Breakwater never disappoints. I had the crab cakes which are packed with meat and just enough stuff to hold it together. Other had the fish tacos which were a hit and a really large portion. Service was really friendly and made you feel welcome. The building seems to have been redone since were last there and it was nice. Really amazing food!

The best restaurant in Hatteras area Outer Banks, NC. The 2 hour wait was well worth it. Crab stuffed mushrooms are to die for and the poppers. Main course favorite was shrimp pesto and. Scallop tortellini.

Came here on a Sunday evening when they opened for dinner. Service was enthusiastic and quick. Enjoyed our server's Halloween costume too. The live music was a nice touch for dinner service. We started with some drinks. I had both a pineapple lemonade and a channel marker from the drink menu while my husband just had bourbon on the rocks. We then had the seafood sampler for an appetizer and everything was prepared well. For entrees my husband had the fresh catch special and I had shrimp & grits. The fresh catch was fried well and the fries and coleslaw were good as sides. My shrimp & grits had such good flavor that my husband was sad he hadn't ordered it also. We'd definitely come back here again.

Very nice sitting outside. We watched the fisherman charters come in at 5:00. Delicious crab appetizers and drinks were great too!

I was really impressed by the variety offered on the menu, including the number of things that were either gluten-free or could be prepared gluten-free. Our server was friendly and attentive. Our food came out quickly. The servings were very generous and I definitely could have split a dish with my hubby.

I was able to watch the ferry come in, and watch the sun getting lower and lower over the water. Stunning. I did not catch my waiter's name, but he seemed very familiar with the locals who sat at tables near me. I ordered the bacon wrapped scallops off the starters menu and the spinach salad. With that I had a water and a bottled beer. The food was delicious and plentiful. I had already spied the lemon cheesecake on the menu and told him when I ordered my dinner that I was going to finish with that and a coffee. He said he'd make sure that the pot was brewed for me which I thought was nice. When the bill came, there were two prices listed, one for credit and one for cash instead of saying that they up charge for credit sales they were it that they discount for cash sales, smart business! The parking lot is gravel, plenty of parking and well lit. The restaurant itself is upstairs and as far as I know, you have to climb the steps to go up. I could be wrong, but I didn't see any alternatives. I can imagine that during busy season, reservations would be required.

Now, I look forward to it after a too short week of cooking on electric in a beach house. We like it so much that we drive 35 miles one way to get there. The fish fry starts at 5 and runs until 6:30 or until they run out. We were in line at exactly 5:05. At 6:15, still not to the door, one of the ladies came out and told the guy behind us that he would be the last person served. Thank goodness we weren't the next people after him, I'd have been beyond disappointed. While the serving line has always been a well oiled machine, it is always slow. You really can't complain when you know the hold up is the fish - they were frying it up as fast as they could clean it. You can't get any fresher than that. The fish fry is carry out only. We have learned to bring a cooler with us to keep our dinners warm while on our 45 minute trek back up the island. Once home, we passed out the styrofoam containers and plastic cups of sweet tea and finally dug in. We buy the large dinners where you get 2 pieces of fish, a scoop of potato salad and one of coleslaw and three hush puppies. The fish is whatever was running today and today it was blue fish. So good, so fresh, so worth the 2 and a half hour round trip. We rarely miss dessert and we NEVER miss dessert at the fish fry - it doesn't come with the meal, it's an honor system and it's a donation to the fire department. You never know what will be available, but it doesn't matter, everything is homemade and always delicious. Going to the fish fry means more to me than just good food - it's a tradition. No trip to Hatteras Island would be complete without it. Next time, I promise to be early.

The view and relaxing back deck is the only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars. It took a little longer for our waitress to great us from the start. They looked a little under staff so I get it. We ordered our food and drinks together because we figured better to speed up the process. She screwed up the drink order bringing an iced tea instead of a Chardonnay. Ok minor mistake. Then our food came out and my shrimp and grits did not have the sausage in it like the menu said. The grits were on the thinker side. Overall not bad but I wanted the sausage in it since that's the reason I got it. My wife ordered potstickers and she crab soup. The potstickers came out with no soy sauce or anything. So she ate them dry because the soy sauce never came out after we requested it. She also didn't get to try the she crab soup because the waitress spilled it brining it out. Our friend ordered the Tuna and liked it. Would recommended it. Our other friend order the crab Mac & Cheese and she crab soup. She loved the crab Mac & Cheeee! However, the waitress forgot the she crab soup so again she cannot say one way or the other if it's good. This the first time Yelp steered me wrong. This is not a 4 star restaurant until they get all the kinks worked out. Not sure I'd be willing to try them again.
