Unfortunately the excellent location and view was not enough to overcome the very average meal we had for lunch. We returned the shrimp cocktail because it was mealy and not fresh (note: waitress was very nice and understanding about the shrimp). With that location the menu needs to be enhanced and upgraded. We ended up here because hatteras soul was 1 1/2 hour wait. We should have waited. I don't mind trying new places and know they will have growing pains when they open- however, this was one of the worst experiences in a while. The view and relaxing back deck is the only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars. It took a little longer for our waitress to great us from the start. They looked a little under staff so I get it. We ordered our food and drinks together because we figured better to speed up the process. She screwed up the drink order bringing an iced tea instead of a Chardonnay. Ok minor mistake. Then our food came out and my shrimp and grits did not have the sausage in it like the menu said. The grits were on the thinker side. Overall not bad but I wanted the sausage in it since that's the reason I got it. My wife ordered potstickers and she crab soup. The potstickers came out with no soy sauce or anything. So she ate them dry because the soy sauce never came out after we requested it. She also didn't get to try the she crab soup because the waitress spilled it brining it out. Our friend ordered the Tuna and liked it. Would recommended it. Our other friend order the crab Mac & Cheese and she crab soup. She loved the crab Mac & Cheeee! However, the waitress forgot the she crab soup so again she cannot say one way or the other if it's good. This the first time Yelp steered me wrong. This is not a 4 star restaurant until they get all the kinks worked out. Not sure I'd be willing to try them again. read more

Nicely done! If I had read the reviews before getting to this restaurant, we might have stayed away. Glad we didn't. Starting with the appetizers of the bangers & mash and the homemade shrimp potstickers, we weren't disappointed. The flavors were great. Our entrees for the family were the chicken po'boy, classic burger, fish & chips and the starter taco salad. All were delicious. Waitress was very good, friendly and knew the menu well. Our group of five came in hungry, looking to acquire a filling meal and perhaps a drink or two. Thanks to the Open Water Grill, we got what we came for. Everyone agreed that their meals were excellent. The drinks were on point and the dessert was a nice finishing touch. While the prices are a bit steep (but no higher than anywhere else you'd find on the Outer Banks), I would certainly recommend dining here. Thank you! read more

Open Water Grill is a hidden gem located in the Hatteras Landing shopping center! The staff was friendly and very accommodating. The food was fresh and cooked to perfection. The chef even came out to ask how we enjoyed our meal. My two kids enjoyed chicken fingers and grillled cheese allowing all 4 of us to have a nice dinner. If you go toward sunset you won't be disappointed by the view as you watch the sun set over the Palmico Sound. Next time you are in Hatteras make the Open Water Grill one of your dinner destinations. read more

this was our second visit to the Grill and both times we have had a great experience. The location is great and you can hit the Wreck Tiki bar afterwards for just hanging. The food was interesting and had a slightly different take on the standards. From the mussels, to the seafood dip (instead of the crab standard), the calamari and Thai rolls, all received thumbs up from our crowd (and we were a big one). Two of us had the blackened scallops which were really nice with some awesome couscous and the sautéed squash was the best I have had (I am not usually a fan). The salads were big and the seared tuna received an "excellent" from my friend. Kid quesadilla was super and nice selection for kids. Wine selection was nice as well. They have outside seating for drinks and when not to hot. I think more folks should definitely give this place a shot. It was excellent. read more

We ate at the Hatteras restaurant, and watched a gorgeous sunset. That was the only good thing about this place, I'm sad to say. We truly waited an hour for our food, and besides one large party, the restaurant had only 3 other tables beside us. There were 3 waitresses, but we had a sweet, but untrained hostess as our waiter. We had to point out the items on the menu to her so she could write them down. That was okay, but to wait an HOUR for our food and then to find it super salty and only average was really disappointing, given this restaurant's write-up. And, last, and least, I ordered a bowl of soup, and received a cup, but was charged for the bowl. When we'd finished our meal, they were closing down the restaurant--and we had arrived around 8:15 pm. Not a single employee apologized for the long wait. read more

We dropped in for lunch. The menu was limited because it was so early in the season (May 23). Seafood on the menu was frozen so I ordered a hamburger, which wasn't, and was quite good. All other restaurants in the Village were up and running, so why Open Water seemed to be so behind the curve was puzzling, especially offering frozen fish right on the water in a fishing village. I came here with my family. We came in and there weren't any other people I could see in the restaurant. We were seated and our orders were taken fairly quickly after we sat down, however, it took 2 hours for our food to come out. My dad ordered fish, and asked the waitress if it was cooked all the way and she said she didn't know and took it back to the chef, who said it was cooked, but put it back in the fryer anyways. I saw a few other tables send food back to the kitchens. He ended up getting sick on the drive home. The view, however, was nice, and my little brother enjoyed watching the ferries. read more

I wish this restaurant provided us a good experience but unfortunately it was very terrible. We were so hopeful, as the atmosphere was beautiful and the view stunning, but we waited for our food for over one hour from when we ordered. We ordered three lemonades, they were all out of lemonades...in the summer...in the OBX. So we ordered daiquiris, turns out they were out of that too. So settled for water. My father asked for lemon with his water. It didn't come. So he requested it three different times, finally the waitress brought over the end of a lemon over in the palm of her hand for him, not in a dish or anything, with her bare hands. We finally got our food- only 6 of 8 of us. Two of us didn't receive our dressing with our salads, just bare salads, and requested it but didn't get them until ten mins later. Two of our party didn't receive their dinners with the rest. One had to wait about ten mins for their salad, the other didn't get his dinner until we were finished with ours, it was that late. Needless to say, because of our ludacirous requests to get the food we ordered, we were given plenty of attitude from the staff. I would not recommend this location. read more

I really wish Yelp allowed a "no stars" review. My family decided on Open Water Grill after visiting the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse--big mistake. We ordered two things of the chips, salsa, guac, and queso, which came out almost immediately, however the chips were stale, the salsa had a weird flavor, and I completely gave up on the appetizer when I saw the guac resembled snot. After 20 minutes of watching the waiter and chef walk around the restaurant in circles--we left, not having even received our drink order. The waiter was completely surprised when we told him we were leaving and to not even bother bringing us the drinks, of which sat on the bar so long, the ice was mostly melted. He's lucky the person I was with was kind enough to leave a couple of bucks on the table to cover the cost of the chips, because I wouldn't have even bothered. In addition to the terrible service, the menu was over priced and very broad, which suggests they don't have a honed skillset. Not at all recommend. read more
