The first rule of Folkes Home Services is: nobody at Folkes Home Services knows what they're doing. The second rule of Folkes Home Services is: they will never, ever call you back. It's January. My heater dies. So I call Folkes. They send a technician. This technician has the experience level of someone who just learned that furnaces exist. He gets on his phone. For an hour. One full hour listening to a stranger describe your broken heater to another stranger who apparently has the knowledge this stranger was supposed to arrive with. "It's your propane line," he says. I call the propane company. "Folkes always blames us," they say. "It's never us." But they check it out. It's not them. It was never them. So Folkes sends another technician. This one also looks like he was recently introduced to the concept of HVAC. You try to explain the problem and he says (out loud, to a customer, in a house with no heat) "I'm listening, I'm just very tired." The second technician calls the first technician, on speakerphone. They try to fix it together. At one point the first technician is singing. Singing a song, on speaker, in my freezing house. The second technician diagnoses the problem as the pump. Folkes doesn't have the pump. They don't know when they'll have the pump. They'll keep me posted. They do not keep me posted. This is the part where you realize that "we'll keep you posted" is just something people say, like "your call is important to us." It's verbal wallpaper. It means nothing. I wait a few days. I lose patience. I order the part myself. It arrives the next day. I hire a different company to install it. Turns out the pump was fine. So now I've paid Folkes to not fix my heater, blame my propane company, sing in the basement, have me spend $400 on an unneeded part, and disappear. Somewhere right now a Folkes technician is on the phone with another Folkes technician, and neither of them is calling you. One star. And I want you to know that star cost me something. read more

It is long and painful, and involves me having to involve the building inspector and deputy building inspector for my town for assistance after they almost caused my house to burn down with inadequate gauge wire, and also left my furnace in service mode preventing the fan from turning off, and abandoned me by refusing to return to correct it. Our AC stopped working and Folkes has no technician on call to come out and service it. We called over an hour ago and their answering service told us a dispatcher would call us back with a ETA of a technician to come out tonight. After 40 minutes and no call, I called again and got through to someone at Folkes. They said the answering service was incorrect and that no one would be available to service our AC. We bought this brand new AC system from Folkes two years ago and we also have and pay for an annual service maintenance contract with Folkes. And yet they cannot get someone to provide service to us when we most need it. Disappointed doesn't quite express how we feel. The most they could say tonight was that a dispatcher would call us in the morning to inform us if/when a technician can come out. This is not how to treat a loyal customer who spent a lot money and purchased a new system. read more

Crooks, charged me for a new system that I never needed and they never return any of my calls

I rarely write reviews, but my experience with this company has been so consistently unacceptable that I feel obligated to warn others. In March 2025, we had an issue with our boiler system and called Folks Home Services of Poughkeepsie, NY. What should have been a straightforward repair turned into a 5-6 day ordeal. During that time, one of their technicians either rewired something incorrectly or outright damaged the control "brain" of our boiler. Instead of taking responsibility and fixing the issue properly, we were met with delays, confusion, and poor communication. Eventually, a master technician and a manager came out and performed what can only be described as a makeshift bypass just to get the system running. It never felt like a proper or professional fix--more like a temporary patch to close the job. Fast forward a year later, and we're dealing with another system failure--this time involving a bad valve. When we contacted them again, the technician who came out spent hours trying to figure out the wiring because of the previous work done by their own team. That alone raises serious concerns about the quality and documentation of their repairs. Then comes the worst part: after all of this--after the original damage was caused by their technician--they quoted us nearly $2,900 for repairs. No accountability. No acknowledgment of their prior mistake. Just an estimate that feels completely unreasonable for the work being proposed. Customer service has been just as bad as the technical work. Communication is defensive, dismissive, and at times outright disrespectful. When I spoke with management, the tone felt confrontational and more focused on deflecting responsibility than resolving the issue. Even more concerning, during our initial experience, one of their employees was verbally aggressive toward my wife. That should never happen under any circumstances. Between the poor workmanship, lack of accountability, inflated pricing, and unprofessional behavior, this has been one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a home service company. I strongly recommend others proceed with caution and consider alternative providers. read more

This review is to revise my original 5* Google review which was based solely on the completed job and the plumber who completed the job. I needed a toilet repair. I purchased the necessary parts and called Folkes Home Services. I have had them service things in the past and the mechanics have done their jobs satisfactorily. I initially wrote a positive review based only on the plumber who repaired my toilet. Later, I reviewed the bill. The bill was basic not detailed. I called to find out why so high and was told it is what they charge for this type of repair. I must say that I feel the bill for coming to the house, installing MY parts, installing a connector hose (THEIR part), about an hour here, and flushing to see that it worked should not have been $380 . I'm told the dispatch fee is $89, plus I have a maintenance contract which apparently doesn't cover this. I did get a $38 discount which was 10% of the bill as I had a $40 coupon. So, in writing a fair review for you, the public, I hope you'll be aware that the fees charged seem very high and you might not need a maintenance contract. Please, read it over carefully before paying for it. read more

I was not prepared to replace my HVAC system, so when it suddenly stopped working and leaked through my basement ceiling, I was forced to replace it. I googled a few companies but Folkes Home Service has a same day service available and I was not charged for the appointment. Dillon was great, gave me the news that I did not want to hear but I made the decision to have Folkes replace the unit and the compressor. The next week I had service trucks at my home. About 9 hours later I had a fully running HVAC system. Matt was great and the electricians were great. Very happy with the service. read more

This place is such a ripoff. I called them at 3:30 on a Friday. They said they could send someone out, then cancelled and put me on for the next day and said it would be 8am. Guy shows up at 10. Then I get charged close to $500 for a clean out that took them 5 minutes. Use your local plumber and avoid these guys like the plague. I'll never use again. We called for emergency heat service during below-zero temperatures. A technician came Tuesday, removed a part from our boiler, took a $700 deposit, and promised to return by Wednesday or Thursday. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we called multiple times and never received a single call back. No updates. No technician. Nothing. Our pipes froze before Friday, and we had to go out twice to buy heaters and multiple propane tanks just to unfreeze them and prevent them from bursting. I have a child under two in the home and the house was freezing. Another HVAC company came out the same day we called and fixed the issue--before this company even followed through on their promises. They still have not returned the $700 for work that was never completed. Taking a deposit, removing a part, and ghosting a customer during an emergency is unacceptable. Three strikes and you're out. Have really tried to give these guys a shot. 1) Was having an issue with my furnace and full stop these guys had no idea how to fix it. Had to use a different vendor. 2) Had these guys inspect my plumbing -- they tried to push literally $10's of thousand of unnecessary upsells on them 3) Asked them to do a super simple job -- fix a leak and add a spigot. After waiting three weeks for my appointment, taking the day off to wait for the plumber, they cancelled my appointment because I didn't call back the dispatcher within 15 minutes of them calling me to confirm (it took me a whopping 50 minutes) Trash company, buyer beware. read more

I had someone come out to check out my water softener. He told me that it would have to be replaced and the cost would be $5400. We've only had it for about seven years. The company was FOLKES. I decided to get a second opinion I called ideal water and he said that my water softener is in perfect condition and he charged me $135 to check it and make sure everything was working correctly. He said there is nothing wrong with my water softener. I am appalled at FOLKES. They wanted to take advantage of me and I will never call them again. read more

FOLKES installed a new A/C system. When they left (around 6 pm), they told me that everything was running smoothly. Hours later, the indoor temperature was still 86. I called FOLKES. I explained that the air pressure coming from the vents felt weak and that the air was not cold. It felt like how air from a fan feels. I was not only told that this was typical, but that I should just be patient. I texted, left vm, and after 9pm, got the manager, Ann Marie on the phone. She assured me that there was nothing wrong with the system. She said that tests that were run while the workers were at my house proved that it was running efficiently. As I continued to sweat, I asked for a small window unit just for overnight for my bedroom. She told me that she couldn't make any promises. I never got one. Everyone I was in contact with said that they could get someone out to me in the morning. By noon, I hadn't heard from them (clearly wasn't a priority), so, once again, I had to remind them of their promise to send someone over.No response from FOLKES until after 2 when they said they'll "reach out" to see if they can get a tech. The timing seems coincidental...it was right after I had posted a video review on the internet (thank you, social media) about their failure to do their job. Of course, I still haven't heard anything. There were other issues that I don't have room to write about, but it's the poor customer service piece that I am most disappointed in. How can FOLKES just drop a customer when they are telling you that the system has failed?! How can you gaslight a customer when you are not physically in the home and the customer is? So what made them change their mind? Nobody believed me last night but now they do? Ann Marie, you said that my A/C was working great and that I just needed to be patient. How long does it take for a brand new condenser to cool 700 square feet? It's been 21 hours and I'm still sweating. But what do **I** know? I'm just the paying customer. I heard that Folkes used to be a family business until the owner died...then the dynamics changed and it became a greedy corporation (Apex). I will consider updating this review if they make things right. But this is my first experience with them and I am NOT impressed... read more

We have had nothing but disasters with this company. Surprised they are even 3 star! When they installed the AC, they placed a duct right next to the reurn. they placed ducts not where customary but rather where it was easy for them. they left my ceiling a patchwork of grilles. I was stupid - I signed a service contract with them. A month ago I needed service and and the besy they could give me was more than two weeks out. Two days before the service they called and said they had to reschedule! This was a Thursday and they offered a weekend at additional cost. Very disappointed with Folkes' disrespect and lying. We had a serious heating problem with a handicapped individual at our house in winter. Called to schedule an appointment, was told 8 AM - 12 PM window. No calls, nobody showed up. We called their office, was told that someone was going to call within the next 1 1/2 hours. Now, next day, still no call. Would advise others to be very careful about potentially using them as this is a recurrent problem based on our and other people's experience. I recently upgraded my baseboard electric heat with a Mitsubishi Mini Split system. I had 3 estimates done and selected Folkes to complete the project. From calling to arrange for the estimate, through the detailed interaction with the salesman, Billy, to the installation day (just a couple of days later), it was seamless. My decision to have this work done by Folkes was supported by the knowledgeable, professional, personable, and detailed estimate. Making a significant financial decision can be intimidating, all of the estimates were comparable in cost. Two main reasons steered my choice; a friend's recommendation who had Mini Splits installed by Folkes in 2019, and the Folkes labor warranty. 5 years far exceeds the competition. While no one wants to consider any issues occurring, it is reassuring that they stand by their product and service. I apologize for not remembering everyone's name (the electrical force), but I truly appreciate the timely, neat, and efficient teamwork ( even with my interruptions to ask questions). Nick and Matt are a terrific team. They did what they said they would do, when they said they would do it, and how they said they would do it. Their work was neat, respectful, and skilled. Nick's knowledge base of his trade is impressive. Both of them instilled great confidence and are excellent representatives for the company. I felt comfortable asking questions and recommendations. The weather was not our friend during the install, way below freezing temps and snow did not deter a single step. The best indicator of future experience is past experience, so I will be entering a maintenance agreement to keep my system running smooth! read more

If your A/C can be fixed same day with parts on the truck this company is OK. If they have to order parts , don't hold your breath. They will let you hang and not communicate with you as to the status of your service. The following is a explanation of my rating. I had used Folkes prior to my second request for service. They were quick and made the repair the "same" day. My second request for A/C service was a complete disappointment. Granted, they responded quickly and diagnosed the problem. The tech said parts were needed: blower motor and controller and would take 3 to 5 business days to get the parts. I was fine with that. From here , things went downhill. After not hearing from Folkes after 10 business days I called their office. Was told, the parts were still not in. Asked as to when they would be in only to be told " when they get here we will call you and schedule an appointment ". After 20 business days I called again. Was told that the parts were still not in. Asked to speak to the service manager. He was not available , but would call the next day, which he did. Excuses as to why they didn't have the parts from no one followed up, to the parts are on back order. He would call me back same or next day to give me a status update. No one called. At this point I had had it. I called and told him he was fired and refund the monies we had paid for a deposit. The monies were refunded quickly. I found another company that responded to my service request the same day. They diagnosed the complaint, ordered the parts, called me 2 days later that the parts were in. Next day had the unit up and running properly. All this in 3 business days. Plus their office was in constant touch with me as to the status of the parts order and installation. Further, the cost of the repair by the second company was one third the estimate given by Folkes. Will never recommend Folkes for A/C repairs. read more

I wish there was a ZERO rating possible. We got an estimate for central air 2 weeks ago and chose Folkes to do the work. At that time we were told it would be a week and the work would start. A week later... the day of the install... NO SHOW, NO CALL NADA. We finally called the office and was told no they would not be coming etc. ok... Gave them another chance... the following Monday the install manager comes and spends over an hour mapping out the job. At the end shakes our hand and says "this is def doable just gonna take a few more days than we thought Ull be hearing from me or my service manager in a day or 2 for finalization". 2 days later we call and had to leave a message. The SALESMAN calls us back to say "sorry they have informed me that they aren't doing this type of install right now but possibly in Sept"! So now we have already done all our financing thru Folkes with jt on our credit etc and now are going to have to try to find another company etc. Folkes did nothing but give us a runaround and WASTE OUR TIME. Granted we did get to invoke the part of our paperwork we signed that if they don't install when promised they give u a $500.00 check. Well thx Folkes for the $, but you STINK at customer service. When u do leave a message NO ONE calls u back. The last service I had last summer was great, Danny was a great tech. This year is a totally different story. The service manager extremely rude, demeaning to me, insisted I needed another unit. Did not want to hear what I was saying. It also took many calls for an appointment, when finally someone called back I should have been made aware they do not carry the Freon needed any longer, and would not be able to recharge, if that was what was needed when asked about the system. They were unable to charge my system knowing it was old when appointment was made. I have a service contract that was purchased last year with Folkes under a different management. It is useless now, and they will not refund. May Dustin RIP. He would not be happy the way business is being ran now. If they want to keep customers, they need to be more customer friendly, and knowledgeable. I am very disappointed, have been a Folkes customer for many, many years. read more

2nd and last time I use them. Unprofessional (cant remember his name). Super expensive and $125 just to walk in the door and they dont put that towards any work you have done. Cleaned the soot out of the furnace and got soot footprints all over the floor, area rug and carpet leading to the oil tank. Black soot everywhere. His hands were LITERALLY BLACK, filthy. When he was done and was handing me the tablet to sign, I said feel free to wash your hands, sink is right there. He said no, thats ok. So everything he touched I had to clean his filth off of. THEN he had the AUDACITY to tell me that he wasnt going to be able to get a haircut and shave for his kids graduation that nite and that was only to work until 11. (Mind you, my appt window was between 8 & 12, he got here at 11). And thats MY fault how? Dude ya shoulda taken the day off! Also told me water heater was broke that I should replace it, I said no, he put (supposed) leaking pipe into a bucket and told me I'd need to empty it at least 2x a day. They literally had me buying a new furance or very expensive parts... I called another company and got a second opinion.. All Seasons to inspect the poor work and service contract by Folkes.. Nothing was wrong with the furnace except for the Folkes service.... Showed up 11 hours later after a tech serviced my furance poorly. The tech claimed many parts were broken and needed reapir.... Beware of this comapny... Never leave them alone with your furance. Literally- they will take good parts out and put bad ones in... BEWARE of Folkes Heating & Cooling. Service Tech Dan came to my home and charged me just under $250.00 dollars for a yearly service on my furnace on November 25, 2020 the Tech didn't put the furnace (stack pipe) back properly the pipe wasn't even screwed in and was hanging upon his return. Dan also hit my relay switch (10 times) to make sure the reset button "didn't have a short" (you should never do this) google this procedure, never hit this switch more than 2 times unless you want to break parts for money and create service calls. I was told the thermostat was broken today after the furnace had an small explosion last night and Folkes furance repair never showed up for emergency service called in at 3:30am. When they did arrive--11 hours later---Folkes sent the same tech back after I told them to send someone else.... Thats a bad sign.. Folkes wanted to cover their tracks... Dan forced fuel into my furnace by doing 10 resets... The furnace had air (sucked) back into the system because the stack pipe wasn't secured properly with screws.... Pictures showing the hole left and pictures of the new screws after the Nov 25th appointment. Folkes will never back their work or service contract because they come to our homes to break the parts and sell us a new furance...The Folkes Heating & Cooling owner told me-- we don't need (you) we have 2000 other customers.. Let me add-- they won't take calls and still continue to hang-up. My yearly service maintenance was $250.00 dollars. Let me add thats 125 dollars more than any other company.. Its not really a contract-- its what they charge for the yearly cleaning. Folkes will never honor the contract. Dan wanted to replace the oil pump $500.00, relay switch $495, thermostat repair $300 beside payment for today's service call which I refused to pay for....Besides on November 25, 2020 the furance was inspected and serviced every part... But-- my furance--just happened to have a (small explosion) from poor service. Bottom-line---Folkes Heating and Cooling wanted me to buy a new furance.... When- I called and asked for a copy of my contract-- The office girl (Wanda) sends me a new copy with just lines as signatures. I originally signed this agreement electronically.. The agreement is double typed so you have no idea what's covered.. Folkes told me 15% off repairs they didn't even honor anything they stated was in the service contract.... Today is Dec 3, 2020. I CALLED them at 3:30 am no tech ever came.. I asked to have a different tech-- to receive a fresh opinion--they agreed but than sent Dan back to my home to try to convince me to buy new replacement parts or a new furance.... Trying to convince me-- how honest he is... My tech was Dan Bien-Aime. He showed up 12pm and never even signed the service ticket. His boss was in a his wireless ear piece coaching him through the service and my anger... I would never do business with FOLKES HEATING again.. Not because the tech, is a born liar, because the owner was disrespectful and has no communication skills... The whole experience just a nightmare. Folkes has poor customer service and the owner has no class, besides being a rude narcissistic (animal) on the phone... Did--- I raise my voice-- (yes-- I did)-- but don't disrespect (me)-- when I'm the customer and your ripping me off..The only discount-- I asked for was my money back-- for the service contract.. The owner of Folkes Heating & Cooling----will never back his service contract or work or lack of it.... . FOLKES HEATING & COOLING HAS a service agreement that's better to wipe "pooh" with...... I asked Folkes Heating & Cooling tech to leave my home and take his bullshit with him. The entire company is a scam. I have a navien wall hung unit, I was charged $1690 to replace a part that a tech told us needed to be replaced as well as $119 for servicing the unit. After having the tech come back with the part he told me it can not be replaced and I need a new unit. They want to charge $9780 to replace a boiler that is under warranty. The boiler typically costs about $3000-$3500. I was told I would get the cost of boiler back after 12 weeks but labor would be $5000 to $6000. Now they are refusing to give me a refund for the maintenance and repair that was NOT PERFORMED, due to the boiler needing to be entirely replaced. We contacted them many times and they always promise to have a manager call back and never do. We keep reaching out to get a status of our refund but they keep pushing it off and passing along the message to another. When I did finally speak to a manager, who was extremely unprofessional, she told me they will not give us a refund because we are "not moving forward with them." We also spoke to a Tyler, who stated that if we cannot afford their labor rate that "we should find another company that would do it for cheaper." The experience we've had with this company has been an absolute nightmare and headache. Please if you need work done search for another company. This is going to be a bit long and the bottom line is that Folkes provided high quality FURNACE service before and after the buying decision was made, completed a complex install professionally and cheerfully, at a fair price. My cousin lives in Poughkeepsie and I help her with homeowner issues as they come up from Atlanta, Georgia. Since I am not onsite I have to depend on photos to understand problems. Folkes came out on a frigid day within hours of a 'no heat' call to determine the existing unit was irreparable due to a cracked heat exchange, plus other issues on a 30 year old furnace. After performing a sizing review, Stephen worked with us to get a new furnace within our budget. Due to the frigid weather, Stephen hand delivered and strategically placed several space heaters so we could avoid a pipe freeze under sinks. That was a relief! The installers showed up and within the day, disconnected, removed and installed a new Amana furnace. Everything was done in a professional and workmanlike manner, based on the photos I saw.
