Looked up what we could find near our Airbnb and landed on Fond! The pictures of the food looked super tasty and we were pretty excited to go. The excitement dies when you sit and see the menu. None of the great looking foods you see on Yelp are on the menu anymore. All the bento boxes, oysters, etc. are gone. It was super disappointing. I noticed at a few Maui restaurants that have done this which is honestly a bit annoying. Thinking you've found a place only to have an entirely different menu than what you came for. Either way, we made it work. My fiance ordered the burger with the Bbq Sauce (can't remember the name), the fries from the appetizer menu and I got the Ahi Poke Bowl. The shared fries were great. Crispy and the sauce was tasty. I enjoyed it for the most part. My fiance said his burger was really good. The BBQ sauce was leaking off the sides and it looked like a well made burger. My ahi bowl was fine. The fish tasted fresh but was lacking some flavor. Maybe a little more shoyu or onions could've helped. Not impressed but it wasn't bad. The staff was nice too. We did the Sunday night Chefs counter and loved it! Intimate evening with Chef Jojo, 3 staff and 8 total seats. We really enjoyed getting to hear the stories behind the tasting menu dishes, his overall culinary perspective, and how nothing goes to waste in his kitchen. Menu changes every two months so menu below reflects Jan and Feb from what we heard. We loof forward to visiting again to see what Chef Jojo comes up with next! Even with the reservation, the staff required us to wait 15-20 min after arriving to be seated. This was interesting since there weren't a lot of patrons in the restaurant. After the wait, we were finally seated. We ordered a variety of appetizers, including poke chips, Caesar salad, and PLT lettuce wraps. All the appetizers were good but nothing amazing. For our entrees, we ordered a number of keiki burgers, the highly recommended fried chicken, the sirloin steak with broccoli, biscuits, mac and cheese, and a variety of sauces. Overall flavor was great on meat and veggies but the sirloin had a lot of tough inedible pieces. Kids loved their burger/fries meals. If your kids are small, burger is shareable. My husband ordered the mahi mahi and he enjoyed the flavor but the portion is pretty small. If you have a big appetite, opt for something else. Our first time visit while we are in Maui. We ordered the Seared catch of the day which is Mahi Mahi, Seafood Tsunami and Crunchy Kale salad and Hibiscus Lemonade. The food are so delicious. The Mahi Mahi is moist and flavorful. You don't even need the tarter sauce. The seafood tsunami has Ahi Tuna with spicy sauce and kick to it. It also has soft boil seasoned egg, fish and shrimp. The crunchy kale salad is yummy. We are glad we visited and had dinner. Had dinner with a friend on Saturday evening. Started with the PLT Pork Lettuce Wraps (4 per order - only one left in the picture ). Thought it needed some sort of sauce before biting in; but once you take a bite a pop of tomato marmalade comes through and you realize that no additional sauces are needed. A well balance appetizer. I had the Special-New York steak. The steak itself was cooked to about medium, I believe. The steak was good but what took it over the top was the beurre blanc(?) and the grilled onions. The onions were grilled just enough to get the perfect sweetness. The side of fries were good and crispy but not great. My friend had the Seared Catch. The Mahi Mahi was cooked to perfection. Garlic shrimp was exactly that- heavy on the garlic, deliciously so. However, it could have done with less butter/oil as it got to be too heavy. Poke was good but had too much soy sauce in it. Generous portion size and fresh fish though. Pork was also generous on portion size but too salty. All dishes came with rice (good) and slaw (delicious and light without being salty). The quality of the food and service here is excellent! My family and I ate here three times during our trip since we loved everything we ate so much! The food is consistency delicious and some of our favorites that we ordered were the chicken katsu bowl, the paniolo burger, and the flip-n-out burger. Went here for dinner. Reservation at 7- seated pretty quick, but basically took over 10 minutes to get water. The food was pretty good, the flavors good, well seasoned. Started with the chicken bites. Loved that it was crispy because of both the breading and still having the skins attached. Very juicy and tender. The house ranch was herby and creamy- delicious but the BBQ sauce tasted like a basic BBQ sauce. Tried the calamansi daiquiri. I had high hopes, but the cocktail wasn't icy cold, it was... cold in a sense it was clearly shaken with ice, but wasn't "ooo refreshing" cold. Like it say for a few minutes before I got a sip. The flavor was all there though! Ended up ordering the tsunami (2)- the portions were totally off from both bowls. While I got a generous portion of fish (inch thick), the other bowl got less than 1/2 the thickness, yet same cut size? A generous scoop of ahi poke, just drizzled with a basic spicy mayo. The pickled cucumbers was good, but think that sets it apart from anything you can quickly put together at home in 5 mins. Looked at the dessert menu. Ended up passing when I saw it was just local ice cream you can buy at the store, or store ice cream with warmed up chocolate chip cookies or the burnt cheesecake. I remember reading that F.O.N.D. stood for Feeding Our Neighborhood Daily when they opened up back in 2019. Today, the name has evolved, paying homage to the culinary term which refers to the caramelized bits and drippings of browned food found at the bottom of the pan which when deglazed, forms the base for the dish. ATMOSPHERE: Located in the Napili Plaza, some will remember this as the old Koho restaurant. Totally redone, the space is airy and contemporary with a big chef's counter in the middle, small bar off to the side and low tops throughout. MENU: A mix of Asian, American and local Hawaiian fare. They also have an exclusive Chef's Counter menu ($140 p/person) which happens every Sunday with two seating times, 5pm and 8pm, which we got to experience. The menu rotates every two months. We were treated the January/February 2023 menu entitled "Pele & Poli'ahu", Hawaiian goddesses of fire & ice, respectively, which was five courses. BEVERAGE: Napili Bae - $10.00 This vodka-based citrus quencher was so refreshing, I had to have three! FOOD: We started off with a refreshing amuse bouche Lava Flow Popsicle, a combination of strawberry, pineapple and coconut flavors reminiscent of a sorbet. First course was Pristine Kusshi Oysters, artfully decorated with spicy sriracha pearls that looked like fish roe and seasoned with mignonette (shallots, pepper and vinegar). My first experience with raw oyster years ago wasn't very pleasant, but when in the hands of a professional chef, made a world of difference. Mildly briny with some heat. Small balls of hush puppies accompanied, great for putting out any fires on your palette from the sriracha. Second course was a moist and delicate Kona Kanpachi with a nice and crispy skin, served over a creamy vichyssoise (pureed leeks, potatoes and onions). I wish I had a bigger piece! Third course brought on French Maui Onion Soup. Filipino-inspired pandesal bread chunks replace traditional croutons. The soup was a tad salty, my only complaint of the experience. The entrée was an Australian Wagyu Ribeye served over sizzling rice. I personally would never order a wagyu steak due to its fat content but it was very good. Some in our party commented the fried rice could've used more seasoning but I thought it was perfect and complimented the savory steak well. And finally dessert which was Spicy Chocolate Lava, an airy cake with coconut ice cream drizzled with a spicy strawberry sauce. Very good. SERVICE: Chef and owner, Jojo, was gracious and professional. He, along with his apprentice, Shawn, did an excellent job at explaining and showcasing the dishes being prepared. Eliza took great care of us with drink service. TIP: The chef's counter experience now is totally personable and focused as the rest of the restaurant is closed for the evening. IMHO This review is for the Sunday Fond Chef Counter dinner that we enjoyed in January. This is a Sunday evening private event for up to 14 people, with two service times: 5 p.m. or 8 p.m. Call to book your reservation. I think I booked two months in advance. This is an epic food experience for the foodie lovers. Chef Jojo curates a new 6 course meal every two months for the lucky diners. The cost is $140 per person, and optional wine pairings with each course for an additional $10 per glass. This special dining experience was our choice for our one "big spend" during our Maui vacation. It did not disappoint. I even tried my first-ever oyster slurp! I was very hesitant when I saw it on the pre-fixe menu but decided that I had to at least try it. I am so glad I did! It was amazingly delicious and the oyster itself was very soft and tender to the chew. (When you make your reservation, you are asked if you have any food allergies so that the Chef can accommodate you. Chef Jojo thoughtfully made sure that one couple's special requests melded seamlessly with his menu.) We were slightly underwhelmed by the Wagyu Ribeye, as its seared top crust was too hard to cut into. We had to turn it over in order to slice into it. However, we didn't waste a bite! We weren't having a lot of vegetables and my wife ordered this. It was delicious, felt very clean and refreshing and had a nice complexity in flavoring. Fond Chicken Bites: We noticed they did fried chicken take out and must be known for it so we ordered this as an appetizer. Damn, it was good. The skin was crispy but the bites were still tender, the best thing is no bone. I don't think I've ever seen my kids eat so much chicken and I appreciated the "normal" BBQ and ranch sauces, nothing crazy and just a good house made classic. Fond Seafood Tsunami: Ahi Poke, Seared catch of the day, 3pc Shrimps, Furikake Rice, Namasu, Charred Lemon, Umami Egg. This was amazing and like a fancy version of a poke bowl. Unassuming from the outside as it is located in a sort of strip mall. However the interior is nicely done. Inviting yet elegant yet rustic... sounds weird, but it's fabulous. I highly recommend reservations here and those aren't even that easy to come by. That says something. I ventured in here during lunch and yes I made a reservation, even for the off hours here. I had a glass of Brut and the garlic shrimp bowl. The bowl comes with steamed rice, and a ginger sesame slaw as well as marinated cucumbers. But while all thos things are quite tasty, it is topped with the most amazing garlic shrimp. You can see the tiny garlic pieces sticking to the shrimp, which are perfectly cooked. You know it is an art to cook shrimp to get them done all the way through without overdoing it and ending up with a little rubber shrimp. let's just say these are perfect in taste, consistency and presentation. Everything else in the bowl compliments each other. And while it doesn't look very big, the bowl more than satisfied my hunger and I can put away some food. I highly recommend getting a bowl for lunch here. Nice little bar area as well as other seating options. Outside seating available. Ample free parking in the lot out front. read more

Service was very friendly so I feel a little bad leaving a less than ideal review but honestly the food itself was closer to two stars than three. I had the Maui steak, and unfortunately there were so many inedible pieces of chewy and stringy gristle inside it was not good. A third of my steak I had to spit back out, which is gross and I had to hind under the bed of overcooked rice. I ordered my steak one temperature below what I usually eat at (I normally like medium so ordered it medium rare) which was good since as other reviewers mention, the steak continues to cook on the cast iron. Restaurant is pretty big and has plenty of parking. Overall I left disappointed and I came into this knowing that most restaurants on Maui seem to be overrated so I wasn't expecting to be blown away, I just wanted a decent meal. The steak was disappointing because it was tough and overcooked. Skip it. But the flavors were great, especially the buttery chimichurri and sauteed broccoli. Tried them for the first time. Greeted by friendly staff and a lovely, casual space. The menu is small, but everything we had was excellent and reasonably priced. We started with the fried chicken bits and Brussels' sprouts in adobo. The sprouts were nice and tangy. Chicken was crispy. My wife had the shrimp lettuce cups for dinner. They were very tasty and more than she could finish. The rest of us had the Seafood Tsunami-6 oz of grilled mahi, 3 oz of poke, 3 grilled shrimp, with pickled cucumbers over rice for $32. The greens were delicious local greens dressed in a light vinaigrette. The salad had chopped sliced hard salami, pepperonchini, fresh sliced cucumbers, and topped with baked garbanzo beans and grated parmesan cheese. The salad was large and refreshing. We also ordered the daily special 16 oz rib eye served on a bed of sauteed onions with a side of mashed potatoes, green beans with a peppercorn au poivre sauce. The steak was cooked a perfect medium rare. The au poivre sauce was a perfect compliment. The whole dish was so satisfying.
