Just to clarify, this restaurant is close to the ocean but you won't have a view of the ocean when dining here. It's surprisingly spacious inside with plenty of seating/tables for large parties. Food: generous portions. My husband ordered the shrimp and I had the fish tacos. The tacos require assembly. I wouldn't recommend them on a first date, as they are a little messy to assemble at the table. All of our food was fresh and prepared well. We also had the grouper bites as an appetizer. Came on a Wednesday night for dinner. We were seated immediately. The dining room was large and set up to accommodate several large parties as well as smaller tables around the perimeter. The ambiance totally met the tavern theme with wood beams and stacked stone pillars. We started with the crab bisque which I will say unequivocally is the BEST crab bisque I've ever had. It was creamy with good chunks of crab and a little cheesy with the Parmesan on top. I would have sat there and eaten bowl after bowl if they'd have let me. For my entree I ordered the coco Loco (coconut) shrimp. It was sweet and crispy and cooked well. The hush puppies were soft and flavorful and the cold slaw was on the vinegar side and refreshing. I had the Thai coconut curry, which was good but not great - it lacked Thai flavoring really, and I couldn't taste any coconut; it tasted more like soup. Wow! This place was fantastic! The grouper bites are a must-try--absolutely delicious. I wasn't a fan of the dip, but my husband loved it. The shrimp and grits were incredibly rich and flavorful. We stayed in a house my parents rent for a week in Rodanthe ... with no vegan food anywhere! My dad picked this restaurant which was such a lovely surprise with vegan items clearly marked and not throwaways either. I had the vegan crab cakes and they were delicious We ate on the patio, got a same day reservation for a party of 9, good food choices for the kids, and an epic playground adjacent to the patio so adults could kick back and enjoy some amazing cocktails. There are so many fresh, local options and they even incorporated vegan food into the menu which is fantastic! YOU MUST MAKE RESERVATIONS, even if there are only two people. When my husband and I tried to get a table, they told us it was a 2 hour wait. We were very lucky to find two seats together at the bar. It wasn't ideal, but we made it work! I returned to this spot for another meal. The grouper bites and a pound of steamed clams were ordered as starters. The grouper bites were fried and served with a chipotle ranch sauce I believe. There was also a heaping pile of cheese on top. These were solid. They were a little too soft and not as crispy as I would have liked. The clams were extremely small but tasty. The melted butter obviously enhanced the overall flavor. I also tried the hush puppies again and they were what I remember, not great. For a meal I split the Baja fish tacos and sesame encrusted tuna. The tacos consisted of blackened mahi filets with garlic lime butter, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, cheese, rice, cilantro sour cream, and salsa. We also opted for guacamole which was an additional charge. These were build your own tacos. There was a lot of all toppings. There were at least 5 filets of mahi so additional tortillas were needed. The mahi was very flavorful. All of the toppings appeared very fresh. The tuna came with seaweed salad, rice, wontons, and a cilantro soy sauce. The tuna was perfectly seared, and the cilantro soy sauce was a great touch to the pieces of tuna. The seaweed salad was not my favorite, but it did not matter because of the tuna. I also tried the mushroom raviolis. There were 8 normal sized ones to an order that came in a yuzu poblano sauce. These were very good. We ate here last night and the meal was very good. My wife and I had the Red Snapper Special. The fish was blackened and tasted great. We also had the tuna bites for an appetizer. They were great and the sauce they were served with also was good. As a side they served Parmesan green beans. These tasted good, but it was pretty obvious that they were frozen which is why I am giving them 4 stars instead of 5. Once again, we did not make reservations but when we asked to sit down outside they sat us right away. Weather has been very nice here and with COVID, you would think outside seating would be more popular but it seems to be our secret weapon. The server was attentive and friendly. We've eaten here twice now and the food is overall very okay. For starters we had the fried pickles and poke nachos which were both okay. Nothing exceptional about those two items but still enjoyable enough. We also had the grouper bites which were the stand out starter and would recommend. The fish tacos and the shrimp and grits were the stand out entrees we had. The seafood paella was disappointing but not bad. The deep sea trio we ordered was blackened but the seasoning was just lacking on all items: the mahi, the shrimp, and the scallops. The scallops were cooked perfectly and very soft in the center and were the highlight of the dish. The shrimp and mahi however needed to be seasoned more. The fries were very good though. Hush puppies and coleslaw were okay. Service and ambiance are great though. None of the food blew us out of the park but nothing was terrible. You must go here, period. The grouper bites are incredible. Light, crispy, and perfectly fried with parmesan. Worth a trip to the restaurant on their own. The atmosphere is both great for a date night spot, but we also saw families here. My husband and I each loved our entrees- the curry was generous in size, and loaded with an amazing selection of vegetables, including napa cabbage. The fish tacos had perfectly cooked blackened mahi, with well cooked jasmine rice. Our drinks were on point, an old fashioned (and one to go!), and a pina colada. This was our first time here, but won't be our last. We would have gone a second time, but they were still in their winter schedule, and closed on Sunday and Monday nights. Delicious! read more

Dining out isn't a big activity on The Outer Banks. But for those that get stir crazy inside their vacation rentals, going out for dinner is a nice change of pace. When the 11 of us wanted to venture out and not worry about cooking dinner we decided on Pangea Tavern and I'm happy to report it was a decision we did not regret. Located within the Koru Village complex next to the Avon Pier (apparently it's America's Pier), the Tavern sprawls with plenty of space inside (bar and two dining rooms) and out (beer garden, play area for kids, and cornhole.) When the 11 of us walked in there was a slight wait to get tables together but otherwise we had no problem being seated on a quiet Wednesday evening. We were surrounded with an interesting combination of kitsch which included hand painted sharks that hung from the ceiling and walls lined with bedazzled brassieres. The food from the self described "global menu" came out fast. We started with multiple orders of fried pickles, whole spears that were breaded just right and stuck together just right. A universal highlight of the meal. The Crab Bisque was rich and creamy but besides the chunks of crab at the very top, tasted more like a cream of mushroom than a seafood soup. I was particularly excited for Bayou Creole Shrimp and Crawfish Pasta, I love me some cajun-style pasta. However the dish left something to be desired. The gouda topped dish tasted kind of bland and the crawfish was MIA. I would have like to see the cajun seasoning come out a little more here. A number of us also ordered the Thai Coconut Curry which came out in heaping portions and offered a good amount of heat when you order it medium. With good sized portions and a nice, clean, yet homey atmosphere; Pangea Tavern is a good option when you are looking to mix up your stay on the OBX. read more

We came to Pangea for dinner on a Friday night at about 8 pm. I was worried there wouldn't be seating for 5 when we arrived with no reservations, but we were at a table within minutes. Our waitress was great--super laid back and sweet. She recommended a drink based on my tastes and even had the bar make it less sweet. It was delicious. The atmosphere was very relaxed and there was live music which was nice and mellow (mostly acoustic) and I found myself singing along to nearly every song. We had the fried pickle appetizer. They were nice and crispy and the dipping sauce was so good--not sure if it was wasabi or horseradish mixed into it but it had a nice heat going on. My husband and I had the crab bisque. Very tasty, could have been warmer. Our daughter had a cheeseburger and fries. Our boys had chicken fingers and fries. Didn't taste their mains myself but they seemed to enjoy. But those fries...omg. They were perfectly fried and the seasoning on them was so good. My husband had the fish tacos. "The mahi mahi was cooked to perfection". He was very happy with his food. I had the sesame seared tuna which was excellent. The tuna was cooked just right, the sauce and wasabi went well with it. The seaweed salad was yummy. The rice was pretty good (slightly over salted, which took away from the flavor of jasmine rice, but really no big thing). Out of the five places we ate at on vacation down here, Pangea Tavern was our favorite. Great service, great food, great vibe. We will definitely be back next summer. read more

Baked Oysters Rockefeller: "House recipe of 6 stuffed fresh shucked oysters with baby spinach, dried onions, hollandaise sauce, lime juice and applewood-smoked bacon topped with parmesan, and North Carolina Gouda cheese." It was good, mainly tasted the saltiness of the parmesan. Flavors from other ingredients didn't come through. Seafood Au Gratin: "N.C. Shrimp, plump North Atlantic sea scallops, and crabmeat in a creamy cheesy mirepoix sauce over penne pasta and topped with torched provolone and parmesan. Served with garlic bread". This was a bit disappointing, not creamy, just watery cheese soup, not much flavor to it. The scallops and shrimps were the only good thing about the dish. read more

After the host sat us at our table, saw my wife was a bit chilly and asked if she was cold--which she always is--and immediately turned up the a/c to accommodate! I've been to this place several times over the years, and I really want to write a better review for it. The mood and vibe of the place is really pretty good, especially on their back patio if you catch it on a cool night in the summer. I tried calling to make reservations several times during the day but the phone rang and rang and rang. It finally picked up saying that the user had not set up their voicemail: So much for a reservation. So we decided to show about 15 minutes before 6 o'clock, hoping to beat a little bit of the dinner rush. We were told the only available tables were out on their back patio, and it was a cool night, so we agreed to eat there. It really is a lovely space. We waited about 20 minutes before we were seated and during that time I heard several customers come in and complain about the phone number. Folks who wanted to make reservations could not and were frustrated that they had to wait. Many walked out. After we were seated other groups with reservations were seated after us, and yet they were being waited on before us. It took 20 minutes before anybody showed to our table to ask about drinks or appetizers or even greeting us. Now I understand that they were very busy, but if you can't treat all your customers equally, then you shouldn't seat them. Nonetheless, our waiter finally came over and apologized saying they were very busy and we were more than understanding. Certainly wasn't his fault. We ordered the fried pickle appetizer which we've had before and it is absolutely awesome with the wasabi ranch dressing. We also ordered the spinach artichoke dip with pita, which is also very delicious. For entrées my son got the burger with fries, my wife and I each ordered salads and a bowl of the crab bisque, and my daughter ordered the special a green curry chicken served over rice with deep fried green beans. It took a while, but our food arrived after our appetizers and we began to eat. My daughters took longer for some reason. It was the special after all but I'm not sure why it took longer. My daughter mentioned that her food was not hot so I asked if I could try it. It wasn't even warm it was on the verge of being cold. Also, it was chicken. I told her not to eat it and we were going to send it back. It took at least five minutes before anybody came to check on our table or that we could even see a wait staff member to ask them to send it back. In the meantime my daughter was hungry so I shared my salad with her. Our waiter finally showed up grabbed the dish and took it back to the kitchen but after five more minutes we were all mostly done eating. I went to try and find our server to tell him we no longer wanted the entrée. I ended up at the bar and talked to the manager and told him that we didn't want the entré at this point: we weren't jerks about it, it's just that we were done eating and it wouldn't be fair to my daughter to try and eat her dish after everyone was finished eating. That's not how a family dines together. The manager understood and said he would let the waiter know. After five more minutes, the waiter showed up with the hot plate and I had to awkwardly explain to him that I had already spoken to the manager and that we were no longer interested in the dish. He seemed a little upset saying it only took him two minutes to get the dish cooked, and while I'm sure that's correct, nearly 20 minutes had elapsed since we received the dish and he brought it back hot. When he brought the check back he was more apologetic, not that he needed to be because I understood his frustration. He was certainly more than accommodating at that point and even took the drinks off our tab. I really felt bad for him. We left him a very healthy tip because I know none of this was his fault necessarily. It seems like a lot of restaurants down here are struggling right now, and I understand that, but again, if you can't seat and serve your customers then you probably should not. I've had plenty of great meals at this place and hope they get their act together in a future visit, but this one was certainly disappointing. Update after reading Pangea's response: Despite what the response below says, on the day I posted this review, the outgoing message clearly said the voicemail was not set up, and LEFT NO OPTION TO LEAVE A MESSAGE, so what should a customer think when the phone rings over and over with no option to hear an outgoing message or leave a voicemail??? I don't understand the logic of calling a customer back when they cannot leave a voicemail. The logic is faulty. In addition, the presumption that a customer shows saying they tried to make a reservation when they really just didn't bother or were somehow irresponsible is absolutely insulting. And "have a nice life"??? Really? That's not quite a mature response from the business owner. I've adjusted my rating accordingly. read more

This has become another staple in our search for spots that can delight the vegan (me) and the omnivores (partner & kids) in our family. I personally had the vegan paella l, the vegan sopes, and the curry (added tofu to both), and they were both very delicious! My partner had the seafood paella and the fish tacos, and my kids had the kids meal and the Tavern Burger (and some of the mocktails). Our server even did some balloon animals for the kids, and our dog got his own water bowl on their dog-friendly patio. It was a delightful time! read more

He made great recommendations and all of them were wonderful! The apps we had were the oyster Rockefeller, fried calamari, and stuffed cabbage rolls, and fried pickles. I would highly recommend them all. They had a special that was red drum and Cajun oysters. I have not had anything so wonderful in quite a long time.
