The food was amazing. Went with my girlfriend and we ordered a few different things and everything was amazing. The tuna tacos were so good, everything was really, but the unagi nigiri I had ordered was phenomenal. It was pretty busy so the service was a little slow but still, the waiters and servers were very nice. Chef Spencer came and introduced himself which made the experience just that much better. Can't wait to come back.

A must for any Calistoga visit. Food was exemplary, modern Japanese with a California twist. The ribs were perfect, the ramen with house made noodles also very tasty, and the sushi was fresh and interesting. Accompanied by a simple but well thought out wine list in a subtly casual atmosphere, and an open kitchen that allowed interaction with the chefs. This was our second visit and was equally as impressive the first. Can't wait to go again!

Everything was so good. The staff was friendly and attentive. We had two rolls: the California roll and the Ivy Rose roll. The lemon on the Ivy Rose made this roll stand out. We also got the black garlic ramen which absolutely exceeded expectations. The broth had so much depth of flavor and the noodles are made in house. We finished with the green tea honey ice cream. Not too sweet. Fun with the pop rocks. Bummed we didn't have room for nigiri. The fresh fish looked great. We would absolutely dine at Five Senses again.

We were a group of friends meeting in Napa for a wine event and decided to forgo trying to find a restaurant with great food that could cater to a big group of adults and kids, instead we went for a private dinner at the house we rented for the weekend. We got recommended Spencer, and we sure are happy we took that recommendation! Spencer was a delight to work with from the first steps of crafting a menu, through the evening's service itself, and wrapping it all up the day after the event. We were really impressed by the flavors and textures of the dishes and the amazing wine pairing to go along with them. It was like having a Michelin star dinner in your own home. Such a relaxed experience with a perfect pacing throughout. The attention to details was not only present in the cooking, but in the table setup and service to go along with it as well. If you are looking for someone to cater to your private dining event, I cannot recommend Spencer and his Five Senses business enough!

I celebrated my birthday with the phenomenal chef Spencer and Ben! Thank you for making my birthday, Amazing! The food was top-tier and my dessert with the Matcha green tea, ice cream, and the homemade pop rocks with the honeycomb was everything oh, and I didn't get a picture of the ribs, but they were fire as well ... they just didn't make it to the picture

Me and my family went to five senses the second night they were open and we will be back! The rolls were amazing and the fish was smooth and delicious. Our waiter was beyond helpful and the atmosphere was amazing! Our favorite was the My Wife's roll and the Umami Pork Ribs were unbelievable!

The sushi chef, his sous chefs and the staff lead a splendid night. Each step was curated in its own way with descriptions for anything we ate, origins, and the connection with the chef. Things started outside in a waiting area with an introductory drink and appetizer. Once things were ready to go inside, we were ushered in and had name places for each of our seats for the evening. If you needed to use the restroom there isn't one organic to the space and you had to go back into the main hallway. We were given 16 courses of fish listed on small chalkboards along the back wall, and then dessert to follow. Everything tasted delicious. My partner had gotten the sake tasting to go with it which added nicely with the food. My favorites for it were the tuna tail, miso steamed egg, hamachi, the shrimp, and the baby octopus. The tuna tail was such an interesting presentation, and the flavors were simple and clean. The miso steamed egg was just comfort. The hamachi melted with how it was prepped with each bite which was great. The shrimp was really fresh, and easy to bite through. The baby octopus tasted amazing, simply seared and was so easy to eat. A number of ingredients were flown in fresh, or from Japan as they added to the dish. The wasabi was also fresh but locally sourced from the US. It was amazing to hear all of the small details that went into each piece and the inspiration behind the dishes. Certainly, a beautiful experience and some of the best sushi also in the area.

There was warm bread service with yummy kale butter. The mains: 2 orders of the 'wine forest risotto' = boneless Wagyu short rib with wild mushrooms, parmesan cheese it was sublime, melted in your mouth, very heavy. There also an order of the 'heritage beef and pork Bolognese', another home run! Lastly of course, dessert consisting of their 'hot mess' a chocolate flourless brownie, with marshmallow, pistachio ice cream, salted caramel - screaming goodness. Service was on point. There is no tipping as it is included in the pricing. Ambiance is casual; there is both indoor & outdoor seating. I had told the restaurant it was for a birthday & the staff have a staff photo made into a card where they all wished my friend 'happy birthday' plus a little gift of a wine bottle stopper, so sweet. Definitely coming back.

What a fantastic operation!…read more The Wife and I had taken a weekend trip to Calistoga, and after a morning and afternoon of wine tasting, we returned to the cottage to find out the power was down for the entire town. The outage continued for several hours. That evening, we strolled down Lincoln Avenue downtown noticing every restaurant was closed (including where we had reservations). A lady suggested looking at Lovina further down the road as she saw people dining. Lovina was open, and it turns out they invested 30K into a generator and it was serving them well--the restaurant was bustling. We approached the host stand and asked if there was a chance to get seated without reservations, and the host pointed at the bar and said "That's all I have." and we took it. The first thing you notice on the menu is that tipping is not expected. They state clearly 30% of the revenue goes to staff and they have 401K, paid vacation, and half of the medical covered for full and part time staff, and the food is priced to reflect those costs. The thing is, the costs were well within the costs you see for other restaurants in the area that expect tips. Add to that, the staff is overwhelmingly competent and seem to be happy. We watched them feed well over 100 customers, meet every reservation, and yet kept our drinks refreshed. The food was delicious, we both had the beef and pork bolognese, and their mocktails were tasty. Often times, the true value of a business is revealed at their worst times, and this team really put on a show. Highest recommendation, sixth star if there were one.

And my taste are different differently different than others. There was something off about the kimchi... It just didn't taste like what I'm used to, but I mean that could be a restaurant thing. I was also thrown off by the macaroni salad. It also had no flavor. I really enjoyed the bean sprouts and wanted to get another serving but was told it was a sample serving and that they don't do more than that. I could pay two dollars m Overall, I think my biggest issue was that a lot of the food was much sweeter than I expected. I was especially surprised by the grilled shrimp because I never imagined it would taste that sweet. I'm not going to lie, I still ate everything because I paid for it and didn't want to waste the food. The highlight of the meal was the Love Boat sushi roll that they light on fire. Visually, it was really impressive and made for a fun presentation. Taste wise, though, it was just an average sushi roll. I couldn't tell that the fire added anything to the flavor. I didn't notice any smokiness or anything that elevated the dish, and I honestly think it would have tasted the same without the fire. For what I paid, I don't think the meal was worth it, so I probably wouldn't come back just for myself. That said, I can see why other people might enjoy it. I did really like the jalapeño on the sushi roll because it added a nice kick, so I would order that again. This is also one of the few times I've had Thai iced tea that was simply too sweet for my taste.
