My favorite bakery on the island! This place is small but offers a wide range of delicious pastries, cookies, and muffins. If you want the selection, get there early, because they sell out of their top items quickly. However, even when we've gotten there a little late and some items are picked over, you can't go wrong with whatever you order. Everything I've tried is delicious and fresh! Forget all the rest. This is the place for fresh top quality baked goods and pastries. Get there early, everything is made fresh daily and they do sell out. Do we have favorites? Yes we do but then I would need to list most of the items in their case. Cheese cake is to die for. Don't pass up the baked hippo or the monkey bread. I am partial to the toffee cookies and my wife loves the blueberry scones. See our picture attached. That box went fast when we got back to the house. This place is a must when we hit the island and we usually stop there two or three times in one week. Do not hesitate but get their early. read more

Love this place. Small place but the vibe is right! The customer service is amazing and they are so welcoming. No matter how busy they are Kyle takes his time with you. Everything is wonderful here! Real almond extract is used in anything almond and really helps bring that almond/cherry flavor to the front! Molasses cookies are my favorite- remind me of my mom's. Locals call them a hangover cure because of the ginger. I just consider them fantastic. A must stop when visiting Hatteras Village. Get there early for best selection. read more

Strolled Into scratchmade smackers right before they closed. While they did run out of the stoner's delight cheesecake (get there early) I did get this delightful triple chocolate chip cookie and a chocolate chip pecan bar that weighed approximately 50lbs. Love it! The menu items, the way they painted the building and the owners, who seem great and like hard workers! We got the key lime croissant and apple pie cheesecake. The croissant is more cake-like than a true croissant but delicious! The apple pie cheesecake was perfect for fall on the chilly October morning we had it on our hotel balcony overlooking the water. If you're nearby, visit this place. Preferably at the beginning of your trip, not on your way out of town like I did. This place is AMAZING. As soon as I walked in I just knew it was going to be awesome. I was so excited that we ordered too much, but that just meant I got to snack on delicious homemade baked goods our entire drive home. I'm not mad. We tried the monkey (smaller than a hippo, obv), sugar crisp, key lime croissant, pumpkin danish, lemon muffin, and a chocolate brownie. I would describe my favorite/can't miss item here, but they were honestly all delicious. You just cannot go wrong with anything you choose, I'm convinced! I'm sad I found this place on our last day, as I would have been here every morning of our visit. Not only for the delicious baked goods, but the amazing customer service and chitchat. I enjoyed the insight about the delicacy of croissant baking, and the fact that you baked mini croissants as a travel snack for your upcoming vacay. Thank you guys for the experience! One morning I couldn't sleep, so I took a drive and found this place. I arrived around 5:30 am and I must say, THANK GOD FOR INSOMNIA! It took me forever to decide what I wanted, but I finally chose the cinnamon rolls, cheese danish and the stoner's delight cheesecake. Everything was out of this world, but the cheesecake blew me away! I knew I wouldn't be able to wait until I got back to the house to try it, so I asked Kyle if I could have a spoon! He was very friendly and funny! My only regret is that I didn't discover this place earlier in the week!! I will stop here every time I visit Hatteras from now until the end of time! read more

One might come to the conclusion that the Owner and Chef of Scratchmade Snackery, Kitty, has a PhD in Bakery & Pastry Arts. Four days a week--Thursday through Sunday--all pastries are made fresh from scratch. Arrive early to the quaint shop in the Village of Hatteras as they often sell out, especially in season. One look at the pastry case and you know you have a difficult decision or decisions to make. The Glazed Monkey (also known as a gift from the gods) is the perfect combination of chewy, crunchy, and sweet, which will put a smile on your face. You will want to buy extras of the Almond Oatmeal Toffee Cookie to enjoy a sweet tasty something later in the day. The Scratchmade Cinnamon Roll is unspectacular. The bold coffee is a perfect compliment to whatever you choose. The face you will encounter behind the counter is Owner Kyle. He provides helpful suggestions and may ask you challenging questions like what do you have planned for the reminder of the day. Most like my wife and I have no clue. Tasty! Yum! While visiting friends in town, we stopped to pick up a few bits to enjoy with coffee for Brunch. We tasted 5 varieties of the Scones (Blueberry, Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon, Lemon, and Plain). None were dry. First time for us in a long time to consume a properly baked Scone. For later in the day, several slices of Cheesecake Bars were purchased. These too were tasty and well enjoyed. An absolute stop for anyone with a "sweet tooth." read more

Pastry-wise, this is a solid 4+. The pain au chocolat is divine, with perfectly crispy crust and incredibly rich chocolate filling. And the cheese danishes! Amazing! This place does not make the filling overly sweet which in my opinion is perfect. The other baked goods are fresh and delicious too, you will not be disappointed here. Now, the minuses. I was picking up a large order for several people and one of the items did not make its way into the bag. I'm willing to assume this was an accident - but it still shows less than adequate customer care. So double check your orders before you head out the door. And fyi for those of you with pre-existing conditions and covid concerns: the bakery does limit the number of people allowed inside and requires masks, but the workers themselves are not wearing masks. Not sure how important people may find this, but just a heads up to those trying to be extra careful read more

Ah.maze.ing! I have nothing but great things to say about this place! The owners are two awesome people--you gotta read their story on their website. On to the snacks...first, you MUST get Muff Nutz! So good! I only got two the first day & had to go back the next two days for more! Cinnamon Rolls are perfection (go back home & microwave it!) I had the Glazer Monkey which was such a perfect texture, a little crispy but gooey in the middle. Yum! The scones--I only tried the Chocolate Cherry, but it was the perfect texture. Hearty without being dry. Crispy on the outside & soft inside with the right amount of crumble. Love love love. We also snuck out with a piece of Apple Pie Cheesecake thanks to my husband, haha. What a find!! This place is so happy on the outside you're drawn to check it out! If you're a baked good connoisseur you don't have to look anymore. We were tempted to try everything but tomorrow is another day. We tried the scones, cookies, muffnuts, and a lemon bliss ball. The lemon bliss ball is a vegan treat! We also got cookies for an afternoon treat (they close at 2pm) after we get done at the beach. The bread looked fabulous. It all looked really really good! The people working were quite friendly and helpful. 2017 Update: Back for more this year. We stopped on our way to the ferry. We got a lemon scone and a monkey muffin. We noticed that they now close at noon instead of 2pm like last year. read more

Always make at least one stop at the bakery when we're down for vacation. They open at 5 am. Grabbed something for everyone in the family - cinnamon roll, blueberry scones, monkey bread. It came on at the end, but not enough flavor for me. Rocky Road - This was a rich chocolate fudge filled with marshmallows and walnuts. This was alright, typical fudge taste with a crunch from the walnuts. Will I go back? Definitely.

The view and relaxing back deck is the only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars. It took a little longer for our waitress to great us from the start. They looked a little under staff so I get it. We ordered our food and drinks together because we figured better to speed up the process. She screwed up the drink order bringing an iced tea instead of a Chardonnay. Ok minor mistake. Then our food came out and my shrimp and grits did not have the sausage in it like the menu said. The grits were on the thinker side. Overall not bad but I wanted the sausage in it since that's the reason I got it. My wife ordered potstickers and she crab soup. The potstickers came out with no soy sauce or anything. So she ate them dry because the soy sauce never came out after we requested it. She also didn't get to try the she crab soup because the waitress spilled it brining it out. Our friend ordered the Tuna and liked it. Would recommended it. Our other friend order the crab Mac & Cheese and she crab soup. She loved the crab Mac & Cheeee! However, the waitress forgot the she crab soup so again she cannot say one way or the other if it's good. This the first time Yelp steered me wrong. This is not a 4 star restaurant until they get all the kinks worked out. Not sure I'd be willing to try them again.
