Okay, after two years of searching high and low, you can't get a better Vietnamese sandwich in Davis than Fluffy's. Not that theirs is gamechanging--it's just better than Sunrise's. Even more inarguable is the fact that you can't get a better donut than Fluffy's...okay, slightly untrue. The only exception is Sushi Nobu's warm, made-to-order sugar donut. But I'm not about to pay the price of a sushi buffet just for a couple of donuts. That said, Fluffy's is pretty much the best in the area at what they offer. The guy that works here is friendly, and has a lot of other food options if you're not in the mood for donuts. The Vietnamese sandwiches here are very popular, which I've been reminded of every time I come in during the mid-afternoon, only to find out that he's run out of sandwich ingredients for the day! (I'll cut the man some slack; he's a local, family-owned business.) But if you're there just before noon, it's a fine place for an inexpensive brunch--your favorite donut, a Vietnamese sandwich, and Thai iced tea...what more could you ask for? In particular I love their egg salad sandwich. My grandma used to make them for me all the time as a kid, and I have to say they come pretty close in comparison. From the Davis Wiki, people say their hours are 5am-5pmish, sometimes opening as early as 4:30am. Like with most donut shops, I don't really expect them to have much selection in the afternoon. I went here at 1pm on a Saturday in October 2008 and there were maybe only a dozen plain donuts left. But they were still fluffy and tasty! The Vietnamese sandwiches are $2.50 each, and are kind of sparse on the fillings. In half a sandwich there was 1 sprig cilantro, 1 slice ham, 1 slice compressed meat of some sort, 1 slice jalapeno, a good pinch of shredded carrots, some spicy sauce and mayo. Best donut shop in Davis! The donuts themselves are all very good, the location is easy, and the staff is nice. Each time I've been here is bright and early in the morning, and I am always excited to go in. The staff are energetic in the morning and always friendly. I've gotten a variety box a couple of times and was able to try a good amount of donuts, and they are all really good. My favorite thing here is the apple fritter though, it is huge and full of flavor. You get the full the donut sweetness, with lots of apple flavor and really good texture. A massive, week-long donut craving brought my friends and I to Fluffy Donuts, even going out of our way between classes to reach this doughy goodness. The donuts are made fresh everyday and they are open from 5am-5pm. The donut holes were tasty, but not particularly amazing. I love coming here whenever I need to study because it's nice and quiet. I don't know how people can study at Starbucks with all that buzzing and noise in the background, but to each his own. The owner is always ready to greet you when you come in. He's really nice! When I went in today for a Vietnamese sandwich, a kid was there instead of him. I don't want to bash on the kid, but he was making the sandwich without any gloves. The only problem i faced was they don't pick up their phone and if you go past 12 theres no one in the store (even with the open sign). I'm a regular at Pink Dozen, rather I was a regular at pink dozen. I would go there frequently despite Fluffy Donuts being closer to my home. Fluffy under the new ownership is a different story. For one, the donuts are really good. The texture and sweetness of the donuts suits my personal taste far more than anywhere else in Davis. The coffee is also very good, and the place is spacious and inviting. The real charm of this place is truly the new owner. To be sure, I'm assuming the man I see there in the morning is the new owner. He is incredibly gracious and polite, and very thoughtful. He is clearly very invested in making Fluffy donuts a welcoming and pleasurable experience for the customer, and has made some very welcome changes since taking over. They gave up. 945 am and there are 3 donuts left on a wednesday. Coffee: not enough light roast to fill my travel mug. When I point out they are out she insists I top it off with dark roast and refused to grab one of the other canisters behind the counter. Perhaps they were empty, but if they were that in and of itself would be an issue. I have been coming to this place for years, even back at its original location. The donuts here are pretty good. You have your standard fluffy donut holes! So always delicious. The Banh Mi is pretty mediocre. You get the traditional meats (deli ham, BBQ pork, turkey) it has the traditional pickled veggies but doesn't have pate. Once in a while, more specifically, once a year, I will crave donuts. As a hardened man with a discipline forged out of the hearth of Hephaestus, I am on a strict 300 Spartan-esque diet however, sometimes I reward myself with a little sugar disc. While the owner and I assume the father watching from behind, his 3rd or 4th grade son greeted me with more zeal and candor than many past store owners. I tipped my Nixon hat in respect. I knew this would be the boy who would take reigns of the fallen Krispy Kreme chain and resurrect it from the ashes. I ordered the old fashioned chocolate and mixed glaze donuts. He carefully ensnared it with his prongs and handed it to me and told me the price. I was very impressed with his maturity. That is why this place gets 5 stars. Instead of playing with action figures or playing pogs on a concrete schoolyard, he is here helping his pops and that tugs on my heartstrings. I hope when I visit Davis when I am old and grey and he is now a full fledge adult, I pray he turns Fluffy Donuts into a house of ill repute by then, a cashcow in the city of Davis. Easily the best donuts I've ever had, especially when they're fresh in the morning!

It's lunchtime on a wednesday. I'm stumbling out of class, clutching onto the wall as if it was my newest girlfriend. I'm coming off one of the worst colds I've had in awhile, mind you, and barely being able to breathe out of your nose in a stuffy room with a stuffy professor for 2 hours is not crackin. That means, 'not cool,' for you uninitiated folk. Anyways, I'm thinking to myself, "I gotta eat. NOW." Searching through the names caught in my mind's rolodex, I remember a name that always made me smile every time I passed by it on the bus: FLUFFY DONUTS. Fast forward 10 minutes later, and here I am, inside this fine establishment known as Fluffy Donuts. It looks a little like something out of an America long since passed away, the menu employing the use of letterings, much the way you would see on your old school movie theater. And then I see them. The donuts. Ever seen the movie, "Despicable Me" ? I could almost hear Agnes screaming, "IT'S SOOO FLUFFEEHHH!" into my ears. Still, being the health conscious college student I am, I also notice that this place offers sandwiches as an alternative. Yes, I know, it's odd. But the guy who owns the place is Asian, what else would you expect? (That's a little something called a joke, for you uninitiated folk. I'm Asian, too!) I order myself a tuna sandwich, placed at the modest price of $5, and then I watch. I never thought I'd have a moment of reminiscence in a donut/sandwich shop, but watching the owner make the sandwich the exact same way I would've back home was a thing of beauty. He wraps up the sandwich, puts it in clean looking white bag, and sends me on my way. He even put in a slice of pickle to go with the sandwich! Needless to say, the sandwich was delicious.
