Four for an early dinner on a wintry Thursday night. Seated immediately and BYO wine opened and poured. Four very different pizzas ordered. My Veronese with ham and mushrooms was excellent. I was glad I ordered the 12" as it was very moreish. My companions had the Manhattan Heat which, with the jalapeños, was hot as was the Nduja ordered by companion #3. The house basil pizza was the fourth. We had ordered garlic bread to share before the pizza arrived but it was served almost as the last pizza slices were being hoovered up. Not to worry - it got demolished anyway. One small peeve however. Whilst the BYO policy is very welcome, I felt the €7.50 charge per bottle is taking the proverbial, hence 4 instead of 5 stars. Erm LOVED this place!!! We sat in the shed, all 11 of us, cosy as bugs in a rug. It's got a little window that allows you to look out on the paupers outside eating at their restaurant tables (how cliche!). They can see you too, so you can feel extra smug in there. Aside from the smugness, you can also plug in your phone to play music, there's a gorgeo little stove for the winter time, lots of cushions and blankets, and there are seats going all the way round the table, so it's a super social space where you can chat with everyone at the same time. I haven't even gotten to the food yet - the pizzas are perfect - stone baked base, good quality toppings and very simple, no fuss. Only thing I would change would maybe adding in some extra sides / starters, like some different dipping sauces / side salads or starters etc. Oh and best of all, it's BYO! Winner!! read more

I've been wanting to review Basil for ages, this amazing wood fired pizza place that suddenly appeared on the corner of Lotts St. sometime last year. Basil started with a little van and a couple of seats just in front of it but with a lot attention to detail they really pulled that off and made it look inviting. Do bring cash though as they don't take cards. Their pizzas are sooo good and so is their coffee. They do have a loyalty card for coffee, that's a nice bonus. In the last few months they have converted part of the adjacent house into an indoor seating area so your topping don't blow off your base and it's just a bit more cosy in the colder months. Their playlist is deadly and they added some desserts to the menu. But the best thing for me is the fact that they are open on bank holidays when everything (and I mean everything) else in the area is closed. This means I'm never stuck for lunch on Bank Holiday Mondays. Yay! read more

Coolest pizza set up in town! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! What a fantastic gem in Ringsend, was here last night for the first time and boy, I'm raving about it to anyone who will listen! From the pictures up on Yelp, I got a great sense for what the set up was like and instantly knew it would be perfect for a night out I was planning for a group from work. All very cool, chilled and relaxed plus hearing the do BYO = bonus! As a group of 11 people, I was sure to ring ahead... First to arrive with 2 others, I wish I had a picture of our faces as we were lead to the most coolest hip happening shed, yes a shed... It's the perfect little party space for a group of 15-20 people max. bench seating wrapped around some tables, awesome blend of mix/match of cushions, pillows and fairy-lights... I could not believe such a cool space has been on my doorstep all this time! As the rest of the group arrived, everyone had the same giddy excited response! Inside the shed, they have a music speaker which you can plug a phone into and play your own music... Sweet! Nestled into our awesome shed, with our own playlist in the background we opened some bottles of wine and listed off a crazy list of pizzas/toppings and gotta say kudos to the waiter, despite us swapping stuff in/out, the order came out exactly as we wanted. BTW - there are gluten free base options! Pizzas are all cooked in a wood oven fire; my fave! I sampled all the pizzas and couldn't fault them, all so flavoursome and the bases were so yum! There is also some pretty casual seating in a courtyard type of set up plus indoor seating; I will defo be back with my hubby and I'm seriously working on a plan to get a group of friends together and reserve that super cute shed again! read more

I was out walking with a friend one night; we were looking for a place to have dinner, and we stumbled upon Basil. It's a "hidden gem" of a place with a warm, delightful décor and an authentic Italian feel. Pizza was what we wanted that night, and pizza is what we had! Basil has two sizes - 9" and 12". We were really pretty hungry, so we got two 9" pies with different toppings to facilitate us having a better sampling of the culinary experience. It was pretty darn good! While the quantity of toppings was a bit light, the quality was top-shelf, and the taste profile of both our pies (one "meat lovers", the other vegetarian) was spot-on. There's a very friendly pizza guy who works outside, and the staff is very friendly and accommodating - I'll be back! read more

What a cute little place! If you like thin, wood-fired pizza, this is your place to go, as they don't do much else (yet..supposedly pasta and salads will soon be added to the menu) We went here for lunch and shared a 12" pizza. They are 10 euro and 1 extra for each topping (The 9" is 7 euro and 50 cents extra per topping). Great value! It's fun you can create to your own taste. Having said that, ours was a little bit too cheesy, with a layer of normal cheese and mozarella on top of that. I hope they will put up some heaters soon, as there's mainly outdoor space (which can be covered)....so it should be fine then, even in colder months. read more

Great little place hidden in the middle of Ringsend. Their pizzas are thin & crispy. You can get creative and design your own. Totally recommend it! The only downside is that they don't serve alcohol and you are charged €1 for each BYOB drink consumed at the premises. read more

This is a great little gem, hidden in Ringsend! Went for pizza here last week, and it was great value, the huge bonus is that it's BYOB!! Basil is the definition of "hidden gem". It's situated at the junction of Ringsend Road and South Lotts Road (across from entrance to Shelbourne Road dog track) and its speciality is delicious pizza from their wood-fired oven and top class coffee. Is it wrong to describe it as a pop-up restaurant? It sprung up a few months back at the side of the house on the corner. They have a couple of portocabins - one inside in which the oven does its work and another for diners to sit inside if it's cold or wet (it's not as primitive as it appears). They also have an outside area (tables on astro-turf, with comfy seats/cushions, a canopy or two to offer shelter etc). It's casual and laid-back with a friendly atmosphere and the pizzas are sublime. You can make your own pizza from the menu and the staff are only too happy to assist or make recommendations. It gets the evening sun so it's a nice little place to relax with friends while having great pizza in a chilled out environment with some music playing in the background. It pretty much ticks the cool and hipster boxes but it doesn't try to, if that makes sense. You can also get take-away pizzas, ring in or email an order or book for a private function. This is a gorgeous little place that I found by accident. We were having our book club meeting and one of the members suggested we try Basil as we didn't want anywhere too expensive. I had spaghetti bolognese which I haven't had in years, and it was so light and flavoursome. All in our company raved about the food. The atmosphere was so warm and welcoming, and best of all its BYO, so it really is great food with great value. read more
