This is a wonderful little place on the island. I went here for the first time a few weeks ago. It was my last day on the island and brunch was in order. As far as brunch goes, the service is great and I absolutely love the decor. It is bright and cheerful, not to mention clean. As a connoisseur of bacon, The Flying Melon has delicious bacon. I'm not too crazy about their potatoes, but their biscuits and everything else are wonderful. The eggs could be improved upon and be more warm and scrambled. I certainly want to come here again next year, if possible. read more

The wine list is excellent. That's about the end of the good things I can say. My husband ordered the mahi special. They neglected to properly trim the filet and left the dark portions intact. That plus slightly cool sweet potatoes does not add up to a $26 entree. Now the real problem (and the reason I just could not give 3 stars) is that my crab cake was absolutely, indisputably HORRIBLE! It was barely seared and tasted like mush -- the consistency of tuna salad. When our waitress took our plates it was obvious I had not eaten this nasty, mushy mess; but she didn't even bother to ask what might have been wrong. For the prices they charge, the food should be (at least) good. Unacceptable. read more

Delicious seafood specials and great service. Nice atmosphere. Recommend the ahi tuna if they are serving it. They offered an inexpensive rose that was refreshing for the summer time. I would suggest a clipboard so people could generate a waiting list. There is an uncomfortable rush towards the door at opening that could be avoided. read more

I've been to Ocracoke twice and both times I have come to this restaurant for dinner because our meals were that satisfying. they were prepared perfectly with excellent favors and the service is terrific. The golf cart rental place suggested we eat here so we gave it a try. even this time of year it was crowded but we got a seat at the small bar as we waited for a table. service was good and the wait was short. We ordered the fried shrimp and blackand mahi. My Mahi was just ok at best, the blackanding seasoning was disappointing. it needs a little bite but had none. A go box was used on it, but I helped finish off the dozen fried shrimp which was amazingly delicious. Service here is really very good. It can be a little loud inside but I would go back and get that shrimp. read more

Had the Mahi/Shrimp special with rice and it was delicious, as was the chicken Provençal and beef filet. Even the salad that came with the meal was very tasty. Our servers were attentive and efficient and the decor was cute and comfortable. It was a memorable meal and I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a special night out. read more

Don't miss this restaurant if you're looking for great food, lovely atmosphere and excellent service. The entire meal was delicious! We were advised to go a little early because it can get crowded. First off...great food and service! I've had a variety of items off the menu over the past 10+ years visiting Ocracoke and it has always been excellent. A couple new favorites include Crab w/veggie omelette (thanks Peyton) & the shrimp n grits. Love the new location and building! I hope Flying Melon is around for many many more years as I believe it truly is a GREAT place to dine on Ocracoke (breakfast, lunch and dinner). read more

My wife and I went for dinner on Friday, July 10th and everything we had from start to finish was excellent. We started with the Caprese Salad and the Ceviche and both did not disappoint. For our main courses we tried the Specials that night. The Parmesan crusted Flounder and a Wahoo special each delivered good taste and value. For dessert we ended with a Crème Brulee which was just perfect! Our waitress was very knowledgeable and attentive and we never had to look around to find her! Top notch Service and Food! We went to Flying Melon for dinner on an expectedly busy Wednesday evening. There were 3 parties ahead of us, and the hostess estimated the wait to be about 30 minutes. My husband checked on our status after about 20 minutes and the hostess offered to serve us in the lounge area where we were waiting. We were starving so we didn't mind. We loved that they were so accomodating. Service was excellent. We ordered the Mixed Greens/Granny Smith Apple Salad, Bluefish special, Scallop special & the Kid's Fried fish plate. Love love love this place! It's awesome! Best fresh fish on the island. Do yourself a favor and get there when they open to sit at the bar- bartenders are great and drinks are even better. The hostesses were not very helpful at all after telling us there was a long wait. Apparently there is a lounge upstairs but they weren't mentioning it to anyone waiting. They didn't tell folks to visit the bar either. We decided on our own to grab a table near the bar to avoid the wait. We were very glad we did. Service was prompt. We had the scallops and shrimp app and also the bluefish app. They were both delicious. We then split a grilled seafood platter and it was fantastic. I highly recommend this place. read more

One of the best meals i have had on the island. I"m a little upset that it took me so long to eat here. The menu was inventive but not intimidating. I went for the brunch, but am seriously considering going back for diner. ( I'll let you know). It was my first experience in Ocracoke when there were multiple things on the menu i wanted to try. The only complaint i have is the cornbread was a strange consistency but i live in Tennessee and i think it may just be a regional thing. All in all i would suggest you try this place the first day you get here so that you have multiple opportunities to try everything they have to offer. The dinner specials change nightly and my server was nice enough to tell me which seafood was local and which was sysco. Also when I arrived they told us there would be a twenty minute wait for a table, but there was plenty of room at the bar for immediate seating. read more

Best restaurant on Ocracoke hands down! We went three times during our stay this summer and it never disappointed. I highly recommend their sea scallops and grilled grouper entrees, and their key lime pie as dessert. Great service and great food! Will be coming back next year! read more

We ate here for breakfast in May and it was charming and had a laid back cool vibe. Great food (recommend the veggie omelette and also the sweet potato pancakes). Service was excellent -- the waiter very helpful about our visit to the seaside village. The price is not cheap but fair for the quality and portions. Recommend it. read more

This restaurant was the best experience we had on our whole Outerbanks vacation. The food was absolutely delicious!! My husband had the grilled seafood platter and it was to die for, crab cakes were outstanding. The service and ambience was great, martinis were interesting and good. So much potential!!! Our waiter and bartender were great. We had great flow though our kids' dinners and our appetizers, then we waited a ridiculously long period of time for our dinners. Our kids had been done over 45 min while we waited for our seared tuna and crab cake!!!! I was told a 'complicated steak issue with another party' caused issue. All of the food however, was fantastic. Tuna, clams casino and crab cake tasty. Kids Mac and cheese obviously of the kraft variety, which we eat all the time at home and the kids love. Need to figure out how to deal with kitchen issues to not have diners waiting so long for their main courses. read more

One of the best meals we had on our trip to the Outer Banks! We went for brunch. I had the special - a scallop and bacon omelet. My friend had a spinach salad. We were both very happy with our choices, and the prices were great. We probably would have spent close to double for the same meal at home in Philadelphia. I read many reviews prior to going in and really WANTED to like this place however food was just average. Inside was very quaint and clean and service was good. I got the rack of lamb which was recommended. Lamb was cooked to order but very bland and gravy was bland as well. Maybe if I go back I would order the fish which looked good. read more

Creative, always superb. Turns out the owners lived, worked and know the New Orleans heart and soul of what it means to create a food culture. Signature fresh seafood gumbo as well as many other optional seasonal dishes without the heat of NOLA cuisine. Ask the bar tender for his recommendation of mixed drink or wine tailored to your taste. This is a 5 hour trip from Raleigh, so not really a day trip, but every time we are looking at a weekend in-State, Ockracoke and The Melon are high on the list. We have eaten lunch and dinner there, and great deserts make good entrees even better. Breakfast is our favorite. Pan Perdue is truly fabulous, Crab and Bacon omelet outstanding, basic eggs done right. Service, like already mentioned, is a little clunky, but in a typical laidback island way. Four and one half stars would be closer, if it were an option. read more
