Entrance to restaurant.

No reservations required we walked in and were seated of course it is mid September. Great looking restaurant very clean white table cloths lots of specials, our waitress ms Cathy was unbelievably attentive. We had the eggplant appetizer with basket of bread, a passion fruit martini yum!! My friend had the cobia and I had crab stuffed flounder these entrees were totally satisfying in appearance, texture taste and generosity of portions. Of course dessert was lemon cheesecake with a blackberry sauce perfect!!

Clams in white wine sauce

All of the food was very delicious. I highly recommend the in house made ricotta with honey and almonds and the clams in white wine sauce. We really enjoyed our drinks and had a great birthday celebration. Will definitely be back!

Cucumber cocktail- I forget what kind but it was gin based

Absolutely phenomenal meal and ambiance! It was a scorcher so the abundant air conditioning was much appreciated. Restaurant decor is fresh, and a pleasant mix of "artsy seashore" and "artsy southern". We were seated right away (but go early, by the time we left a line was at the door) My cocktail was a refreshing gin based cucumber drink. For our entree, I had the Thai curry with shrimp and it was perfectly seasoned, just the right amount of heat. Vegetables were clearly fresh, shrimp cooked just right. Service was fast and very friendly. We are here our last night on island and had it been the first we would absolutely have returned.

Super cute building. It should be a puzzle!

Bottom Line: A neat building with stylish decor, attentive staff and excellent coastal cuisine. Admittedly my husband and I had planned to visit the Back Porch Restaurant but when we found they were closed on Tuesday nights, we ended up at Flying Melon Cafe. For starters, I love the building's exterior. The exterior make it looks old but its a new-ish construction and that is more obvious per the polished interior. (I heard a rumor this lovely historic looking cottage was a cool $2M.) I'm a sucker for anything with marquee lights which the Flying Melon Cafe has. Plus, I like their whimsical logo. Very cute. The inside consists of a bar, several spaces downstairs and an upstairs. Despite being cut into several rooms, the restaurant is still a tad loud. I did not venture upstairs but I did admire the beautiful craftsmanship of the gorgeous handmade spiral staircase. As far as food goes - everything was really good. My husband and I feasted on the bread, clams casino, Ocracoke clam chowder, Triggerfish and flounder. The Triggerfish was fresh and excellent and a recommendation from our flawless waitress, Karen. My husband and I also both really enjoyed the plump clams topped with cheese and salty bacon-y goodness. The Flying Melon Cafe makes their desserts in house so I am bummed we didn't plan ahead and save room to try one. Service was great. On a Tuesday night in August the hostess estimated that the wait time for two would be 30 minutes and it was exactly 30 minutes. Our waitress was attentive, friendly and precise. Overall, we had a very nice meal and experience.

Kids enjoyed their meals. My steak was over-cooked. Staff and chef said it wasn't. I guess I was wrong.

Had the crab cakes. Best I ever had. Service was a little slow. Might be short staffed at the end of summer.

Was not expressed with the food and seemed over priced for the quality. Service was good and they have a good beer and wine selection.

The food was just okay. There are better options on the island. Menu is a little dated and behind the times for fine dining.

Our waitress was from New England and we couldn't get her to understand the difference between NE clam chowder and anything else. We wanted NE clam chowder. Cream base. The soup of the day was a clam soup with a clear stock. We asked for the cream based clam chowder. She brought the shrimp chowder. Full of corn and potatoes. No shrimp. We asked and she said 'you wanted the cream base' to which all of us relied that we said the cream based CLAM chowder. If they didn't have it, she never said they didn't have it. She brought out the other broth based soup of the day and I cannot believe how BAD it was. It tasted like the stock deglazed a cast iron pot with scorched bacon in it. Sour and metallic. Just foul. The flounder of the day was fine. The Mac n cheese was bland. Husband ordered onion rings but what she brought were seriously overcooked. I can't believe she brought them to the table. Hoping we'd eat them? She took forever to come back and we didn't have to say much. She knew. If that apparent, why serve it?! Pricey crappy dinner. Would have rather spent that or more on better service and food just down the block.

Excellent food, service, and vibe! Hands down our favorite…read morerestaurant on Ocracoke Island, NC. My wife and I ate at Dajio twice during our 4-day trip--once for lunch and once for dinner--and both meals were outstanding. For lunch, I ordered the shrimp tacos (three generously filled tacos packed with flavorful shrimp) and my wife got the fish tacos. Both were delicious. She's a bit of a margarita connoisseur, and she gave theirs two enthusiastic thumbs up! Save room for dessert--the fried banana bread is an absolute must. It's incredible. If you're visiting Ocracoke, make sure to put Dajio on your list. Highly recommend!

Pimento cheese lacked flavor and the oysters were over broiled making them dry and hard to get out the half shell. Fish special was Mahi and I ordered it grilled and it came beyond overcooked. I let the SA know that broil didn't need to kill the fish again. I'm not certian she understood English well, but it was not communicated to kitchen or Patrick our server. Patrick asked why we didn't say anything and got pissy about it, Patrick's check back on the main course was before we had taken a bite and then the next table check was by the young lady. Way too late by the time Patrick came back at the end of the meal. The coleslaw side was inedible, flavor was off. Overall it was just an okay experience and we left hungry.

We ordered a variety of dishes: the cold Italian sub, spicy chicken wings, Greek salad with blackened shrimp, blackened fresh fish sandwich, and blackened shrimp dinner. COLD ITALIAN SUB The cold Italian sub came with chips and was flavorful and satisfying. Wish it had more seasoning and spice, but it was good nonetheless. SPICY CHICKEN WINGS The spicy chicken wings had a nice kick, but weren't overwhelming. Would've been great if they were more flavorful, but they were fried nicely. GREEK SALAD The Greek salad with blackened shrimp was fresh, with perfectly seasoned shrimp that added a great smoky depth. All the ingredients were fresh and crunchy. Feta wasn't overwhelming, just perfect. FRESH FISH SANDWICH The blackened fresh fish sandwich, also served with chips, was a highlight with its flaky, well-seasoned fish. SHRIMP DINNER The blackened shrimp dinner, which came with garlic bread and cocktail sauce, was another standout--generous portions and bursting with flavor. The garlic bread was delish and went with the shrimp, which was cooked to perfection. Super tender and juicy. Service was fast and friendly, making the experience even better. Overall, Jason's delivered on both taste and efficiency, and it's a spot I'd happily return to for a quick and delicious seafood fix!
