Flores Cafe sits in a nondescript shopping center at the corner of Carson Street (x) S Wilmington Ave. A prominent tenant of "Car-Wil Plaza" is Starbucks. An additional landmark--"Malamalama Ole Lalolagi" Church, is across the street. Mexico is a large country. As such there are many regional cooking styles. Barriers to entry are relatively low; so, if someone feels that they have good recipes, they can open their own business. The plus side is that in Southern California, we have access to a variety of "Mexican" food. I have had many good meals in small family restaurants. But a lot of small restaurateurs don't have a lot of capital; as such, decor is an afterthought. While not polished, the owners of Flores Cafe have put a lot of effort into decoration. The interior walls are covered with portraits of entertainment personalities, with a Día de los Muertos overlay. It's probably worth at least one visit to go and see. Service at some smaller restaurants is sometimes wanting. The waiter and waitress were outfitted professionally in black jeans and black dress shirts. The table service offered was also good. On this occasion, I ordered the carne asada burrito; rice, with no beans ($12.99); covered in the red sauce ($3.99). With a Pepsi ($5.99) and tax ($2.40), my ticket was $25.37 before gratuity. The texture of the food on the plate was a bit rustic; but I think this is attributable to cooking style. I work right across the street from this place and had not yet tried it so I decided today's that day. I went early enough (11:15ish) prior to the lunch crowd and was the 2nd customer in the restaurant. I was immediately greeted by a server whom quickly took my order and brought chips and salsa to my table. I ended up ordering the two hard shell taco combo with rice and beans and a fountain soda. The food was ok (not the worst); however, very pricey: 16.99 for the taco plate and 4.99 for my fountain drink! With tax and before tip it came to 24 bucks! I definitely won't be eating here again. They're located in a small strip mall; the kind of place people might drive on by, but definitely stop in for some good food! We went New Year's Day, making sure we paid attention to their special hours. Walking in, it looks like a club, not a restaurant. I can only imagine how lit this place is at night and on weekends. The walls are painted black with neon murals painted all over. It was fairly empty and they had bachata loudly playing on one tv and a game on another. I ordered the #17 SHRIMP enchiladas combo plate to go. Although the flavors were good the portions were ridiculously small for the price. They used salad size shrimps and chopped it up to tiny pieces mixed it with vegetables for the enchiladas. I could not taste any shrimp only vegetables. The sides rice and beans portion did not even fill half of the container slots and the chips they gave us 6 chips SMH. I understand the food is expensive but if you are going to charge full portion prices you need to give FULL portion food and for this reason this was my first and last time patronizing this business. read more

I came on a weekday afternoon and the place was empty. Unfortunately the quality of the food and the portions have changed in the last six months. I'm the type of person who loves to support local business and I'm also willing to pay the price but when it starts to affect the quality and you start skimping on the portions, this is where I have an issue. The last time I came, I ordered a shrimp burrito and there were only three shrimp in it and today my tacos were very small but the price has increased. Spanish rice was delectable & fresh. Refried beans were perfectly soft and topped with melted Mexican cheese. The cooked shrimp was in the red sauce. The red sauce was seasoned perfectly! Not too much and not too little which flavored the cooked shrimp well. We ordered it to go so our plate came with corn tortilla and chips with salsa. This was my first time to this cafe so upon entrance your eyes are distracted by the art that covers that restaurant- and lit by black light (see pictures). The art covers every wall and ceiling. Music was nice and poppen, not too loud. I was so distracted by the art that it took me a minute to review the menu that was given to us upon entrance. We went on Monday evening and it wasn't that busy so we were greeted upon entrance, given a menu and ordered. Wait time for our order wasn't long at all and once I did place the order, the server gave us water while we waited. The only thing about this place is there isn't any windows but there is plenty of ceiling fans in the dining room. Note, the server who greeted us and took our order did speak English. He spoke both English and Spanish. I promise next time I go back I'll take a pic of the food. Lol I'm giving this place a 5 star rating because the food was amazing. Although we went for lunch, you can tell that the late night vibe is strong with this one. As soon as you walk in, your eyes really have to take time to adjust to all the neon paint murals and paint splatters everywhere. The food is really good, and the beans and rice taste like my Tia's. But make sure that if you're going to order something, you check the price on the menu. We made the mistake of ordering the ceviche tower without looking at the price. And it was a bit of a shock. But the food was good and they have a stage that looks like they have DJ or live music, so I think that that would be really fun in this atmosphere. They also have plenty of TVs to watch games. The only thing I would say is that their bathroom smelled really bad and we were one of the first customers there, so it's not like it was from customers going in and out all day. I was here with a group of friends and the atmosphere had a club dance groove vibe to it and the music was a bit loud, maybe because we sat too close to the DJ booth, speakers, dance area. Well because it was busy, our waiter wasn't attentive, our food did arrive Hot, pleasing to the eye and delicious. We got there at the restaurant this past Friday about 6:30 just before the end of happy hour. Although we don't drink alcohol and there was only one happy hour item to eat which was street tacos we passed happy hour. It was very loud when we went in one side when you first come into the right appears to be more of the party-goers that are drinking from happy hour and getting ready for karaoke at 7:00 p.m. . We sat on the other side where it seemed like there was more of people gathering for their little parties and get togethers for dinner and getting ready for the DJ that starts at 9:00 p.m. . So there's two loud things that are going to happen all at once. So we decided that we would just stay for dinner and leave not in a hurry though. There is a lot of seating available in this establishment for little parties and maybe something a little bigger if you reserve it and the tables and space to have your get together. The food on the menu is a assortment and most items are under $20. We chose the number six which was two enchiladas and taco with rice and beans. We chose credit before the tacos and for the enchiladas not much meat in the enchiladas and the tacos but they were so beautifully prepared and presented on the plate that I would not have complained about it although I am doing a review I'm just throwing that in. The platters are beautiful presented in a nice white rectangular plate that made the food look very appealing. The sauce on the enchiladas was tasty I could see that it was homemade and not out of a can and not overpowered in any kind of one particular flavor which I prefer I don't like too much of a one particular seasoning on my sauce so this passed for me as a plus. They sprinkled onions and plenty of cheese on the top of the enchiladas which I like because that's how my mom used to prepare them. The taco was very nicely presented and held up with some shredded lettuce so it didn't just lay flat on the plate and fall all over. The rice was average the same you would get almost anywhere else the beans were good although a little thick and pasty just because I prefer mine a little thinner and texture but they were okay. We ordered a small side of guacamole for the chips and salsa, the guacamole I didn't care for because it had onions tomato and lime and maybe it might have been some finely shredded lettuce also and it just wasn't to my expectations but it was just okay I didn't care for too much onion in it or too much tomato it takes the creaminess of the avocado away, I did not like the tortilla chips they are not the corn variety that I would have expected these are more of a thin brittle type of tortilla chip that seems to maybe have flour mixed in with the corn? Not sure but didn't really care for them. Our waitress was very friendly and checked up on us from time to time and we were served in a matter of a few minutes not a very long wait more people were starting to come in and order and I noticed their orders were coming out in a decent amount of time also. And their food look very good as well presented. The overall appearance of this restaurant is above what I would have expected, there's glow in the dark paint black lights but the fun eclectic appearance is wonderfully presented, and can accommodate a young to even an older person's taste for something different. read more

She really couldn't hear us because the music was way too loud. I understand that this place is big on their entertainment, and that is why I decided to try this place, but the volume was just too loud. The drinks were the worse drinks I've ever had. We ordered "cucumber margarita", a "mango margarita" and "lime margarita", they all looked the same and tasted the same, they were nasty, like if they just poured the cheapest juice mix and added a shot of the cheapest tequila with extra ice. Our beers were served room temperature and we also ordered a michelada, like the ones we had seen on Tik Tok with the shrimp and the garnish and the rim served in one of those traditional cups, NO, we got a sad looking plastic cup with Bloody Mary mix and the beer on the side. When asked the server about the michelada we saw ok TikTok she said "oh, you have to order it differently" ok HOW? Do we order it?? She said "not sure what it's called, but you should've said that you wanted that from the beginning"‍ Another issue we had was when we made the reservation, we had to pay $50 for the reservation and that was going to be credited to our bill. It was not. The next day I had to call and ask them for a refund because the bill was paid in full the day of. Very disappointed with this place. I did enjoy the music and the live entertainment that is the only good thing about this place. Also if you need to use the restroom, make sure you go before you have to go and remove your jacket. If you're in the area, this is a good place to try. We usually always get an order of the Al pastor fries and the torre buchona. Cant go wrong with either of those two. I think they've updated and IMPROVED their dishes. We've been a few times, and this last one in June the quality improved a lot. The torre buchona was fresh and spicy, the portion of it is good to split with another person. The way it's plated gets a little messy since it's a small plate but honestly doesn't really affect the dish as a whole. I do wish they gave more tostadas tho because it only comes with two. We usually just ask for more chips and salsa before it comes out that way we use them for the ceviche. The asada fries we get with Al pastor are really good too. The green sauce they put on top is 10/10. We've also had a molcajete as well. Definitely a good dish if you want to share with someone. Everything comes out nice and hot. Service is good as well, each waiter/waitress we've had has always been friendly and they're pretty fast too. Depending on the night you go they may have live music so it can tend to get a little loud. We have gone on a Friday night and in the middle of the week, and we prefer to go in the middle of the week when it's quiet enough to still be able to hear the person you're with. But if you enjoy live music, then this is a place to come check out on the weekends.
