get decent Chinese-American food that does the job when one can't bear to cook for oneself. Ordering carefully means avoiding, for the most part, "made" saucy dishes--which is to say, those that involve multiple ingredients cooked together with, yes, a sauce. That leaves chicken wings, ribs, scallion pancakes, dumplings, and the like. An exception to my rule: the various full-dish soups. Prices are very reasonable, a major plus. Now if the owner could just emerge from her cocoon of done-this-a-thousand-times-too-often boredom..... PS, I never eat on the premises, always go there and pick up food. read more

I use to go here a lot and the food was pretty good! I went the other night and the food was good but the portions were a lot smaller than they use to be. Then to add insult to injury, I over heard the lady at the desk on the phone with a person who received the wrong takeout order from a delivery person; She told the person not to touch it and the delivery person will bring their correct order and pick up the incorrect order. WHAT??? The person had to open the food to see that it wasn't what they ordered. That means that it should have been deemed unsafe to re deliver to the correct person. I wont be back! read more

Quick and tasty. I came here on a snowy day and ordered takeout: Sesame Chicken and General Tso's chicken. My food came out within 10 minutes and I was out in a flash! I recently had lunch there. I was being treated by my mother in law, as she was buying. She asked me to pay previously, and she gave me 2 50's to cover it. The food was so so. The service on the other hand was rushed. At the end of the meal, I had a dilemma. The meal came out to $53.60. It was my mother in law's money, so I didn't want to break her second 50. I had $8.00 in my pockets, and kind of meekly gave $58 for the check. I am normally a 20% tipper, but since my disability a few years ago, being able to do 20% tips is kind of difficult these days. What happened next astonished me. As we engage in some conversation at the table (It was not crowded at all), the waitress approaches me and says "Sir, you make a mistake. You not give enough tip. Four forty not fifteen percent." WHAT??!! REALLY?? Seriously? I've dined in this country literally from coast to coast. In more than 48 years of dining, I have NEVER encountered this. No where is it posted, either on the menu, or anywhere in the restaurant that an obligatory 15% tip for five people was expected or required. Prior to exiting the restaurant, I looked high and low for such a notice. Nada, nothing, zilch. That was the only decent explanation why a server would do this. But nooooooo, this waitress took it upon herself to embarrass me in front of my friends demanding more money for herself. If it were my money I was using, I would have said too bad. Since it was my mother in law's money, she volunteered to pony up $4.00 more. What if it were my money? What if it was all I had? Would she refuse to service disabled people on a fixed income because they couldn't give more than they had? I have a lot of respect for servers My daughter served her way through a master's degree. I've seen her financial struggles getting by on tips. . Yet she NEVER asked a customer for more tip money. So...... Fortune House will not get a dirty penny more from me. read more

I think this is the best Chinese I've had in a while. I live down the block and order here a few times a week. Never had a bad experience, 95% of the time the food is excellent, I've had a few times where the chicken was a little over-fried, but it happens. The lunch specials are awesome, and if you dine in they give you wonton crisps and tea with your meal. I've tried about 10 dishes there and it's all good. I think it deserves 4 stars but I gave it 5 to offset the random 1 star reviews. read more

The food is "hit or miss". It was better a few years ago and I've noticed it's more of a "miss" than a "hit" now. In addition to the inconsistency in flavor, there is an inconsistency in the amount of food. Sometimes you get more chicken...sometimes you need to search among the vegetables... Because of the convenience - and limited take-out food choices in the area - I sometimes order from them and hope for the best. Because of their rudeness at the counter, and over the phone - I won't be taking my chances on a "hit or miss" meal anymore. Fortune House is a neighborhood institution. The food is variable from dish to dish, it's the kind of place where you'll be happier if you've tried much of the menu and stick to what you like. The scallion pancakes, congee, sautéed string beans and home-style Tofu are very yummy. I've heard rumors of a sometimes offered, never printed legit Asian menu but have never been able to confirm if this is reality even for those who know what to ask for. Their lunch special is a very good deal. The owners are very involved and nice. There is superior Asian food in tourist Manhattan Chinatown, Flushing and Sunset Park but sometimes you don't want to travel. The first time I went I had pork fried dumplings and pork fried rice and it was okay. Today I went back for the lunch special and bought an egg roll, chicken wings, sea sesame (it had no sesame on it, okay fine)chicken with rice. The chicken wings were extremely oily, the oil they fried it in was clearly old. The egg roll was dripping oil in the bag it was packaged in. Again the oil they used is clearly old. I wanted to dip my egg roll into the duck sauce and when I did....It was probably one of the nastiest sauces to hit my tongue. It clearly was past it's prime or made with some gross ingredient. I'll never go back! Although the people are very friendly the food isn't good enough for me to waste my money for oily overly fried foods. read more

I wasn't expecting much. I'm not a big fan of Chinese delivery. However, myself and a group of people ordered this when we were working late in Dumbo. I got the General Tso's chicken combo. It was on the sweet side, but the sauce was really good and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Fantastic texture. The fried rice has fresh tasting vegetables, very nice. Everyone really liked it, much better than your standard NYC Chinese delivery. It's not the cheapest by any means, but you can tell they care about the ingredients and preparation. I grew up in Greenpoint and always went to a restaurant called Shanghai Lee on Manhattan Avenue. It closed about 10 years ago and I have been looking for a comparable replacement ever since. Fortune House isn't exactly the same, but it's the closest I have found in NYC. This place is old school and they serve you the crunchy noodles with sweet and sour sauce. If you want classic Chinese American food like beef and broccoli, this place is fantastic. And they serve hot tea like all good old school nyc chinese restaurants. read more

We live in the neighborhood so we are happy to be able to walk here. However we have stopped eating here in the last few months because the food is tasteless. We could only figure out that they must have changed chefs. I have spoken to a few people about the restaurant and they agree the food has changed. I have been eating here for 11 years. My bedroom window used to be adjacent to their kitchen window when I first moved to NYC and I would smell Chinese food all day long. With any other restaurant I would probably have been sick, but their food is amazing and their kitchen is clean. The best entree: Triple Delight The two best soups: Hot and Sour and Wonton. I've been coming here for years but lately their food has taken a turn for the worst. Their shrimp dumplings were dry, the sauce for them was bitter, BBQ spare ribs were unseasoned and greasy and finally the white rice was hard. My stomach still hurts from the greasy ribs. Good lunch specials, the lomein in was very tasty the noodles weren't overcooked. Not pricy 6.50 each plate with soup or soda. I had pork steamed noodles, those were good, but not the best I've had before, but for 6 for $4.00 it's a good deal. The spicy shrimp with peanuts was very good although they add lots of celery other than that very good. They offer hot tea and crispy noodles with a spicy and sweet dipping sauce, I recommend the sweet one. Good ambience, service was good and quick. Very basic neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Service was prompt but slightly overbearing, asking us three times within 10 minutes if we were ready to order (while semi empty). Luke warm and diluted green tea, few shrimp in my chicken and shrimp entree, and had to pay a $1 extra for sauce (although still very reasonable for the price- well, BK heights prices). Bad customer service. Came from far to eat here and all we got was what they felt like giving us. I asked for vegetable fried rice and they give me fried rice with eggs and then the server has the nerve to tell me the vegetables are in the rice. I also asked for chicken wings well done and I get chicken wings cooked well on the outside and raw on the inside. I will never come back here again and I suggest no one to go there to eat. Went there to get a quick late lunch for take-out. Pretty empty around 3:30 p.m., but it's not like the staff was particularly friendly. Very business-like. Got the Hunan Beef with egg-friend rice and hot and sour soup. Altogether, was $6.35, which is a little more than I expected to pay for a lunch dish and small soup. In any case, the Hunan Beef portion was ridiculously outbalanced by the rice. Just a few thinly sliced pieces, and the rest of the fairly large plastic container was ALL RICE. They should change the name of the dish to "Egg-fried (or whatever rice you choose) Rice and A few small slices of beef." Not the way to bring customers back. So I was a bit worried to order from Fortune House, based on the reviews I read here, but I've gotta say, my meal was awesome. I got take-out here in my continuing search to find good vegetarian Chinese food around the Heights (which is harder than you'd think it would be). I know it depends on what you order, so maybe if you want meat you should be wary, but the tofu is cooked well (not just cubed and slid into sauce), and the vegetarian egg rolls are delicious, and huge! Unless I unexpectedly find an even better place, or have some miserable experience in the future, I will definitely be a regular at Fortune House. read more
