So, we got off the long ass ferry ride with a miserable sick toddler and decided we must get food. Where do I turn? Yelp of course! We tried this restaurant for lunch. This is a small dumpy looking place and there was a bit of a wait. Anyway, we finally got a seat and our server seemed annoyed that she had to serve us. Kinda annoying... I ordered the grilled fish sandwich, and the people I was with got the pork sandwich, and the cheese steak. We got the clam chowder for my son and they were kind enough to bring us a littler tiny bowl and not charge us. Up with the stars. Granted, it wasn't our server but the hostess that did this... but I digress. The sandwiches were decent. I wanted to like it so much because it was fresh fish... but it was just bland. The pork was so spicy you couldn't really taste the pork. I like spicy... but. well.. for some reason this didn't work. The cheese steak was tasty but the bread was anemic. This place was right across the motel we stayed at in Ocracoke. I've eaten here three times and the food was good all three times. I'm an egg freak, so that is what I got all three times. Their eggs are tasty. You can pick between potatoes or grits and you get toast on the side too. We were travelling with an Argentinian who had to have burgers for breakfast, because he could. He had that twice! The only disappointment was another friend's Canadian bacon that came with her eggs benedict. Apparently it was way too tough. The staff is very friendly and the decor is fun too. This place is outstanding. Family enjoyed the well spaced outside tables and awesome and friendly service. Food was incredibly fresh and perfectly prepared and presented. Don't let the "takeout" fool you, it is fine dining al fresco in COVID19 times. Tuna, catch of the day, the crabcake were all great. Fresh veggies on the side and great salads. Even had the spring rolls and the fig desert, all perfect. The cucumber gimlets were so refreshing. Went early to avoid the rush and got a table right away staff very friendly friend green tomatoes for app (3 tomatoes for 4 ppl). We each ordered something different Spanish mackeral good shrimp linquini good ( sm portions not a ton of flavor) interesting manicotti with tuna bolognese sauce.. very greasy tasted like sausage bolognese and lastly pork over rice good but salty. Absolutely amazing breakfast. 2 words, French Toast. It's thick cut delicious bread soaked and then deep fried, topped with a raspberry sauce. I can't express how good it is. I told the waitress it should be mandatory that if it's your first time, someone at the table must order it. I had the Corn Beef Mash, and it was delicious. My only complaint is that it was a bit warm in the restaurant and they didn't open until 9 for breakfast, wish they opened an hour or so earlier. My favorite spot on the island. Great decor. Great service. First visit was in 2010 on a motorcycle trip with a group of 8. They fed us well then and I had been waiting to go back since then. Great memories! On this trip we went in for a cup of coffee and dessert on a midday date before catching the ferry. Seating was perfect: a cozy couch along the bar at a window. Coffee was fabulous and although they didn't have almond milk, taking it black was just divine. The dessert of choice was a chocolate torte, which in and of itself was dense and delightful, but the pool of creme anglaise it came in was soupy and watery. I recommend they do away with the creme anglaise for this dessert and allow the torte to take center stage. It would hold up well on its own :) read more

We ate here once and it was great! The decor/ambience was Ocracoke typical, meaning kind of rundown/rustic but not quite charming. The service was well-intentioned and friendly but just overrun by demand with only two servers on for a busy Friday night. We had two drinks and dinner, dropped about $70 + tip and walked out fat and happy. My Special Ladyfriend and I shared a really solid, entree-sized spinach salad with caramelized onions amongst other things. We also shared the Crawfish Beignets, which I STILL say were a little undercooked/gooey in the middle but also quite tasty. (the best one was the one least gooey) My Fried Seafood Platter was the best I've ever had. Repeat: my go-to seafood dish, the big pile of fried seafood, the plate you're not supposed to get at a nice fish place, was THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. The shrimp were good, nothing special but good, but the crabcake was For Real. No, not one of those throwaway breadcakes sprinkled with crab residue but a REAL crab cake where you see and taste the crab in every single bite. Excellent. The big fried fillet was bluefish instead of flounder, a welcome substitution because bluefish is, to me, tastier than flounder. Really good. The scallops, however, were the Deal, like for sure the best fried scallops I've ever had by a factor or 3. I have no idea why they were so good, they just had a LOT more flavor than usual. My Companion in Life and Food had the grilled bluefish which she enjoyed but wasn't overwhelmed by. She preferred my fried bluefish (and she's not a fan of fried fish). The sides were kind of forgettable, because I've forgotten them. That, perhaps, is one area that could be improved upon. I like it when the sides are tailored to the individual entrees. We loved this place with our first visit a yr ago and couldn't wait to return. I called earlier on a Fri to ask if I needed rsvp at 5pm they said no so when we arrived we were told there was a birthday dinner and whole restaurant was closed for the night. We walked away disappointed and returned the next night at 5 and was seated promptly. We waited a good 15 mins for anyone to even come to table and ask if we wanted a drink. Service was slow and almost non existent. We felt rushed as others have stated here. We were in and out within 35 mins and $80 later before tip. Server even tried to take the bread basket and our plates before we were finished eating. The place was not busy only 2 tables full, ours and one other one. Don't understand the rush. We arrived right when the cafe opened for brunch. The menu was a bit small for my taste, but I love breakfast and like to have lots of choices in eggs, pancakes and the sort. Just disgraceful, salt and pepper can work miracles. Fresh cut fries were served with my meal, stone cold, disgusting. Fresh cut fries are for lazy chefs that don't know how to prepare fries properly. Our waiter was asked several simple questions about menu and had no idea as to menu contents and could not answer. Inventive cocktails; Delicious fish entrees prepared perfectly. The exterior view can make that first step in the door a bit intimidating but definitely worth the time. If your hot, in a hurry and inpatient go somewhere else. Really great space, really great food, really great atmosphere and staff. We go to Flying Melon at least once every year, when we spend a week on the lovely and magical Ocracoke. Their food never disappoints. If you eat seafood, you will have a wonderful selection to choose from. They do offer one or two vegetarian options, and they're good, but the place is really for seafood eaters, and they do that really well. That's the only reason for my one missing star, so if you're not a vegetarian, consider this a five-star place. (If I were asked what else to include on the menu for vegetarians, I would go with something like a wild mushroom ravioli or some really interesting veggie take on a southern classic, but I lack the imagination and culinary skills to make a rec.) The atmosphere is really great, I'd call it "open upscale Ocracoke." If you don't know Ocracoke, it's hard to capture what that means, but think quirky island, laid back, not stuffy, warm and friendly, with a mix of local color/accents and visitors from afar who have been charmed by the place, a mix of salty old fisherman culture plus artsy plus outdoorsy. It's a place where people bike or ride golf carts instead of drive, where paved roads end in some odd mix of sand and clay and crushed seashells, where you pass hundred+ year old houses and modern beach houses and fishing shacks. It's magical. And Flying Melon seems to bring all of that together in an open, airy space. I think I've only come across "unfriendly" once in the seven or so years I've been going to Ocracoke. When a storekeeper asked where I was from, and I answered "Manhattan," he said, somewhat derisively, "that's a crazy island, that place." To which I responded, "which is exactly why I love Ocracoke." We had a good laugh, and he shook my hand. That's Ocracoke. And Flying Melon is a must-visit place when you're on that crazy, wonderful little island. read more

AMAZING!!!!!!!!! The melon is awesome. It is like a little diner. If you go there for breakfast you absolutely must get the french toast! At every table there are a few crayons. The crayons are there for you to draw a flying melon on the paper tablecloth. Make your melon really imaginative. This place is horrible. Made a reservation on Sunday for a party of 12 for dinner on Thursday. We get there and they say it would be a few minutes. Get 8 drinks at the bar and 20 minutes later they claim they never had our reservation. Then they said we had to pay for our drinks. After their screw up!!! They didn't even care. How would I know large parties sit upstairs if I never made the reservation. Screw this place and their staff. Totally unprofessional, they don't keep reservations and their food didn't even look good. Go someplace else. read more
