I recently scheduled a difficult move. It was from a downtown LA 20th floor office building with many rules and insurance requirements. Monica from Flatrate was able to handle all the details professionally and quickly. Other companies were not. Her crew arrived on time with all promised supplies and equipment. The truck and crew handled every detail. They were fast and thorough. They cleared out every item in my office. This is by far the best moving company I have ever worked with. Update: So less than 24 hours after I posted the initial one-star review, someone from (I presume) FlatRate Corporate calls me directly. He reveals that indeed, posting the one-star got his attention, he has reviewed my case, and wants to make it right. The missing box has not been found but for this + all the inconvenience, they will refund me ~10% of my bill. For that (actually, finally taking corrective, "pro-active" steps to make right, although not really since it was in response to the review lol), I am bumping the review up a star; however it is still mind-bogglingly ridiculous how this company continues to operate with such shoddy customer service + quality. I cannot speak to their local moving service - and likely never will ;-) - but after my + others' experience (reading a couple other recent reviews feels very familiar) in long distance, I would select another vendor. read more

I've used them for three different over the past 14 years, and recently kept my things in storage for 2.5 years. I've literally spent close to $50K through this time. Usually has a good experience despite a few damages. This time I can't say the same. I filed a claim for nearly $4K in damages in February. They agreed to a $2500 refund and it's now the middle of May and I have yet to get a check. I call and write weekly and no one replies or answers. Very unprofessional. I did a long distance move with them, and it was not the greatest experience. They did not proactively reach out to give me updates or even to tell me my things were delayed. I had to call many times for updates. I did not feel prioritized as a customer. If you do decide to do a long distance move with them, be prepared to not see your things for many weeks. Also, don't expect them to pay attention to any boxes or items marked "fragile." The reason I'm giving them two stars instead of one is because the beginning of the move went smoothly. There was plenty of communication and everything went according to schedule. Everything after that, not so much. You might be ok if you work with them for a local move. But save yourself the time and stress and skip them for a long distance move. read more

Second time using FlatRate moving. And the second time I'm giving them one star. First time I used them was from 2012 moving from NYC to LA. They were WEEKS late delivering my stuff. They swore they fixed it when I hired them to move some stuff in storage recently from LA to Kansas City, MO. The truck was late (but given weather issues, they get a pass). However, when they arrived in Kansas City, one of the movers broke a $1000+ dresser, hurried out the door, and said "oh, just submit a claim. have a good day!" I go through the claims process, and they want to give me $175 for a dresser the movers admitted to carelessly breaking. Again, the dresser was over $1000 and I have a receipt proving such (and it's a one-of-a-kind piece). When I protested the small compensation amount, they were basically like "too bad, you should have opted into better insurance." Given how careless they are with your belongings, you can find cheaper elsewhere. I expected better service after such a bad experience with them the first time (and the offered to pay me to remove initial that review). read more

Never gave me my last receipt and damaged my paints. They were complaining about moving all my stuff

So look I used them once to move from NYC to CA, was highly disappointed. Gave them another shot moving 10 mins from one place to another in LA, again was highly disappointed. They do not care about your furniture. They literally do not wrap anything correctly, they send small tiny men, show up late, place items in inappropriate ways on the blacktop. Here is the list of what happened: During the local move, they broke a vintage glass jar I had because they took the plastic stacking bins I had, did not use the dolly they came with which purposefully keeps them stacked upright and instead used a hand truck which has to be tipped back to operate. All items were shuffled around inside each bin. Why did I bother with the plastic bins that stack perfectly upright? This cost me an extra $200 for no reason. (The company though is Leafy and they are women owned. They I highly recommend! Amazing people, service and price) Our handmade beautiful oak bed was literally destroyed by them only wrapping it in black shrink wrap, leaning it against the truck on the blacktop and it blowing over in the wind. They scratched both of my bedroom end tables right on the top of them as well because again they only used black shrink wrap to protect them. My $1000 mattress that is less than a year old got torn in three spots also since they dragged it across the unfinished wood floors. I mean this company has NO regard for your stuff. I paid $1200+ (not including tip) to move a 2 bedroom home 10 mins down the road and my husband and I did almost all the prep work for them before they arrived. Had we known to what extent we should have done the prep work we would have. During the cross country move, they scratched my husbands Vespa up by strapping it down inappropriately during the cross country move. They damaged a mid century credenza we had left from family (literally left holes in the wood). The cross country move was a 1 bedroom move that was quoted as $5664 and on the day of the move they tried to charge me more for items they had already seen when they came and did the consultation. You will get little to no money back for damaged items. Lastly, their masks were down the whole time in this most recent local move. I can not say anything good about this company. TERRIBLE. FIND A DIFFERENT COMPANY OR DO IT YOURSELF. My family has used these services in a move about three years ago and it wasn't too bad, just a scratched table and ended up with a random box of belongings that weren't ours. This time, AWFUL!! They STOLE my debit card and used it. They left so many things at our old residence, they were putting boxes in the wrong places. We have 3 dressers in the garage that we have to move upstairs ourselves bc they left them there. You can see through the window them handling boxes roughly and throwing them. I would not use Flatrate.com! I used them in NY years ago when I was simply moving to a different floor within the same building. Based on that experience, I thought they would be good for a move from LA to Denver. I was wrong! I paid them to pack up my apartment and transport the contents of my 1-bedroom apartment to my new place in Denver. When the boxes arrived in Denver i was horrified at how poorly my items were packed and how little care they took in the move of every household item I own. They broke my flat screen TV, custom art frame, crystal table lamp, walnut wood end table, and many collectables including glass blown flowers, tea cup and a keep sake box. What is even worse than how poorly my items were treated is that they employ a worker who steals. An original painting I purchased was stolen, and the company's customer service is non-existent. I even paid for extra insurance! I filed a claim and sent them the original purchase receipts of almost every item broken including the painting of which the value was several thousand dollars. They told me they reviewed my claim and were going to send me a check for $800 of which $500 was them waiving the deductible as a courtesy to me. They said I could appeal their decision. I immediately filed my appeal, sent several emails, made calls only to be ignored. They could care less about their customers and their customers possessions. This has been such a horrible, frustrating process and I sincerely hope no one ever has to experience what I experienced in dealing with flatrate.com. Don't let their inexpensive move pricing lure you. They provided careless service to me and showed zero remorse that one of their employees stole a valuable painting from me. I told them that I would let the value from the broken items go if they at least sent me the value of my painting of which I sent them the original receipt. They failed to respond so after a few attempts to get them to reconsider, I felt compelled to let others know about my horrible experience trying to deal with flatrate.com. My move actually cost me more than double their quote due to the items broken/stolen. Now, I'm forced to pursue legal means based on their non-existent customer service and the fact that I had given them plenty of opportunity to make this right. I was being reasonable in trying to get them to simply pay me for the damage they caused and now they will have to deal with my attorneys and pay for my broken flat screen tv, table and other items in addition to my stolen painting plus my attorney fees. I've shared my horrible experience with flatrate.com in the hope that this never happens to anyone else! read more

This is for a cross country move from California to New York. Sales people and day of movers were very good and courteous. However, it took three weeks to get our stuff, exceeding the estimated delivery window. I'm not sure what happened, but from the status update, it doesn't seem as if our stuff left California until a good week or two after they picked up our stuff. Then day of the arrival, our movers were delayed for five hours. We were waiting all day for the movers to come. What should have been a morning move ended up being an evening move. The explanation that we were given was that there was some mix up with the shuttles. The movers were very apologetic and we certainly do not blame them as it seems like it was the dispatch office that messed up the paperwork. But the worst of it all, and the reason why I am giving one star, is that a significant portion of our boxes were completely damaged! It was obviously thrown around despite it clearly saying on the boxes "FRAGILE". We were completely appalled by the way our boxes were treated (see photos). We were already stressed out about the movers coming so late... watching as they rolled in damaged boxes into our apartment did not help. This company capitalizes on people who don't know any better or who are vulnerable and in a position to where they do not have many options. $1000 to move a desk from an office to a residential? On what planet? How big is this desk? It would be wonderful if I could say the premium paid goes to the employees but what I have been told is they are abused and expendable. Had used them many times about 8 years ago with no issue. This last year decided to use them on a cross country move. A big mistake. 6 hours late for pickup. The driver drove past the address 3 times(couldn't read the large address posted on the building). Lied about why he was late. Came totally unprepared to box the X-Large picture. Promised it would be done at the warehouse (it wasn't). Acknowledged that I want the extra valuation coverage and would be charged a little extra for it. Now they won't deliver and are holding the items hostage saying the extra valuation wasn't in the original quote even though the mover signed the ladeling acknowledging my choice. And want me to resign that I didn't ask for that after the fact. Most likely because they damaged the picture. Run away from this company as they no longer are what they used to be. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed FlatRate before because I've moved with them three times and now it will be a fourth. There are for the most part no mystery charges. They are very prompt on move out and move in date. They pack very well. You can utilize them to pack or not. One of my moves was long distance move from NYC to LA. My furniture and things have never been damaged. Of course, the one time I didn't use them my beautiful furniture was damaged / scratched up. I am very happy with them and if you're a repeat customer they will give you some sort of discount. read more

Lamps and Artwork were included in my quote to be packed BY the movers. These are the ONLY items that were broken. Completely carelessly packed and antique items arrived completely broken. Do not use FlatRate if you are moving anything you care about. They managed to break or damage almost every piece of furniture I own when I moved from NYC to LA, including my couch. I didn't know you could break a couch, but boy did they find a way. And now, despite signing up for full coverage on the bill of lading, they have tried every possible excuse and reason not to repair or replace the furniture. Starting with claiming my move was "out of their service region" even though they claim LA as one of their central hubs, and no one notified me of this possible issue when I gave them my new address. Once they magically found their repair company, the repair company called to inform me the FlatRate has failed to pay them to come out for the appraisal of my furniture, and when I contacted FlatRate about the issues I was told I could pay for them. I think not. It has been 2 months now and I am still stuck with only broken furniture and a claims department that doesn't care. Additionally there is a mysterious recurring credit card charge that has started from the company. No explanation as to what it's for, no communication about it whatsoever. Agree with many of the reviews here. I'm only giving them 1 star because the actual movers on the day of delivery were very courteous and forthright about damages they found. Otherwise, there's a lot about this company I would caution people on before signing a contract. If you need to store anything with them for a period of time, the process is not made clear nor are the prices. I was charged a whole new move for the delivery portion; not made clear on the initial asssessment. I lost boxes full of security equipment...coincidence??? Not sure because all I got was a stock email. My full size bed frame was damaged and not salvageable. They reimbursed me $105. True, I did not purchase extra insurance and that is on me. But the process to get the $105 took 6 months! I had to send several emails to follow up. Would I even have gotten the $105 if I didn't?! Guys, there are many movers out there. Called for a quote to move 6 miles from current location. Advised representative Catalina, only furniture was a light weight desk with 4 glass shelves and about 12 plastic keepers. Do not use these movers! The damaged my furniture on a move from NYC to LA and lost several boxes (which no one will respond about and I'll never see again). But worst of all - there was only one mover after one had an emergency and I was put in an extremely unsafe situation. The mover was threatening and screamed in my face when I asked him about loud items, and was kicking boxes saying it's not his job to move my things. My building security was there the entire time, but I would have been terrified for the situation I was in as a single woman if I had been alone. We were searching for a moving company for a small, local move and found Flat Rate Moving. We were uncomfortable with the moving companies that quoted us hourly rates with 3-4 hour minimums, with no estimate as to how long the job would take (meaning our final bill was up in the air and completely dependent on how quick the movers felt like working) We found Flat Rate Moving through Yelp and just decided to submit an online inquiry. We quickly received an e-mail but we were really busy so I hadn't gotten a chance to reply. However, the next day, I received a call from a friendly staff member who was willing to answer any questions we had about the flat-rate service and set up an in-home estimate for us. The estimator arrived at our home in a timely manner and gave us a final, non-changeable price for our move based on the items we listed for him. I followed up with him several times after the in-home estimate with questions and revisions to our inventory and he was extremely courteous each time. They followed up with me a day or two before the move to confirm, etc., and each time I had contact with a company employee, they were extremely cordial and pleasant to work with. On the day of the move, David Bray and the two movers who accompanied him worked EXTREMELY efficiently but also made sure none of our items were damaged or mishandled in any way. We moved out of our old apartments (we were moving from 2 different places) and into our new place in record time - what we projected would take at least 3-5 hours took only 2 hours!! All 3 guys were very friendly and stayed cheerful throughout the entire move, which made the process a lot less stressful. I was amazed with the quality of their service from beginning to end. FlatRate gave me a price for a move, I signed their contract, and one week before the move date I got an email asking me to "please sign your updated move plan at your earliest convenience." In the new plan, the price had gone from $3400 to $5400. There had been no changes to the details of my move. They did not contact me to explain; it took two emails and three phone calls before the director of sales told me that he had changed the price because of my location, the weather, and the unavailability of a third party hauler; he then offered me a discounted price of $4800. Kudos to Yelp for enabling people to have a voice about the goods and services they consume. I received a response from a Mr. Ludwig at Flatrate very shortly after posting my negative review about Flatrate. Mr Ludwig is a very courteous and professional fellow and despite being unable to replace my damaged furniture, he put my insurance claim through so that I would get at least some compensation for it. I'm updating my rating because of the improvement in customer service. Unfortunately, it still doesn't make up for the damaged furniture and all the time that has been spent on it, so I will have to keep it to 2 stars. See updates below: IMPROVED CUSTOMER SERVICE - Mr Ludwig has informed me that the previous claims person has been moved away from this position. In my dealings with Mr Ludwig, he has been very clear, professional, responsive, and pleasant to deal with. CLARIFICATION OF ADDITIONAL FEE - It seems that my prior review sparked a lot of questions about the service not being a 'flat rate'. I've been requested to clarify that the additional fee is only required if you ask for a specific date to receive delivery for your furniture. I thought I was clear that the additional $215 fee is not necessary if you have flexibility on when you can take delivery of your furniture. But if you do need to coordinate a fixed date, then you will be charged above your quote. Apologies if I was unclear before. read more

I just moved on Monday, this was my 3rd move with Flat Rate and will be my last. The men they sent were to pack move and unpack. They did not bring the proper materials and were using my personal towels and pillows to cushion my 60 inch tv. So far I have counted 17 items of furniture, paintings/artwork, lighting and decor that was either damaged or completely ruined. Where to start on our move out of our house into storage they forgot our fridge in our condo that we were moving out of abs had to have someone come back the next day to pick-up. On our move out of storage only two movers came for a large move it took over two hours for a third mover to join. In the midst of our move I was informed that two of the three lovers needed to go onto another job and the third mover would put our furniture together. Hours later furniture was not together and was later informed it is a multi person job to complete. I ended up having to put my daughters crib together on my own. They also lost our fridge which was shipped to New York. Upon locating it took over two weeks for our fridge to be shipped back to us and was then delivered damage. Weeks later they have still not provided us with any sort of payment for the damaged fridge abs just requested a third party person come and access the damage. The soonest date I was provided was the beginning of April. Ridiculous!!! I would rather pay more money for a reliable company then ever work with them again!!! read more

I was referred to this moving companh, but I was wrong. Although they were quick with our move, my husband and I have found things damaged and missing after they've moved us. I have called and emailed trying to get a hold of someone since April 2018 and I have not yet since received a follow up of any kind. We thought they were legit considering one of the guys texted us photos of my daughter's dresser they dropped and advises us to contact their office to report it and reimburse us. As I mentioned, we have not received any feedback with many of my phone calls and emails. Corner of our dining table is damaged. My daughter is still without a dresser. My son's play pen is missing and other miscellaneous things that we've noticed over these last several months. read more

I've moved with this company twice now. First time, went off without a hitch and everything went as scheduled. Second time, they broke two of my things and have yet to reimburse me the petty $75 they owe me for my $500 marble island and $1000 desk (they pay for damages based on weight). It's been over 6 months- it's the least they could do! I think this is the kind of company that's hit or miss. They might be too large to have their operations tend to issues when they occur in the proper manner. But so long as things go off with no issues, you should be in the clear. read more

Damages galore, movers didnt come prepared with proper materials to protect my furnishings, contracted team (which FlatRate lied about), late showing up, truck broke down, one worker didnt show up, the list goes on and on and on. NOW, I am filing an appeal to their settlement offer (I even paid for extra insurance-SCAM), 5 requests with NO response from them. I was charged more than I should have originally paid, the price was changed on the day the movers came AND MY EXPENSIVE FURNITURE WAS DAMAGED REALLY REALLY BAD. I used Flatrate multiple times over the years with good results. Multiple times in the Los Angeles area and once cross-country. I didn't hesitate to hire them again when we needed to move in April but, considering we needed to move during a pandemic, we called ahead to make sure we'd have a crew that was as safe and careful as possible. We were guaranteed that the movers would be in gloves, masks, and booties so shoes wouldn't be anywhere in the house. Cut to: Moving day. Crew showed up with no gloves, no booties, and some had bandanas as masks but most did not. A second crew showed up that suddenly became available. No masks or gloves or booties. I called the office to explain this was a big problem and not what we agreed to. I was told I could cancel and send everyone home but I'd lose what I'd paid and, of course, I'd have to find different movers. Not great considering, again, the pandemic and the need to be out of the house and into the new one that day. I wound up having to provide masks and gloves myself throughout the day. The house was littered with empty cans, bottles, and torn rubber gloves as they left. At the destination, the crew had to borrow more masks and gloves and also didn't have any tools to assemble the furniture that had been broken down at the previous house. Overall, the movers themselves worked fast. It's a tough job but they all remained positive and moved quickly. I appreciated that. The office promised one thing but failed to deliver on the safety precautions and guarantees. When I called and filed a complaint after the fact, no one responded for a very long time. Calls went unanswered. Months later, the claims department offered me $300 (roughly) for my troubles during this nightmare of a move that totaled $2400 (roughly). 4 months later, I still haven't even received that, despite the claims department telling me the check has been mailed out. It's a bummer of an end to a relationship with a company I've used multiple times since 2007 or so. I've recommended them many times in the past but I cannot do so any longer. read more

Up until my most recent move, these guys had 5 stars from me for the past 9 years. I used them twice to move within NYC (awesome!), then used them to move from NYC to LA (awesome!) and in June used them to move within LA. The moving guys were great, no problems at all, they were really thorough and diligent and I tipped them well. It seemed like another 5-star move. And then, a couple weeks later when we got to the end of unpacking all of our stuff, I realized that quite a few boxes were missing. Now that I've done a full tally, I'm missing: - my entire cookbook collection - a box of coffee table books - two boxes that contained the last 20 years of my tax returns I tried emailing with my details and a formal inquiry: they don't respond to any email inquiries though, full stop. I tried calling and the guy said that they hadn't had any reports of leftover boxes, but by the time I called it was already 3-4 weeks after our move so he said it was unlikely that anything would turn up. I don't think the guys kept the boxes, obviously... but it was almost midnight when they finished, it was dark, and I'm guessing that they didn't examine the back of the truck completely. It would've been nice if, the next day or whenever they opened the truck and realized "wow we have a bunch of boxes still in here" that they would call you, the client, and say "we forgot a few things." So after so many excellent experiences with them, I'm left having to say "I won't use them again." read more

After a ton of research on a cross country move, I got multiple estimates and my rep, Ilan (who was very thorough and communicative), worked with me to give me the best offer by far. Putting everything in their LA storage until I am ready to receive in NY... making it very easy for me. gave me a thorough inventory. The guys were so thorough and careful.. but still FAST. Had some of the same guys I had on my first move with them from a couple years ago, which was nice to see familiar faces! I can't speak to the negative reviews on here, but did not have anything like that in my experience... and I am a pretty high maintenance person. My team leader was Ronaldo. He is a gem! read more

The FlatRate company offers a great service in their ability to help you pack-up, load and ship your belongings long distance. However, they try in bundle their deliveries in such a way that invariably seems to cause a huge gap between pickup and eventual drop-off dates. We had our apartment packed up at the end of July and were offered a drop-off date of between August 11-20th. While this was less than ideal, no other companies would ship our things last minute at a reasonable cost (FlatRate was quite reasonable). The problems really began as we got closer though. FlatRate promised to narrow the window close to these dates. Finally on August 10, they told us to expect deliver sometime between the 15th and 16th. Today, the 14th, we receive a morning email CONFIRMING deliver on the 15th from 8AM to 1PM. About two hours later, however, they called us back to explain that the other drop-off trip from New York on route to us in Baltimore had cancelling so they were cancelling the shipment altogether. We were told the new arrival date was now the 19th with no offer for a discount or expedited service. I explained that we had driven back to Baltimore early from a vacation with my family specifically for this drop-off. Moreover, I had planned the start of Law School and my girlfriend had planned interviews, based off this drop-off date that allowed us to move into our apartment. ALL of our professional clothes and belongings were in this shipment. Their response was to tell me nothing could be done. I demanded to speak to a manager. They put my on hold multiple times claiming the manager was busy. Finally I was told the manager was finishing a call but would call me promptly. After an hour I called back and was told the manager was "in a meeting" but was further promised I would be called by the end of business. I never was. read more
