Today I was driving on Rt 7 east toward Tyson's near LoCo Pkwy & Rt 28 when one of Five Star Septic's drivers almost ran me (and my 3 year old son) off the road. As a cherry on top to the dangerous road rage, the driver also laughed at me in his side and rear view mirrors as he sped ahead. Troubled by this behavior, I called the number (which was prominently displayed on the work truck) and spoke with management. I'm rating Five Star Septic, FIVE STARS, because of the wonderful treatment and response I received from the gentleman on the phone. He was genuinely concerned, took down all the information, and assured me the driver would be dealt with. His incredible candor and excellent customer service (for someone who isn't even a customer) led me to leaving this review. In fact, if I ever have any septic needs, they'll be the place I call. We had Five Star Septic to our house in connection with a home sale. German and Nixon arrived on time as scheduled and they were extremely professional and courteous. They sure knew their job well. They dug up both distribution boxes, were careful to insure the grass could be replaced in strips, tested the pumps and pumped out the tank very efficiently. After they were finished, they covered the distribution boxes and replaced the sod on top so well that you could hardly tell they had dug up the ground. Also, Tim in their office contacted us after the inspection was complete to be sure we understood when we would receive the report and when our credit card would be charged. I called Five Star to assist with a failed septic pump. There was no emergency but due to their busy schedule they could not come out the next day - and said that they could come out that evening instead. That sounded great! -- but then I was charged for "emergency service". The next day another guy came out - charged me $175 to inspect. I agreed to the charges - but realized later that I was being taken for a ride. I was given a quote of $4200 for the repair. This sounded very high so I got a 2nd quote - which came in at $2800 for basically the same work. . The lady on the phone talked so much she never listened to what I was trying to tell her...so there is no wonder there was confusion over whether or not it was an emergency. Also, I understand that they are paid on commission - which is fine - but it appears that they tried to over charge me hoping that I would just say "yes" in the crisis. I'm sure they do perfectly good work...but be very, very cautious of being over charged. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Stay away. What a circus. Contacted them because my commercial lines were backed up. Their emergency line was never attended to, apparently its only for established customers only. Finally the next morning I got ahold of someone who said they could perform emergency service in hour to an hour and half max, they took my credit card number but showed up 3 hours later, originally quoted $1200 for septic tank service and "hydro-jetting" but then later told $1795 for excessive material. Avoid at all costs. Hired them to do a septic inspection on a house I was interested in purchasing, no problem scheduling at first, but... Problem 1: The inspection was supposed to start at 11am, I was not local (they knew that) and I was driving 2 hours to get to the house for the inspection at 10am they called saying they would need to reschedule, I asked for when, since I had just driven 2 hours! They suggested 3pm the same day. Fine I will turn around and come back later. Problem 2: When I arrived at 3pm, they had already done the inspection and LEFT! they sent me a quote on problems the next day, but never showed me in person what was wrong, they just left the back yard of the house dug up. Problem 3: I called and complained, they agreed to come back out and show me what was wrong, we agreed for 12pm the following day. they call later that day and say, sorry they cant do that, lets try the day after that. fine. Problem 4: 12pm the day of our new appointment comes and goes, they dont show up, I call and they apologize saying they thought it was 2 pm, but I was correct it was 12. they would come out at 2, but would call me 30 minutes ahead of schedule Problem 5: they call and confirm 2pm, but it comes and goes, they finally show up at 2:30, but it is not the same person who did the original inspection, he finds more problems and said the first person did a poor inspection and he would get me an updated quote. TERRIBLE. They were scheduled to come out at 10am last Monday. NO SHOW. We called to find out what happened and they said they'd be there Tuesday. NO SHOW. They called and said the following Monday. Then they called Monday and said they couldn't do it but they'd be there Tuesday. That's today, and we just got a call that they can't come until tomorrow. I said that that was unacceptable and they needed to show up today as scheduled. He said he'd call the "lady at the health department" to see if she would still come out and he'd call me back within 15 minutes. No call (what a shock), so I called him. He said they wouldn't be there because the health dept wouldn't do it. I told him I wanted her number to confirm that they wouldn't come out today; he began yelling at me! He yelled that he's not a liar and that we could take our business elsewhere, then hung up on me. I called the main number and asked for the owner, even though it was the same guy who answered (Rob). He said, "Is this the lady I was just on the phone with?" I said yes, and I'd like to speak with the owner. Suddenly he's all peaches and cream (read: he's capable of a conversation without raising his voice and hanging up) asking if he can show up tomorrow and claiming that he actually said he would come that afternoon. ummm...what?!! The entire experience has been ludicrous. Why take a job if you don't want it? And then to yell at your customer? UPDATE: This review sat unpublished until now. I was hesitant to post it because I'd finally gotten someone on the phone who seemed willing to get this all figured out. Joni did get them to come out the FIFTH TIME THEY HAD AN APPT and they did the work. Unfortunately, we were told that the charges were $2175 but that because of all the hassle we'd get $175 off, making the total a flat $2000. Guess what? They sent an invoice for $2225! ARGH!! So I call them. I ask for an itemized invoice showing each individual charge since we're not $225 over our quoted price. So they send me an invoice with one amount: $2,225. No individual charges as requested. Just one more thing to waste our time with. Waiting now for an actual itemized invoice. I'm not holding my breath. read more

I just moved into a new house that Five Star Septic had been servicing for years. We decided to stay with them to do an evaluation of our septic system. It was easy to schedule and affordable, and they did it on schedule and completely. Unfortunately, there were problems. I asked them for an estimate, checked out the price with others, and had them do the work. They did it in a timely way and it was done well, including the successful inspection by our county officials (which they were present at). They were easy to get on the phone when I needed to talk, and their info and billing was straightforward. I will continue to utilize their services (hopefully not needing them too much!). read more

We used Five Star Septic for 7 years (don't know why we didn't change after any of the horrible experiences). Their work is sloppy and incomplete (leave dangerous materials sticking up out of ground that cannot be pulled out as well as garbage strewn around the site). Their communication is nonexistent. They leave giant gaping holes in the yard and then leave the site, leaving home owners wondering what is going on. Would it be too much to put a note on the door or knock on the door to let homeowners know what to expect, especially with giant holes in their backyard? Their customer service (all the way up to top level) is horrible. I've been told to clean up the garbage they left MYSELF. The work is inconsistent. In April, we have them come to do the regular pump-out/inspection and everything is fine with all equipment. But by summer (when our house is up for sale and a potential buyer does an inspection using the same company), NOW all equipment is faulty and requires thousands of dollars of work. Huh? read more

I highly recommend this company. A few weeks ago, I had an emergency and they responded and came out within an hour or two and took care of the problem (they found that the septic tank needed to be jetted). There was an emergency surcharge because it was on a weekend evening, but everyone was so professional and helpful , and we were quickly able to get back to normal life. Subsequently -- a couple of days ago, we had another water problem and I thought it wise to have the septic tank checked again because we had the same type of problems as before. I called Five Star and they were immediately concerned that the septic tank itself might not be properly disseminating the waste into the septic field. They sent someone out within the hour to check it even though it was late Friday afternoon. It turned out that the tank was functioning properly and that I needed to call a plumber, but even though there was never any question regarding the quality of their work, the owner refused to charge me for this visit (even though they had to dig down to get to the septic tank to check it and replace the dirt when done). He said that I'd already had to pay to have them come out the first time and pay an emergency surcharge, and now I would have to pay a plumber, and that times are tight, so no charge. Doesn't that just make you feel good? It was awesome:))) read more

Where do I begin? This company was the only septic company we used up till last month. Last year we paid thousands for a broken part of the septic, they told us they pumped the tanks at the same time. Of course, I paid for the pump-out since as a housewife I know nothing about septic. One day last night, our basement ceiling started leaking, brown water came into the second-floor powder room. It was like a war zone. I called 5 design before they said anything else they wanted to charge me $1095 for emergency service. Another couple of companies quoted me $350 to $400 for the same services. It was later discovered by me that my tanks were not pumped! My new company came and pumped two days in a row for tanks that I thought were emptied less than a year ago. I will absolutely report this to the county. 5 design not only lied about their work, they also try their to take advantage of emergencies. Of course we will never use this company ever again. I am writing this review in the hopes that others won't become a victim. It cost thousands to clean up the house after septic water came inside the house. I have been a five star septic customer for many years and it proves to be a big and costly mistake. 4 years ago, they replaced my pump, 2 years later they told me it broke again, and 1.5 year later it broke again and again. In 4 year period of time my pumps were replaced three times and each cost $1100+, while typical pump should last more than 10 years. This is how they ripe off customers. Worst yet, they told me the pump they used has only one year warranty and it is going to break down again. We received a voicemail approximately SEVEN months after our service call asking where they could send the bill. After the passage of many months, I had assumed they had not billed us as a courtesy because the work was minimal (checking for damage and none found). When I called in response to this voicemail, they confirmed that they had an accurate address and phone number on file. When I asked the accounting person, Erin, about the delay she said something along the lines of it is what it is. The service technician (Ivan) showed up on time and was very professional. Besides pumping out the tank he provided me an overview of the condition of my septic system. Searched for a septic company to pump my RV tanks out. 5 Star agreed to come the next day so I cancelled all quotes with others. They couldn't tell me when the truck/driver would arrive. They showed up at 5 am, just happened to be up and saw the truck and lights in the drive. Truck then abruptly left. No call. I had to call them at 9am and ask what was going on. The receptionist told me after a short hold that the driver didn't have the right attachment for the RV and would have to come back on Monday, 5 DAYS LATER. I asked why the driver would come at 5 am and NOT have the right attachment. She didn't know. I asked why, if it was their fault, wouldn't they come back out to service my RV (I have out of town family staying in it). She put be on hold again to presumably "discuss with managers", and returned with the the same story. I told her I was going to post this and let everyone know NOT to use 5 Star Septic since they don't honor their promises. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, THEY ARE NOT HONEST AND DON'T CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS. Still waiting for Five Star to come back and check on what they were supposed to have done over a month ago. Their employee was pulled out of another local job to come and pump out my septic system at 10 a.m. He arrived early at my door at 9:15. Knocked at my door at 9:31 to let me know he was finished. Asked for the $395 fee and I said that seemed like a lot for 15 minutes. He said there was a $160 dumping fee and that is why they charge so much. He sat in his truck for several minutes on my driveway before leaving. He did not know that my system had a filter and kept insisting it did not when indeed it does. That made me skeptical. I called Five Star's office the next day and asked how long it takes to clean out a system and the man told me about an hour. Well mine took 15 minutes. I am still waiting for them to come back and check things out. Two phone calls later and no one has been here yet. I will be happy to change my review if they own up to what they (haven't) done. These guys are terrible. Twice they tried to charge me for things that they had just fixed. They said that they did not have any record of performing the work and that the materials that were used were below par and they would not have used them. When I produced both invoices, they ate crow and fixed the problems for a very nominal fee. Needless to say, they would have been happy to double bill me if I did not have the invoices. Be warned, this company is fraudulent! I called when our septic alarm went off. Erin was great on the phone and happy to send a technician as soon as possible. At that time, she told me it would cost $175 for the alarm service call, but if they needed to do further work, the $175 fee would be applied to that charge. She said they would likely need to clean the tanks if the pump had failed, and that the $175 fee would be credited against the cleaning. She said the cleaning would be around $350, but if the pump failed it would be $425-$495. The pump did indeed fail, so I spoke to Erin again, and she told me the pump cleaning would now be $595. When I referenced our initial conversation, she said she told me it would be more if the pump had failed, which is true, but she never quoted me a price that high. To make matters worse, I went ahead and authorized the pump cleaning with the understanding that the $175 fee was applicable to the $595 cleaning fee. Lo and behold, I've been charged both $175 and $595, and when I called to inquire, they told me the they never said that and the $175 fee would only be credited against a pump repair. They did a total bait and switch on me, not once, but twice! To top things off, their pump repair quote was nearly $1k more than another company's.
