What a great new gem to the Andersonville neighborhood. Everything felt and tasted fresh and light - much needed in Chicago's steam summers. Started with the Salatim (Marinated Olives, Torshi, Hummus, & Goat Cheese). Warm pita went with everything. Olivers were nice and salty, cheese was the perfect medium of bitter and sweet. My only gripe was - I WANT MORE TORSHI! Pickled Watermelon Salad was not my first choice, but my friend chose it. Would've never put watermelon, olives, and goat cheese together - but my my my am I quite the convert. Khachapuri was a bit heavy, as to be expected. And kind of a lot, especially in the Summer. And I was quite enjoying all the lighter foods - I think my pallette just wasn't ready for the ooey gooeyness that was the main entre. Might be better in the Fall. Blood orange sour blood cocktail was just what I needed. Bourbon, Lemon, egg white, and some ginger. Summer all dayyyyy. read more

This got a very good review on the Infatuation so I took my husband for his birthday. The food was decent but the space and service were not great. Despite an almost empty dining room, we were seated next to a cold window (scarves required), food took 45min+ to drop, and while the waiter was friendly enough he barely checked in on us. We were very excited to have a new Mediterranean place opening up a block from our home but after ordering takeout we were a little disappointed. We ordered the watermelon salad, the schnitzel pita, the beef pita, an order of zaatar fries, and the wood-oven tart. The watermelon salad was fresh and delicious, although the "pickled" watermelon just seemed like regular watermelon. Neither of us liked our pitas -- there was a ton of meat and very little salad or pickles, and the amba sauce is thick and pungent, so they were very heavy. (I tend to like pitas with a lot of veggies so they were just not my taste.) It might just be a matter of proportions. We ordered the zaatar fries because the menu didn't note the sandwiches already come with them. The fries themselves had no zaatar on them (at least that we could tell). They were good fries though. The tart ended up seeming like a kind of tough pancake. I'm wondering if this was just due to the time between making it and when we ate it at the end of the meal. It might just not travel well. Overall I'd like to give this place another shot as a new neighborhood spot so I'm hoping we'll find some other menu items that we like better. read more

I don't even remember where we ran across this restaurant, but I wish I did. If anything else they recommended was 1/2 as good as this, I'd be thrilled. The host was very accommodating when I had to call and add my 8 year old to the reservation. We were worried because it was supposed to be a grownup celebration. However, the server and host were amazing. Initially, we were worried because some of the items we wanted we all gone, but it was clear why they ran out after tasting the food. We had the Moroccan fish, whole chicken, za'atar fries, and salatim. We are like we had never seen food before. Even my son ate a ton. Beautiful patio with plenty of umbrellas for shade. Service is great but they are working out some newly opened kinks. Food was fresh and delicious. I wish there were a few more offerings but it isn't bad. Some creative cocktails, too! I look forward to going back and trying more. A cozy neighborhood joint with a selection of Israeli favorites. The menu is compact which I prefer, because it probably indicates that each item was thoughtfully included. I would recommend a seat in the back patio. It feels like a cozy garden hideaway where you can relax and enjoy some drinks and small bites on a weekday. The food is presented simply with no frills, highlighting the classic flavors of the region. Hummus with Crispy Cauliflower (4/5) There were 5 selections of toppings to choose from and I'm sure you won't go wrong with any of them. The hummus itself is actually quite mild - no strong tahini, garlic, lemon or olive oil flavors come through. I would say the dominant flavor is that of chickpeas. Personally, I prefer a punchier garlic and olive oil forward hummus, so this was not exactly my favorite but I can see how this would be appealing to some. There are great things about this dish though. The texture of the hummus was smooth and creamy without feeling like it was pureed. The cauliflower was delicious with the light fry, and the caramelized onions added a sweet contrast although I would have preferred a bit more caramelization on it. The crunchy chickpeas were a little too crunchy for me. The pita that accompanied the dish was warm, moist, and most importantly freshly baked. Khachapuri with Shakshuka and soft egg (4/5) I'm not a huge fan of cheese heavy dishes. I'm glad they put this rendition on the menu which included Shakshuka instead of the typical cheese topping. The bread itself is a shaped like a boat, with the middle section filled with a tomato sauce and soft egg. I think this combination works. The bread was doughy and chewy like a good Neapolitan pizza crust. I wish there was more Shakshuka because there was just so much bread. In hindsight, I think I would have just preferred to order their regular Shakshuka because I wanted more sauce. It was super savory, not really acidic like most tomato sauces and tasted strongly of parsley. Whole Branzino (4.5/5) The presentation was glorious. As you can see, it's a whole fish which was twisted and opened up before frying. The garnishes are layered inside the body. The shape was impressive and by opening up the middle, you get more surface to crisp up. I liked like that they didn't use any batter. This made the dish feel light and you can really enjoy the crispy texture of the skin on its own. The Matbucha and Toum sauces could be punchier. The Toum sauce definitely needed more garlic. I do like the pairing of the two however. The citrus fruit garnish was pretty to look at, but I think the dish would have tasted fine without it. Apparently this dish was so impressive that our neighbors made sure to order one too. read more

I really want this place to win. I ordered the cauliflower hummus and The Yafo Pot Pie. Both were amazing. The creaminess of the hummus was silky and the pot pie was crispy and flaky to perfection. The main problem: we waited about 20 minutes for water at the beginning. We also ordered the watermelon salad and the regular salad but after an hour they never came so we cancelled that order. Finally, when our waiter gave us the check he surreptitiously pressed the 22% button on the automatic scanner. That shit is scammy and so minor but it is a testament to bullshit that will lose you customers no matter how good your food is. read more

EXCELLENT trip to Fiya. - Service is great. Our server was really friendly. Had the check split even before we asked. Very attentive and friendly. - Patio was unfortunately full but they have semi-outdoor seating in the restaurant as well. I have a friend who raves about this place, so I decided to order delivery ftom them tonight. What ensued was a dinnertime nightmare. For starters, I ordered at 4:30 pm because even though they're open late, delivery ends around eight and I had already missed the deadline several times. One and a half hours later I was still waiting for my food, so I called them. I was on hold ten minutes before I gave up, and called them again. Long story short, after several calls, I was finally told the manager would call me to tell me what happened to my food. He didn't call. After 30 minutes I called back. Now I was told that the food order had left the restaurant 15 minutes prior ( it was now around 6:30). I was assured that the manager would call to apologize and offer me a discount card to make up for the wait. The food finally arrived at close to 7:00 pm. I had ordered the Salatim - four small dishes of cold salad items and olives, plus I added on Jerusalem salad. I also ordered one of their hummus dishes and an extra piece of pita. All this, with delivery charges, cost $50. The salatim alone was $14. What I got was five small (half-cup) plastic containers, each about half full, of corn salad, olives, eggplant dip, etc - in other words, miniscule amounts of each item. There were two pieces of bread. Now remember, I had ordered an extra piece of bread, so either the restaurant only gives one piece of pita with the hummus and nothing with the salatim, or I didn't get my extra piece. Okay, we sat down to eat, and it was pretty mixed. The Jerusalem salad was bland, the eggplant dip was virtually tasteless, the yogurt was a dollop of Greek-style yogurt, so nothing special, and I wasn't wild about the tomato jam. I liked the corn relish and the olives. My husband liked the hummus, but thought it was a skimpy portion. So the portions were teensy, they were chintzy with the bread, the food was not exactly stellar, and yet the prices were pretty high for what you get. And the manager? She accosted our group completely unprovoked over a totally harmless comment made by one of us in jest, did not give us a chance to explain ourselves, used the MF swear and very rudely asked us to leave. This place is definitely open and properly socially distanced. The hummus is amazing and the pita is freshly baked and served warm. This is not like your store bought hummus. The food was ok, our server was awesome but the hostess that seated us seemed to discriminate either because we are not white or because we had kids. I called because we were in the area and wanted to try a new place since we don't come to the are often. I asked if there was seating available outdoor. I was told indoor was definitely possible and at the time the hostess was very sweet and asked to come and that they'll see what can be done about outdoor. Once we reached, there "nothing outdoor" and the tables by the road were also "reserved" for 1pm and we were there around 12:15pm. The tables next to those were also not available because" they needed to maintain distance". So we sat a bit inside. In a few minutes, there were two men that were seated right next behind out table. So now you don't need any distance? I don't think we were comfortable that there were so many other tables available and she had them sit right behind. That seems a little deliberate. We asked our server, who was very sweet, if we could move two tables closer to road. And he mentioned that's fine because it was slow and there were no reservations for that area. Hmm.. ok. Plus noone even came to sit on the tables that were by road by 1:20pm. So clearly that lady lied. I felt it was very unfair and I'd not go back because of how I felt at that place. I've been hearing about this place for a while, and finally moved into the neighborhood, so we had a good excuse to go. We made a reservation online the day. When we got there, I didn't know that a patio reservation was an option so was bummed we had to sit inside. We did sit by the window though so that was nice. After a few minutes, we realized that there was only one waiter for the entire front of restaurant. 20 min later, Susan came by to say she'd be over in a moment. I don't blame Susan at all, she came over a moment later and she was incredibly kind but had her hands completely full with what looked like 10 tables. When my wife went to the host after waiting 10-15 min, and asked if she could just get some bread because we were both super hungry (our fault, we should have snacked before but we wanted to be ready for a great meal!), she said she couldn't do that and had nothing to help with the situation. Food wise- we ordered: Salatim: good. Didn't have roast eggplant, so gave us extra matbucha which would not be our choice because it's spicy. Asked for extra labneh instead. Spiced cauliflower hummus- fine. Watermelon salad- delicious Fried eggplant pita with fries- delicious Drinks- really disappointing Asked for Strawberry Basil Smash, and it was out. Then asked for "Wisconsin" Old Fashioned which was also out. Settled on Pomegranate mezcal margarita which was super good but wasn't what I really wanted. Asked for Pollyanna, and didn't know there were 2 kinds, so we didn't specify. We got a beer we definitely did not want and my wife ended up going up to the bartender to switch it out. Then asked for Ravinia baldwin porter which they were ALSO out of... this is getting ridiculous. So had the bartender choose something dark but not sweet. We ended up with a cold brew coffee beer which was not drinkable (I swear it needed milk and sugar). Ended up not drinking it and not paying for it. In the end, we enjoyed a few of the dishes, one drink, Susan and that's it! We don't plan to go back, glad we experienced it, but there are definitely a few things that could have been better. read more

I actually added the bill up to be sure it was correct. So it is a pricy restaurant for Mediterranean. Also, the chairs in the back are really uncomfortable. Wanted to try the new place by the owners of Jerry's Sandwiches - and we were blown away. All the staff were so welcoming and friendly, and Michelle, our wonderful bartender, walked us through the menu. Seriously-best hummus we've ever had. And the sandwiches! And the fries! I'm not usually that excited about fries, but these were crunchy and seasoned and delicious. Probably would not recommend if you don't like food with flavor. First night they were out of 2 things I had ordered then screwed up the order and then when items werent in the bag I called and they said they were out of those items but they charged me. Food was medicore. Second night the electricity had gone out so no igloos thats fine it happens...then you couldnt buy mixed drinks because the electricity had gone out? It was on in the restaurant...I could go on about horrible service and they were out of wine, well the two types we had ordered. Overpriced food again was medicore. We were fortunate to stumble onto this amazing restaurant and can't wait to go back! The back patio is utterly delightful, salatim appetizers were extremely yummy (humus is fabulous), and the Mediterranean fish and oven-roasted entire head of cauliflower were both truly fantastic! Nice pinot noir for me and tasty sazerac for my husband. I see other reports about problems with service, but in our case our waitress was extremely friendly, relaxed and didn't miss a thing. Worst restaurant experience of my life. This Valentine's Day I was lied to told I was going to be in a bubble for date night, site appeared to charge me $90 for reservation.
