This evening we took our family to FRB&G as appreciation for holiday hosting. The service was OK, although when asked about the honey spice toddy, we were told he knew all about food, but not drinks. I've eaten here many, many times. The food has ranged from good to really good. But tonight I felt inclined to write a review because I thought that they knocked it out of the park! We started with an the fire roasted flat bread appetizer which was awesome. It had fresh fruit, fresh basil and goat cheese. We also ordered ia couple of draught beers (Belle's Oberon and Two Hearted - can't go wrong). Next we each got a 1/2 portion of the pear and goat cheese salad. It was also awesome. The pears were grilled for a nice touch. We ordered burgers for our entrees. We had the Flat River Burger and the Show Boat Burger. Anyone who wants their burgers rare can appreciate how difficult that can be in a restaurant. They nailed it! And both burgers were tasty and well topped. Our waitress, Jenny ( or PM Bar P as she is known on the receipt), was friendly, attentive and really cared that we were happy with our meal. Well done crew! read more

Best choice if you are in Lowell Michigan. The atmosphere and outdoor seating are great. Staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. I would stick with their staples of pizza, appetizers and wood fired quesadillas. The entrees are overpriced for what they are and their sandwiches are a hit or miss. Prices are fair on these items. It's a Gilmore restaurant so you are paying for the name as well. Some good local beers on top too. read more

Good, but not excellent. A better option to take your family or friends or date out to eat, over Olive Garden, or some place like that. The food is fresh (as opposed to canned like many so called restraunts), but the dishes need tweaking. I visited the grill when it first opened and would have given it 5 stars at that time. Everything exceeded my expectations. But, it went downhill from there. Each subsequent year I've visited, the food seems to get worse. Most recently was January 2011 when I ordered a seafood alfredo dish. It lacked flavor and needed a helping of wine and fresh herbs to give the sauce more pizazz. The location is great, and as I mentioned, a far better option to take visiting friends and family to. But no, it's not a 5 star restraunt. read more

Good food and good service every time we have been here. The pizzas are outstanding, and the menu has good variety with quality. The atmosphere is pleasing with the outside area open year-round for more casual family fun. Winedown Wednesday gets good wine at 50%. That is hard to find, and we like it! read more

I love this place! I used to live in Lowell and this was always the go to place for a casual or fancy dinner/lunch. Now that I am living in Grand Rapids with a lot more food choices, I still find myself making the occasional trip back into Lowell to eat here. The food is great and the service is always friendly. Since I last reviewed this place they removed both items I went there for, so that kinda sucks. I have found one or two other item since then that I enjoy and will go get when I'm craving them. As for the comment about trying the pizzas, I have tried a couple that peaked my interest and they were ok. The pizzas are my back up if what I normally go for ever gets taken away again. Wood fired pizza's are great-Thai being one of the best. You can always count on the Walleye being a solid well portioned entrees.

Stopped in with my husband and son last week. The booth we were seated at was very tiny...seemed like they are trying to pack you in a too small of space. The speaker directly above our heads was blaring music that was a bit too loud, though I did like the selection. My husband ordered the steak chiabatta sandwich and the meat was chewy/overcooked and was not served on a chiabatta bun, it was just a typical white bun. My son's burger and sandwich were good. I got the pizza and it was awesome. So, a mixed bag, but I will give it 4 stars for decent service and great pizza! read more

Big city ambiance with the benefits of being located in a small town. Flat River Grill is a perfect place for a first date or a family outing with the kids and grandparents. The servers are far from snobby and responsive to every need of the customer. The food is unbeatable taste wise and doesn't break the bank. I had a burger and desert for under $10 and they were both out of this world. The patio is beautiful in the summer months, especially at dusk and they keep the mosquitoes well under control. Dining inside is also very comfortable and has a great feel to it. It's is definitely worth the drive if you find yourself in downtown Grand Rapids looking for a place to eat. There is no possible way you can be disappointed... I know I've never been with any of the Gilmore Collection (a common owner that manages multiple restaurants). read more

We stopped in for lunch at about 1:00. We weren't sure what to expect, we had been drawn in by the large billboard advertising the restaurant at the gas station/Subway near the highway. The ambience was very relaxing, with brick walls, halogen lighting, and gas chimineas warming the terrace seating area. Jazz was softly playing, and the holiday decorations were cheerful yet understated. My husband had the burger, and I had a chicken salad with warm goat cheese and a tangy raspberry viniagrette. I suspect the amount of leaf lettuce would be different in our next visit due to the recent romaine lettuce shortage, but the salad was still delicious, with pepitas and dried cranberries. The chicken was slightly smoky, reflecting the signature wood fired ovens. A very pleasant visit. read more

Atmosphere and interior are really nice. Good wine and liquor options. Great menu - with seasonal variations. The salad arrived first, and was great. Their house dressing is amazing!! So much so, I bought a bottle. For my main course, I ordered the Tournedos Oscar. The crab atop my steak tasted a bit musty, but the béarnaise was okay (not great). Also, my asparagus and squash sides were both cold. The wait for a table and during our meal service was a bit long. We did arrive later in the evening, but that shouldn't affect our experience. Excellent food for both adults and children. I recommend the patty melt, any of the quesadillas or the bacon turkey melt on a pretzel roll. All were delicious. The homemade chips were light, crispy and tossed with just the perfect amount of salt. Staff was awesome and we had excellent service. read more

We've eaten here many times and almost always have had good service and great food. Only minor complaint was portion size seems to have gotten smaller? I still didn't leave hungry but didn't leave with any left overs either. Hint...the patio dining area with patio heaters is always warmer then the sometimes drafty main dining room. read more

This place is always solid when dining in but twice now we've gotten take out from here and it's been terrible. The Cobb Salad was maybe 4 pieces of lettuce and very very small portions across the board. We will give it one more shot but eat in, don't take out. read more

We ate here for Father's Day and our large party sat on the patio. It was a chilly day, but luckily they have patio warmers. I was very comfortable, but the rest of the table who sat further away from the heat source was cold. The service was amazing and the waitress was very attentive and professional. The bread that they brought out was really tasty and warm, and my husband's roasted veg soup was good. Our entrees were disappointing. I had the fried chicken sandwich on ciabatta, and it was soggy. I had the bulgur salad for the side and I didn't like it. My husband's burger was cold, but like I said, we did have a large party. Everything on the menu sounds really good, but did not meet expectations. I give four stars for atmosphere and service, but for a Gilmore restaurant, I was not impressed with the food at all. I would eat here again but stick to pasta or salad. read more

The Flat River Grill is Lowell's finest place to eat. They have a great menu with selections for even the pickiest of eaters. My wife and I have different tastes and diets when it comes to food. My wife and I have been wanting to try the Flat River Grill for some time and finally had the chance tonight. Wonderful experience. Very casual and relaxing atmosphere , yet a menu which rivals any in sophistication. My wife had the wood grille chicken sandwich and truly enjoyed it. I went with the build your own pizza and it was excellent. But even better than the atmosphere and the food was the service. We used to enjoy coming here for the amazing food. In the past 2 years it has disappointed us every time. We will not be back. Steak on salad was overcooked. Salad was over dressed. Perfect place for lunch on a nice sunny afternoon! We ate outside but I went inside to use the bathroom and the inside was beautiful too. Very dark and classy. The food was amazing. Bread was brought out with olive oil and parmesan cheese to dip it in. I ordered the baby spinach salad and it was the most amazing salad I have ever eaten in my entire life. I'm not kidding.
