Right around the corner from Juniors (erm.. both of them!!) and the chophouse and a couple of other well established eateries is the brand spanking new Foodgame. I mention the other eateries as Ross - the owner of Foodgame has been quite clever - he has positioned himself as a purveyor of luxery Irish made foods as well as putting together an exceptionally well priced menu. we had 3 coffees, 1 fresh apple juice, 2 saussage baguettes and jam on toast for breakfast, the total -20 Euro. so, quality food at the right price, it fits in perfectly with the surrounding establishments. The current menu is a little restricted but I am told that within 2 weeks there will be a full brunch menu with a couple of hot meal choices in the evening and a sort of tapas choice for the rest of the day. Most importantly, they stock Mellas Fudge - the vanilla one that is sooooo good! I reckon Foodgame is definately worth a shot, I'll be back... once the bigger brunch menu is in place! read more

I had a Sunday brunch with a couple friends and I can't complain about it. We didn't have a reservation and the place was quite busy yet we were sitted in no time. Can't believe I haven't eaten here yet!! Everything was dropped to our table and service friendly and nicely. Eggs with salmon, beautiful BLT and natural orange juice were all the perfect choice for a rainy morning. The service was kind and helpful at all times and the price was very reasonable. Good place for a cup of coffee and breakfast. Has some stuff for kiddos as well. I will say the porridge was amazing. A bit pricey for a bowl of oatmeal, however it has bananas, something similar to hot applesauce and granola on top. It is great! Almost tastes like hot apple pie. Service was good and it was busy. My only mistake was sitting to the far left window looking at the street. I thought it would be nice to spike watch. However, "people" kept sitting directly in front of me smoking. Alas there was no need for my scepticism, the people have spoken and they speak the truth: Foodgame is supremely superb! The nice, chilled and friendly vibes were the first thing that hit me as I walked in, a very pleasant change from the dog-eat-dog queues that squelch out of the neighbouring Juniors.. No, Foodgame is markedly more chilled, with newspapers lying around waiting to be read over a delicious coffee, cake, sambo or soup. OH THE SOUP. I was not expecting anything mind-boggling because I just don't like carrot soup as a rule but didn't feel like a sandwich and wanted more than salad, so carrot soup it was! And wasn't I the cat who got the crater of cream when I took my first bite. This was a bowl of liquidised vegetables like no other, and so flavoursome! I walked by here the other day during my lunch break and grabbed sandwich. They have 4 sandwich selections a day (including vegetarian options), 2 salad options, and a soup of the day. Get a combo for 8.50, just a sandwich for 6.50. The ingredients used were great for the chicken chorizo sandwich I ordered - the chicken was perfectly seasoned, the spicy mayo was AMAZING, and the chorizo was lovely. I wished there was a bit of healthy stuff/leaf in there - perhaps some rocket would have been perfect. They use wholegrain(?) toast which is good, but really scratches up your mouth as it's so dry when toasted. I wish there was a fluffier loaf, but at least they slabbed on the spicy mayo to make it moist enough. I'll definitely come back to try more of the options, I just haven't had enough to really know if this place is at 4/5 stars! read more

Absolutely amazing Coffee/Breakfast/Lunch spot! After arriving in Dublin, a local resident recommended we stop at this place in the neighborhood we were staying in. It's a very small, local spot with a friendly staff and homey atmosphere. The food is prepared to order and fresh. I had their Poached Eggs on Toast with Avocado and Smoked Salmon. Delicious little spot for breakfast to start your day off right. This place clearly has a large throng of loyal followers, they keep loyalty cards behind cashier which I always think is such a nice idea. Another really lovely idea I spotted was "buy your mate a coffee" which is where you buy coffee for your friend and their name goes up on the wall, so they come in and unbeknownst to them their coffee has already been paid for! They also have a cute treasure chest of toys for the little ones, I had to stop myself from going over and checking it out. All the above makes this place very deserving of my full 5 stars, but added to that is the scrumptiously simple food and delightful decor. We opted for omelette and smoked salmon, both of which were so tasty and the salmon was so fresh. We spotted some Quinoa cakes and gluten free lemon drizzle cake which would go nicely with a coffee, no almond milk (yet, I'm hoping!) but they do have soya. What a truly wonderful place! The vibe in there would lighten up the mood of anyone suffering from a bout of melancholy which would of been me. I just can't handle this weather it get's me so down so constructive action was needed. After a long walk around the city I happened upon this bright little place. I got a bowl of tomato soup with brown bread and a glass of orange and apple juice (freshly squeezed). The soup was delicious and the juice was the right side of tart. I read my book whilst terrific hip hop to chilled beats gurgled over the radio. There is a large communal table at the back were people were reading and eating. Several folks sat alone and read the papers etc. The owner was warm and engaging and checked in on everyone to make sure they had what they needed. It also doubles as a store where you can get coffee makers to pastas and sauces and more in between. I can see myself becoming a regular. read more

I had dinner in Food Game on Friday night. Compliments to the staff for being smiley, attentive and quite efficient when there's only two of them waiting on roughly 30 people! Maybe one more person would help. The food was absolutely delicious. My friend and I shared three plates: butterbean hummus, ox cheeks and lamb. The only problem is that the portions are way too small. It came down to two mouthfuls per person and at 10 euros per plate it's too expensive. For dessert we had the financier and chocolate square which were equally delicious. We chose a bottle of Cotes du Rhone but it was not great and again, at 25 euros the bottle I would have expected something better. I'll bring my own next time. So to sum it up: PROS warm and welcoming place with a great atmosphere, excellent staff, delicious food. CONS no value for money because everything is way too pricey. read more

Decent spot for weekday lunches. A soup and sandwich (or salad) combo sets you back 8.50Euro (8 Euro take out), add another 2Euro and you get a coffee as well. The portions are big, fresh and yum. I usually only manage to eat the soup and half of my sandwich so I take the rest home. I've never had their weekend brunch and I'm not that crazy about their coffee but overall a solid option with friendly service and good food. read more

This place reminds me of the trendy cafes in and around Bondi in Sydney. When I saw the photos of the beach on the wall, I figured it must be intentional! It works, anyway. For me, there are some very good and some not great points about this place. Coffee- Have tried it 3 times and not impressed any time really. Sandwiches- really delicious, interesting combinations and at 4 euro a pop, excellent value. Brunch- a bit pricey for what you get. The menu is behind the counter, which you order at and I found it a bit limited. The scrambled eggs and bacon were both very nice, especially the bacon but I really didn't like the bread. It wasn't toasted so was quite soggy and it was a bit sweet. It didn't suit the rest of the food. The fresh juice was lovely but the glass was tiny. For 2 people we spent €30 on brunch. If I'm going to spend that amount, I would like table service and a menu handed to me. Basically, if Junior's was open earlier, I would have gone there. I will come back here, but probably only to get a take away sandwich. read more

Pretty good place to stop for breakfast on the way to work. It is hidden down a street, but a lot of locals go here. An as the saying goes: "If the locals come here, you should go too!" or something like that. The interior is quite nice and you will find a copy of the daily news with your breakfast or coffee. Been to Food Game a handful of times for breakfast and coffee and once for lunch yesterday. I've had really mixed experiences here since first visiting about 2 months ago. They do the best scrambled eggs in Dublin, hands down. Coffee is pretty good too. The space is small but they've recently swapped out some storage for little 2 person tables which helps. Myself and a colleague went there for lunch yesterday around 1.45pm and when we asked if the menu was on the chalkboard as is usual for breakfast, we were told they only do one type of sandwich and soup a day and that the soup was gone. As sandwiches go, it was ok for €4. The service is attentive but if I'm honest, lacks a smile. I'm still a bit curious to try their dinner offering but after yesterday's lunchtime disappointment, I'm not quite as eager as I was. read more

God I was hungover that morning. Stayed in some house after a debauched pink themed anti-Valentine's party. A lot was had, who or what I cannot divulge. But I made my way awkwardly from a house near Lansdowne to this area of Grand Canal that I only really see from the train. He followed, as you do. Breakfast was in order. A sight to behold, him in his tracksuit and me in my hotpants and boots. We got no greeting at the door of this place, rather an acknowledgement by way of a nod and a shrug. If the staff were indifferent, the other punters were downright contemptuous. After not being given a menu and having to ask, we ordered scrambled eggs on sourdough (me) and a ham and cheese omelette (him). Both very tasty, as was the coffee. Took ages to get the bill. Everyone wins at Foodgame! This place is fantastic. It's cute, cozy, and has a great selection. The shop is stocked with all types of interesting ingredients, many of them locally sourced. They have cheeses, meats, pastas, canned goods, coffee beans, cookbooks, wine, and a great variety of speciality items. The coffee is outstanding and reliable. You can almost always guarantee a good cup here, regardless of how you like your beans served. They sell bags of the coffee they serve and also bags of Badger & Dodo from Cork. The food is yummy. They always have a small selection of nice looking baked goods available, a scone or a bun or something similar. We went in for brunch this weekend and can't wait to go back! The breakfast/brunch menu is tiny, but every item on it makes a good choice. They currently have porridge with rhubarb, the thought of which makes my mouth water, and scrambled eggs poured over yummy brown bread. I think this was the first time I've had scrambled eggs and didn't feel compelled to add salt or pepper. They were perfectly seasoned. That doesn't even happen when I make eggs at home. The bread is all super fresh and the Foodgamers know how to turn it into delicious sandwiches. The prices are great, right on target. The staff are friendly and most of them seem to know their stuff when it comes to food. The place is itty-bitty and doesn't have much seating. They also don't have the staff to handle a huge flow of customers all at one time, but they make it work. Everyone, staff and patrons alike, figure out how to juggle themselves around so that there is space for all the hungry people. Excellent food, quick and friendly service! We went there on our last morning before leaving Dublin and were in a bit of a hurry. Ordered overnight oats, beautifully prepared with jam, fruit and pumpkin seeds as well as a few other yummy items! I love this place- it has the nicest vibe of any cafe in the D2/D4/D6 area. I could happily sit here for hours reading the papers and watching the world go by! The coffee here is excellent which helps, and they have a daily fresh juice which is a great start to the day too. Food is so fresh and generally has a twist on the norm - the best scrambled eggs i have ever had anywhere in the world- made with cream apparently :) They are only open for breakfast and lunch these days, but did a dinner stint before xmas. Food was amazing and it's the ideal dinner setting so i hope they start dinner service again soon! read more

Of all lunch spots around my office this has to be my favourite and we often pop in on a friday. The lunch menu is not big, usually they have 3 type of sambo's, soup, salad and a special. Last friday I went for the spinach/ lentil soup. Amazing! And the fresh bread on the side...even better! They have big comfy tables in the back and there's a very relaxed vibe. The place itself is kind of tucked away and easy to miss, but if you're able to find it, you'll be in for a treat. read more
