Had a great experience here for a friend's birthday. The waitress was friendly and helpful, even with us asking a lot of questions. Her tables seemed to be all over the restaurant but she'd always come back and check in. She gave good food recommendations as well. The food was very good - I had the risotto, which was a sizable portion and had good flavor. My friends had the scallops and said they were good as well. We all also shared the tarragon biscuits which were great. And the view is really nice! Overall, it was a great night out, and we'd definitely go again. read more

First time trying on my wife's birthday. We were extremely impressed with the flavor and quality of the food. Although there is much classic American food, the flavors alone will set these dishes apart. We were able to try the four-season patio in the middle of winter and it was a wonderful experience with a cozy fireplace. Definitely a comfortable, yet elegant setting. Went for dinner with a party of 5. Reservation was easy to get on a Monday evening. Inside and outside the restaurant is architecturally nice and nicely laid out in the dining areas. Service was very friendly and attentive, but on the slow side. The wait between appetizers and main course was annoyingly long. We had the calamari and poutine for appetizers and both were very good. Entrees were pork chops, bavette steak, scallops and short ribs. Food was good, but portions were small for the price. The scallops in particular were pretty meager - 4 one and a quarter inch scallops with a very thin slice of pork belly for $39. Appetizers run in the mid 20s, entrees average close to $40. Food is good, but not outstanding. Presentation is very nice. Overall, it's a nice restaurant with good food that's done up nicely, but waaaaay overpriced. Went here for a second time. This time it was just myself and I sat at the bar. Had the chilled pea soup and one of the flatbreads. This was a Thursday early in the evening right after work. Bartenders were nice, but not attentive. I sat there for a long before I was asked if I wanted a drink. Once I got the drink it took a bit to get my order in. However, once I got the order in, it came out very quickly. It almost seemed to quickly. Of course, I am referring to the flatbread. Nothing blew me away. Not the service nor the food. They still had the crowded dining area and odd table where they prepare bread and olives in the front. I spent close to $45.00 by the time I was done. Seemed odd for a drink, soup, and flatbread while sitting at the bar. I am sure I had something else which added to the price. Still seems odd for a single person sitting at the bar. My previous review had some more critical comments because there were so many mistakes. I stayed away for a while in hopes that it would get better. Nothing really seems to have changed yet. This place is a great addition to Groton's burgeoning restaurant scene. The views are spectacular and in the summertime definitely try to snag one of the tables outside. When we went, we were helped out by a very friendly and capable bar tender. The drinks list was great, and I was happy to see many of my favorite Maine beers on tap. The olives and bread they give you are great touches during your drinks/appetizer time. The food did not wow me just yet. The pasta was good and fine, but the flatbread we ordered was absolutely drowning in a boring cheese and had zero mushrooms on it (it was specified as a wild mushroom option). Overall a good experience. I will be going back to try more things and I'm excited to truly be impressed. read more

We had a lovely early dinner at Forge & Vine! Our server, Derek, was great. He made helpful suggestions & knew the menu well. He was attentive without hovering and anticipated our needs. Service was seamless, with nice details like crumbing the table & intentionally displaying the dessert spoons. Foodwise, all the proteins were cooked perfectly! Pork chop, shrimp, scallops. I don't like al dente veggies, and the soft, buttery cauliflower was great. The "on the house" sparkling water was a nice touch, as was the toasted focaccia (so good!). The orange butter was wonderful. I'd eat it by itself! The pork was delicious. This dish, however, was described as having "crispy fingerling potatoes", which they were not. We were really looking forward to a crispy spud! I could not figure out how the wine list was organized ( . . . sparkling, then I saw pinot noir, then France, Italy, & another country I think, & the last page was red varietals, if I remember correctly). I'm fairly new to wine appreciation, so maybe it's a format I'm not familiar with? We ordered the espresso crème brûlée, which was crème brûlée with chocolate covered espresso beans & warm mini donuts (beignets?). I believe a real and authentic restaurant starts with the people. Every single person at Forge & Vine strives their best to provide an amazing, incredible, and memorable experience. The food is outstanding and speaks for itself. The ribeye is one of the best steaks you will ever try, I've had it many of times. My boyfriend and I decided to go with the chicken Milanese and the Caprese pizza. The butter sauce of the chicken melanise and the sweet tomato sauce with the pizza we're finishing touches of luxury. Joe is an amazing server with an incredible amount of knowledge. The views that this restaurant offers is like a painting transcending in the background. This was my first visit to this place. It had a nice atmosphere/vibe and the food was excellent. But I have to say that I was really put off when we ordered 4 oysters (2 of each type available), and one was no larger than the size of a quarter. I mean, this thing was BARELY a bite - - and a tiny bite at that. I could not believe that the chef of a good quality restaurant would let that embarrassingly tiny thing leave his/her kitchen. At $3.75/oyster, I expect to at least be able to taste it! The person who plated it, or even our waiter, should have either changed up the mini oyster with a normal sized one, or added another oyster to our plate. It was appalling, and sadly, cast a negative shadow on my first impression of this place. The rest of the meal was quite good. It was a bit pricey, but the service was great and we had a nice time. The food is what I would call good British Sunday Roast crossed with the possibility of oysters and sparkling wine. It is good. The views are New England charm and relaxing. A bucolic setting with white cloth napkins, trained staff, and a new modern building. Why only 2 stars? Lack of hospitality. The tone of the front of house hostess/manager was irritating at best, and offensive at worst. She managed to ruin what would have been a lovely experience! The best description of this person I can think of is the "fake nice" mean girl. You know the one. The one where she tells you that you look like hell out of "concern" but you're left feeling she enjoyed insulting you. Maybe she didn't get any sleep and maybe she was having a hard day, but she behaved as if it was a chore to answer my questions about outdoor seating and 'whether or not one's well-behaved dog is allowed to sit with you.' (No). This being my first - and only - visit, it is a fair question. I didn't have any expectations, but wanted to decide whether or not I would order take out or have a quick meal. Her response was dripping with contempt as if it was absurd for me to even ask. Then, after this exchange, she doesn't seat me and points me to my Adirondack chair to seat myself after I prepare my car windows and water bowl for my dog (it was 65 and cloudy- I wouldn't even consider this on a hot or cold day). I put the short unpleasantness out of mind thinking that she's probably just having a day and I wasn't going to get caught up with that energy. However, about 20 minutes into my meal she comes over to interrupt my telephone conversation-after I had already declined water for my dog because I had sorted it out- with a fake offer of 'water for your dog.' Then, that's not enough, so she deputizes a younger sweeter waiter to interrupt my long distance phone call to old friends in London (I was dining solo) -AGAIN- with a polite demand to "please go check on your dog, I heard it barking" and he "didn't want it to suffer" (unbeknownst to him that I know immediately this is a lie because my dog is not a barker, is very comfortable in my car, it was a comfortable 65 degrees and cloudy outside and I would recognize her barking - I was within earshot- both this lie and the fact that she recruited an accomplice irritated me). Since I never mentioned my dog to the younger waiter, I knew the manager/hostess sent him with this ruse. So, I asked her directly when she heard my dog barking. She became uncomfortable and lied saying she 'knows nothing but that maybe the dog barked when she was inside.' Now, I hear some of you saying/thinking "but maybe she wanted you to leave because you made a phone call at lunch, everyone knows that is annoying." Perhaps, and I know it can sometimes be hard to ignore a conversation at a nearby table (between a group of people, a couple, or a person on a phone call), but I have to tell you the context of this is strange -- I arrived at an odd hour (3:30pm) when it was quiet, I sat outdoors in a corner to myself, and I kept my voice down (admittedly, I had misplaced my earbuds, mea culpa), and was otherwise courteous. You may say Emily Post would prohibit phone calls in any dining room, and you might be right, but I was not aware we were in that sort of establishment and, furthermore, it seems to me that if that were the case (and I still don't know if it was) the FAR better option for the hostess and waiter would have been to politely inform me that their restaurant had a "no telephones" policy and I would have immediately and apologetically complied. Simple! It seems utterly tone deaf to make up a lie and badger me with it so as to make me uncomfortable enough to leave, sapping whatever enjoyment could be had of a quiet moment overlooking the hills to catch up with friends I would otherwise not have spoken to on that afternoon (and, no, I couldn't have had this conversation at home- there is a time difference and we're in the middle of COVID-19 restrictions and there is precious little space to find a bit of quiet and relative privacy to have a conversation). I would have happily complied with any of their rules and policies if they had been made known to me politely and directly or I would have chosen a different venue for lunch or ordered out. Far simpler than the tortured social maneuvers performed this afternoon! It became clear that as early dinner guests arrived - from my phone text message stamps, I saw I was there for about 70 minutes - that the main front of house manager/hostess wanted me gone. For what reason, I can't understand. Dress code? Telephone? Questions? The fact that I was alone without a dining companion and they thought they could free up a spot? Maybe it has nothing to do with me at all. Either way polite direct communication would have been preferred. read more

I want to love this place, but slow service, cramped tables and a mixed bag on food can just be rewarded with three stars. Arrived at 4:30 and left at 7. The service started fine, then it was 20 minutes at one point to see our server again. Even asking for our bill took some time. Empty plates sat in front of us for 30 minutes. When we left, it was crowded as you would expect on a Saturday night. It was amazing how close and cramped the floor of the restaurant is as you feel like you are intruding on those who are eating on the way out. The food was mixed. First, a nice but small kale salad that was fresh and good. Nice selection of fresh oysters but the shrimp cocktail was slightly over cooked and mushy... And had that cleaner smell. Brussels sprouts were excellent. The prosciutto and fig flat bread was disappointing - dry with bland fig. Mini lobster roles presented well but were bland and small for price. Ribs were okay. Clam chowder was delicious with bacon. 3 stars may be generous after writing this review. Hopefully, the restaurant will get better with experience. Make me like you... Just don't know if I'll be rushing back. Maybe after the initial crowds and hype, I'll return. Otherwise, it may be short lived.i read more

I attended the soft opening of Forge & Vine, and it was an overall very nice dining experience. Getting there can be a bit tricky if you're not familiar with the Groton Inn's entrance. The parking situation was also dicey, given there was a function happening the same night. I'm not sure with what regularity the restaurant will compete for spaces. Alas, we made it in...and the place was POPPIN'. Rustic chic decor - big, warm, and inviting greets you with the sprwaling open concept, flanking the floating bar serving both cocktails and dinner. Speaking of warm greetings, the (whom I assume is) front of the house Manager greeted us almost immediately with a big smile and an authentic eagerness to serve. Very nice attention to detail. We were seated in a more intimate/siloed portion of the dining room, reserved for larger parties or more private gatherings. For our purposes, I found that a nice repreieve from the bustle of the main dining room. Additionally, there is a small four-seasons porch, complete with rustic fire place, filling the room with heat and rustic charm tucked away to the left of the entrance. Very nice spot for a private gathering or just to chill. The service itself was quite good. Despite the busy and demanding pace of the crowd, the waitstaff and managers seemed to keep up well. You sometimes don't get that type of chemistry from a staff upon opening, but you can tell that Forge & Vine staffed themselves with seasoned pros. Kudos for that. Now, the food. While I ultimately enjoyed my meal, I do feel there are some gaps - especially for the vegetarian/vegan crowd. For starters, I personally had the carrot hummus and cheese plate, both of which were quite good. I think the cheese plate could benefit from some whole fruit, like grapes or figs. The carrot hummus was excellent. Others in the group enjoyed the Kale salad (which was really good) and the mussels. For entrees, the menu is a good size, but still succint. The Bolognese was a crowd favorite, as was the roasted chicken. I think what Forge & Vine can improve upon is their vegetarian entrees. The kale/quinoa bowl was mezza mezza at best, lacking flavor and punch, while the veggie burger was not homemade - but rather the "Beyond Meat" patty, which is not very becoming of the asking price or genre of the restaurant (e.g. the Impossible patty would be a big upgrade, or better yet - craft your own black bean/quinoa, etc.) For the audience being served, adding that niche (especially in today's market) will really put F&V over the top - especially up against the rivaling and neighboring Gibbet Hill. The dessert was excellent, albeit limited. The housemade Aztec Chocolate ice cream was unique and delicious, and the spice cake was killer. Definitely leave room. The wine list is nice, although the 'by the bottle' options are far superior than the 'by the glass' varietals, something I hope to see expanded quickly for the main opening. Touting as a semi-wine bar, the glass options need a facelift and different price points (there was only 1 red over $10). Otherwise, we stuck to bottles, primarily due to the quality and variety of options. All in all, Forge & Vine has a ton of potential. Everything was executed very well, especially for a soft opening. Hopefully the menu can be tweaked slightly to really shine in all areas. I will absolutely be back to watch this place grow, progress, and take on new seasonal offerings. We went here for my husbands birthday and so happy we did! The restaurant is in a beautiful location with awesome views. We arrived early but our table was ready. We ate inside with a view of the open kitchen. We started with oysters on 1/2 shell so sweet and yummy. Each of us ordered something different. We were told we were ordering from summer menu and the fall would be in a couple of weeks. Our waitress was so friendly and attentive. Chicken Milanese was deli out. Loved it chicken was perfect. Others had braised short rib, both raved about the meal cooked perfectly. My husband ordered the filet along with corn bread which was sweet and savory. Filet again cooked perfect everything was hot and yummy. Definitely recommend but make reservations. read more

If you are going specifically for the scenery then definitely call and book ahead of time, otherwise you maybe sitting in the parking lot with an obstructed view. The parking lot seats were fine, but I was envious of the people who had the view (front deck) I went there for. Unfortunately, all but one (all foodies) didn't care for their meal. The mussels, salmon, and swordfish all tasted fishy to us. The swordfish was a thin cut and overcooked. The steak frites was pretty good, at least it was cooked to order. They sure do make the food look much better then it taste. I would consider going back for the specialty drinks and a seat with a view. I would try anything but the fish. Had dinner here. Ordered Braised Short Rib - "special". It came with gilled broccolini which was cooked dry (brown crowns) and the stalks were like rocks. The Yukon potatoes were nice and creamy but not hot. In addition, the balsamic candy jus oozed over all the plate and honestly, it was not a delightful addition. Would have been much better without it. The Short ribs were nice however nothing special and it also suffered from the "jus". My companion had a meal with the addition of fries which were also served cold (note: people like hot fries). Fish however was good but nothing to write home about. We came Valentine's Day 2021. Like other reviews mentioned below, dining out during COVID can be a unique experience but Forge & Vine made sure our Valentine's Day Dinner was comfortable, warm (we were on their heated deck) and delicious (can't wait to get into what we had for dinner...) I made a reservation wayyyy in advance and I'm glad I did because they were all booked up. he restaurant is modern and open. Great to large parties and for a romantic quiet dinner. There's plenty of parking and it's nestled behind the Groton Inn with a stunning view! We enjoyed: the chatham oysters, their gnocchi and broccoli rabe starter, fingerling potatoes with black garlic aioli (can I have this recipe please?!) so crispy and the aioli was fantastic. My husband got the buttermilk fried chicken sandwhich (he said it was one of THE BEST fried chicken sandwhiches he's ever had) and I got the salmon with pistachios and veggies - which I never order at restaurants. However this particular salmon sounded so delicious....they had me at lavender honey.... We ate pretty early @4pm so we decided to take home some pasta for our kid (cavatappi with butter and a side of veggies) and their duck confit flat bread to enjoy later...what a great idea that was. I went to Forge and Vine for Cinco de Mayo last night. I made the reservation 3 days in advance because I received an email promoting Cinco de Mayo. They promised a special menu. I was looking forward to it. My reservation was at 6:15 the menu was supposed to be available until 8 pm. They were out of the specials except for dessert and margaritas. I am a member of the restaurant industry. Don't promote a special menu and market it if you have no intention of having enough. I was informed this happens a lot on special holidays so don't waste your time at Forge and Vine for holidays line Easter, Christmas, New Year's you'll probably be disappointed. read more

Love this place! One thing I would suggest is to try to do something about the noise level in the 4 seasons room. Noise abatement would make the room much more enjoyable... it is very loud. That said, the service, food and ambiance of Forge & Vine is top notch and we can't wait to return. We had the beef carpaccio and roasted cauliflower for starters and both were amazing. I was told he espresso martini was excellent. The seared scallops were excellent as was my wife's shrimp cocktail. Our server, Sarah was outstanding!
