We had scheduled to take him in just before we left, but right before that, there was a technical issue at the vet, which meant he'd have to wait two weeks to start treatment - this could make a major difference in the outcome. With such a short time frame, we were in a bind and starting to panic. Luckily, the vet recommended we call Samantha. That day, she swung by our place to meet our boy, answer our questions, and grab some of his favorite treats to keep with her for his transport. She contacted both the boarding place and the vet on her own to let them know what was up (and make sure that our buddy didn't get fed before his procedure because that'd cause rescheduling.) That made us feel like we could take the trip and get his treatment started. Day of the appointment, she arrived at the boarding place on time, took him for his treatment, waited to make sure everything was good, then brought him back to get settled at the boarding facility, plying him with treats and petting on the way. He needs a special halo harness because of his poor eyesight, and it was no problem for her to get him secured. She sent pics and updates as the morning went. That absolutely reduced our anxiety and made it possible for us to enjoy the trip. She's professional, proactive, responsive, and clearly loves dogs. Thank you, Samantha! They are not kidding when they say they guarantee availability for repeat clients. They have always been super responsive, kind, and reassuring in communications when I am feeling frazzled and worried about securing care at the last minute, and always ready to come in to save the day! Bella (Isabella) is not the owner but she runs the show day-to-day, I believe, and she is awesome, friendly, capable, and great at responding to messages. Depending on who does the actual service, I sometimes get photos and text updates and sometimes don't, but it has always gone well. Everyone seems trustworthy and like they are genuine animal-lovers. The only slight downside is that in the past they have seemed a little disorganized with invoicing/billing (repeat bills or not getting one at all) but now they have a new system that works very well. It also allows tips, which I appreciate, since I don't usually have cash on hand to leave as a tip. (Note for people new to pet-sitting services: you should leave a tip! I had to learn this.) Anyway as a single person, new to the area, and without a lot of people I feel comfortable asking to do favors for me, it is a great comfort to have this affordable service to rely on. Both Jay and Alyson came to our house for a consultation to tell us about their services and to meet the kitties. We got a good impression from them and their rates are reasonable so we hired them to stop by our house twice a day for eight days. What I loved most about working with Jay and Alyson was the fact that they sent daily updates on how the cats were doing and a lot of the updates even had pictures, which made us smile each time we opened their email. I could tell from these updates that pet care wasn't just a job to them but something that they genuinely loved doing and that they were enjoying the company of our cats. They took care of minor cleanups that our cats also seem to make and even took out the garbage when it was full of cat food cans so we wouldn't come home to a stinky garage. When we got home, our house was in clean condition and the cats seemed happy, well fed and taken care of. Although it wasn't needed in our case, it should be noted that Chico & Chums is also an insured pet carer which is a definite advantage over hiring someone like a neighbor to care for your pets while you are away.
